EPL: Bournemouth win at Southampton for first time

Bournemouth survived a second-half fightback to secure a first ever victory at Southampton and move into third place in the Premier League before the weekend’s games.

Eddie Howe’s side produced a superb first-half display to establish a two-goal lead as Nathan Ake headed in Diego Rico’s corner in the 10th minute and Harry Wilson’s sweeping finish from Phillip Billing’s pass crowned a superb move.

The Cherries also had a goal from Joshua King ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee as they were in complete control for the first 45 minutes.

Southampton snatched at a lifeline when James Ward-Prowse scored from the spot eight minutes after the break following Steve Cook’s clumsy challenge on Che Adams.

Bournemouth felt they had a credible penalty claim ignored by VAR when Cedric Soares tangled with King but they came through in relative comfort and wrapped up the win with virtually the last kick of the game when a misunderstanding between Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn and Jan Bednarek left Callum Wilson with an open goal.

EPL: Fulham beat Bournemouth for first away win of season

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s second-half penalty spoiled Eddie Howe’s 500th game as a manager as already relegated Fulham won their first away game of the season at Bournemouth.

Serbia international Mitrovic won the penalty after being fouled by Cherries substitute Jack Simpson and sent home goalkeeper Artur Boruc the wrong way as he rolled his spot-kick into the bottom-left corner.

It gave the Cottagers, who won against Everton last weekend, their first back-to-back Premier League victories since April 2014.

The result leaves Bournemouth in 12th while Fulham remain second bottom of the Premier League.

EPL: Burnley defeat Bournemouth to boost survival hopes

Burnley took a huge step towards securing their top-flight status after coming from behind to beat Bournemouth and move eight points clear of the bottom three.

The Clarets, who began the day in 17th place, made the worst possible start at Vitality Stadium, Ashley Barnes sending a header into his own net under pressure from Nathan Ake.

But Sean Dyche’s side responded brilliantly, scoring twice in as many first-half minutes to turn the game on its head.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic misjudged Ashley Westwood’s corner, allowing Chris Wood to nod into an empty net from point-blank range.

The turnaround was complete two minutes later when Chris Mepham’s poor clearance landed at the feet of Westwood, who finished with aplomb.

Barnes atoned for his first-half own goal to give the visitors breathing space in the second half, slotting home Wood’s cut-back to put clear daylight between Dyche’s team and the relegation zone.

EPL: Four star Bournemouth thrash Chelsea

Two goals and an assist by Joshua King saw Bournemouth put further pressure on Chelsea’s bid for Champions League qualification at Vitality Stadium.

King scored either side of a composed David Brooks finish, before Charlie Daniels added a fourth as the Cherries condemned the visitors to a second consecutive league defeat.

Bournemouth were fortunate to be level at the interval as veteran goalkeeper Artur Boruc produced five impressive saves to deny a Chelsea side that failed to penetrate their hosts’ defence despite 70% of possession.

But within a minute of the second half starting, Bournemouth took the lead as King arrived late in the Chelsea box to smash Brooks’ cut-back past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The duo combined again for the second as King lofted the ball over a scrambling Chelsea defence for Brooks to latch on to and fire into the bottom corner.

The influential Welshman, 21, hobbled off in the second half, but King added a third with the final touch of a flowing Bournemouth move with a right-footed finish from close range.

Substitute Daniels produced the finishing touch within a minute of being on the pitch with a stooping header in injury time.

A second consecutive league win for Bournemouth sees the Cherries move up to 10th in the table, while Chelsea drop to fifth by virtue of scoring fewer goals than Arsenal.

EPL: Everton edge to hard-fought win over Bournemouth

Two second-half goals gave Everton a victory over Bournemouth that lifted them into the top half of the Premier League table.

Kurt Zouma powerfully headed in his first goal for the club from Lucas Digne’s cross following a corner in the 61st minute, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin added the second in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Everton had been outplayed in the opening 30 minutes but Bournemouth failed to capitalise on their bright start.

David Brooks hit the post when through one-on-one with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and had a strong penalty appeal turned down early on, while Joshua King also had a good chance saved.

Everton, who had not won any of their previous four home league matches, failed to have a first-half shot on target for the second successive league game at Goodison Park.

They improved after the break, with Richarlison having a shot cleared off the line by Nathan Ake and coming close with a header from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross.

While Everton climb to 10th, Bournemouth stay 12th despite now having lost six league away games in a row.

Transfer news: Bournemouth sign Liverpool’s striker for £19m

Bournemouth have signed England striker Dominic Solanke from Liverpool for £19m.

Solanke, 21, had been due to join Crystal Palace on loan earlier this week but the deal fell through because of fitness concerns.

Bournemouth are about to allow forward Jermain Defoe to join Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

It is understood Solanke cannot move to the Cherries on loan under Premier League regulations.

Bournemouth have also signed Reds right-back Nathaniel Clyne on loan until the end of the season.

“The club is going somewhere – it’s a good club to be at, especially for someone of my age,” said Solanke.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe said he was “really excited” about working with Solanke.

“Dominic is technically gifted, very athletic and has the physical profile that will give us something different in our front line,” said Howe.

Solanke, a former England youth international who has one senior cap against Brazil in 2017, joined Liverpool from Chelsea in 2017 after his contract at Stamford Bridge ended.

The two clubs eventually came to an agreement over the fee, which had been due to be set by a tribunal.

He did not make a first-team appearance for the Premier League leaders this season and was ruled out of recent matches because of a muscle problem.

The Under-20 World Cup winner made 21 appearances last season, 16 of which were from the bench, scoring one goal.

He never made a senior league appearance in three years at Chelsea, spending the 2015-16 season on loan at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, where he scored seven goals in 25 Eredivisie appearances.

