Police recover nine unexploded bombs in Kano after explosion killed five at steel site

Nine unexploded bombs have been recovered by police operatives from the scene of Saturday’s deadly explosion at Yongxing Steel Company in the Mariri area of Kano State, along the Ring Road.

The explosion, which left five people dead and several others injured, has been traced to military-grade ordnance mistakenly brought into the steel facility along with scrap metal.

In a statement by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Hussaini Abdullahi, the police said two more unexploded ordnances were recovered after an earlier discovery of seven.

In addition to the earlier recovered seven UXOs, 2 UXOs were later recovered from the scene, bringing it to a total of nine,” he said.

He explained that the police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) division carried out a post-blast investigation and confirmed the explosion was caused by an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), not an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as initially suspected.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, confirmed the tragic loss of lives and revealed that a trailer transporting what is believed to be a military ordnance may have been involved.

“I received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion, possibly a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died,” he said.

He explained that the injured victims were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Kano in panic mode as military bomb explodes killing five, injures 15

There is confusion in Kano community on Saturday morning following a deadly explosion believed to have been caused by a military-grade mortar bomb. At least five people have been confirmed dead, while 15 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The blast, which occurred in the early hours, triggered immediate response from security agencies and emergency medical teams. The scene was cordoned off as ambulances evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who visited the scene shortly after the incident, said preliminary findings point to a suspected military ordnance that may have been improperly handled or transported.

“I received a distress call and upon arrival, discovered it was a suspected explosion—possibly from a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured and, tragically, five lives were lost,” Bakori confirmed.

According to the police, the explosive device may have been in transit aboard a trailer allegedly originating from Yobe State. It is unclear whether the vehicle was operated by military personnel, civilian contractors, or private individuals.

“The situation remains under active investigation. We’re yet to determine the exact source and ownership of the explosive material,” the Commissioner stated, urging residents to stay calm and await verified updates.

This latest incident has sparked fresh concerns over the movement and storage of military-grade weapons within civilian areas, raising questions about safety protocols and regulatory oversight.

As investigations continue, security agencies have tightened surveillance across key routes into the state, while bomb disposal units have been deployed to inspect the area for any secondary threats.

Shock as residents discover huge bomb in Enugu community

A live explosive discovered at a farmland in Ochima community in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State have sent chills amongst residents prompting protest after a live explosive was discovered in their farmland, the second such incident in two years.

TheNewsGuru reports that the protesters, carrying placards with inscriptions like “Nigerian Army should leave Ochima community alone” and “Government should come and rescue Ochima community from Nigerian Army”, blamed their ordeal on ongoing military shooting exercises by the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division, Enugu.

The discovery of a live bomb in their farmland, according to the protesters, intensified fear among residents, who allege that the military’s shooting range is too close to their community. They expressed concerns over years of trauma, property damage, injuries, and even death resulting from stray bullets and explosives.

The President General of the Ochima Town Union, Gerald Okwesili Ubaka, while addressing the media, stated that the community could no longer conduct its daily activities in peace.

“The reason why we are protesting is that we are in danger.

“The community cannot live comfortably again because every time bullets from the Nigerian Army, 82 Division, Enugu shooting range fall in our land. We cannot farm or fetch water from our streams,” he told journalists.

Ubaka recounted the tragic death of a female resident, Gloria, in February 2022, who was hit by a stray bullet during military exercises.

He explained that the recently discovered bomb was reported to the Police Divisional Headquarters at Ogbede, which promptly contacted the Police Anti-Bomb Squad in Enugu.

“They came and helped us neutralise the explosive,” he said, noting that the detonation took place on May 10, 2025.

“Last year we discovered a bomb and this year again we discovered another bomb. In our land, all the people and visitors are in danger and we are dying.”

The Senior Special Adviser on Works in the local government, Engr. Onyebuchi Otoboeze, confirmed the community’s ordeal and applauded the council chairman for acting swiftly during the recent incident.

Also speaking, the Station Catechist of Holy Child Catholic Church, Ochima, Lawrence Igwe, urged the government to intervene and prevent further disaster.

“We are begging the government to take this matter seriously before more lives are lost,” Igwe pleaded.

Military police and intelligence officers, acting on suspicion, intercepted the individual before he could enter the military facility in the Federal Capital Territory.

As of press time, the Nigerian military had not released an official statement regarding the incident.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed the explosion, which occurred near the Mararaba–Nyanya bypass.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh said the explosion was reported at approximately 2:50 p.m. on May 26, 2025.

  • Fubara in shock over police silence after attempted bomb detonation

Fubara in shock over police silence after attempted bomb detonation

Rivers State Governor, has expressed surprise at the prolonged silence of the Nigerian Police Force over the attempted detonation of explosive device beside the Presidential Hotel.

Fubara disclosed this after swearing in Mr Emmanuel Frank-Fubara as the new Commissioner for Finance at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Fubara noted that the explosive device was detonated by some protesters demanding for elongation of tenure of former chairmen of local government councils in Rivers.

The governor maintained that if such was done by supporters linked to him, terrorism charges would have been slammed on them swiftly without delay.

Fubara insisted that Rivers state with the current political crisis had one enemy who vehemently opposed the current administration, with others making frenetic efforts to sink the state.

Fubara recalled several prayers upheld by his predecessors, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, that Rivers state was dedicated to God, and those who fought it would continue to experience inexplicable trouble and defeat.

Fubara said, “I am wondering after how many weeks now, the Nigerian Police is still not able to come out and make a statement about the attempt by the man that tried to detonate a dynamite in front of Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt.

