  • Anthony Joshua, Usyk rematch set for March 2022

Anthony Joshua, Usyk rematch set for March 2022

Britain’s Anthony Joshua has triggered his clause for a rematch against heavyweight rival Oleksandr Usyk and the fight could take place in March, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said.

Joshua lost his WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts to Ukraine’s Usyk on a unanimous points decision at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month.

“He (Joshua) has got his head back in the game,” Hearn told DAZN on Saturday.

“He is training now and today we officially triggered the rematch for the Oleksandr Usyk fight, which we will see early next spring.

“We’re looking for him to become a three-time heavyweight world champion. I think realistically March is when you’re likely to see the rematch.”

A possible world heavyweight unification fight between Joshua and compatriot Tyson Fury, the WBC champion, was thrown into uncertainty after Fury’s promoter Frank Warren said he could not see it happening.

Fury is due to face American Deontay Wilder for the third time on Saturday in Las Vegas, with the Briton’s WBC heavyweight title on the line.

Watch Nigeria’s Efe Ajagba’s brutal knockout of Brian Howard

Nigerian heavyweight boxer, Efe Ajagba, is already creating a niche for himself in the elite category not just by winning his boxing bouts but the brutal way he does that.

Ajagba sent yet another warning to the division with one of the most brutal, one-punch knockouts boxing has seen in recent years.

The undefeated 26-year-old humiliated his opponent Brian Smith with a third-round knockout that has stunned the boxing world and the video has since gone viral.

While the opening rounds of the undercard fight had gone back and forth with Ajagba eating his fair share of shots despite marching Howard down, it was obvious it was a matter of time before the beast would come roaring.

In the third round, it was all over for Howard after he committed the grave error of failing to keep his guard up, looking for a quick counter.

Ajagba capitalised on that; punishing his opponent mercilessly.

“It feels really good,” Ajagba told ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna after yet another brutal victory

“I listened to the corner, they told me to start to the body and then go to the head. When I started with the jab to the body, it caused him to drop his hands. Then came the right hand.” he added

Fury sends Anthony Joshua threatening message after Pulev’s fight

WBC champion, Tyson Fury has said he can’t wait to knock out the unified heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, when they meet in an all-British bout in 2021.

Joshua knocked out his mandatory challenger, Kubrat Pulev, in round nine after a dramatic and entertaining affair that saw the Bulgarian knocked down four times to set up a possible clash with Fury.

Joshua after the fight had indicated that he wanted a fight with Fury but will also entertain other challengers for the belt.

“I’m up for anything. Who wants to see Anthony Joshua box Tyson Fury in 2021? I started this game in 2013 and I’ve been chasing the belts ever since.

“Whoever has got the belt, I would love to compete with them. If that is Tyson Fury then let it be Tyson Fury,” Joshua said after the fight.

Reacting to Joshua, Fury in response posted a video message on social media stating that he is ready to knock out Joshua in three rounds.

“Well, there you go everyone. Anthony Joshua just s*** himself live on television.

“He got asked if he wants the fight and he went around the bushes and put his a*** in the hedge.

“I want the fight, I want the fight next. I’ll knock him out inside three rounds. He’s a big, bum dosser, I can’t wait to knock him out,” Fury said.

Meanwhile, boxing promoter and Managing Director of Matchroom Sport, Eddie Hearn has said making the Joshua, Fury fight a possibility has become top priority.

“Starting from tomorrow, we make the Tyson Fury fight straight away. It’s the only fight to be made in boxing. It is the biggest fight in British boxing history,” he said after the fight.

“I know he (Joshua) wants it, He is the best heavyweight in the world, I promise you. He’ll break him down, he’ll knock him out,” he said.

Also, Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum tweeted after the fight, “It looks like the stage is set for the biggest Heavyweight championship fight since Ali-Frazier in 1971, when Tyson Fury meets Anthony Joshua for the undisputed crown. We at Top Rank will start on Monday working to put that fight together.”

Tyson return to boxing ring ends in surprising draw

Mike Tyson showed age has not robbed him of his power as the former heavyweight champion, in his long-awaited return to the ring, dominated Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition fight on Saturday in Los Angeles that was surprisingly ruled a draw.

