Ex-Delta Commissioner, Magnus Onyibe releases book on how to cope with death, grief

Three years after losing his precious daughter, Kikaose Ebiye-Onyibe, former Delta State Commissioner for Information, Magnus Onyibe has released a book that dwells on the subject of dealing with grief arising from the loss of a child.

In the poignant, heart-breaking, yet hopeful and life-affirming memoir titled: ‘‘Beyond Loss and Grief: The Passage of Kikaose Ebiye-Onyibe, A Survivor’s Guide to Handling the Loss of a Child’’, Magnus Onyibe sought to leverage his family’s journey through grief, pain, acceptance, and the eventual celebration of a life to offer valuable counsel to families that have lost a child or those that will go through the experience in the future on how to deal with such a heart-rending loss.

The book opens with Onyibe introducing the reader to a trip he, his wife and their youngest child made to the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where Kikaose was a second year law student, to retrieve her belonging after she passed away in a hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Chapter 2 titled: ‘‘Eclipse’’ takes the reader back to the circumstances that led up to Kikaose’s death. Reading through this chapter, one is tempted to scream ‘‘how could all these have been allowed to happen?’’ as Onyibe recounts the litany of professional misconduct and negligence that ultimately led to the demise of his precious daughter at the tender age of 18 years.

While the book dwells mostly on his daughter and the life she lived, Onyibe sought to honour the lives of 20 other young people including children of public office holders, businessmen, celebrities and other citizens who were taken from their families in the prime of their youth

According to Onyibe, the pains from the untimely death of a child do not go away. A parent lives with it until they depart this world for the great beyond. However, he believes that a parent owe it to themselves and their departed child to grieve graciously.

He explains that ‘‘there is good grief and bad grief. Good grief entails accepting our loss and the emptiness we feel as a consequence but looking to go beyond that point to a place of healing and growth’’.

‘‘Grief, if well-handled can lead to healthy growth after a loss. We can achieve this by contextualizing our loss using the optics of the possibility that the tragedy could have been worse. If we lost a child, it could have been two. If we lost two children, it could have been three or four. No one prays for such a grievious tragedy as the loss of a child but when it happens, we must find a way to deal with it and continue to live and be productive.

‘‘But grief can be bad as well. This happens when we allow grief to fester by harbouring negative thoughts such as: ‘‘the world hates me’’ or ‘‘my enemies are trying to get me’’. Like a bad sore, when grief festers, it could lead to complications that might compromise our health’’.

Onyibe also suggested that besides contextualizing the loss, families could grieve graciously and heal faster using the apparatus of family bonding. ‘‘Family bonding after the loss of a loved one can be therapeutic. It is critical because it allows grieving family members to reconnect emotionally with one another and serve as one another’s support to better cope with the loss. Ideally, this should take place in a location outside the usual home setting’’

In the later part of the book, Onyibe points out some common mistakes that parents sending their children abroad – particularly to the UK – should avoid. The content of this section of the book are intended to serve as an advocacy for the protection of the precious lives of our young people who leave Nigeria to study in foreign lands, away from the watchful eyes of their parents. It is aimed at enlightening both the young people concerned and their parents on how to avoid suffering the type of tragedy which Onyibe and his family have been coping with over the last three years.

…titled Abba Kyari: Portrait of a Loyalist, the good, the bad and ugly sides of public service in Nigeria

Barely two months after the death of President Muhammadu Buhari’s former Chief of Staff (CoS), Abba Kyari, a book on him has emerged in the Nigerian books shelf.

In a press release, the publishers, Inspire Media Services itemised the highlights of the book hinging it on the good, the bad and ugly sides of a public servant.

  • Agbese, Public affairs commentator set to launch book on Buhari

-Gets over 1million pre-order 2 weeks before launch

Chief Executive Officer of TheNigerian, a news portal-a news portal that focuses on developmental issues within Nigeria with grip on trending global issues- Mr. Philip Agbese, is set to launch a book on President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Book, Integrity Vs Power Play: Understanding the Buhari Phenomenon is a literary document that introduces fresh perspectives into the gamut of issues surrounding the Buhari persona and goes beneath the veneer of public discourse to connect major and minor events in the life of the Nigerian President with how Nigeria is being transformed for the better since the advent of the current administration.

