He had alot of negative energy – Bovi Speaks on relationship with his late father

Foremost Nigerian comedian, Bovi, has stated that negative energy is a pattern in his family.

Bovi made this known while discussing his frosty relationship with his late father, who passed away in February 2025.

Speaking during the inaugural live edition of the ‘WithChude’ podcast, the comedian noted that the only thing his father had was the negativity he inherited from him.

While narrating how he detached himself from his father to put a stop to the family trend that seemed like a curse, he explained that he forgave his father before his death.

He said, “What made the relationship with my late father difficult is what they call family patterns or what the church calls ‘generational curses’.

“My father gave me what he had, and what he had was a lot of negative energy. That was given to him as well. I have chosen to be the stop.

“When I used to tell that story, I was used to playing the victim, talking about the loveless relationship. I was speaking from a very bitter place.

“But long before he passed, I had already forgiven him. He was sick from 2021 till he passed; I and my siblings were taking care of him. And I was taking care of him with all the love. I didn’t struggle to take care of him,” Bovi said.

Bovi Ugboma is a Nigerian stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. He has organized popular stand-up comedy concerts like Bovi: Man on Fire across the globe.

Why I relocated my family abroad – Bovi

Popular stand-up comedian cum actor Bovi, in a recent episode of the ‘Uncolored’ podcast,  shared his reasons for relocating his family abroad.
He revealed that his children have been living in the UK for two years now, citing the prevalence of bullying in some Nigerian schools as a major factor in his decision.
Bovi, who attended boarding school in Nigeria himself, acknowledged that the experience made him street-smart.
However, he refused to send his own children to boarding school in Nigeria due to the bullying culture that has become accepted in the educational system.
I went to boarding school in Nigeria and it made me street-smart. So I decided that my kid needs to go boarding but not in Nigeria because the educational system has accepted bullying,” he explained.
The comedian also attributed the mass migration of Nigerians abroad to the lack of enabling environments in the country.
He cited the example of doctors leaving Nigeria, stating that while new doctors are being trained, the working conditions in the country are not conducive for them to stay.
Bovi emphasized that it’s not just about money, but also about working in an environment that values and supports professionals.
He highlighted the stark contrast between working conditions in Nigeria and those in Western countries, where doctors and other professionals can work with dignity and decent infrastructure.
If the government wants to stem the tide, they need to check what the West is doing. Why are doctors comfortable going to work in other countries? It’s not just the money. If you are passionate about something but when you get to work, there’s light and an enabling environment, you don’t get to fight to go to work or go back home,” he said.
  • Women dominate the Entertainment industry- Bovi

Women dominate the Entertainment industry- Bovi

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has claimed that women are currently the powerhouse of the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The veteran comedian, during a recent feature on TVC programme, ‘Your View’,  disclosed that women are making significant strides in the industry.

While highlighting the role of women, Bovi stated that women sometimes complain of inequality even in sectors of which they are already dominating. They spoke on Women’s opportunities and their fight for equality in the entertainment field.

He said, “Women need to understand that in areas where they are fighting for equality, sometimes, they may have conquered, but because they are used to fighting [for equality], they don’t know that they’ve won.

“You talk about the entertainment industry and how it can help women. But I observed 10 or 15 years ago that women actually control the entertainment industry. So what are we talking about?

“I’m talking as far back as from the time of Amaka Igwe. The biggest box office hit is a woman, Funke Akindele. The second biggest box office hit is also a woman, Mo Abudu. They [women] are the biggest producers. Bolanle Austin-Peters is one of the biggest producers. Jade Osibero is one of the biggest directors since Kemi Adetiba. The biggest film festival is by Chioma Ode. So what are you saying?

“We also have the likes of Omoni Oboli, Uche Jombo, Genevieve Nnaji. So you need to understand that, women are running the entertainment industry. So when I see young girls complaining about male producers demanding sex for roles, I’m like, ‘yes, it’s true. But who have you cried to? Who have you spoken to? You [women] own the industry.”

  • Knocking a kid is a violent, criminal act – Bovi calls out Catholic Priest for knocking altar boy

Knocking a kid is a violent, criminal act – Bovi calls out Catholic Priest for knocking altar boy

Veteran Nigerian comedian, Bovi has taken to social media to call out a Catholic Priest for knocking one of his altar boys.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that a video shared online showed the moment a priest officiating a wedding ceremony knocked the altar boy, assisting him for not holding the microphone close enough to the groom’s mouth well.

The video sparked outrage on social media and the priest have since apologized.

Reacting, Bovi, via his Instagram page on Friday expressed dismay at the rate at which most firms of abuse go unchecked in Nigeria.

The father and comedian noted how the Priest unprovoked, hit a defenceless child for a very flimsy reason, questioning what the Priest would have done if the boy had done something grievous.

He further pondered what the Priest could do behind closed doors if he couldn’t even control himself publicly.

The comedian avowed that knocking a child in the head unprovoked is a violent and criminal act as he questioned why the police hadn’t invited the man.

The post reads: “I’ve been trying to ignore this video like it never happened but after watching the apology video this morning, I’m more livid and miffed at the rate at which most forms of abuse go unchecked in Nigeria.

