Liverpool edge Bournemouth in 6-goal EPL opener

Liverpool opened their Premier League title defence with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in an emotional night at Anfield on Friday.

The match began with a poignant tribute to late forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, with fans observing a heartfelt 20th-minute applause.

New signing Hugo Ekitike marked his debut in style, firing home in the 37th minute after a swift attacking move involving Dominik Szoboszlai.

Shortly after the restart, Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s advantage, finishing neatly from Ekitike’s precise pass to make it 2-0.

Bournemouth refused to fold, and Antoine Semenyo reduced the deficit in the 64th minute with a cool finish from a counterattack.

Twelve minutes later, Semenyo struck again, weaving through Liverpool’s defence before driving a powerful shot past Alisson to level the match.

Liverpool responded late, with substitute Federico Chiesa volleying in from close range in the 88th minute to restore their lead.

In stoppage time, Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a fierce strike, extending his record as the Premier League’s top scorer on opening days.

The evening was briefly marred by an incident in which Semenyo reported racial abuse from the stands, prompting officials to pause the match.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his team’s resilience, highlighting Ekitike’s impact and the collective spirit in honouring Jota’s memory.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola commended Semenyo’s performance but admitted defensive lapses proved costly in the closing stages.

The win ensures Liverpool start their campaign with momentum, combining attacking flair with emotional resolve in a fixture that will be long remembered for its intensity and sentiment.

  • EPL: Kluivert’s hat-trick end Newcastle’s winning run

    EPL: Kluivert’s hat-trick end Newcastle’s winning run

Justin Kluivert scored a hat-trick as Bournemouth claimed a thoroughly deserved victory at St James’ Park to stretch their unbeaten Premier League run to 10 matches and wreck Newcastle’s own nine-match winning streak.

The Magpies were hoping to set a new club record of 10 straight victories in all competitions, but struggled to replicate the form that had them tipped as title challengers.

Bournemouth made the much brighter start and took a deserved sixth-minute lead when Kluivert coolly steered Antoine Semenyo’s cutback into the far corner.

Newcastle equalised with their first real opportunity as Bruno Guimaraes rose highest to nod Lewis Hall’s 25th-minute corner past Kepa Arrizabalaga, who failed to keep the header out despite getting a hand to the ball.

But the Cherries remained on top and led again a minute before the break, courtesy of another composed Kluivert finish, which came after Guimaraes had lost possession just outside his own box.

The visitors thought they had made it 3-1 when Dango Ouattara prodded home from close range shortly after the hour mark, but the video assistant referee (VAR) spotted that Guimaraes’ clearance had gone out of play moments earlier and a corner was awarded instead.

David Brooks was also denied by a sprawling Martin Dubravka save, but Kluivert completed his treble – his second of the season after a hat-trick of penalties against Wolves in November – with a spectacular drive into the far corner following a poor Anthony Gordon pass.

Milos Kerkez rubbed more salt into Newcastle’s wounds in added time, sending a fierce left-footed drive into the far corner to the delight of the Cherries’ 1,700 travelling fans.

Bournemouth are now just one point behind the fourth-placed Magpies in the table and will end the day in sixth if Aston Villa fail to beat Arsenal in Saturday’s late game.

  • Manchester United slump to heavy Bournemouth loss

Manchester United slump to heavy Bournemouth loss

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United staggered into Christmas on the back of a chastening 3-0 Premier League loss at home to Bournemouth on Sunday.

A year on from securing their first victory at Old Trafford, Andoni Iraola’s impressive Cherries triumphed by the same scoreline as they inflicted the biggest blow of the Portuguese head coach’s short reign.

Dean Huijsen became the latest player to capitalise on United’s lax set-piece defending to score the opener.

Justin Kluivert penalty and Antoine Semenyo strike sealed a stunning win that brought boos from the home fans at full-time.

The result leaves the Red Devils marooned in 13th and marked an alarming drop in performance and spirit from last Sunday’s 2-1 derby win at Manchester City. Meanwhile, Bournemouth soared to fifth.

  • Manchester City suffer shock defeat at Bournemouth

Manchester City suffer shock defeat at Bournemouth

Manchester City suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday that ended their 32-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson scored for the Cherries who claimed their first ever win over the visitors.

The result dropped City — who had not lost in the league since a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Dec. 6 to second with 23 points after 10 matches, two points behind Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth climbed to eighth on 15 points.

“We knew we couldn’t match the intensity,” City manager Pep Guardiola told the BBC. We’ve talked about it. It was an open game. We had chances at the end but I congratulate Bournemouth for the victory.”

Bournemouth were rewarded for their strong start with Semenyo’s ninth-minute goal.

Milos Kerkez superbly worked the ball up the left side to the byline before sending a low cross to Semenyo, who turned and beat goalkeeper Ederson.

