Fresh details emerge on Bobrisky’s failed attempt to cross border

More details have emerged on how popular cross dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, was arrested at Seme Border on Monday.

Witnesses told the NAN that Bobrisky arrived at the departure axis of the border post around 1.30 a.m. on Monday in a black SUV Mercedes Benz.

According to the sources, Bobrisky was first stopped by Port Health officials on duty but the driver didn’t stop until he got to Immigration check-point.

“Idris handed over his passport to the driver for stamping at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) post.

“The immigration surveillance officer, identified as Yusuf, while going through the passport, detected that the person inside the vehicle was Bobrisky.

“He called the most senior officer on duty to the scene, and they secretly invited the Controller of Immigration, Seme Command, Mr Muhammad Adamu.

“The surveillance officer then went back to invite Bobrisky for capturing in order to stamp the passport.

“On getting to the surveillance unit for capturing, he was taken to the controller’s office for questioning,” a source told NAN.

Another source told NAN that Bobrisky’s lawyer later came to Seme to inquire why he was arrested by the personnel of the immigration command.

“Bobrisky stayed inside the controller’s office until 4.00 p.m, when he was taken to Lagos State Command of NIS for further investigation,” the source said.

Recall  that NIS on Monday confirmed  arrest of Bobrisky at the Seme Border.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Kenneth Udo, said Bobrisky was arrested because he “is a person of interest over recent issues of public concern”.

Udo, in a statement issued in Abuja, said: “In keeping with its commitment to securing the borders, NIS intercepted Bobrisky at the Seme Border over an attempt to exit the country.

He said that Bobrisky was undergoing interrogation and would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.

  • FG set to open border for cement importation if…..

FG set to open border for cement importation if…..

Following the hike in prices of cement in the country, the Federal Government has threatened to open the borders to enable cement importation.

FG has promised to carry out this act if cement manufacturers refuse to reduce the price of the commodity in the country.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, who issued the threat on Tuesday, said key input materials for cement production such as limestone, clay, silica sand, and gypsum, sourced within the nation’s borders, should not be dollar-rated.

Dangiwa made his position known in Abuja during an emergency meeting held with cement and building materials manufacturers.

According to him, the price of gas that manufacturers are using as an excuse was not tenable because gas is a raw material found within the country.

He added that the excuse of an increase in mining equipment should not come up because equipment bought by the manufacturers have been used for decades and not purchased every day.

The minister said the border was closed to the importation of cement to help local manufacturers.

However, he noted that if the government decides to open the border for mass importation, prices of cement would crash and local manufacturers would be gravely affected.

The minister, who called on the manufacturers to be more patriotic, said BUA Cement, for instance, has been willing and is still willing as at the last time he spoke with them, to crash the price of their cement, lower than the N7000, N8000 agreed by the manufacturers and he sees no reason why the others should not do same.

“The challenges you speak of, many countries are facing the same challenges and some even worse than that but as patriotic citizens, we have to rally around whenever there is a crisis to change the situation.

“The gas price you spoke of, we know that we produce gas in the country. The only thing you can say is that maybe it is not enough.

“Even if you say about 50 percent of your production cost is spent on gas prices, we still produce gas in Nigeria. It’s just that some of the manufacturers take advantage of the situation. As for the mining equipment that you mentioned, you buy equipment and it takes years and you are still using it,” he said.

Earlier, Group Chief Commercial Officer of Dangote Cement, Rabiu Umar blamed the high cost of gas and mining equipment for the hike in cement price.

He said: “It is safe to say we are all Nigerians and we are all facing the current head weight that is happening. I would like to speak on the popular belief that most of the raw materials to produce cement are available locally.

“While we have limestone and in some cases, we have gypsum and some cases coal, the reality is that it takes a lot of forex-related items to produce cement.”

Customs closes border, says not at war with Niger Republic

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says the closure of Nigeria borders with Niger Republic is not a declaration of war between the two countries as speculated.

Mr Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS acting Comptroller General, made the assertion while addressing Illela border community of Sokoto State on Friday.

Adeniyi, who was at the Illela border to ascertain the level of compliance, clarified that what is happening in Nigeria is also happening in other states of West Africa that shares same border with Niger Republic.

“My mission here is to restate the directives of President Bola Tinubu, been not only the Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“As we are aware one of the Chairman’s responsibility is to promote trade between members of ECOWAS.

“But we all know that trade cannot happen in an environment where there is no peace.

“So the intention of government is to ensure that we leverage perfectly on the nexus between trade and security,” he said.

The acting comptroller general added that the situation happening in Niger Republic is such that trade cannot strive.

“This development initiated the ECOWAS Heads of States decision to seize trade with our neighbours, the Republic of Niger.

“However, there are other measures that are ongoing, the diplomatic front, there are engagement going on with the authority of Niger to ensure the crisis is peacefully resolved,” he added.

