  • No Jupiter can bring back Boko Haram, they’ve been completely wiped out – Nigerian Army

…says efforts still in top gear to rescue remaining Chibok girls in Sambisa forest

The Defence Headquarters has claimed that Boko Haram has been completely wiped out from the Sambisa Forest.

This was stated by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Rabe Abubakar, during a chat with newsmen at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Abubakar also said those carrying suicide bombings in parts of the North-East were the remnants of the insurgent group.

What we are seeing now as Boko Haram in Nigeria are just remnants that carry out these attacks. Most of the children that we caught were children who don’t even know what they were doing.

They were being drugged and have the explosive devices trapped on them. Most of them were drugged and they were ambitious so that those who sent them will meet their target,” he said.

Even in most developed nations, you can hardly completely wipe out insurgents. There is always on scenario or the other, just to pretend as if they are alive. But Boko Haram and all its apparatus have been completely destroyed.

Boko Haram members are in disarray and that was why we issued a statement last week that due to the ongoing crackdown on Boko Haram, some escapees may tried to integrate into the communities.

As we announced this, we were equally working with other security agencies, who we have always collaborated with, to ensure that those fleeing Boko Haram members are apprehended. That helped us in Abuja and other places were we apprehended fleeing Boko Haram members.

Boko Haram is gone in Nigeria and it has gone for good. There is no Jupiter that can bring Boko Haram; what we are doing is to only sensitise citizens on the need to alert us on fleeing Boko Haram members. On the Chibok girls, our Operation Rescue Finale is still ongoing to rescue the girls”, he added.

  • Boko Haram link: “My vice not in your custody” says Kaga LG chair as army admits error

The Chairman of Kaga Local Government in Borno State, Alhaji Lawal Wasaram, yesterday, denied the claim by the Nigerian Army that it had arrested the Vice Chairman of the council, Malam Mustapha Bukar, for alleged link with the Boko Haram sect.

Wasaram, who made the denial in a statement in Maiduguri yesterday, said the allegation was not only untrue but a total misinterpretation of facts.

According to him, “the attention of my council has been drawn to an allegation made by the Theatre Commander, Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, during a live briefing on Operation Rescue Final, Wednesday.

“The military claimed that they had arrested my Vice Chairman, Malam Mustapha Bukar, and that he is in their custody for connection with Boko Haram. “I, therefore, stress that the report was untrue and total misinterpretation of facts.

Neither my Vice Chairman nor councillors are being investigated or detained over any criminal offence.

“We, therefore, advise that the military issue a statement to disclaim and exonerate him from this serious allegation before it becomes a potential threat to his life and integrity.

“We also regret that this allegation was already aired live on NTA, Channels and many online media.” Reacting, Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, told newsmen that the claim was a mistake.

He said: “We have sorted this out since yesterday. The Vice Chairman of Bama Local Government Area is the one in our custody and currently being investigated.”

  • Shekau not killed, Army presented fake Boko Haram flag to Buhari – PDP Youths

The youth wing of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Youth Frontier, has alleged that the Nigerian Army presented a “fake Boko Haram flag” to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that the Army recently presented a flag and Quran belonging to Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram sect to President Buhari at the Presidential villa in Abuja signaling the capture of the forest and death of the dreaded leader of the terrorist group.

The flag alongside a Qur’an belonging to Shekau was recovered by the Army during the capture of “Camp Zero,” a major stronghold of Boko Haram commanders, located in Sambisa Forest.

However, the PDP youth, in a statement on its twitter handle, @PDPNYF said the presentation of the insurgent flag to Buhari was a disgrace to the “sovereignty” of Nigeria.

The tweet reads: “By presenting a FAKE Boko Haram flag as a sign of victory against the Sect. This is so unfortunate and a disgrace to our sovereignty.”

The group noted that the “Flag and Quoran are not Shekau head. Could Obama bring back Osama Bin Ladin’s Qoran and Flag without killing him?”

Boko Haram: We are not aware of any attack — Police

The Niger Police Command is not aware of any attack by members of Boko Haram in any part of the state.

It was said in a statement on Monday signed by the Deputy Superintendent (DSP), Bala Elkalla.

“The attention of Niger State Police Command has been drawn to online reports especially from Thisday Newspaper and Leadership Sunday of 1/1/2017 on alleged invasion of some villages in Rafi LGA, of Niger by fleeing Boko Haram from the recaptured Sambisa forest.

“The report is not only false but malicious and calculated at causing fear and panic among the peace loving people of Niger State.

“The report is clearly a fiction emanating from the writers imagination.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Niger State is among the few states in the country that has conquered cattle rustling, kidnapping and armed banditry.

