18-year-old girl strangled to death few hours after receiving call from boyfriend

An 18-year old girl identified as Favour Ogheneyenrowho, has been reportedly strangled to death by suspected ritualists in Abraka, Ethiope-East council area of Delta State.

The incident has thrown the community into serious tension.

According to eyewitness accounts, the victim’s pubic hairs were shaved off before she was murdered and her remains kept in a “Ghana-must-Go” bag which was disposed at a dump site behind Ozoro park in the town.

Witnesses said there were violent marks around her neck area, indicating that she was violently strangulated.

Ogheneyenrowho hailed from Ughere in Abraka Community.

Recounting the incident leading to the teenager’s demise, Maureen Sunday, her elder sister, told the police that Favour, had received a call from a male at about 10 a.m, requesting that she met him at the Abraka park.

She however replied the caller that she was going to the market with her elder sister.

Miss Sunday added that on their way out of their residence located along Winners Road, a young man, whom she had never seen before (whom she believed was the same person that called her sister earlier), boarded a motorcycle that stopped at the junction and approached them.

A short conversation ensued between them and her late sister, Favour, joined him on the bike and they rode off, even as she called after her to return early.

Unfortunately, it was the shocking news of her sister, dead and tied with ropes in a sack, that reached her the following day.

When reached for confirmation, the Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, explained that what had been discovered so far revealed that the killing of the victim was more of a murder case and not ritual killing.

The police boss also revealed that the suspected killer, who is believed to be Favour’s boyfriend, has since been on the run, adding that the state police command was already on his trial.

Explaining the circumstances around the killing of Favour, CP Adeleke said “”the lady in question was with the sister and she had a call. When she wanted to leave, she told her sister that it’s her boyfriend that she wanted to go and see.

“After some time she disappeared, they did not see her. The next day they saw her body tied in a sack in a plantain/ banana plantation and her boyfriend runaway.

“So it is not a ritual, but a murder case. The physical sign in her body shows in the neck that she was strangulated. Maybe somebody tempered with her neck and throw her body into the bush and now the boyfriend disappeared till now. He is on the run.

“If he had nothing to do with what happened, why did he disappeared? Why is he on the run? That is exactly what happened; not ritual killing, but a case of murder. Her body has been taken to the mortuary,” he explained.

  • The same boyfriend who flew me to Dubai, slept with my friend-Ella Mensah

Ella Mensah isn’t exactly a household name in Nigeria, but one to reckon with in Ghana, where she plies her trade.

The sexy and daring screen diva who started acting in 2008 said 2019 has been a great year for her so far.

In her words:” 2019 has been great, even though we are in the second month of 2019, everything has been great! This year really looks wonderful for me I must say I am really happy right now,” she told TheNewsGuru.

The irrepressible Ella, who dumped journalism for the glam world of make-belief, would later speak with TheNewsGuru on how her ex-boyfriend slept with her friend.

“Acting has really caused me two relationships; both men had a problem with me playing some roles and eventually asked me to quit acting which I refused! One even asked me to choose between him and my career and obviously I chose my career! Most African men are extremely jealous and can’t stand to see another man kiss their woman even in a movie! It’s sad though but I guess it is what it is”.

On how she was betrayed by her ex-lover, she said:” The same boyfriend who flew me out to Dubai and bought me a diamond ring also slept with my close friend”

A domestic worker and her plumber boyfriend have been apprehended and handed over to men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), after preliminary investigations revealed that they were involved in alleged kidnap of 15-year-old Bella which they reportedly intended to use for money rituals.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) gathered that the domestic worker known as Tope [Surname withheld] and her plumber boyfriend, Sunday [Surname withheld] allegedly connived and kidnapped the victim, Bella on New Year Day.

17-year-old Tope said she carried out the dastard act with 24-year-old Sunday, who is a plumber to Bella’s guardian, because he had promised her marriage, TNG gathered.

Tope during interrogation said: “Sunday, my boyfriend called me on phone on the 30th of December 2018, saying he wants to be rich and that he is tired of wallowing in poverty”.

Sunday and Tope all loved up

She further said: “I asked him how he intends to become rich, knowing that he is a plumber”.

“He then said he will do what his mates are doing to get money.

