Haaland is a bastard – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola branded Erling Haaland a “bastard” after their Champions League defeat of Borussia Dortmund.

After the 2-1 win, the Spaniard revealed afterwards how he struggled to contain football’s hottest properties.

When asked if he was surprised about how the Dortmund midfield pressed his team, Guardiola told DAZN: “No, not surprised because I faced them when I was at Bayern Munich and they played five at the back.

“The rest of them play that system and the quality of [Mahmoud] Dahoud, [Jude] Bellingham and, of course, the pace of the people up front – the quality is there. We know it was.

“But when you want to press they play long balls. They play long balls to Haaland – Haaland is a bastard. Link-up [play] is always perfect and they have the pace so we knew it was not easy to control them.”

You’re not ready to leave, Dortmund chief tells Haaland

Borussia Dortmund advisor Matthais Sammer says Erling Haaland should stay where he is.

The Norway striker is being linked with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United ahead of the summer market.

“I would recommend Erling also see the value of Borussia Dortmund,” Sammer told BILD.

“The club has given him a lot. From here he can only go to a handful of clubs.

“When Erling takes the next step, he must be a finished product, perfect. He is very, very good. He needs to improve some details.

“Robert (Lewandowski) was complete when he left for Bayern. It was clear: he went straight into the starting eleven. But as a counter-example, Ousmane Dembélé left for Barcelona perhaps a moment too soon. Erling is far in his development, but he is not complete.”

Pep Guardiola speaks on Sancho’s Man City exit

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola insists there’s no regrets losing Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho will face his old club next month after City and BVB were drawn in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Guardiola remarked: “I’m not sorry. If he is happy, then I am happy.

“It was Jadon’s own decision. He is doing a great job at Borussia, all that remains is to congratulate him. He is an exceptional footballer. We wanted him to stay at Manchester City, but he wanted to leave, so we decided not to keep him.

“I wish him all the best, except for the game against our team.”

As such, BVB are now signaling they have no interest in parting with the striker this summer.

Jurgen Klopp reveals best player he has ever managed

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Bayern Munich ace Robert Lewandowski is the best player he has ever managed during his spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Over that time he has taken charge of countless world-class players, but one in particular stands out for the German.

When asked during an interview with Bild who was the best player he had worked with as a manager, Klopp did not hesitate in his answer.

“Robert Lewandowski. It actually won’t be fair to say that about any other player except Lewy,” he explained.

“What he has made out of his potential, how he pushed himself to become the player he is today, that’s extraordinary.”

According to the coach, it is not just the Poland international’s innate ability in front of goal that makes him such a fine player, but also his work ethic and determination.

“Lewy took every step he needed to take to be that goal machine. Every one,” he added.

“He has immersed himself in the game, he just knows in every situation what he has to do, where he has to go. Lewy is an absolute machine.”

Champions League: Why Sevilla lost to Borussia Dortmund

Youssef En-Nesyri claimed Sevilla “lacked a bit of luck” when they crashed out of the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Having suffered a 3-2 home defeat to the Bundesliga side in the first leg Round of 16 tie, the Spanish top-flight side needed an away win in the reverse fixture to stand a chance of progressing to the last eight.

Nevertheless, they played out 2-2 draw at Signal Iduna Park and ultimately kissed the competition goodbye after a 5-4 aggregate defeat.

We came very close to tying the playoff. We had no luck, we lowered our concentration in a few seconds and they scored that goal,” the Morocco international told the club website.

“In the second half they scored the second, but I am very happy with the work and effort of the team. You have to stay on the same line, face the next few games.

“I am very happy [with my performance], although we have lacked a few minutes. We have to go ahead and look for points in the next few games.

“We have demonstrated what we have and what we have done. We lacked a bit of luck to score goals, but football is like that.”

UCL: Haaland brace helps Dortmund to beat Sevilla

Erling Braut Haaland continued his stunning scoring run in the Champions League as Borussia Dortmund put aside their domestic woes to take control of their last-16 tie with Sevilla.