“In the poorly staged apology video, the Priest described his actions as a “normal correction” and “a minor correction.” He was even encouraged by another apology from an adult, who I couldn’t tell who he was exactly, that he would have blamed the Priest if he hadn’t done that.

“He hit a defenseless child. He humiliated that child. He harmed that child’s confidence. He hit the head of the child for a very flimsy reason. Now imagine when that child does something really wrong.

“A priest who couldn’t control himself in public. Take a moment to think about what he’s capable of doing behind closed doors. If we think this is normal behavior, then we are all abnormal.

“Knocking a kid in the head unprovoked is a violent and criminal act. @nigerianpolice why haven’t you invited this man? If you fight for one child, you will be saving very many others. We must prevent and put out small fires before we all get consumed.

“In a society where a virgin priest who preaches the teachings of Jesus uses physical harm to convey his unprocessed emotions, there is bound to be doom. We’re probably in hell already”.

Popular Nigerian Comedian and filmmaker, Basketmouth has opened up on feud with Ayo Makun, AKA AY.

Basketmouth in a Black Box interview with media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, noted that he fell out with AY because the comedian messed with loyalty.

He further explained that AY has apologized and they have made peace.

“I’d have stayed where the competition is. I still do standup comedy but not with great energy because I’m targeting all-around entertainment now. My competition is me. There’s nothing [like a feud] between AY and I.

“He came in my space; messed with loyalty by saying something to my lawyer Magnus that I told him in private. It was nothing but it was enough to cause a rift and have me put up the walls. We made peace and he apologised. I have no single problem with AY as claimed. We don’t talk.

“We made peace and he apologised,” he said.

Also, in the interview, Basketmouth played down the speculation that he fell out with AY because he took his former protégé, Bovi from him.

I did not snatch Bovi. Bovi is not a girl,” the comedian said before recounting that he met Bovi for the first time at a comedy event in Abuja, and from there, they became friends.

Asked why he is no longer close to Bovi, he said :“Hustle, everybody is hustling; Bovi stepped into a new world. He is busy, and he does not have my time. Me, I’m hustling,” Basketmouth said.

  • I can do stand-up comedy not just in Pidgin, but anywhere in the world -Bovi

I can do stand-up comedy not just in Pidgin, but anywhere in the world -Bovi

Comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma has averred that he can do stand-up comedy anywhere in the world.Bovi made this revelation as a guest on Rubbin Minds.

Expressing his thoughts on the belief that some stand-up comedians can only express their craft in Pidgin English, he said: “You cannot lump all of us in a box. I can do my stuff anywhere in the world. I have done stuffs in as far as Australia in English. But here, the truth of the matter is that there is too much juice in our Pidgin English. Pidgin English is like our Lingua Franca. There is poetry in our Pidgin English. Sometimes to connect more, you have to do it in the language that touches the heart. For us to cross over, we have to do it in a language most of the world speaks or understands. But for our market here, the money is in the Pidgin”.

Bovi also said the emergence of Instagram comedians is a welcome development in the Nigerian comedy industry.

“It’s a whole new genre on its own, the online comics. Because it is not easy. I have been doing skits more than ten years ago .Before these platforms came, we used to do skits to promote our shows. So I know how difficult it is to make one skit.

Me doing stuffs with them now is because I like to do skits, I like to act. Most importantly I had a product to promote that was why. I remembered last year or two years ago, Mr Macaroni reached out and I said I wasn’t ready. He asked why and I said I am used to doing this to promote just shows. I understand this is a market and the time would come when I would be ready for it. So that time is coming now”.

  • Comedians need to start creating mini albums- Bovi

Comedians need to start creating mini albums- Bovi

Comedian and actor, Abovi Ugboma better known as Bovi has stated that comedians need to embrace the art of creating album-like skits to sustain relevance.

The 41-year-old comedian made this known on Sunday at the virtual 8th edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NEC Live).

In his words: “Personally, I feel comedians need to start creating mini albums, which is like what TV has always been, weekly shows of 30 minutes duration as oppose to one video today and another tomorrow,” he said.

“We need to create something like an album, making 8 videos, some comedians are already doing it. Comedians should think of something like this, making 8 episodes of content, so they can have time to do other things as against you consuming your life every week.

“That is how you have a proper structure. That way in the future, a streaming platform can say we love what you do, and commission you to make weekly episodes for them.”

The seasoned entertainer also added that everyone now has a Tv station, saying the likes of tiktok and YouTube have become some sort of Tv stations for content creators.

“The skit culture is actually different. It has helped to create a new industry, in the sense that there are people who are so witty that in less than 30 seconds, they can make you laugh by what they dramatise through the skit. So, it is a win win situation for the executioner and consumers,” he said at the fireside chat.

“Now everybody has a Tv station, your YouTube is your Tv station, your Instagram and TikTok are your Tv stations. So, this is a great opportunity for people to showcase the talents they have and if it’s good the world will buy.

“To take advantage of this, you need to know your strength, you must evolve, because disruption is the order of the day. Create stuff not only for the moment but something of longevity:”