The author of the soon to be launched book on President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Philip Agbese has received an order for over1 million copies of the book, more than two weeks to the date for the official launch.

Written in lucid prose, the author makes no pretence about his adroitness with the subject matter as he walked through the maze of several issues right from the early days of the Nigerian President to now and explains with ease what had stood as labyrinthine contours and conjectures with lucidity and clarity.

The currency of the book against the background of its historical depth stands as one of its major selling points as it marries the past and the present in a manner that no work on the president has done that both researchers and those content with trendy news would find common ground.

The inspiration for the book as explained by the author on its blurb, “is the resounding victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections” and the “hope that the reader would understand why President Buhari has remained an exceptional leader in the military and political firmament of Nigeria.”

The book is edited by Professor Bitrus Gwamna, a professor of political science-based in the US while the forward is written by George Kieh, a political researcher and one-time presidential candidate in Liberia.

It will be unveiled at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on the 30th December 2019.

Agbese has been actively involved in helping to shape global narratives about the image and perception of Nigeria through his medium, TheNigerian and through media interventions as a public affairs commentator. Agbese attended University of Ilorin and Middlesex

University London where he bagged a first degree in law and recently concluded his masters in human rights laws.

His latest effort is bound to mark him as a major force in the circle of writers who desire positive changes for their countries.

  • Shettima to Jonathan: Your ‘elementary book of tales’ lacks courage, credibility

…Accuses former president of deliberately omitting facts about Chibok girls’ abduction

Governor Kashim Shettima on Wednesday attacked former President Goodluck Jonathan of not presenting the facts regarding the Chibok girls’ abduction as it happened.

The governor insisted that President Jonathan’s new book, My Transition Hours did not contain his probe panel’s report.

Recall that the former president launched the book on Tuesday in commemoration of his 61st birthday.

In clever attempt to sweep under the carpet, incontrovertible facts surrounding the April 14, 2014 Chibok abduction, former President Goodluck Jonathan has deliberately omitted in chapter four of his new book, an investigative report submitted to him in June 2014, by the presidential facts-finding committee he constituted in May, 2014, which was mandated to gather evidence-based facts and circumstances on the abduction,” Shettima has said.

The former president had indicated that the schoolgirls’ abduction was a product of conspiracy by the then opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), in connivance with Borno State government. He also accused the Borno government and then President Barack Obama’s administration in the United States of undermining efforts to rescue the Chibok girls in 2014.

Shettima, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, said Jonathan never believed there was ever an abduction until rescue efforts were late, the “the former President’s elementary book of tales fell short of the courage required of him to publish findings by his own panel in chapter four of his book, he said.

Gusau quoted the governor as saying: “The whole of Tuesday night, I took the pains of reading His Excellency, former President Goodluck Jonathan’s book, My Transition Hours, from the first to the 177th page. I took particular interest in chapter four (the Chibok school girls affair) which has 42 paragraphs written on pages 27 to 36. I was amused that despite admitting in paragraph 15, that he had (in May 2014) constituted a Presidential Fact-Finding Committee under Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Sabo and many others “to investigate” the Chibok abduction, former President Jonathan refused to mention any part or whole of the findings by that panel which had submitted a highly-investigative report to him on Friday, June 20, 2014 after the panel held investigative meetings with the then chiefs of Defence Staff, Army Staff, Air Staff, the DG, DSS and IGP, met all security heads in Borno, visited Chibok, met with parents of abducted schoolgirls, met surviving students, interrogated officials of the school and the supervising Ministry of Education, interrogated officials of WAEC and analyzed all correspondences.

What has become very clear is that the former president decided to sit on facts in his custody while he published, in an elementary standard, a book of fiction designed to pass guilty verdicts on anyone but himself, with respect to the open failures of his administration to rescue our daughters and in tackling the Boko Haram challenges.”

The governor declared that by refusing to publish any part of his own panel’s findings on the Chibok abduction, Jonathan’s book was nothing short of “a presidential tale by midday”.

