Bournemouth banking on past experiences to beat Chelsea – Howe

Manager Eddie Howe says Bournemouth will take inspiration from last season’s matches against Chelsea as they try to beat the London outfit in the Premier League on Saturday to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign,.

Bournemouth narrowly lost their home league match against Chelsea as well as a League Cup encounter between the two sides but secured a shock 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge in January.

Howe said Chelsea are likely to be a completely different threat under new manager Maurizio Sarri, but he is confident that Bournemouth will be motivated by previous meetings between the two sides.

“Tactically, I thought we had a really good battle against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea team last year,” Howe told a news conference. “But this is going to be a totally different game.

“A new season, new players, a new manager so we need to draw on the past experience and use it as a confidence-builder.

“There are no guarantees that we are going to perform it is up to us that we do.”

Bournemouth have drawn two and won one of their three league games so far and beat MK Dons in the League Cup on Tuesday, but Howe knows that continuing that streak will not be easy.

“It’s been good so far. I was really pleased to progress midweek in the Carabao (League) Cup that was a really good step for us.

“It backs up our good early league form. Of course now, the challenge gets harder.

“We go to Chelsea and we know how difficult the game is going to be, but we are really keen to keep the momentum from what has been a very positive beginning.

They are really well coached and managed, so we are expecting a tough game,” Howe added

Bournemouth will be boosted by fullback Diego Rico’s return from suspension while new arrival Jefferson Lerma is also available to play against Chelsea.

EPL: Howe wants Bournemouth to stay grounded after strong start

Bournemouth have offered a glimpse of their potential with two victories but cannot let their strong start lead to complacency, manager Eddie Howe says.

Bournemouth beat promoted Cardiff City 2-0 in their season opener and followed it up with a 2-1 win at West Ham United last weekend to maintain their perfect record.

“I think we’ve shown in the two games some good signs of what the team could be, glimpses of what the future may hold.

“But we’ve still got to deliver that and we know in the Premier League how difficult that can be,” Howe told reporters.

The south coast club signed midfielder Jefferson Lerma in the close season but the Colombian has yet to appear for the club after playing at the World Cup in Russia.

Lerma could make his debut at the weekend or in the League Cup tie against MK Dons next week.

“There are players that we haven’t seen yet who I think can really contribute to the season, I think that’s really exciting for everybody,” Howe added.

“The strength in depth we have although not high on numbers is high on quality so I’m excited about the next week.

“We’ve got two games and a good opportunity to see everyone play,” Howe added.

  • EPL: Bournemouth come from behind to win at West Ham

Bournemouth scored twice in six second-half minutes to come from behind and beat West Ham at London Stadium.

The Hammers, beaten 4-0 at Liverpool last Sunday, took the lead when Marko Arnautovic converted a penalty after Javier Hernandez had been clipped by Nathan Ake.

But Callum Wilson equalised with a fine individual goal as he ran with the ball from near the halfway line and slotted past Lukasz Fabianski.

EPL: Bournemouth edge out newly-promoted Cardiff, Watford beat Brighton

Bournemouth spoiled Cardiff City’s Premier League return with a hard-earned 2-0 victory.

The technically superior hosts were quick to dominate possession, pinning their opponents back in their own half for long periods and deservedly taking the lead when Ryan Fraser fired in from close range.

Bournemouth were then awarded a penalty when Callum Wilson was brought down after a tangle with Bruno Ecuele Manga, but the forward’s low spot kick was well saved by Neil Etheridge.

Cardiff roused themselves in the second half with a flurry of chances from set pieces – the best seeing Sean Morrison thwarted a yard out by Asmir Begovic.

But Wilson struck in added time to give Bournemouth a first opening day win since they were promoted to the top flight in 2015.

There was a sense of relief as the unseasonably heavy rain descended on the Vitality Stadium, where the hosts had looked set for a routine victory before they were unsettled by Cardiff’s second-half resurgence.

For the visitors, despite competing with the tenacity expected from a Neil Warnock side, this was a harsh reminder of the chasm in quality between the Championship and the Premier League.

Roberto Pereyra scored both goals as Watford opened the new Premier League season with a comfortable win over Brighton at Vicarage Road.

The 27-year-old Argentine opened the scoring with a sweet volley 10 minutes before the break, after he was left unmarked from a Jose Holebas corner.

Shortly after half-time the former Juventus man got his second after driving into the area and curling the ball beyond a helpless Mat Ryan from a tight angle.

The Seagulls, who finished last season a point and a place behind Watford in 15th, bought on club record signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh and fellow summer signing Yves Bissouma, but Hornets goalkeeper Ben Foster was rarely troubled.

The visitors – hampered by the loss of captain Bruno, who was forced off early on by what appeared to be a hamstring injury – failed to muster a single effort on target and Watford were worthy winners.