Adeniyi further stated that the action is not only restricted to Illela border but all other areas where the Niger Republic is bordering the country.

“So what we are saying is that the closure will be a temporary thing until we have final resolution of the crisis in Niger Republic.

“But certainly we are not at war with Niger Republic and no such declaration has been made,” he said.

On his remarks Alhaji Buhari Tukur, the District Head of Illela, appreciated the customs chief.

Tukur, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, assured that the community would continue to remain law abiding and respect government policies.

2023 polls: Buhari directs NIS to tighten security around borders

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to tighten security around the nation’s borders before and after the general elections.

Interior minister Rauf Aregbesola disclosed this in Katsina on Tuesday while inaugurating the Katsina State headquarters of the service.

“The order from the President Muhammadu Buhari is that between now and the time we will conclude elections, you must make sure our borders are secured.

“You must make sure that our borders are perfectly secured from illegal immigrants who may want to come in to create problems during elections, or illegally participating in the elections.

“The service should live up to the directives of Mr President,” he said.

The minister also tasked them on ensuring the documentation of all migrants.

Aregbesola said that Katsina State had 400 kilometers border lines and 14 border positions which the service needed to protect.

He said that government was upgrading the capacity of the NIS to effectively control the nation’s borders.

“We are deploying electronic digital technology to ensure 24/7 surveillance of the 5,000 kilometers border lines.

“We have already awarded the contract, so, very soon, the Comptroller-General, from his office, will be able to see what is happening anytime at any border point,” he said.

In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Masari, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Muntari Lawal, commended the NIS for the project and affirmed the administration’s readiness to support the service to secure the nation’s borders.

Also speaking, the State Controller, Mr Bello Garba, who reiterated the commitment of officers and men to their responsibilities, said that the service currently had 688 officers and men across the state.

He listed key functions of NIS including issuance of traveling documents to qualified Nigerians, controlling the movement of migrants after entering, and preventing illegal migrants from coming in.

Other functions include warding off persons seeking to come into Nigeria through illegal routes, and apprehending human traffickers.

  • AfDB urges open borders to encourage free trade

AfDB urges open borders to encourage free trade

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has urged African countries to open their borders to encourage the promotion of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Mr Lamin Barrow, Director-General, Nigeria Country Department, AfDB, said this on the sideline of the release of the Africa Visa Openness Report in Balaclava, Mauritius.

The report was released by the African Union (AU) and the AfDB at the 2022 African Economic Conference (AEC).

Barrow said more needed to be done as it was pertinent for Africa to hasten free trade of goods and services within the continent.

“I think we are talking about the era of the African continental free trade area. So, all the African countries really should open their borders toward Africans.

“I think it is a paradox as we know that non-Africans can enter and move across Africa easier than our own fellow Africans.

“I think that the minimum we can do is to equalise that opportunity. And then of course, we go further and make it easy for any African to wake up and move across without the need for visas.”

President of the AfDB, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, said there was need to break all barriers that impeded the free movement of people across the continent.

“This is especially the workers. This is vital for promoting investment,” he said.

Also in the report, Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission, said restricting Africans’ ability to move across borders impedes trade and stifles industrialisation.

“It discourages innovation and stymies the formation of regional value chains. It is not enough to agree on rules of origin that promote “Made in Africa” products.

“For AfCFTA to succeed, non-tariff barriers to trade must be dismantled, too. Among other things, Africans must be free to move around the continent without having to apply for costly and time-consuming visas to study, trade, and develop their businesses.”

The deputy chairperson also said the Agenda 2063 sought to create a prosperous Africa whose development was people-driven, relying on the potential offered by African people, especially its women and youth.

Furthermore, Ms Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, Acting Vice President, Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery, AfDB, in the report, said the bank was supporting countries and regions as they developed policies.

Akin-Olugbade said the policies would facilitate the movement of professionals, trades, people and investors from abroad.

“And we are promoting best practices in trade facilitation for public and private actors alike.

“We understand that freeing the movement of people creates a more favourable business environment, attracts investment, and stimulates intra- and interregional trade.

“It also promotes social cohesion and improves African citizen’s quality of life. Africa deserves nothing less,” she said.

The report is also known as the Africa Visa Openness Index (AVOI).

It measures the extent to which African countries are open to visitors from other African countries.

The index analyses each country’s visa requirements to show which countries on the continent facilitate travel to their territory.

For each country, the AVOI calculates the number of African countries whose citizens must obtain a visa before travelling there.

It also calculates the number of countries whose citizens may obtain a visa upon arrival, and the number of countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter.

Each country is then assigned a visa openness score and ranked accordingly.

First published in 2016, the AVOI also track changes in countries’ scores over time.

