Soldiers’ killing: Abia govt. increases bounty to N30m

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia on Friday announced an increased of the N25 million bounty placed on the killers of five soldiers at Obikabia junction in Aba to N30 million.

Otti made the announcement when the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Hasan Abubakar, paid him a visit in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.

Recall that some gunmen had, on May 30, killed five soldiers at Obikabia junction in Aba.

The governor said that the increase in the bounty was necessary by an addition of N5 million by an indigene of the state based in U.S.A.

“Interestingly, the government has placed a bounty of N25 million and just yesterday, an Abia son, who also comes from Obingwa and lives in the United States, sent us N5 million to upgrade the bounty to N30 million.

“So I am happy to announce that the bounty has just been upgraded to N30 million, to encourage anyone that will have useful information that will lead to the apprehension of the criminals,” he said.

Otti further stated that the state government had also started working with the security agencies to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the state again.

He said that government had been working round the clock to ensure that the state remained safe and secure.

“We also want to thank the intelligence service of the DSS, as they dispatched quite some people here to help us to unravel this case.

“We are very single-minded about it. We must fish them out and ensure that they get the message that this place is a no-go area for terrorists, killers, kidnappers and other criminals,” the governor said.

  • Alleged brutalisation of minor: Enugu women place N1m bounty on Anambra woman

Alleged brutalisation of minor: Enugu women place N1m bounty on Anambra woman

Women from Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have placed N1 million bounty on an Anambra woman, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, who reportedly brutalised her 11-year-old househelp.

Operating under the auspices of Umuada Awgu Global Association (UAGA), the group also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Okafor to hand herself over to the police.

The Founder and President of UAGA, Chinemerem Anyi, announced the financial reward for any informant on the fleeing woman’s whereabouts at the group’s news briefing on the matter on Thursday in Enugu.

According to Anyi, anybody who avails the police, Anambra State Government or other relevant authorities with useful information that can lead to the woman’s arrest will smile home with N1 million from the group.

She said that Okafor, who hail from Anambra and lived in Onitsha, was accusing the victim of touching the private part of her eight-year-old daughter, while bathing her.

Anyi, who was flanked at the briefing by other members of the group, said “it beats our imagination that almost three weeks after the woman perpetrated the evil act, the police were still saying that she is still at large”.

She said that the organisation was beginning to smell a rat, “going by the manner the matter was being handled by the Anambra Police Command”.

She said that the group also issued the police 48-hour ultimatum to apprehend the perpetrator or incur its wrath.

She said: “The Awgu women have been resisting the temptation of taking the law into our hands over the matter as civilised people but we warn that such calm disposition should not be taken for granted or weakness.

“We are heartbroken over the barbaric act and today, we gathered for this important press briefing over the recent brutalisation of our daughter, Miss Happiness Nwafor, by her wicked madam.

“We are using this platform to call on the woman to better submit herself to the police or other relevant authorities, because no matter where she is, she will be fished out.

“Our searchlight is on you and we will not rest until justice is served on this matter,” Anyi said.

The group urged the police and Anambra Government to, as a matter of urgency, imploy every arsenal to apprehend the woman, saying that it was being pushed to the wall over the issue.

“Okafore has murdered sleep and cannot sleep, she has bitten more than she can chew,” it also said.

The group, therefore, called on mothers to bear the number of children they could carter for, so as to avoid giving out their underaged children as househelps.

The group had on February 7, staged a peaceful protest in Enugu, demanding justice for the victim.

In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development on Tuesday announced a N2 million reward for any person with useful information on the woman’s whereabouts.

Okafor allegedly brutalised her househelp, Happiness Nwafor, whom she brought in January to live with her.

She was reported to have inserted a hot knife into the minor’s private part and also burned her face and buttock with a hot electric iron.

Meanwhile, the Anambra Police Command has declared the woman, who is said to be at large, wanted.

  • U.S. sends message to ISWAP over $7m bounty for killing Shekau

U.S. sends message to ISWAP over $7m bounty for killing Shekau

The United States of America (USA) has said it will not pay the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) a promised $7 million bounty for killing Abubakar Shekau.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the United States Department Rewards for Justice Program made this known via Twitter on Friday.

“News reports today indicate that Boko Haram terrorist Abubakar Shekau blew himself up in a confrontation with ISIS affiliates.

“Hey, ISIS guys. To clarify: no – you are not eligible for the reward for information on his identity or location. That’s not how the program works,” the US Department Rewards for Justice Program tweeted.

TNG reports Shekau is the leader of Jama’atu Ahl as-Sunnah il-Da’awati wal-Jihad, more commonly known as Boko Haram.

