Borussia Dortmund into last 16 of Champions League

Borussia Dortmund clinched their spot in the Champions League last 16 after a goalless draw against Sporting in the second leg of their knockout play-off tie.

The return leg was a formality after the German side posted a comprehensive 3-0 victory in Lisbon last week with goals from Serhou Guirassy, Pascal Gross and Karim Adeyemi.

Dortmund were dominant and had the chance to break the deadlock when they won a penalty in the second half after Rui Silva’s challenge on Adeyemi, but the Sporting goalkeeper made amends by keeping out Guirassy’s spot-kick.

The hosts, who lost last season’s final to Real Madrid at Wembley, will face Aston Villa or Lille in the two-legged last-16 tie next month.

Sporting, league leaders in Portugal by two points, were a big disappointment and never looked like clawing back the deficit.

They made five changes for the return leg with their top scorer Viktor Gyokeres and winger Francisco Trincao not even in the travelling squad, while Niko Kovac named an unchanged Dortmund starting line-up.

Sporting showed little intent going forward and it took 27 minutes for the game to produce its first shot on target as Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer let fly a venomous strike from the edge of the box that was parried behind by Silva.

Guirassy, the leading scorer in this season’s Champions League with 10 goals, then fired straight at Silva, before Sabitzer sent another effort sail over the goal as a quiet first half came to a close.

The Sporting custodian was tested by Adeyemi soon after the restart and then saved spectacularly from Daniel Svensson before he stopped Guirassy’s low 58th-minute penalty.

Giovanni Reyna, fresh off the bench, then hit the post for the home side, while captain Emre Can had a close-range header ruled out for offside as new boss Kovac remained winless at home after two games.

Transfer: Borussia Dortmund turn to Chelsea outcast

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is eager to facilitate an exit for Ben Chilwell this winter.

The left back, who is out of favor at Stamford Bridge, could be offered an escape route by Borussia Dortmund.

The German club is seeking alternatives after missing out on Chilwell’s teammate Renato Veiga, who opted for a loan move to Juventus instead.

According to Football Insider, Chilwell, who has been told he has no future at Chelsea, is not in demand due to his £190K-a-week wages.

Chelsea may need to subsidize his wages, similar to the arrangement with Raheem Sterling at Arsenal.

Veiga, who joined Chelsea six months ago, sought more first-team football, prompting his move to Juve.

Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund sack coach Nurin Sahin

Borussia Dortmund have sacked coach Nuri Sahin, the German soccer club said on Wednesday, after Tuesday’s shock 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League.

Tuesday’s loss stretched their losing run to four games across all competitions.

“Borussia Dortmund have released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments,” said the club in a statement.

The Ruhr valley club, 2024 Champions League finalists, conceded two goals in two minutes in the second half against the Italians after taking a 15th minute lead.

They have also lost all three league matches in 2025, dropping down to 10th place in the Bundesliga and putting their participation next season in Europe’s premier club competition at risk.

“After four defeats in a row and only one win from the last nine games … we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation,” Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken said in the statement.

“This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sahin, 36, leaves the club just a little over half a year after being appointed to replace Edin Terzic as the new coach.

The German-born former Turkey international was a former youth and senior player at the club. He became an assistant coach at Dortmund in 2024 after a two-year coaching spell at Turkey’s Antalyaspor. He had signed a contract to 2027.

The club said it would soon announce who would be in charge for this week’s league game against Werder Bremen.

UCL: Real Madrid fight back to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2

Vinicius Junior scored a hat-trick as title holders Real Madrid fought from two goals down to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Antonio Rüdiger’s header in the 60th, Vinicius Junior two minutes later, Lucas Vazquez in the 83rd and Vinicius Junior with a stunning solo in the 86th and in stoppage time clinched victory for the Spanish side.

The final result had appeared unlikely at half-time when Dortmund led 2-0 from Donyell Malen and Jamie Bynoe Gittens.

The record 15-time champions Real prevailed like in last season’s final they had won 2-0 against Dortmund at Wembley.

Real rebounded from a 1-0 defeat against Lille and have six points, the same as Dortmund who dropped their first points in their late collapse, after having won their first two games.

“We changed formation, but also the dynamics in the second half. This is our competition and make no mistake we want to win it again,” Vinicius Junior told Movistar.

  • UCL Final: Real Madrid to battle Borussia Dortmund in Wembley showdown tonight

UCL Final: Real Madrid to battle Borussia Dortmund in Wembley showdown tonight

The final of this season’s UEFA Champions League will be played tonight with La Liga Champions, Real Madrid  slugging it out with a prominent team from the German Bundesliga Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium in England.

UCL  serial winners, Real Madrid are looking to win it for a record-extending 15th time in their history while Dortmund are looking to caress the trophy for the  second time in the club’s history.

