  • CBN private investigator rejects Titan boss, Lemo’s request to reschedule meeting

CBN private investigator rejects Titan boss, Lemo’s request to reschedule meeting

The Office of the Special Central Bank of Nigeria Investigator has rejected a request by the Chairman of Titan Trust Bank Limited, Babatunde Lemo, for rescheduling the December 28, 2023, meeting with investigators till January 7.

The investigator warned that the failure of Lemo and other major shareholders of TTB to attend today’s meeting may lead to the forfeiture of their shareholding and interests in Titan Trust Bank and Union Bank Nigeria Plc.

This was contained in a letter to the TTB chairman dated December 27, 2023, and signed by the Head of Operations, Office of the Special Investigator, Eloho Okpoziakpo, a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The letter was in response to a letter from Lemo’s lawyer seeking a shift of today’s meeting until January.

The investigator also turned down a proposal by Lemo that the major shareholders of Titan Trust Bank, Mr Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara, should be given seven days to prove their purported ownership of TTB and Union Bank of Nigeria or forfeit the shares to the Federal Government.

The Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, had summoned Lemo, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, in connection with the acquisition of Union Bank of Nigeria Plc by TTB.

The TTB chairman was directed to report to the Department of Force Intelligence opposite the Force headquarters, Shehu Shagari Way, Abuja, on Thursday (today), where he will be grilled by a team of detectives probing the UBN acquisition.

Lemo was further instructed to come along with Vink and Savara to meet with the team of special investigators.

Obazee stated in his investigation report that some persons were used as proxies by a former CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, to set up Titan Trust Bank and acquire Union Bank, all from ill-gotten wealth.

However, Lemo, in a letter by his lawyer, G. Elias, dated December 27, requested a shift of the meeting with investigators as he was away from Nigeria.

The letter, which was signed by Prof. Gbolahan Elias, SAN, read in part, “Unfortunately, both Mr Tunde Lemo and the two largest ultimate investors in the banks (Mr. Cornelius Vink; Mr. Rahul Savara) are away from Nigeria at the moment for family and other reasons.

“That is typically so at this time of the year. They are not due to be in Nigeria before the second week in January 2024. They will honour the invitations fully soon after they come in.

“With regard to the information requested, which we submitted earlier on 1st September 2023 at the DSS HQ as evidenced in Annex 1 therewith, we will resubmit the information tomorrow morning for your kind review. The individual invitees and the Banks re-iterate their willingness and readiness to co-operate with your good selves in your important work.”

The investigator dismissed the request for a postponement of the meeting with the TTB major shareholders, noting that Lemo had earlier agreed to attend today’s meeting.

The letter noted, “Reference is made to the law firm of G.ELIAS letter dated 27th December 2023 in response to the Special Investigator’s invitation to you via a letter with reference number CR:3000/TSI/ABJ/VOL.1/69 dated 24th December 2023.

“I am directed to inform you that the Special Investigator is fully aware that you are in the United Kingdom to celebrate your birthday. This you made aware to the Special Investigator when you agreed to attend a meeting to be scheduled for 28th December 2023 and also proposed that Mr Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara be given seven days to prove their purported ownership of Titan Trust Bank and Union Bank of Nigeria or forfeit the shares to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“Accordingly, this excuse given by your good selves through your lawyers is unacceptable and regarded as obstruction of the Special Investigator in the course of his duties.

“We want to put it on record that neither you (Babatunde Lemo) nor Cornelius Vink nor Rahul Savara ever submitted any of these requested documents to the investigating team at the Department of State Service or anywhere else before now.

“In fact, Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara have never presented themselves to the Special Investigator since 28th August 2023 when they were first invited for interview.’’

The Special Investigator informed the TTB chairman that documents submitted through proxies will not be accepted “as Mr Cornelius Vink, Mr Rahul Savara and your good self will be required to speak to whatever document(s)/information you present during the meeting.”