They trailed early on to a Suso shot that deflected in off Mats Hummels.

Mahmoud Dahoud levelled before Haaland got his 17th goal in 13 games in the competition to put them ahead.

It was 18 soon after via a neat finish, with Luuk de Jong scoring late on to give Sevilla hope in the tie.

The substitutes side-foot finish from a free-kick was reward for a concerted push from the home side that ultimately came too late to level the leg.

There was a VAR check for a penalty for the Spanish side in added time for a potential foul by Thomas Meunier on De Jong but the video officials deemed the contact between the two legal.

The second leg in Germany is on 9 March.

  • Klopp was a ‘bad teacher’ to me – Lewandowski

Klopp was a ‘bad teacher’ to me – Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski has spoken in glowing terms about his relationship with Jurgen Klopp, saying the now Liverpool boss was the “bad teacher” who propelled him on the path to greatness.

After finding life tough in his teenage years, Lewandowski began to score regularly for Znicz Pruszkow and Lech Poznan, which earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2010.

Lewandowski’s start to life in the Bundesliga was not smooth sailing, as he was played in an unfamiliar No.10 position and found life tough in training under Klopp.

Things came to a head following a Champions League defeat to Marseille in September of 2011.

Lewandowski confronted Klopp and asked his manager what he wanted from him. Despite his German being patchy at that stage, the Poland international picked up on what was required of him and things blossomed to the extent that he won a second Bundesliga title before securing a move to Bayern Munich.

Revealing how his relationship with Klopp developed to the Players’ Tribune, Lewandowski said: “Jurgen was not only a father figure to me. As a coach, he was like the “bad” teacher. And I mean that in the best sense of the word.

“Let me explain. Think back to you when you were in school. Which teacher do you remember the most? Not the one who made life easy for you and never expected anything from you. No, no, no. You remember the bad teacher, the one who was strict with you. The one who put pressure on you and did everything to get the best out of you. That’s the teacher who made you better, right? And Jurgen was like that.

“He was not content to let you be a B student, you know? Jurgen wanted A+ students. He didn’t want it for him. He wanted it for you.

“He taught me so much. When I arrived at Dortmund, I wanted to do everything quickly: strong pass, one touch only. Jurgen showed me to calm down – to take two touches if necessary.

“It was totally against my nature, but soon I was scoring more goals.

“When I had that down, he challenged me to speed it up again. One touch. BANG. Goal. He slowed me down to speed me up. It sounds simple, but it was genius, really.”

  • Haaland ready to leave Borussia Dortmund – Matthaus

Haaland ready to leave Borussia Dortmund – Matthaus

Erling Braud Haaland is ready to leave Borussia Dortmund, according to Germany legend Lothar Matthaus.

The Norwegian has scored 33 goals in 32 appearances for Dortmund since moving to Signal Igunda Park in January 2019.

Manchester City, Real Madrid and Manchester United have all been linked with the 20-year-old.

“Erling Haaland is a win not just for Dortmund but for the entire Bundesliga,” Matthaus tolld the Bundesliga’s official website.

“At the age of 20, he is a machine. He is a flying striker. He brings a positive energy in the team while also scoring goals. He is irreplaceable.

“Erling Haaland is regarded at Dortmund like Robert Lewandowski is at Bayern: the player up front who is not only responsible for the goals but in charge of dragging the team with him. He is a leader at the age of 20.

“That says a lot and on top of that, he knows what he needs to do. He works defensively as well, something I really enjoy seeing Robert Lewandowski do as well. He is not one to just stay forward. His mannerisms as well, for a 20-year-old, to not only think of himself but of his team.

“This positivity that he radiates, radiates on the team which is why I think that someday, Haaland will not be playing at Dortmund anymore and will make the next step. He is already ready and we are proud to have him in the Bundesliga.

“Dortmund need to be pleased to have gotten him because he is a striker that fits to a club with such emotions.”