Madrid have made it to the final 6 times in the last 11 years and that is unprecedented.

However, many didn’t give Dortmund a chance to get to the finals this season but the die schwarzelben have proved bookmakers wrong by defeating other favourites on their way to reach the final.

The Bundesliga upstarts are looking to win it for only the second time.

If the hype and mystery of Madrid must be believed, then there is no need for the game. Just give them the trophy in Spain.

But it would be a big mistake to dismiss Dortmund so easily after surprising many to reach the final 11 years after losing to Madrid.

Madrid, who clinched their 33rd league title this season, have reached the 70th European showpiece with an unbeaten record in the competition.

Dortmund are also in fine form and second only to Madrid in the competition this season with only one defeat in their last 11 European matches.

So, this will be quite an intriguing clash in London – the same venue Dortmund lost the 2013 final to rivals Bayern Munich.

Although Real Madrid have been seen as  the hotter of the two sides and the team who could possibly win the title but the two previous Europa competitions final  won by Atalanta of Italy and Olympiacos of Greece where they defeated Bayer Leverkusen and Florentina respectively have given some pundits a headache and pushed them to give Dortmund a surprising victory against the favourite tonight at Wembley.

  • PSG fire blanks as Hummels powers Borussia Dortmund into UCL final

PSG fire blanks as Hummels powers Borussia Dortmund into UCL final

Borussia Dortmund will play the Champions League final for the first time in 11 years after they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in France on Tuesday.

PSG hit the woodwork four times, while Dortmund needed only Mats Hummels’ header in the 50th minute to seal their spot in the final at London’s Wembley on June 1.

The German side won the first leg 1-0 last week.

Wembley hosted Dortmund when they played their most recent Champions League final in 2013.

Back then, they were defeated 2-1 by Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

Hummels was part of the squad who had to settle for second place 11 years ago, as well as forward Marco Reus.

Reus said last week that he will leave Dortmund at the end of the season after more than 21 years of service.

The German clubs could have rematch of their 2013 final if Bayern overcome Real Madrid in Spain on Wednesday after a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

Overall, this is the third time Dortmund would play in the Champions League final.

Though the 2013 game didn’t go their way, they won the trophy in 1997.

Tuesday’s loss meant another champion’s league misery for Kylian Mbappe, who had the sight of goal for the first time in the seventh minute of the match.

He, however, did not hit his volley the way he would have liked as the ball went straight to Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The guests had the best chance of the first half in a counter-attack after Nico Scholotterback cleared a dangerous cross.

Dortmund looked set to get the opener when Karim Adeyemi burst away from two markers, but keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma stretched his hand to make a big save.

PSG could have levelled the tie shortly after the break as Gonçalo Ramos flicked Mbappe’s cross up in the air and the ball fell to Warren Zaïre-Emery, who hit the post from close range.

But Dortmund found a quick response to put down PSG’s initial spark in the second half and were on target in the 50th.

Julian Brandt’s corner came in from the left and Hummels got away from Lucas Beraldo to head the ball in.

PSG were again denied by the post in the 61st after Nuno Mendes had a go from long range.

Dortmund, meanwhile, thought they had a second when Hummels scored in the 77th, but he was offside.

To complete their dreadful evening, the Paris team hit the woodwork two more times – Mbappe in the 86th and Vitinha in the 88th minute.

Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha levelled the tie for PSG and the deadly Mbappe hit a brace to put them into the final four for the first time since 2021.

The French champions are yet to win the trophy despite huge investment but demonstrated they have the attacking weapons in their squad to do so.

  • Karim Adeyemi demands more respect for private life

Karim Adeyemi demands more respect for private life

Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi has hit out at criticism linking his poor form to his relationship with rapper Loredana.

The German international and the Swiss-born musician first appeared together publicly on social media in July.

Since then, Adeyemi has struggled with injuries and lack of consistency having shone at times in the prior season.

But he said there was no connection.

“I knew what I was getting myself into, that she is a person who is in the public eye.

“But I found it crass that people reacted like that after a bad game.

“It is not unfair on me because I didn’t play well. It was unfair to my girlfriend.

“She has nothing to do with how I play and perform on the pitch,’’ he said in an interview published by the club.

The 22-year-old would like to see more respect for the private lives of famous people.

“Sometimes I find it strange how some people take it upon themselves to make judgments about people they don’t know,’’ he added.

Adeyemi was self-critical of his performances so far this season and a place in the Germany squad for the home Euros in June looked far from certain.

“It wasn’t a good first half of the season. I’m not happy with myself.

“You don’t often get a European Championship in your own country. Of course, you want to be there and play for your country.

“But I first have to get fit again and show myself,’’ he said amid criticism of him pulling out of a Germany under-21 squad in November.