“It is on record that within the past few months, the command, in its aggressive operations arrested over 40 armed bandits and recovered over 1,000 cattle and various types of assorted weapons.

“In Rafi LGA alone, being a boundary community with Kaduna state, Zamfara and Kebbi states, the command has over 500 mobile policemen and special anti-robbery squads patrolling the villages.

“Members of the public are enjoined to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses.

“The command has put in place sensitive security measures to guarantee adequate protection of lives and properties of the people.’’

The statement urged political office holders to refrain from statements capable of truncating the long enjoyed peace in Niger State.

It advised journalists to verify their reports in order to adequately inform the public.

  • Atiku hails military, Buhari over defeat of Boko Haram

Atiku hails military, Buhari over defeat of Boko Haram

Former Vice President and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar congratulates the officers and men of the Nigeria Army on the spectacular feat of the invasion and sacking of Camp Zero, the last Boko Haram stronghold in Sambisa Forest.

Describing the success of the soldiers as “a military feat worth celebrating”, the former Vice President says the Army has made good on its promise to finally defeat the terrorists and bring peace to the Northeast region of our country. He adds that by accomplishing this feat, the Army has shown that it has truly regained form and its famed fighting ability for which the Nigeria Army is known.

The Turakin Adamawa says further that this spectacular victory is the result of committed and focused leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, the military Commanders at the battlefront, the intelligence agencies and the unity of purpose exhibited by the nation’s military chiefs to rid the country of the Boko Haram menace.

Atiku Abubakar also commends Nigerians who at every point in the anti-terror war has always stood by and supported the military with prayers and good wishes. He also thanks the international community and close partners of Nigeria in the anti-terror war saying that the final routing at Sambisa Forest hopefully should herald the end of terrorism in the country.

The Turakin Adamawa states that the victory presents the people and government of Nigeria as well as the country’s international partners with the challenge of consolidating the peace by joining hands for the rehabilitation, reconstruction and re-development of the entire Northeast region which was heavily devastated by the activities of the Boko Haram while the anti-terror war lasted.

Arguing that final peace and reconstruction cannot take place without the return and resettlement of the displaced persons in IDP camps in the region, the former Vice President calls on the government and all stakeholders including international partners and donor agencies to seize the momentum of the final routing of the Boko Haram, to intensify the process of reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Atiku Abubakar describes the new situation in the region as the best Christmas and New Year gift to a nation that has been under tremendous stress on account of the deadly activities of these insurgents adding that the Northeast region can now rejoin the nation’s development process which it has been denied by the over seven-year insurgency.

  • Meet American billionaire, Smith, sponsoring Chibok Schoolgirls

An African American billionaire, Robert Smith is sponsoring the education of 24 Chibok schoolgirls in American University, Yola in Adamawa State.

The identity of the good Samaritan was revealed today by Malam Garba Shehu, senior special assistant on the media to President Muhammadu Buhari at an interaction with media men in Abuja.

The billionaire, Shehu also revealed is offering to take responsibility for the 21 girls freed in october and all the others who will hopefully be eventually set free.

    Who is Robert Smith?

He is a 54 year-old businessman, who attended good American colleges such as Cornell and Columbia universities. At Cornell, he picked a bachelor of science in chemical engineering and an MBA at Columbia. He lives in Austin, Texas.

According to a short bio written on him by Forbes, he was the son of Ph.D holders and was bussed across town to his school in the early days of desegregation.

“He later convinced Bell Labs when he was in high school to give him an internship typically only available to college upperclassman by calling them weekly for five months.

“Smith quit Goldman Sachs to open his own private equity shop, Vista Equity Partners, in 2000.

The company is worth over $26 billion, according to wikipedia.

“Neuberger Berman bought a stake in the $16.9 billion (assets) Austin, Texas firm, best known for fixing up enterprise software outfits, in July 2015,” Forbes reported.

“That same month, Smith married 2010 Playboy Playmate of the Year Hope Dworaczyk in Italy

Forbes listed him as the 274th richest man in the United States as at 27 December, with a net worth of $2.5 billion. He is ranked 688th in the world. Some other reports put his net worth at $3billion.

He is a self-made man, who made his money in private equity investments.

And before then, he struggled early to get what he wanted.

According to his story, as a junior at Denver’s East High School in the 1970s, he showed a fascination for the geekiest subject there: Computer science.

“The transistor held particular wonder for him. This small device, a crucial valve controlling the flow of electrons within a computer, had been invented at Bell Labs. Bell had a nearby office. Maybe he should work at Bell, too.

“After securing the number, Smith phoned and inquired about a summer internship. Yes, Bell did have one, he learned, but only college upperclassmen could apply. Smith had straight A’s in math and computer science.