This shows how countries’ policies are evolving as regards the freedom of movement across Africa.

New Zealand border to fully reopen on July 31

New Zealand will fully open its border to the world from July 31, two months earlier than expected, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Wednesday.

The country closed its border to almost all travellers in March 2020.

“New Zealand is in demand and now fully open for business,” Ardern said.

The final part of the border reopening means the country will open for all travellers needing visas – including tourists, workers, families and students.

The maritime border will also reopen, allowing cruise ships to visit the country.

From May 1, vaccinated travellers from visa-waiver countries, including Germany and Britain, were able to enter New Zealand.

Visitors must undergo a COVID-19 test before departure and upon arrival but do not need to self-isolate.

The prime minister said covid monitoring would continue at the border at present.

Ardern, however, said she is “confident” pre-departure testing would be scrapped by July 31.

New Zealand, a country of some five million people, has reported more than one million cases of COVID-19 and about 800 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.

  • Reps shut down motion to reopen borders

Reps shut down motion to reopen borders

The House of Representatives has shut down a motion to reopen Idiroko Border and other land borders in the country.

This followed a motion by Rep. Kolawole Lawal (APC-Ogun) at plenary on Wednesday in in Abuja.

Lawal had moved a motion on the urgent need to reopen Idiroko Border and other land borders in the country.

He said that though the border closure was sequel to effort by the Federal Government to curb smuggling of goods.

He, however, said that before the closure, the Nigeria-Benin Republic Border at Idiroko in Ogun alone generated annual revenue of over N6 billion.

He said that the Seme, Illela, Maigatari and Mfun land borders had since been reopened leaving other land borders still closed.

The lawmaker said that since the closure of Nigeria’s borders in August 2019, residents of Idiroko had witnessed massive economic downturn.

He also stated the government’s decision to ban illegal importation of food items under the guise of border closure had not increased farmers’ food production as the country is experiencing food inflation.

According to him, if Idiroko and other land borders across the country are not urgently reopened, the people will further suffer.

“And, considering the growing agitation as a result of the closure, this may resort to aggravated crimes to survive as the country continues to lose huge revenue.

However, most of the lawmaker, who spoke on the motion, opposed the reopening of the border.

Rep Rotimi Agunsoye (APC-Lagos) said that it was important for the government to tighten the closure and ensure all the borders were closed to solve the problem of insecurity.

He said that the boarder must be closed, but added that as at now the borders were not closed as they should.

Also, Rep Ahmed Wase, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, said that the closure of the border had strengthened the fight against arms proliferation.

He stated that some of the things happening at the boarders were sequel to their porosity which could threaten national security

Rep Ben Ila , Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, noted that keeping the border close for now was the best for the country.

She added that the move was good for “our farmers and even technologist, who are currently making a fortune out of the closure and this will help grow the country.”

“Let us leave our borders close for now in the interest of the country,” she said.

Also, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep Femi Gbajabiamila, while lending his voice to the debate said there was need to consider security of the country before talking of free trade.

According to him, we have to choose between security and free trade, though some people said it had not work, what if the borders have not been closed, I really don’t know what would have happened.

“We should mind internal security, though some say it is hurting employment in term of globalization,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rep Osai Osai (PDP-Delta) disagreed with his colleagues, adding that the Federal Government recently signed an agreement with other countries to allow free trade and free movement.

He added that this policy was to encourage employment, adding that with the border closure, young Nigerians were being deprived the privilege of making something via the agreement signed by the president.

Yoruba nation agitators forcefully reopen Idiroko border

There was tension on Saturday at Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State when some Yoruba nation agitators stormed the area and forcefully opened its land border.

They were, however, swiftly repelled by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service who were manning the border town between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

The land border had been closed by the Federal Government since 2019 when it directed that all forms of importation be done through the seaports.

A video circulated on social media showed a gun being snatched away from an Immigration officer.

In the 19-minute-and-23 -second video clip, a man in a yellow T-shirt can be seen shooting the gun into the air to the admiration of others at the scene.

Different voices are heard in the video calling on soldiers and other security agents to come out and shoot.

They destroyed the gates at the border, screaming, “We have opened the border at Idi-Iroko!”

They also asked people to begin their importing business through the route.

During the invasion, a young man, who was accused of trying to record the incident with his mobile phone, was attacked and beaten to a pulp.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, Hammed Oloyede, confirmed the incident.

He, however, said the agitators were repelled.

Denying attacks on any Customs officer, Oloyede said the situation was under control.

“There was no attack on our patrol bases or checkpoints. Those guys were just doing their own. They tried to attack one patrol point, but it was repelled. The situation is under control. There is no problem,” he said.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Yoruba nation agitation, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, in a video commended the actions of the agitators.

He accused the Federal Government of shutting down the land borders in the South-West while those in the North were open.