“I then asked him if he wants to go into money rituals, but he said nothing,” Tope stated.

“Thereafter, he convinced me that once he becomes rich, he is going to marry me.

“He called me very early on the 1st of January to bring Bella outside the gate of our house, which I did,” she added.

While explaining how she got Bella to Sunday, Tope said, “I woke Bella up and I took her outside in the guise of going to sweep the entrance of the house.

“She succumbed and I left her outside with hope that Sunday would come to pick her.

“I don’t know if Sunday came to pick her himself or if he sent someone to pick her”.

In a chat with TNG, Bella’s guardian, whom Tope is working for, speaking on the incident, said that when Bella could not be found, they were compelled to question Tope, after discovering there had been communication between the plumber and her before and on the day of Bella’s disappearance.

The guardian who reside in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos state said they had woken up with high hopes on the 1st of January 2019, getting set for their morning devotion when they found Bella was missing.

“We had to beckon on Tope to go upstairs to call Bella for the morning devotion.

“Amazingly, she wasn’t found and that was how she became missing for 3 days,” the guardian narrated.

“She didn’t even confess until after Bella came back. When Bella came back, she was shocked. She was even crying.

“I was thinking she was shocked that she has seen her, but later I realize that the shock was not about that.

“It was about the fact that everything has been exposed,” he further stated.

TNG gathered that Bella was miraculously found in the neighbourhood January 3rd looking shabby, without footwear.

However, when Bella was questioned by her guardian about her disappearance in the night of her return, she could not recall anything, and then lost consciousness.

“She cannot remember anything,” family sources who preferred anonymity told TNG.

According to the guardian, she was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment, where she is said to be recuperating.

After hearing Tope’s confession, the guardian reported the case to the police in Festac town.

“The case is still there at the Festac police station,” the guardian said.

The guardian revealed that the police is also following up on one Alfa that Sunday took Bella to for ritual purpose.

He said the police saw communication between Sunday and the Alfa, but that when Sunday was interrogated, he denied he doesn’t know anyone like that.

However, Sunday later agreed he knows the Alfa, whom he took Bella to for the ritual purpose.

“The police are saying that Tope is just 17, a juvenile, therefore, should be released on administrative bail.

“I have to call the DPO and told him I don’t understand what his men are saying, that they want to release a kidnap suspect on a weekend on administrative bail on age grounds without proper investigation of the case,” he said.

When contacted, the DPO, did not immediately pick TNG’s call nor returned our calls as at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the guardian told TNG that “Sunday could not say much because probably he has sworn to an oath not to reveal anything on the matter”.

“If we didn’t find this girl, today, it would have been a different story. If the girl didn’t come back or we didn’t see her, we will be running helter-skelter, she will be sitting down here eating, and be asking, “Have you found her?” You will think she is on our side.

“And more danger in it is that, if Sunday should finish with the rituals and the money comes, and Tope is still here, God forbid, he might want to eliminate Tope since she knows the secret.

“They will say, one got missing, another one died, this pastor, what is he doing with people’s children. So, I really thank God.

“We thank God that Bella is getting better at the hospital where she has been placed on admission,” the guardian stated.

According to a report by The Punch, the incident which occurred in one of the hostels within the Aladinma Alliance area of the school on Wednesday night threw the university community into mourning.

It was gathered that the 21-year-old was a third-year student of the department of computer science of the university.

A source in the school confirmed that the female undergraduate poisoned herself after stabbing her boyfriend over an undisclosed issue.

The source said “A student of our school has taken her own life. She was studying computer science and was supposed to graduate in 2019. She was in the third year.”

She poisoned herself after stabbing her boyfriend.”

Sources within the hostel said that the deceased had thought that she had killed her boyfriend and out of fear she committed suicide.

Her boyfriend, Johnson, who was rushed to Federal Medical Center, Owerri, did not die. He is said to be recovering.

She ate the poisonous substance out of fear that she had killed her own boyfriend.

This is tragic. It is highly absurd. It is regrettable because these kind of things are what we watch in Bollywood and Nollywood. Her remains have been evacuated to the mortuary,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations officer of the University, Obi Njoku, said that the school was in a state of confusion over the “irritating news.”

Njoku who wondered at the gravity of disagreement between a man and a woman that would make a young girl to take her own life, advised students to pay less attention to frivolities and “marry their books.”