“I am still wondering why it has not happened, but maybe, if it was any other thing that has to do with us, they would have charged the person for terrorism.

“But, you see, this God that I serve, we are serving genuinely. This God that Rivers State has been dedicated to by our predecessors, because when they make statements, they say: Rivers State belongs to God; and that is the God that is saving and lifting us,” Fubara stated.

The governor pointed out that his administration was satisfied with the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, saying that they were duly recognised by law to carry on with its legislative duties.

Fubara charged the newly sworn-in Commissioner not to disappoint the confidence reposed in him.

He also urged him to use the opportunity to touch lives, while making the state proud with the quality of service he would render.

According to him, it doesn’t matter how long or short I have known him. But within the short period of knowing him, he has proven himself to be a gentleman.

Fubara promised that his administration would continue to offer services and deliver quality development projects that would truly advance the state on a progressive pedestal that will also translate to quality living for the people.

“By the special grace of God, when we leave, there should be genuine positive things that people will see and say, yes, this government meant well for the good people of Rivers,” he added.

  • Death toll hits 11 in Kano mosque bomb attack

Death toll hits 11 in Kano mosque bomb attack

The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the death of eight of the 24 victims of the Gezawa Mosque attack, with 17 others still receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

However, the police had arrested the suspect, Shafiu Abubakar, 38, who confessed that his actions were in revenge over a disputed inheritance, claiming he had been cheated.

However, a resident of the village Rabiu Gadan, confirmed to Leadership that 11 people had so far died due to the injuries they suffered and that the funeral of eight of them had already been conducted while the corpses of the remaining three were being prepared for burial today (Thursday).

Gadan said the attack was not Abubakar’s first violent outburst as he had previously assaulted two of his older brothers and then surrendered himself to the police claiming he had killed them.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the number of deaths late Wednesday, said seven more victims died while receiving treatment at the facility.

According to him, 17 other victims were still receiving treatment at the hospital.

“The victims died as a result of the injuries they sustained in the unfortunate incident,” Haruna said.

It was gathered that Abubakar sprayed the mosque area with petroleum before locking the door, and setting the mosque ablaze.

The principal suspect is currently in police custody assisting them in the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is Shafi’u Abubakar, aged 38, who said his action was purely in hostility, following a prolonged family disagreement over sharing of inheritance of which those that he alleged to have cheated on him were in the mosque at that moment and he did that for his voice to be heard,” the police spokesman said.

Sadik Kamal said when the flames engulfed the mosque, he desperately attempted to escape but found the exit doors securely locked.

“It was the latecomers who struggled to open the locked doors to make good the escape of those trapped to safety,” Kamal said.

Just in: Bomb rocks DR Congo airport as rebels clash with govt forces

A bomb struck the airport in the restive eastern DR Congo city of Goma early Saturday as fighting flared between rebels and government forces.

Clashes have intensified in recent days around the strategic town of Sake, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Goma, between the M23 rebel group – which Kinshasa says is backed by neighbouring Rwanda – and Congolese government forces.

“Yes, it’s true, Goma airport was hit by a bomb last night,” a source in the governorate of North Kivu province said, asking not to be named.

A security source spoke of “two bombs” at the facility in Goma, the North Kivu capital and home to one million people, adding that they “caused no damage”.

Two experts are on site to check where the bombs were fired from,” the source said.

An AFP correspondent and Goma residents reported hearing two loud explosions.

The UN Security Council voiced concern this week at “escalating violence” in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, condemning an offensive launched by the mostly-Tutsi M23 rebels near Goma.

The DRC, the UN and Western countries say Rwanda is supporting the rebels in a bid to control vast mineral resources, an allegation Kigali denies.

The rebels have conquered vast swathes of North Kivu in the last two years.

The latest fight has pushed tens of thousands of civilians to flee towards Goma, which stands between Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border and is practically cut off from the country’s interior.

According to a confidential UN document seen by AFP earlier this week, the Rwandan army is using sophisticated weapons such as surface-to-air missiles to support M23.

A “suspected Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM)” was fired at a UN observation drone last Wednesday without hitting it, the report said.

UN forces have been in DRC for nearly 25 years, but stand accused of failing to protect civilians from armed groups.

The UN Security Council voted in December to accede to Kinshasa’s demand for a pullout despite the volatile situation.

With multiple diplomatic efforts failing to quell the violence in the Congo, African leaders meeting for a summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa discussed the DRC situation on the sidelines late Friday and were due to convene again on Saturday.

SAD! Bombs k!ll 103 during slain general’s memorial in Iran

No fewer than 103 people were killed in Iran Wednesday as two bombs in quick succession struck a crowd commemorating slain general Qasem Soleimani on the anniversary of his killing, state media reported.

The blasts, which state television called a “terrorist attack”, came with tensions running high in the Middle East a day after Hamas number two Saleh al-Aruri – an Iran ally – was killed in a drone attack on a Beirut southern suburb which Lebanese officials blamed on Israel.

The blasts stuck near the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani’s southern hometown where he is buried, as supporters gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of his killing in a US drone strike just outside Baghdad airport.

Kerman’s deputy governor, Rahman Jalali, said the explosions were a “terrorist attack”.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

“The number of people killed rose to 103 following the death of people injured during the terrorist explosions,” said official IRNA news agency, which earlier reported 73 deaths.

Another 141 people were wounded in the bombings, IRNA said, adding that some were in “critical condition”.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency, quoting informed sources, said “two bags carrying bombs went off” at the site.
