Bellingham named Bundesliga player of season

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham has been named Bundesliga player of the 2022/2023 season, the German league said on Monday.

Even though Borussia Dortmund failed to claim the title after needing only a home win against Mainz in the final matchday, Bellingham’s “performances are worthy of recognition,” the Bundesliga said.

“The England international may still be just 19 years of age, but he possesses leadership skills beyond his years,” it added.

Borussia Dortmund were held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz, which paved the way for a 11th consecutive trophy for Bayern Munich, who claimed a late 2-1 win at Cologne.

Bellingham was only on the bench during the game against Mainz due to knee issues.

He moved to Dortmund from Birmingham in 2019 and became one of the most influential players in the squad.

His time in Germany, however, might be close to an end, as Bellingham has been heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid.

Bundesliga: Bayern, Dortmund take title challenge to the wire

With two games remaining to go in the Bundesliga, both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are in the fight to finish.

Dortmund cut Bayern’s four points to just one after defeating Monchengladbach 5-2 in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter.

Bayern had initially brushed Schalke- 04 by 6-0 at the Allianz Arena.

A measured Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel said his side “made a step in the right direction — our buried self confidence is coming back” but said “there’s no reason for euphoria, we’ll be tested again on Saturday (against RB Leipzig).”

Veteran Bayern captain Thomas Mueller, given a starting berth after being named on the bench in his side’s last two matches, settled the home side’s nerves early, slotting in after 21 minutes, his first goal in eight matches.

Joshua Kimmich doubled Bayern’s lead shortly after, converting a penalty despite losing his footing after Jamal Musiala copped an arm in the box.

Bayern have dominated the Bundesliga for a decade and will be gunning for their 11th straight title but this time not with a big fight from Borrussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund scored four goals in a dazzling 32-minute first-half spell to ease past Borussia Moenchengladbach 5-2 on Saturday and stay in the title hunt with two matches left in the Bundesliga season.

The hosts shot out of the blocks and went in front after five minutes when Donyell Malen nodded in from close range after Sebastien Haller’s shot from the edge of the box got deflected.

Jude Bellingham slotted in a penalty in the 18th minute before Haller’s spectacular backheel flick made it 3-0 just two minutes later.

With Gladbach down for the count, Haller added another goal with a well-timed volley from Malen’s cutback in the 32nd.

Dortmund are on 67 points in second place, one behind leaders Bayern Munich, 6-0 winners over Schalke 04 earlier on Saturday. Dortmund travel to Augsburg next weekend while Bayern face Champions League hopefuls RB Leipzig.

  • UCL: Chelsea defeat Dortmund 2-0 to progress to Quarter-final

UCL: Chelsea defeat Dortmund 2-0 to progress to Quarter-final

Chelsea on Tuesday night showed superiority against German opposition, Borussia Dortmund as they overcome a 1-0 deficit in the first leg at Signal lduna to record a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge to reach the Quarter-final of this year’s UEFA Champions League.

Kai Havertz converted from the penalty spot after the it was retaken.

The first attempt was missed but a VAR review for encroachment saved his blushes and he made no mistake the second time.

The German produced a marvellous piece of skill in the build-up to the opener, too, with Raheem Sterling lashing the ball into the roof of the net at the second time of asking.

Dortmund – who had won every game they’ve played in 2023 leading into this game – huffed and puffed, but could not find a response.

Chelsea have now progressed from five Champions League ties after losing the first leg, the joint-most of any team – along with Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid.

The Blues have now won  two straight games in a row after going through a phase of unwinning streak in all competitons.

  • UCL: Adeyemi’s solo goal put Dortmund at vantage position against Chelsea

UCL: Adeyemi’s solo goal put Dortmund at vantage position against Chelsea

A beautiful solo effort by Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi helped the German side secure a slim 1-0 win over Chelsea in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League game at the Signal Iduna Park.

Adeyemi latched on to a loose ball before dribbling past Enzo Fernandez and Kepa Arizabalaga to give the home side all three points ahead of the reverse fixture in two weeks time.

While Chelsea manager Graham Potter may still be working on how to get his squad of expensive newcomers to work as a team, the visitors’ individual quality and speed on the counter was obvious throughout.

Borussia Dortmund are also hoping to win the German Bundesliga many years after it last won it, but presently occupy the third position on the log with just three points seperating  it and leaders Bayern Munich.

Chelsea on the other hand are not in the running to win the English Premier League as they presently occupy the 10th position on the log and are out of all domestic cup competitions.

The only hopes of the Blues winning a silverware this season is the UEFA Champions League and to achieve this result the 1-0 first leg loss to Dortmund must be upturned at the Stamford Bridge in two weeks time.

Jude Bellingham makes final Chelsea decision

Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham has been put off signing for London club Chelsea.

Per Christian Falk on CaughtOffisde, the 19-year-old is not willing to join the Stamford Bridge club.

Bellingham is concerned about the sheer number of players the Blues are buying.

He does not believe there is a concrete plan in place to get the best out of new signings.

He is thought to see Liverpool as his ideal destination, while the two Manchester clubs may also come into his thinking.

There is also the possibility he chooses Real Madrid and does not return to the Premier League.

Why we didn’t sign Bellingham – Ex-Arsenal scout

Arsenal did not sign Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City in 2020 because of his price.

The 19-year-old is already seen as one of the best midfielders on the planet.

Bellingham, now at Borussia Dortmund, is wanted by Real Madrid, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and a host of other teams.

Ex-Arsenal scout Francis Cagigao has now mentioned the club’s interest in Bellingham from 2020.

“I saw him for the first time when he was 16 years old,” Cagigao told AS.

“I wanted to sign him for Arsenal, but he was already too expensive.

“He is very good. What is clear is that if they have paid that amount for Enzo [Fernandez], he is also going to pay for Bellingham.”

Bundesliga: Moukoko fires Dortmund to the top of the league

Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund have risen to the top of the German league after teenage substitute Youssoufa Moukoko scored the only goal of the encounter between Dortmund and Schalke 04.

Meanwhile, rivals Bayern haven’t won in their last four games having played three draws and a loss to Augsburg on Saturday afternoon.

In Dortmund, the home side looked set to lose another chance to capitalize on Bayern’s slip-up, before a late goal from 17-year-old striker Moukoko saw them claim all three points.

Augsburg’s Florian Niederlechner had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after 11 minutes, but a crucial intervention from Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano saw his shot scuffed into the hands of Manuel Neuer.

Bayern Munich have won the German league 7 consecutive times.

Liverpool would’ve been better than Dortmund – Gotze

Eintracht Frankfurt signing Mario Gotze admits he regrets not joining Premier League side, Liverpool.

Gotze made the decision to not to follow his former Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp to Anfield, instead choosing to return to Dortmund in 2016.

Gotze explained his decision, telling BILD: “Liverpool had finished eighth in the first season with Jurgen and had not qualified for the Champions League.

“Even in the years before, this was not the club that always played at the top. I came from Bavaria and had this claim.”

He added: “Dortmund had previously played a top season under Thomas Tuchel. BVB was on top. Jürgen was still in the process of building something. In retrospect, you have to say: Liverpool would have been better.”