The IMSU spokesperson revealed that the institution would investigate to find out what actually happened.

  • How Ondo ex-deputy governor’s daughter was killed in my house – Boyfriend

How Ondo ex-deputy governor’s daughter was killed in my house – Boyfriend

Saidu-Shakiru Adeyemi, the boyfriend of Miss Khadijat Oluboyo, the slain daughter of Lasisi Oluboyo, former deputy governor of Ondo State, has denied involvement in her death.

Miss Oluboyo, the 25 year-old final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, was on Sunday found dead at the home of her boyfriend in Akure, the state capital.

Mr Adeyemi denied involvement in Oluboyo’s death when he faced journalists at the headquarters of the Ondo State Police Command on Wednesday in Akure.

According to him, it was the slain girl that brought two boys into his room, who eventually killed her.

Mr Adeyemi explained that he had dated Oluboyo for four years before they parted ways in 2015, and that they only reconciled after the last Ramadan celebration.

Adeyemi, who completed his National Youth Service in 2017, said he had no reason to kill her because he hoped to use her father’s connection to secure job.

He said that Khadijat came to his house on Thursday because of her project which he was helping her to do.

According to him, they had finished chapter one and her supervisor had already approved it and she came for final correction so that she could move to chapter two.

He explained further that the girl later travelled to Lagos on Friday to buy some wrist watches but she forgot to drop her project with him and promised to return to school from Lagos.

Meanwhile, on Saturday she snapped both the soft and hard copy of her project to me on my WhatsApp for correction.

On Monday, I believed she was already in school when she sent me a text message to send her N2,000. But I was able to send only N1,000.

So, I was surprised when I heard a knock on my door later in the day and she entered my room.

She later told me that she wanted to receive some visitors in my place, and few minutes later she brought two boys in. I was not surprised because that was not her first time to bring someone to my house.

Later when they came in, we exchanged greetings and I left them in the room. But after 30 minutes, one of the boys called me in and I discovered he held a small gun in his hand while the other boy was on her, naked.

And I heard Khadijat saying ‘I will not tell anybody.’ The boy strangled her to death and threatened me not to shout or else they would kill me.

They later forced me to find a digger with which they dug the ground in my room and buried her

They are the ones that killed and buried her. I could not shout after they left because of the implication of what has happened, for I was sure nobody would believe me.

On the fifth day, I was not comfortable anymore, so I exhumed her body and confided in my younger brother who advised that we should inform our father about the development.

It was my father who informed the police before I was arrested,” Mr Adeyemi said.

Femi Joseph, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, who paraded Mr Adeyemi with other suspects, said he would soon be charged to court after completion of investigation.

The suspect, who is also the deceased boyfriend was said to be staying permanently in Abuja.

It was learnt that Alao had made attempts to bury Khadijat’s corpse in his house at Oke-Aro area of Akure.

According to a source, he had dug a grave in the room, before nemesis caught up with him.

Khadihat, a-20-year-old final year student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko was said to be fond of visiting his ex-lover each time he came to Akure from Abuja and usually passed the night with him.

There were speculations that the suspected killer was a “yahoo boy” who planned to use her late girlfriend for rituals Police spokesman, Femi Joseph, a Superintendent of Police(SP) said the suspect was arrested by a team of detectives from the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

He said the suspect, who was already in police custody has been cooperating with the police on relevant information on the circumstances that led to the death of Khadijat.

Joseph said the Commissioner of Police will address the press after they conclude their investigations on the matter.

He assured that the case would be thoroughly investigated with a view to establishing facts behind the death of the Ikare-Akoko born University final year student.

The PPRO said the suspect and others who might have involved in the death of Khadijat would be prosecuted.

  • Ex NNPC staff, Godwin Elewana sentenced to death for killing daughter’s boyfriend

Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar on Wednesday sentenced a retired worker of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Godwin Elewana, to death by hanging.

The court found Elewana guilty of the murder of a 22-year-old pupil, Douglas Ojugbo, on March 10, 2015 over suspicion that the victim was having an affair with his daughter, Mercy.

Elewana, who had been in prison custody since 2016, was arraigned on one count of murder in case no. HC/9C/2015.