While there were no ringside judges to score the eight-round contest between two of boxing’s all-time greats, both over 50, and no official winner, the World Boxing Council formed a set of judges that remotely scored the bout.

“I’m used to doing it for three minutes,” 54-year-old Tyson said of the shorter rounds. “Sometimes, that two minutes felt like three minutes. I’m happy I got this under my belt to keep doing this and go further.”

Tyson, 15 years removed from his ignominious defeat to Irishman Kevin McBride in the last professional fight of his career, came out firing and was in control of the bout the entire way.

Jones Jr, 51, was the more visibly fatigued of the two fighters, but managed to pick up the pace in the later rounds enough to earn the win on one scorecard and a draw on the other while Tyson took the third scorecard.

When the final bell rang, the two fighters shared a hug.

“The body shots definitely took a toll,” said Jones Jr. a former world champion in four different weight classes whose last professional fight was in 2018.

“The body shots are what make you exhausted.”

The two boxers were introduced by legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer, who delivered his famous “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble” inside the Staples Centre which was devoid of fans given the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the fight Tyson, who was once the most feared fighter on the planet, shot down any idea of making a return to professional boxing.

“This is bigger than fighting and winning the championship,” Tyson said of exhibitions where he donates earnings to charity. “We’re humanitarians and we’re helping people.”

BREAKING: Tyson Fury to face Anthony Joshua after defeating Wilder

With Sunday’s rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder already in the books, Eddie Hearn, promoter for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO has said heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will take on Fury in what is next.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Hearn vowed to make Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury happen in 2020, stressing he has already spoken to AJ, and that the heavyweight champion with Nigerian roots has expressed interest in the fight.

Speaking to talkSPORT after Fury’s seventh round victory in Las Vegas, the Matchroom promoter stated: “I’ve already spoken to AJ and he wants to go into this fight next.

“We have to make this fight happen. We will never, ever get the chance for two Brits to fight for an undisputed heavyweight world championship. I promise you we will do everything we can to make this fight. It has to happen.

“We will never get this opportunity in this sport to do this again with two Brits. I’ve already spoken to AJ – he wants to go straight into this fight next. He loves the Tyson fight, he has has zero fear of fighting Tyson Fury.

“He has been through everything already and he wants to be undisputed and this is the chance for our sport to have one of those legacy moments that we will never get the opportunity to have again”.

Recall Tyson Fury was wearing ‘Nigeria’ gum shield in his fight against Deontay Wilder. The photo of it did the rounds on social media, leaving many perplexed.

While some thought it was “a shout out to AJ”, others suggested perhaps Fury already has Joshua in mind.

Even when former professional boxer Kofi Yates seem to warn Eddie Hearn against letting Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury fight happen, he responded, “Ofcourse I am! And AJ wants it bad..this fight is gonna and has to happen this year!”

Even when Deontay Wilder has the option of a third fight against Tyson Fury, Eddie Hearn insisted Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury fight should happen instead.

“No need for a third let’s go straight to it in the Summer,” Eddie Hearn tweeted.

Deontay Wilder vowed to surpass his “idol” Muhammad Ali by knocking out Tyson Fury to land another defence of the world heavyweight title.

The 34-year-old American looked focused on a chaotic Tuesday in Las Vegas, where Fury arrived on an open-top Ferrari for a grand welcome ceremony attended by hundreds of fans.

The Briton, 31, continued to promise a knockout in Saturday’s rematch, while his rival eyed moving beyond legend Ali’s mark of 10 consecutive defences of the heavyweight title.

“It will be an amazing feeling, my 11th consecutive defence,” said Wilder.

  • Former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand denied boxing licence

Former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand denied boxing licence

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand says he is “disappointed” after being refused a professional boxing licence.

The 39-year-old, who retired from football in 2015, launched his new career in September.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) said they would not be reviewing his application, Ferdinand said.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves,” he said.

In his statement, published on Facebook, Ferdinand added: “To not be given the chance to demonstrate my ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment afforded to others is hard to take.”