Shettima recalled that for for the records, “on Tuesday, the 6th of May, 2014, President Jonathan had inaugurated multi-agency/stakeholder fact-finding panel under the chairmanship of Brig.-General Ibrahim Sabo (rtd), a one-time Director of Military Intelligence and also appointed a secretary from the Niger Delta. President Jonathan single handedly selected all members of that committee which included his trustees amongst serving and retired security officers from the Army, DSS and Police; representatives of the UN and ECOWAS, representatives of the Chibok community, local and international civil rights organisations, representatives of the National Council on Women Societies, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, amongst other persons he trusted. For almost two months, the probe panel undertook forensic assessment of all documents on the entire issues, held investigative meetings with parents of the schoolgirls during a visit to Chibok. The panel held separate one-on-one investigative meetings with myself, the then Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chiefs of Air and Naval Staff, met the then Director General of the DSS and the Inspector General of Police, all of whom were appointees of President Jonathan. The panel interrogated officials of Borno Government, including the Comof Education and the school principal. The panel also held investigative meetings with heads of all security agencies in Borno State, including security formations in charge of Chibok. At the end, the panel submitted its report directly to President Jonathan on Friday, the 20th of June, 2014 in Abuja. President Jonathan has refused to make public the findings submitted to him. I was expecting the findings in his book but he has deliberately swept that report under the carpet. However, I remember that on June 24, 2014, the ThisDay Newspaper claimed to have obtained a copy of the panel’s report and published as its lead, that painstaking findings by the Presidential panel had indicted the military under Jonathan’s watch and completely absolved the Borno State Government of any blame regarding the Chibok abduction. The newspaper went further to say that the panel actually commended efforts of the Borno State Government in its commitment to the fight against Boko Haram as testified by heads of security establishments,” the statement from Gusau said.

Shettima also said it was clear to him after reading the former president’s book that he still lives with poor understanding of issues under his presidency. The Governor cited that, for instance, Jonathan’s claim on page 31 that Boko Haram wanted a Muslim President rather than him as Christian was laughable since the insurgents actually began their deadliest attacks in Borno under the regime of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, a Moslem from northern Nigeria.

We know for a fact that as vicious cycle of evil, Boko Haram fighters do not care about the religion of their targeted victims. They attack mosques and churches. They are lunatics who regard anyone who doesn’t share their ideology as an infidel. So, I wonder how the former President didn’t take time to understand the biggest challenge under his presidency,” Shettima said.

The governor advised Jonathan to write another book on account of his presidency which should contain “the facts as have been presented to him, regarding the Chibok abduction rather than the fiction” he made public on Tuesday.

2015 elections: I’ll reveal how Buhari defeated Jonathan in my book – Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Friday said he will reveal true details of how President Muhammadu Buhari defeated former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential elections.

Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos, reportedly played an instrumental role in the merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change and All Nigeria Peoples Party to form the APC that presented President Muhammadu Buhari as candidate.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that President Muhammadu Buhari defeated the then incumbent President (Goodluck Jonathan) in 2015 presidential elections.

Speaking at the launch of “Against the Run of Play”, a book authored by Chairman, ThisDay Editorial Board, Olusegun Adeniyi, Tinubu said he would soon reveal how the APC defeated the Peoples Democratic Party in the last presidential election.

Tinubu, who was represented at the event by his media aide, Mr. Tunde Rahman, also noted that he played a big role in the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Nigeria’s Vice-President.

He said people should not dwell on his loss of the vice-presidential seat but on the achievements of Osinbajo, whom he had nominated for the position.

Rahman said, “Some have said that they will tell their story, Asiwaju is also working on his own book to tell his account of what transpired.

To tell how he was able to mould the APC to the extent that it was able to unseat an incumbent president for the first time in the history of our contemporary politics.

The account of what transpired as told by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the book and as presented in some newspapers is not about him losing the vice-presidency and the eventual vice-president emerging, as the reviewer has put it.

Asiwaju spoke in greater context in that book, and when people are making comments, they should speak with the context in which he spoke. If they are saying that Asiwaju lost the vice-presidency and that a vice-president emerged, where did he emerge from? Who nominated the vice-president?

I’d like to say that even the vice-president has said on some occasions that a certain political leader from the South-West nominated him for the job and we all know who that is.

That nomination has been a very good choice from all the wonderful things the vice-president has been doing.”