Evanilson doubled the lead in the 64th when he latched onto Kerkez’s cross and slotted home.

City, who have been struggling with injuries to key players, made it a nervy finish after pulling a goal back in the 82nd minute when Josko Gvardiol leapt to meet Ilkay Gundogan’s cross, his looping header pushed in off the bar by keeper Mark Travers.

That came two minutes after City’s scoring machine Erling Haaland had his side’s first shot on target and the visitors kept the pressure on Travers, who had had little to do up to that point, and Bournemouth’s defence in the dying minutes.

Travers made a terrific save in added time to help secure Bournemouth’s win when he stopped Haaland’s header from close range. The striker then fired his own rebound off the post.

City have been hampered by a long list of injuries, although winger Jeremy Doku made a surprise return and the second-half substitute instantly made his presence felt.

Neither captain Kyle Walker nor key midfielder Kevin de Bruyne were expected to play either but the former started and the latter returned to the bench where he stayed.

Phil Foden also had a decent chance for City but dragged his shot wide of the net in the second half.

Haaland went down after a challenge from Lewis Cook just before the hour but VAR determined it was a fair tackle.

The Norwegian was on the ground for several minutes receiving treatment before continuing but could not find the net.

It was the second consecutive home victory for the south-coast side, who also stunned title hopefuls Arsenal 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium two weeks ago.

“It feels amazing,” forward Semenyo said. “The best team in the world. We made it tough for them and everyone is buzzing with the result. A win is a win. It doesn’t matter if it is one goal or three, we deserved it.

“We have belief,” added the 24-year-old. “We train hard every day and take it onto the pitch. Everyone is going to write us off but we know what we can do.”

    Bournemouth keeper discusses Havertz penalty

Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers echoed the despair of many regarding a decision that went against his team.

The Cherries were taking on Arsenal in the Premier League, with the Gunners earning a penalty that appeared fortuitous.

Replays showed Kai Havertz engineer contact to make it appear as tough Travers had tripped him.

After the 3-0 loss, Travers said: “It was a massive game for Arsenal, they are trying to win the league and football’s a game of opinions – I’m sure there will be loads of them flying around on social media about a couple of decisions here.

“From a goalkeeper’s perspective, I was just trying to come out and make a save – I wasn’t thinking about Havertz dangling out a leg, I was just trying to make myself big.

“Obviously he touches it past me and dangles his trailing foot there. The ref’s decision is frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it now.

“I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do – just stand there so he can hit it first time so it goes in? I know once the ref’s made the decision it’s difficult to reverse it, but it just felt like he’s left a trailing leg in to catch my foot.

“My leg doesn’t come off the ground – I’ve just tried to stay low, make myself big and it looks a bit unnatural to leave your foot that low when you are trying to run forwards.

“My instinct was only to make a save, not to take Havertz down. It’s tough, but I don’t want to say too much and get myself in trouble.”

Havertz on Bournemouth win: Arteta taught me so many things

Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz was delighted with their 3-0 win against Bournemouth in today’s early kickoff.

Havertz won a penalty converted by Bukayo Saka, with Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard also scoring.

“It was a tough game, we had lots of chances in the first half but we didn’t manage to score them,” said Havertz. “They are a good team, fair play to them. In the end, we are happy with the three points and three goals too.

“I haven’t seen the replay but I think he touches me (for the penalty).

“I felt the contact and went down. For me it’s a penalty. I said to the goalkeeper ‘you touched me’.”

He continued: “I just enjoy it on the pitch right now. It’s so nice. I have so many good players behind me and I really enjoy the number nine role.

“We have two more games to play and we are going to give everything. We’ll enjoy those games and see how it goes.

“I enjoy every second. He [Mikel Arteta] taught me so many things, especially at the start when it was tough for me. I’m so glad I was here. Things were hard at a the start but everyone stuck by me.

“I work hard but for me it’s not easy to go into a new team. Sometimes I’m a shy guy.

“To go into a new team with a new manager and different players then it can be tough. I came from Chelsea and that didn’t make it easy too. The manager has helped a lot and the players. The fans have been unbelievable.

“I needed maybe to change my game a bit. When I came form Germany I realised it’s not easy to survive in this league. I had to adapt and I’ve done it well. I enjoy contact with my opponents and aerial duels too.”

On Bukayo Saka, he added: “He’s unbelievable and shows it every week.

    “I think he’s 21 or 22 and I’ve never seen a player like this.

“England are very lucky. He’s hungry every day and if you see him in training he’s special.”

  • EPL: Arsenal not relenting on title race, thrash Bournemouth 3-0 at the Emirate stadium

EPL: Arsenal not relenting on title race, thrash Bournemouth 3-0 at the Emirate stadium

Arsenal  Football club on  Saturday opened a four point gap on the top of the log after recording an emphatic 3-0 victory over visitors, Bournemouth.

Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice all registered their names on the score sheet to give the Gunners all three points.

Saka opened the scoring from the penalty spot when Kai Havertz was adjudged to have been fouled in the box by Mark Travers, although the German initiated the contact.

Trossard doubled the lead with a lovely finish before the Cherries saw Antonie Semenyo’s goal disallowed for a soft foul on David Raya

Declan Rice then wrapped it up with a fine low strike in stoppage time.

The result meant that Arsenal now have  83 points, four more than City who host Wolves in Saturday’s late kick-off.

City still have a game in hand.

  • Foden’s goal secures all maximum points as Manchester City pip Bournemouth 1-0 at Vitality stadium

Foden’s goal secures all maximum points as Manchester City pip Bournemouth 1-0 at Vitality stadium

English Premier defending champions, Manchester City on Saturday evening secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory at the Vitality stadium  as Phil Foden’s first-half goal moved them one point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

All effort by Bournemouth players to score in the thrilling encounter met a brick wall.

Foden scored after receiving a pass in the 18 yard box to put the visitors in the lead in the 24th minute of the encounter and the goal proved highly decisive.

The hosts looked capable of an equaliser after the break when Marcus Tavernier had two decent opportunities in quick succession and Enes Unal headed just wide at the death.

City have 59 points from 26 games with Liverpool, who play Chelsea in the League Cup final on Sunday, on 60.

Despite dominating possession, they were severely tested at the Vitality Stadium and their relief at the final whistle was palpable as they held on to turn up the heat on Liverpool.

Guardiola’s side lacked their usual fluency but still stretched their unbeaten league run to 11 games with a second successive 1-0 victory, after a midweek win over Brentford.

“The players surprise me every time, the character, always competitive when they are tired,” Guardiola said.

“Winning 0-5 is not a reality. Hopefully we can have a week off soon to rest the legs.”

Erling Haaland still looked short of his best form after returning from injury and missed an early opportunity when he fired wide with the sort opportunity he usually converts.

But Manchester City have plenty of other match-winners, not least Foden who once again displayed his increasingly influential role in the team as he poached his ninth league goal of the season.

Haaland showed great strength to roll his marker and get a shot off that home keeper Neto did well to keep out but the ball fell to Foden who coolly turned in the rebound.

Shortly before that, Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson was forced into a save from Milos Kerkez’s dipping effort.

Manchester City could not build on their lead after the break, however, and Bournemouth, roared on by a vociferous home crowd, pinned them back.

The results leaves the race for the title a three horse race amongst Liverpool, Arsenal and City.

  • EPL: Solanke wins historic Player of the Month award

EPL: Solanke wins historic Player of the Month award

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke has been voted December 2023’s EA SPORTS Player of the Month, becoming the club’s first player to win the award.

Solanke wins the prize for the first time in his career after scoring a Premier League-high six goals in December to move just two behind Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah in the race to be this season’s top scorer.

The 26-year-old netted in a 2-2 draw with high-flying Aston Villa, recorded his first career hat-trick to inspire a 3-2 turnaround win at Nottingham Forest, and scored in 3-0 victories over both Manchester United and Fulham.

His form helped Bournemouth win four and draw one of their six December matches to climb to within three points of the top half of the table.

Solanke is only the fourth Bournemouth player or manager to win a Premier League monthly award. Eddie Howe won the Barclays Manager of the Month three times between 2017 and 2018, while Charlie Daniels and Jermain Defoe won the Goal of the Month prize in August and December 2017 respectively.

Solanke topped an eight-man shortlist after votes on the EA SPORTS website were combined with those of a panel of football experts.

  • EPL: Bournemouth thrash Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford

EPL: Bournemouth thrash Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford

Manchester United on Saturday afternoon suffered a heavy loss 3-0 at home to Bournemouth just three days after a huge Chelsea win at the same venue.

Dominic Solanke put the visitors in front inside five minutes and, while United initially threatened an immediate response, the Cherries were a constant threat on the counter.

James Tavernier had a goal ruled out for the visitors, while Solanke was denied a second by the post as United repeatedly gave the ball away.

Philip Billing rose highest at the back post and towered over Luke Shaw as he nodded in a second of the afternoon, as the Red Devils were again cut open too easily.

And Marcos Senesi completed the rout late on in the  68th minute of the second half putting Erik ten Hag under pressure once again.

But they never looked like doing so on a miserable afternoon for Ten Hag and his players, the club lurching swiftly back into crisis mode with a dismal performance that was greeted with a chorus of boos from those who stayed to hear the final whistle.

An impressive midweek win over Chelsea had seemingly lifted the mood at Old Trafford, and meant United had the chance to draw level on points with rivals Manchester City with victory over the Cherries.

However, reverse was the case as Bournemouth against all odds snatched victory at the expense of the Reds at Old Trafford.