The letter added, ‘’Consequently, I am to further inform you that your invitation to appear before the Special Investigator on 28th December 2023 by 2pm prompt in respect of the matter under investigation and for which you had earlier made statement stands.

“Kindly note that the conditions on paragraphs 6 to 8 in our earlier letter to you with reference number CR:3000/TSI/ABJ/VOL. 1/69 dated 24th December 2023 remain effective and shall be triggered if you or Messrs Vink and Savara fail to attend the meeting as scheduled.”

Obazee, who was appointed special investigator in July 2023, submitted his final report tagged, ‘Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable offences)’ to the Presidency on December 20.

In two separate reports on the acquisition of UBN and Keystone Bank submitted to President Bola Tinubu on December 20, Obazee also revealed that Emefiele used proxies to acquire Keystone Bank without evidence of payment.

  • DSS opens up on alleged looting of palliative fund, others by its boss, Yusuf Bichi

DSS opens up on alleged looting of palliative fund, others by its boss, Yusuf Bichi

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Saturday opened up on allegations levied against its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi by one Jackson Ude on his X (Twitter) handle.

Dr Peter Afunanya, DSS Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, denied the claims by Ude, a notorous fake news pedler in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.

For one, the Service denies claims that Bichi looted funds budgeted as subsidy palliative for the welfare of Staff of DSS.

The DSS said contrary to the claim, Bichi gives top priority to staff welfare and judicious application of human and material resources without blemish.

Afunanya therefore said the allegations were false, adding that neither the D-G nor anyone acting on his directive had looted staff subsidy grant.

He added that no such grant had been made available to the Service as such could not have been looted.

He said Bichi had catered for the welfare of active and retired personnel adding that it was common knowledge that could be verified by Ude.

The so called “goodbye allowance” which Ude accused the D-G of granting himself is non-existent. It is only an imagination of the writer and his sponsors.

“But assuming the DG is paid any severance package at the end of his tenure, how is that unethical and outside established public service rule?
“While Ude is at his mischief once again and has continued to smear the image of Bichi as well as present him as corrupt, facts at the DSS show otherwise,” he said.

He added that from his retirement in 2018 and appointment as the DSS D-G, Bichi has remained spartan, accountable, transparent and incorruptible.

Afunanya said the DSS boss had also been resolute in running the Service and showed uncommon commitment in the management of its affairs.

“Notably, the Service is aware of the desperation and antics of Ude and his other hirelings to associate it with unnecessary controversies either during the 2023 Presidential election or the subsequent litigations following it.

“The recent campaign of calumny is one of such, but as always, the DSS boss is unperturbed.

The Service under him will continue to chart a professional course aimed at internal security of the country,” he said.

Afunanya therefore, urged the public to disregard the falsehood being peddled by Ude, whom he described as an known fake news merchant whose only stock in trade was to misinform and create division and violence.

He said the DSS boss would take appropriate legal steps to seek redress.

  • I killed my boss’s wife because he sacked me – suspect

A 37-years old driver, Morenikeji Adeyemi on Friday said he killed his boss’s wife, Oyewumi Ayanwale because his boss sacked him for no reason after four years of working with him.

Adeyemi who was paraded by the Oyo state police command in Ibadan said he was able to lure the victim under the pretense of taking her for prayers.

According to him, he strangled the victim to death and consequently made away with her vehicle.

Adeyemi who was arrested by the Anti-Kidnapping squad of the Police Headquarters, Ibadan, said he was hurt when his boss sacked him. He said “I was hurt when my boss sacked me.

That time, my wife just had her baby and because there was no income anymore, we lost the baby.” “So, I thought of a way to get back at him. Because it was so painful.

My boss’ wife had once told me about her spiritual challenges, and I had promised to take her to a place for prayers.” “I was able to use that as a premise to lure her and I told her that I was taking her to a place Awe along Awe/Oyo road.”