Ferdinand’s move into the ring was being backed by betting company Betfair, as part of the ‘Defender to Contender’ challenge.

Coached by former WBC super-middleweight champion Richie Woodhall, the six-time Premier League champion aimed “to win a belt”.

“Boxing is a physically tough, demanding and dangerous sport. I always gave it my utmost respect and never underestimated how difficult it would be,” he said.

“It’s important to approach everything with success in mind, and to give it your all, but sometimes things work against you.”

He joined Manchester United in July 2002 for around £30 million, breaking the transfer fee record once more.

  • Boxing: Saul Alvarez banned for six months for failed drug tests

Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Japan’s Kenichi Ogawa have been suspended for six months following hearings with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after both boxers failed recent doping tests.

Alvarez was temporarily suspended by the NSAC after testing positive for banned substance clenbuterol in February and withdrew from his rematch against world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, which was scheduled for May 5.

In the settlement statement, the NSAC said the former two-weight world champion had co-operated with the investigation and thus his ban had been backdated to the first time he tested positive, meaning he can return to the ring from Aug. 17.

“Canelo looks forward to returning to the ring in September for Mexican Independence Day weekend to represent Mexico and boxing in what will be the sport’s biggest event of the year,” Alvarez’s promoters Golden Boy Promotions said in a statement.

“He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level,” it added of the 27-year-old who has a 49-1-2 record.

According to an ESPN report, the NSAC stripped Ogawa of his IBF super-featherweight title, which he won by beating American Tevin Farmer on Dec. 9, after the 30-year-old’s pre-fight tests were positive for two forms of androstanediol.

Teiken Gym, where Ogawa (23-1) trains, said on Thursday that the NSAC had also invalidated the fight and fined the boxer 20 percent of his prize purse.

Ogawa’s suspension has also been backdated to the first time he tested positive and his ban will be lifted on June 9.

  • Anthony Joshua beats Parker to unify WBA, IBF, WBO belts

Anthony Joshua beats Parker to unify WBA, IBF, WBO belts

Anthony Joshua unified the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles as a controlled performance saw him earn a unanimous points win over Joseph Parker at a tense Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

The Briton used his left hand to telling effect throughout an intriguing affair, in which New Zealand’s Parker displayed swift hands, movement and impressive durability.

But his WBO title always looked like it would end up round Joshua’s waist as a significant points gap opened up, with the favourite landing a hard left uppercut in round eight and two stinging left hooks early in the 10th.

According to BBC, Parker tagged his rival to howls of concern in the 11th and he deserves immense respect for becoming the first man to take Joshua to the scorecards, which read 118-110 118-110 119-109.

Joshua raised his right hand on ring announcer Michael Buffer’s reading of the cards and he now holds three of the four recognised world titles. Parker looked to the sky.

But the New Zealander played his part in a compelling evening and brought colour to an intriguing build-up.

Never before had two world champions from the glamour division met to unify titles on British soil. For the away fighter this was a whole new level of scrutiny; for Joshua, it was a third consecutive stadium fight, with a cumulative 250,000 seats sold in the process.

Each fighter walked to the ring to an accompaniment of strobe lights, flames and fireworks, with the estimated 78,000 in attendance providing a glittering background as smart phones lit up the tiers.

When the bell rang, Parker looked sharp, flicking his left jab to keep his opponent at bay and maintaining a guard with just his right hand, compared with two high hands from Joshua.

Afterwards, Joshua pointed to a bout he felt came down to “boxing finesse” and there is no doubt he used the jab and repeated left hooks tactically to stave off his opponent’s threat.

It took until the halfway stage before either man truly began to load their shots, as early respect gave way. Parker, stung early in the sixth, gave chase and landed his own left hand from a crouched position.

The beaten man admitted he lost to a “better champion” but he at least showed the “granite chin” his camp had built much of their hope on beforehand.

Unlike Joshua, Parker has never been dropped as an amateur or a professional and he showed his durability in sucking up two hard left hooks early in the 10th.

This was a more chess-like Joshua. The knockout artist Britain has grown to love was forced to show us poise over 36 minutes, although the result never really looked in doubt.
