Uber, Bolt drivers protest in Abuja

Dozens of Uber and Bolt drivers are protesting in the nation’s capital Abuja against their service providers.

The protesting drivers are calling for a review in charges for services, commissions, and proper profiling of users.

The drivers insist that charges for services in Abuja remain the lowest when compared with other cities in the country.

According to them, the current customer profiling method by Uber and Bolt puts their members in harm’s way.

The drivers are however giving the operators of Uber and Bolts a seven-day ultimatum to address their demands or risk service withdrawal in the nation’s capital.

  • Choked roads: Uber targets Lagos with boat service

Uber has said it is in talks with Lagos state regulators about providing a transport system on the city’s waterways as a way of bypassing its choked roads.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Uber’s Chief Business Officer, Brooks Entwistle made this known on Thursday during an interview.

“We are looking at the waterways here, which are very interesting to us as it relates to a potential service.

“We did launch Uber Boat in Mumbai and we have watched the product develop. It’s in its early stages and we think there is high relevance here,” Entwistle said.

Uber began operations in Nigeria in July 2014, beginning with the commercial capital Lagos, a megacity of around 20 million inhabitants built on a lagoon, that is beset by heavy traffic congestion.

The Uber executive, who described Lagos as “one of the great growth opportunity cities in the world”, said the company has held discussions with regulators in the city, and also with a bus firm, adding that discussions were at an early stage.

He said the talks were in line with a global push by the company to develop products that can work alongside public transit systems.

Entwistle said the combination of population growth and congestion made Lagos attractive.

The United Nations predicts that Nigeria’s population will more than double to 400 million by 2050, which would make it the third most populous country in the world after China and India.

Uber faces stiff competition in Nigeria from Estonian ride-hailing firm Bolt, which until early 2019 was called Taxify.

Bolt has grabbed business largely by taking a smaller cut from drivers using its app.

A number of motorcycle ride-hailing firms, including Gokada, have also targeted Lagos state in the last few months.

Its official! Taxify changes name to Bolt

A foremost commercial ride-hailing service company, Taxify has rebranded its name to become Bolt.

The Estonian company announced the change of name on Thursday in a statement by its CEO, Markus Villig, and has since the announcement updated its apps and various listings in app stores to its new name ‘Bolt’, accordingly.

“Since our launch five years ago, Taxify has grown to be more than a taxi app. Now millions of people over the world are using us to move around.

”Be it in a car, on a motor or riding an electric scooter. It’s time for our name to reflect our mission of building the best way to move in cities.

“We are changing our name and logo, but the app with great prices and fast arrival times will stay just as good as ever,” Villig said.

He explained that the new brand would be gradually rolled out across global markets over the following weeks and users would not need to take any action because the app would update automatically.

The company which started operations in Lagos in Nov. 2016, was founded in Tallinn, Estonia in 2013 by Villig and has since its inception spread its operation through 30 countries and 50 cities in Europe, Africa, West Asia, North America and Australia.

‘I have done everything I wanted to do in sports’, Bolt confirms retirement

The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, has confirmed that he will retire from athletics in August this year.

Bolt says he has achieved everything he dreamt of and has no reason to continue running.

The Jamaican sprinter was speaking on the red carpet at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.

“I’ve just done everything I wanted to do in the sport,” Bolt told Reuters.

“I asked (former U.S. sprinter) Michael Johnson the same question, ‘why did you retire when you were on top?’. He said the same — he had done everything he had wanted to do in athletics so there was no reason to stay in the sport. Now I understand what he means.

“I just wanted to run and to be part of it. I had to take it easy because I wasn’t at the level I would usually be. It was the first time I had competed at this time of the year.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Bolt was recently stripped of his 2008 Olympics relay gold after a trace of banned substance was found in team mate Nesta Carter’s re-tested sample, damaging his ‘treble treble’ record.