The presiding judge of the court, Justice Ukpa Ebitam, said the prosecution team, led by Mr. Eneji Amajama, a Deputy Director in the Department of Public Prosecutions in the state Ministry of Justice, proved its case that the accused committed the crime.

Ebitam listed the several confessional statements, hospital reports and other exhibits presented in the course of trial as reasons the accused was convicted.

He said, “The prosecution team was able to establish ingredients of murder against the accused. On whether it was the act of the accused that caused the death of the victim, the prosecution team placed reliance mostly on the confessional statement of the accused…clearly, the statement linked the murder to the accused.

“The prosecution team also proved the second ingredient of murder which was the intentional act. To have fired the victim twice with his pump-action gun, I agree that the killing was intentional. I hereby find the accused person guilty of murder.

“Subject to Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Cross River State, any person who commits murder is sentenced to death by hanging.”

Moments before the verdict was given, the defence counsel, Mr. Clement Ukaegbu, had pleaded for leniency.

Ukaegbu’s position was supported by another lawyer, Mr. Orchardson Umoh, who pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy on the grounds that the convict had a good religious standing and high integrity in the society.

Shortly after the verdict, the leader of the prosecution team, Amajama, said the law had taken its course.

He said, “I thank God that we have industrious and sound judges who still uphold the rule of law. Today, the parents of the deceased would have some respite that the law of the land took its course.

“This judgement will serve as a deterrent to others that you cannot do what is wrong and go away with it and I think that our society will be better for it.

“The accused was tried under Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Cross River State. Under this section, the judge does not have the right to give him life imprisonment or any other jail term. The judge has just done what the law stipulates.”

  • My boyfriend battered me, killed my sister for refusing abortion – woman tells court

A 27-year-old woman, Justina Dusu, on Friday told a Jos High Court that her boyfriend, Stephen Luka, got her pregnant and when confronted, battered her and killed her sister.

Dusu, a resident of Foron, Barkin-Ladi Local Government of Plateau, who stood as a witness, testified against the accused, Stephen Luka, of Tudun Wada, Jos, who is being tried over murder, assault and sexual abuse.

The accused, who has denied the allegations, is also facing a charge of attempted murder.

The accused was alleged to have attacked the two sisters on July 27, 2016 at his home, in Sabon Gari, Tudun Wada, Jos, after they went to confront him over Justina’s pregnancy.

Dusu, who is heavily pregnant, told the court, in her testimony, that the accused person, with whom she had been in a relationship since 2007, got her pregnant last year.

“I met Stephen on Dec. 2 2007, while I was still in secondary school. I later left to Abuja, but came back to Jos in May 2016.

“We met on my return and he invited me to his place sometime in June 2016, where he had sex with me.

“I later realised I was pregnant and called his attention to it; he told me he was not ready to be a father and suggested an abortion which I promptly rejected.

“I told him I would rather give birth to the baby and give to my parents than have an abortion.

“On July 25, I told my sister, late Simi Dusu, about the pregnancy and Luka’s idea of an abortion.

“She tried to reach him on phone without success and we decided to go to see him in his house.

“On July 27, we took a cab to his house, when I sighted him, we alighted and followed him to the house.

“He didn’t deny the pregnancy, but said that he was not ready to be a father, and that his parents had already chased him out of the house.

“While we were discussing, my sister stepped out to receive a phone but before she returned, he started hitting me on my head.

“When I started screaming, my sister tried to enter, but he locked the door. She forced the door open and he descended on her with a machete and killed her.

“He again returned to me and kept hitting me; I only regained consciousness at the Hwolshe Medical Centre, Jos, and received the news that my sister had died,” she told the court.

She denied engaging in a fight with her sister over Stephen as alleged by the defense counsel, and described that allegation as a “lie”.

Another witness, Rifkatu Yusuf, who is a sister to the deceased, denied the possibility of a fight between the deceased and Justina,

She said that she did not know Luka until he called her to meet him at the hospital over her sister’s condition.

After taking the witnesses, the prosecutor, Muleng Alex, prayed the court to adjourn the matter to another date, citing the long hours already spent on taking witnesses, a move the defense counsel did not object.

The judge, Justice Nafisa Musa, adjourned the matter to Feb. 28, for continuation of hearing.