Boko Haram, which means “Western education is forbidden,” is a Nigeria-based terrorist organization that seeks to overthrow the current Nigerian government and replace it with a regime based on Islamic law.

The group has existed in various forms since the late 1990s. There are reported communications, training, and weapons links between Boko Haram, al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), al-Shabaab, and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which may strengthen Boko Haram’s capacity to conduct terrorist attacks.

Shekau was previously the group’s second-in-command. In July 2010, Shekau publicly claimed leadership of Boko Haram and threatened to attack Western interests in Nigeria.

Later that month, Shekau issued a second statement expressing solidarity with al-Qaida and threatening the United States. Under Shekau’s leadership, Boko Haram’s operational capabilities grew.

The group set off its first vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) in June 2011, and has increasingly utilized IEDs in attacks against soft targets.

Boko Haram’s August 26, 2011 vehicle-bomb attack on the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria marked the group’s first lethal operation against Western interests. At least 23 people were killed, and 80 more were injured, in the attack. A purported Boko Haram spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack and promised future targeting of U.S. and Nigerian government interests.

On May 1, 2012, less than one week after the group bombed a Nigerian newspaper building in Abuja, Boko Haram issued a video statement threatening more attacks on local and international news outlets, including the Voice of America and Sahara Reporters, a New York-based media service.

Under Shekau’s leadership Boko Haram has continually targeted young children. On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped close to 300 girls from their school in northern Nigeria. In a video message released three weeks later, Shekau claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, calling the girls slaves and threatening to sell them in the market.

On June 21, 2012, the U.S. Department of State designated Shekau a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224, and placed a $7 million bounty on him.

However, an intelligence report emerged on Thursday that the Boko Haram leader reportedly died following alleged invasion of the terror group’s stronghold in the Sambisa forest area by a column of ISWAP fighters.

ISWAP, which had broken away from the Shekau-led Boko Haram faction in 2016 after pledging allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS), raided the group’s hideout using multiple gun trucks.

Shekau’s enclave was tracked down by ISWAP using its forces based in the Timbuktu Triangle. His fighters were killed in the process, followed by a long gunfire exchange between the invading group and Shekau’s bodyguards, according to intelligence reports.

It was gathered that after his bodyguards were subdued, Shekau surrendered and engaged in an hours-long meeting with the ISWAP fighters.

During the parley, he was asked to voluntarily relinquish power and order his fighters in other areas to declare bai’a (allegiance) to ISWAP’s authority. They had expected Shekau to issue a statement.

Sources within the insurgency, however, said that Shekau who secretly had a suicide vest on eventually blew himself up alongside everyone present during the negotiations.

The identities of the people within ISWAP’s leadership who lost their lives to the explosion remain unclear.

TNG reports Shekau had been the leader of Boko Haram since 2009 following the death of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf. He had been rumoured to have been killed at least four times between July 2009 and August 2015.

In August 2016, the Nigerian Air Force claimed he had been “fatally wounded” by military bombardments, but the terror group released a video only a month later showing he was alive and in good health.

The Defence Headquarters could not confirm the killing of Shekau, Nigeria’s most wanted terrorist as at the time of filing this report.

Acting Director Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, said the military cannot confirm the development yet.

The DHQ had while defending repeated claims of killing of Shekau by troops, explained that ‘Shekau’ is a mere title bestowed on the leader of the group and not a name of an individual.

Meanwhile, Nigerian military has placed all Borno State Commands of the Nigerian Army and Air Force on alert, over possible movement of dislodged insurgents.

Iran is mobilising its citizens to donate a dollar each to raise $80million to be used as bounty for Donald Trump’s head.

An NBC News reporter, quoted an unidentified organizer for the funeral procession for Gen Qassem Soleimani, as calling on all Iranians to donate $1 each ‘in order to gather an $80million bounty on President Trump’s head’.

He spoke during a funeral procession for General Qassem Soliemani in Mashad.

‘We can attack the White House itself, we can respond to them on the American soil. We have the power, and God willing we will respond in an appropriate time,’ the organiser said, according to the Iranian Labour News Agency.

‘When someone declares war do you want to respond to the bullets with flowers? They will shoot you in the head,’ he added.

Abutorabi’s threat was made during an open session of parliament in Tehran, Iran, on Sunday, and just days after Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani, the architect of Tehran’s overseas clandestine and military operations as head of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force, was killed on Friday in a US drone strike on his convoy at Baghdad airport.

Following massive funeral marches in Iraq, Soleimani’s body was flown to the city of Ahvaz in southwest Iran on Sunday.
