How an executive producer ran away with my money- Bovi

In the spirit of throwbacks, TheNewsGuru brings to you an inspiring speech delivered by comedian Bovi Ugboma at Tedex Gbagada, held some months back in Lagos.

The talented comedian shares the story of how he started out in the industry serving Richard Mofe Damijo and losing money from his major TV production because his executive producer refused to pay his own share of the money.

He said: ”Fame hit me before I was even ready for it. I had no car, I had no good clothes but I refused to dwell on it. I had no girlfriend, I had nothing. I was the one physically taking the tapes of my soap opera to all the TV stations myself .

“I was seeing friends doing well, but I knew this work had to grow and reach out to people. Those days, I usually take public transportation, I decided to stop taking public transportation once it was 1.45 pm because secondary school would have closed by then and when they see me in the bus, they would start making all sorts of fun about me. After the TV programme had run for 2 years, my executive producer refused to give me my share of the money 7.4m naira, I was entitled to 40%.

“Long story short that was how that project ended. I told her that it was a dream Joseph interpreted that took him to the prison, it was another dream he interpreted that made him a Prime Minister .I started again” he reveals.

  • We never had the chance to pay her back- Bovi pens emotional tribute for deceased mum

Nigerian comedian, Bovi lost his mum January 25th, 2016 . Bovi in an emotion laden tribute posted on Instagram, narrated how he drove her to the airport 24 hours before she died, his greatest regret and how she was there for him through thick and thin. According to him, the story is too tragic to tell.

“Bovi o! It’s mummy o! She’s not breathing o”! Those where the first words that hit me when I picked up the phone call. It was 7pm, Jan 25th 2016. I was parked outside the palms, patiently waiting for my movie time before making my way into the building. But how was this possible? I spoke to her exactly an hour ago and I assured her I would check on her that same evening again. Now a female voice driven by hysteria was telling me the worst with the only euphemism she could conjure. I asked who else was there. She said Uncle Eric. Finally!! Uncle Eric has always been there for my mum. Her go-to guy and Mr. fix it. With Uncle Eric, nothing was ever broken. But when he got on the phone, he was broken. It was the first time I heard a strong man cry. That’s when I froze. I was in shock. She had just left me 24 hours earlier. I drove her to the airport. “Bovi I don’t want to miss my flight”, she had queried. I told her it was a Sunday. “The road is clear. Let’s cruise”! It was our last of many voyages. Just before she got into the arrival terminal I asked her to pose for a picture. I posted it on snapchat and captioned it “momma pls don’t go ???”. How ironic.”

He went on to share the unforgettable moments he shared with her.

“The memories came gushing as I drove back home to face my new reality; I remembered the first gift she gave me with a written message. It was an album. I was seven. I remembered how she took me to write my common entrance exam. As I walked out the hall, there she stood at the end of the hallway waiting with a lucid smile. She whispered to me “I know you did well”. I was ten. I remembered all the visits in boarding house. Staring at the gate of the school, it was only a matter of time before she drove in. She never disappointed. With love she would say, “you’re the first fruit of my womb. I baptized you myself”. A good woman died! .By 2pm of the 26th, I stood before her body. Even in death, I could feel her warmth. Even in its stiffness I could feel her tenderness. There she lay, forever irreplaceable.

Ace comedian, Bovi took to his Instagram page to warn a woman who is trying to blackmail him after he ignored several messages she sent on behalf of her husband.

    He wrote:

”The above woman has been going back and forth trying to blackmail me emotionally because she says I snubbed her husband’s messages. After failing to prove that I did that or that I know him personally, I urged her not to DM me on his behalf again if she has any regards for him. She went against my advice.

”I suspected she would so I have our entire chat history saved. This is d tail of it. It’s the dead of the night but this woman won’t just stop….. now this is a memo to whom it may concern; it’s easier to lie against me blatantly than to guilt trip me. If you try to make me feel bad I will make

”Now she’s not here to alter my temperament anymore so if you come for me, I will hug you tightly! We are all going to die someday! I’m not gonna spend my life manning the gates of anybody’s Insecurities!”