  • Comeback win at Bournemouth was ‘perfect response’ – Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino hailed his side’s “perfect response” to their Champions League upset after they came from behind at Bournemouth to go third in the Premier League.

Spurs, who lost Harry Kane to a first-half ankle injury, recovered from their last-16 defeat by Juventus on Wednesday, to win convincingly through Son Heung-min’s double and Serge Aurier’s late far-post header.

Dele Alli had earlier levelled for the visitors after Junior Stanislas gave Bournemouth a seventh-minute lead.

“The answer today was perfect after Wednesday,” said the Spurs boss. “I am so pleased – the reaction was important for the team.

“They [Bournemouth] played at a high tempo which was difficult. We conceded an early goal but it was a massive three points for us.

“There is still a lot of work to do, still a lot of things can happen with eight games to go. Big sides are fighting with us to take a position in the top four.”

Bournemouth, who remain 12th, thought they had rescued a point via Callum Wilson’s 84th-minute strike but referee Mike Dean disallowed it for a shove on Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, before the visitors scored their two late goals.

Alli gave Tottenham fans a scare when he was replaced late on, as did left-back Danny Rose, who was making his first top-flight appearance of the year, but both were fatigued rather than injured.

It was Pochettino’s 150th league win as a manager but a rare recent defeat for his counterpart Eddie Howe, whose side had been beaten just once in their past 10 league fixtures – only Tottenham losing fewer in that period.

  • BOU 2-1 ARS: Bournemouth stun Gunners

Bournemouth came from behind to register a 2-1 win over Arsenal, who were without Alexis Sanchez, at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

There was a surprise omission from the the Gunners squad as Sanchez was left out amid reports of a move to Manchester United.

The Gunners got off to a positive and hit the upright in the opening 10 minutes through Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ powerful strike.

The visitors squandered another chance in the 35th minute when Danny Welbeck broke through on goal only to fire straight Asmir Begovic.

That proved to be the final chance of the half as Arsenal shot-stopper Petr Cech endured a quiet opening 45 minutes.

Seven minutes into the second half, Arsenal took the lead as Hector Bellerin found the back of the net with a close range finish although Begovic could have done better.

Bournemouth restored parity on 70 minutes as Callum Wilson turned home Ryan Fraser’s cross to draw the hosts level, 1-1.

Five minutes later, the Cherries took the lead courtesy of a powerful low strike from Jordon Ibe, 2-1.

Arsene Wenger threw on Theo Walcott in place of Alex Iwobi for the final 15 minutes as they pushed for an equaliser.

However, the Gunners struggled to carve out a clear cut opening in the closing stages as the Cherries held on for a vital win to boost their survival hopes.

  • Austin rescues Southampton at Bournemouth

    Austin rescues Southampton at Bournemouth

Charlie Austin continued his fine goalscoring form as he salvaged a 1-1 draw for Southampton at south-coast rivals Bournemouth.

The Saints frontman swept home his third goal in two starts on 61 minutes, cancelling out Ryan Fraser’s 42nd-minute opener for the Cherries, who felt aggrieved not to win a penalty after Sofiane Boufal’s challenge on Adam Smith.

Austin spurned a glorious chance to win the game 10 minutes from time, as too did Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake, but there was to be no winner as both sides had to settle for a point.

    Bournemouth: Begovic (7), Smith (7), Francis (6), Ake (7), Daniels (6), L. Cook (6), Surman (6), Stanislas (5), Fraser (7), King (6), Defoe (5).

    Subs: Afobe (5), Wilson (5), Ibe (5).

    Southampton: Forster (8), Pied (6), Hoedt (6), Van Dijk (7), Bertrand (9), Davis (6), Romeu (6), Ward-Prowse (5), Tadic (6), Boufal (6), Austin (8).

    Subs: Lemina (5), Gabbiadini (5), Redmond (6).

Man of the Match: Ryan Bertrand.

Virgil van Dijk nearly capped Southampton’s bright start with the opener on 12 minutes, but his header curled agonisingly wide.

Bournemouth awoke from their slumber on 20 minutes as Lewis Cook’s fierce drive deflected off Jermain Defoe and drew a stunning point-blank save from Fraser Forster, who was on hand to thwart Ake’s header a minute later.

Bournemouth had strong appeals for a penalty turned away on the half-hour mark when Boufal lunged in on Smith, but referee Jon Moss booked Smith for simulation and Defoe for his protests.

In an almost retaliatory move, Charlie Daniels took matters into his own hands, unleashing a fierce drive which came within inches of taking the lead on 39 minutes.

The breakthrough finally came three minutes later as Josh King caught Wesley Hoedt in possession, shipped the ball out to Fraser, and he stroked the ball beyond Forster.

After Boufal spurned a glorious chance to haul Saints level before the break, the visitors took control in the second period and finally equalised as Austin fired substitute Nathan Redmond’s low cross home at the near post.