Salah scores hat-trick as Liverpool thrash Bournemouth

Mohamed Salah scored his first hat-trick since March to help Liverpool to an emphatic victory over Bournemouth and send Jurgen Klopp’s side above Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Salah was in an offside position when Roberto Firmino hit a 30-yard shot that home keeper Asmir Begovic carelessly pushed out in the direction of the Egypt forward.

Salah’s eighth top-flight goal of the season was allowed to stand by the officials to break the deadlock in a game the visitors dominated for long spells.

There was nothing fortuitous about the Liverpool forward’s second though, a composed finish after driving at the Bournemouth defence, while Steve Cook back-heeled the ball into his own net while attempting a clearance to make it 3-0.

Salah then completed his hat-trick after rounding Begovic, cutting back to beat the Bournemouth keeper for a second time, and poking the ball past Nathan Ake on the line.

Having taken 45 points from the last 51 on offer, Liverpool are now unbeaten in 17 league games in a run stretching back to last season.

After a fifth straight league win, Klopp’s side are one point clear of City, but the reigning champions will return to the summit if they avoid defeat at fourth-placed Chelsea later on Saturday.

  • Man City maintain unbeaten run to stay top of Premier League

Man City maintain unbeaten run to stay top of Premier League

Unbeaten Manchester City had to work hard to see off a determined Bournemouth side before Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan secured the win that sends them five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

City’s victory maintains their 100% home record in the league this season, with eight wins out of eight, but this latest triumph was not as straightforward as the scoreline might suggest.

All seemed to be going to plan for Pep Guardiola’s side when Bernardo Silva smashed them ahead early on, with the Portuguese midfielder following up after Asmir Begovic had denied Leroy Sane.

But the home side, with David Silva on the bench and top scorer Sergio Aguero absent altogether after he complained of a muscle discomfort, relaxed a little too much before half-time and were deservedly punished.

To the displeasure of the home fans, the Cherries were given far too much time and space to build outside the box and Simon Francis swung in a perfect cross for Callum Wilson to rise and head home.

Bournemouth threatened again after half-time when King’s looping cross almost dropped in at the far post, while City looked surprisingly short of urgency or inspiration.

It was Sterling who supplied the spark they were missing, to continue his remarkable run of scoring against the Cherries.

The England forward followed up after Begovic could only parry Danilo’s low shot and Nathan Ake failed to clear, firing into the roof of the net for his 10th goal in seven games against the Cherries.

Bournemouth, looking to avoid a fourth successive defeat, did not lie down and some dangerous balls into the box ensured some nervous moments for the Etihad faithful.

It took Gundogan’s close-range finish to make sure of the points with 11 minutes remaining, with the impressive Sane providing the assist with a precise pull-back.

  • EPL: Why Ozil did not feature against Bournemouth – Emery

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth was too demanding for Mesut Ozil, which fueled speculations of poor relationship between the manager and the playmaker.

The 30-year-old German World Cup-winning midfielder had played in the Gunners’ previous three matches — all draws — but Emery decided his style did not fit with Bournemouth’s robust approach.

“We thought ‘how we can do better in the match’, a very demanding match with physicality and intensity,” Emery said following the 2-1 win for Arsenal, when asked why Ozil had not started.

“Every player is important but today we tried with three centre-backs and it was another possibility for us to improve and find our best performance as a team.”

Ozil, whose place in the team for Sunday’s North London derby with Tottenham could now be in doubt, did not even warm up for the match.

“It depends on how the match is going,” said Emery, replying to a question on why Ozil had not warmed up.

“I decided on another option. We knew this was a difficult stadium, a difficult team. Seventeen matches we haven’t lost but the last three we drew. That is not enough for us.”

Emery and Ozil have had a fractious relationship since the Spaniard replaced Arsene Wenger at the end of last season.

Ozil missed the 3-1 win over West Ham in August, when it was reported he and Emery had argued at the training ground but the Arsenal boss said the player had been too ill to train.

Ozil also threw a tantrum at being substituted in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace — in which he captained the side in the absence of the injured Petr Cech — in late October.

He stomped past Emery and hurled his gloves to the turf in disgust before taking a seat on the bench.

Emery, though, did not take umbrage publicly, stating “I like the players like him who show the character when we are not playing well”.

  • EPL: Bournemouth fifth after hitting four at Watford

EPL: Bournemouth fifth after hitting four at Watford

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe says his team “still have room to improve” after they humbled a poor Watford side to move up to fifth in the Premier League.

David Brooks opened the scoring for the Cherries before Joshua King converted from the spot after being brought down by Christian Kabasele, who was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The Norwegian forward then added a third for Bournemouth in first-half injury time, and Callum Wilson wrapped up the win early in the second half.
The victory was Bournemouth’s biggest away win in the Premier League.
“It wasn’t perfect,” Howe told BBC Sport. “I’m pleased but we have room to improve and grow from today. Watford made it difficult, even with 10 [men], but we were professional.
“It’s a great start. It is so early it is difficult to make predictions. All we can do is work and try to achieve what our limit is.”
Watford looked confident in the early stages, with their best chances falling to Will Hughes, who drew a good save from Asmir Begovic with a shot from the edge of the area.
However, once Kabasele had seen red after 32 minutes, they were never able to find a foothold in the game and Bournemouth played through their lines with ease.
The Cherries had chances to further their advantage in the second half. King fired straight at Ben Foster when crossing may have been the better option, and Ryan Fraser was tackled with King and Wilson in space.
But Eddie Howe’s team were unable to add to their four-goal lead, to the relief of the home crowd, who will not remember Vicarage Road’s 100th Premier League fixture fondly.