“We took her car and along the way, she said she was pressed, so, she went into the bush, I followed her and strangulated her by the river in the bush.”

“I then took her vehicle and ran away, before I was arrested two weeks ago.” The state police commissioner, Shina Olukolu who paraded the suspect at the command headquaters in Ibadan said the suspect was arrested at Sango Ota in Ogun state where he had relocated to after committing the crime.

  • Teenager sues boss, gets compensation for sexual harassment

Teenager sues boss, gets compensation for sexual harassment

A young girl has sued her boss and eventually won some damages for sexual harassment she suffered on the job.

The teenage schoolgirl stood up to her boss in her first ever job at Pizza Hut, and eventually won £15,000 damages for sexual harassment.

The girl, who was 16 when she started, was sexually harassed, intimidated and had her hours cut after she rejected her supervisor’s advances.

She was working 10 hours a week as a receptionist at Pizza Hut Delivery when she was targeted by Sultan Tanha.

Stratford employment tribunal in east London ruled he subjected her to “unjustified threats, humiliating behaviour and unwelcome sexual advances.”

His creepy behaviour included touching her by encouraging high fives, then trying to hold her hand, whisper in her ear and hold her around the waist.

But when she challenged his behaviour, Tanha would shout at her and find fault with her work.

She was also bullied by another supervisor, Heshmat Gholampour, known as Hesh.

Employment Judge Catrin Lewis said: “We find that the conduct of Sultan was unwanted conduct of a sexual nature.

“He made numerous attempts to have physical contact with the claimant, in his high-fiving her, holding her hand, hugging her and taking her by the waist and also in his conduct in going up to her and shaking the cheese and toppings over her and coming up behind her and whispering in her ear.

“We are satisfied that this had the effect of creating an intimidating, hostile and humiliating environment for the claimant at work and in the circumstances, we are satisfied that it was reasonable for it to have that effect: those circumstances, including the fact that the Claimant was 17 years old at the time, still at school and in her first job.

“We are satisfied that Sultan in criticising the claimant without justification and blaming her for things that she had not done, singling her out for criticism or criticising her for not being at her work station and reporting her to Heshmat when, in fact, it was his conduct which caused her to leave her work station, was less favourable treatment of the Claimant because of her rejection of his unwanted conduct of a sexual nature.

“When the claimant tried to move away, Sultan would still attempt, or make efforts, to try to have physical contact with her. He would come up behind her and whisper in her ear as an excuse to get too close to her.

“We find that the claimant did challenge him and ask him why he was standing so close and she would try to move away; in response to this, Sultan would try to deflect attention from himself and say to the claimant that she should move away and that she was crowding him.”

The girl was offered the job at Pizza Hut in August 2016, after her older sister, who worked there, introduced her.

But the harassment began after a change of supervisor and after her sister had left the job.

Judge Lewis said: “They would regularly speak to her rudely, start arguments with her and blame her for things that either she had not done or were not her fault.

“We accept the claimant found this upsetting and that she felt uncomfortable and dirty as a result.

“We find that the claimant was singled out by Sultan for this treatment.

“She was also told not to talk to people at work when others were allowed to chat and she was criticised for work issues that were not of her making and that this then led to her being criticised also by Hesh in turn.

“We also accept the claimant’s evidence that she found that she was having her shift cuts without warning or at short notice and we find that this contributed to her feeling of anxiety at work and her feelings that she was unable to raise her concerns or complaints with the respondent.”

Kashif Jaffer, who owns the franchise, was ordered to pay a total of £15,686 in damages, wages and interest.

She was awarded £13,000 for injury to feeling, along with a 15 per cent uplift due to breaching ACAS regulations taking the final figure to £14,950.

A Pizza Hut Delivery Spokesperson said: “The safety and wellbeing of our people is our top priority and we do not condone this behaviour.

“Mr. Tanha no longer works for the business and we are working closely with our franchisee to ensure the correct procedures are followed.”