Would that count? No, Bell said, it would not. Undaunted by this initial rejection, Smith called back every day for two weeks—HR stopped answering after Day 2—and then cut back on how often he called …to every Monday for five months. Eventually, he was rewarded for his doggedness. After an MIT student didn’t show up in June, Bell called Smith. Could he come in for an interview?

“I ran my own race. I knew what I wanted, and my persistence paid off, and I came in and interviewed. They liked me, and I got the internship,” Smith said in a commencement address at American University in 2015.

“In fact, I worked there for the next four years during summer and winter breaks.”

After leaving Cornell, he worked at Kraft General Foods, where he earned two United States and two European patents.

He then attended Columbia Business School, where he graduated with honours. From 1994-2000, he joined Goldman Sachs in tech investment banking, first in New York and then in Silicon Valley.

“As Co-Head of Enterprise Systems and Storage, he executed and advised on over $50B in merger and acquisition activity with companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, eBay and Yahoo. He was the first person at Goldman Sachs to focus solely on Tech M&A and foreign countries.

In 2000, he set up his own company, Vista Equity Partners.

According to a Wikipedia post, Vista has exclusively focused on the enterprise software, data and technology enabled solutions sectors. Among Vista’s portfolio companies are Misys, TIBCO, Solera, Active Network, Bullhorn, Omnitracs, and Newscyle.

In January 2015, based on its performance over the last 10 years, Vista Equity Partners was named the world’s Number One performing private equity firm, according to the HEC-Dow Jones annual ranking conducted by Professor Oliver Gottschalg.

Preqin, a consulting firm that tracks the industry, reported that Vista’s third fund returned $2.46 for every dollar invested, better than every other big fund raised between 2006 and 2010, the boom years for private equity.

In October 2014, Vista closed its Fund V at $5.8 billion, its largest fund to date.

As a successful African-American, Smith has been generous hearted.

In January this year, he announced a $50 million gift to his alma mater Cornell University, which renamed its school of chemical and bio-engineering after him. In June he was named chairman of Carnegie Hall.

In September, he donated $20million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. His private gift, as reported by Washington Post was the second largest behind Opral Winfrey, the richest African-American, who gave $21 million.

Smith has received the Reginald F. Lewis Achievement Award, the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Robert Toigo Foundation, and the Ripple of Hope Award from Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights.

Smith was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of International Affairs from American University’s School of International Service. He founded Project Realize– termed “Free Market Philanthropy”– in order to combine the best elements of the American free enterprise system with the core American ideals of giving back and lifting others up.

No wonder, he is willing to lift the Chibok schoolgirls out of their predicament and give them a dream education.

  • Army confirm arrest of fleeing Boko Haram member in Lagos

    …Urges Nigerians to be vigilante

Following the present onslaught against members of the Boko Haram sect by the military in the Sambisa forest, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said a suspected fleeing Boko Haram member was arrested last Thursday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State by soldiers.

The army chief said this on Monday during his visit to the troops of 145 Battalion in Damasak, Borno State, to mark the reopening of the Maiduguri-Gubio-Damasak Road.

Buratai had on Sunday joined the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, to reopen the Maiduguri-Monguno-Baga and Maiduguri-Gubio-Damasak roads which had been closed since 2013 due to Boko Haram activities.

Buratai stressed that the troops would not rest on their oars until other fleeing terrorists from the North-East geopolitical zone were apprehended.

Addressing the troops, Buratai said: “I urge you not to relent until all the terrorists, who had fought Nigeria since 2009, are arrested. We must maintain the momentum of the operation. We must pursue the terrorists wherever they are. We must never allow them to regroup.

For instance, a Boko Haram member was arrested in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Thursday. Despite the takeover of the terrorists’ Camp Zero in the Sambisa Forest, we have no time to waste. The seven-year fight against the Boko Haram terrorists was quite sober, and a number of officers lost their lives in the war. I pray for the repose of their souls. We vow to fight the remnants’ of the terrorists.”

To further boost the morale of the troops, President Muhammadu Buhari sent in congratulatory messages assuring the troops of the Federal Government’s support.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammed, appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the troops as they clear the remnants of the fleeing terrorists.

The minister also called for increased vigilance among Nigerians, noting that the Boko Haram escapees were seeking to integrate themselves into the society.

We urge Nigerians to keep our gallant and victorious troops in their prayers, and to also imbibe the mantra of ‘if you see something, say something’ as a way of ensuring that no escaped terrorist is able to wreak havoc in their communities. It is also important to know that now that they have been dispossessed of their fortress, the Boko Haram escapees will intensify their cowardly attacks on vulnerable targets if only to maintain an illusion of terror. But there should be no panic because the worst is over,’’ Mohammed said.
