8 Brazilian players banned from playing in EPL

Eight Brazil players are set to be missing from Premier League games at the weekend after the Brazilian federation invoked a FIFA rule that will temporarily suspend them.

According to Goal, FIFA has informed clubs that the controversial ‘five-day rule’ will be imposed by the Brazilian FA, preventing eight players from five clubs from featuring in this round of domestic fixtures.

Liverpool trio Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino are all impacted, as are Manchester City duo Gabriel Jesus and Ederson, Manchester United midfielder Fred and Leeds star Raphinha. Clubs have been warned they will face sanctions, which could include forfeiting games, should they fail to comply.

Brazil, Argentina face FIFA disciplinary probe over suspended match

World football governing body FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings involving both the Brazilian and Argentinian football associations following the suspension of Sunday’s 2022 World Cup qualifier in Sao Paulo.

The match was called off amid extraordinary scenes as officials, believed to be from Brazil’s health authority, stormed on to the pitch in Sao Paulo shortly after kick-off.

Their action was over an alleged coronavirus breach by the visiting team’s England-based players.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino described the situation as “crazy” on Monday, and the world governing body’s disciplinary committee will now investigate the circumstances which led to the suspension.

“Following the analysis of the official match reports related to the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened involving both member associations,” a statement from FIFA read.

“The two teams were asked to provide further information on the facts which led to the suspension of the match, which will be gathered and then thoroughly reviewed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. Updates will follow in due course.”

According to ANVISA, the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency, Argentina’s four English Premier League (EPL) players are alleged to have declared false information on official forms to the country’s authorities.

The players are: Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia.

In doing so, they are deemed to have broken quarantine rules.

The Spurs duo can expect to be fined when they return to club duty, it was gathered.

Top-flight and EFL clubs had announced they would not permit players to travel to countries on the UK Government’s COVID-19 “red list”.

This had prompted Infantino to write to Prime Minster Boris Johnson to request exemptions, which were not forthcoming.

It had previously been agreed with Aston Villa that Martinez and Buendia would not be involved for Argentina’s next match against Bolivia.

This was to minimise their period of unavailability after arriving back in the UK and needing to quarantine.

Argentina later confirmed Martinez and Buendia had been authorised to now return to their club.

While they will not feature against Chelsea in the EPL on Saturday, they should be clear to play again for the visit of Everton on Sept. 18.

However, it is understood Tottenham are currently unsure when Romero and Lo Celso are due back.

It was understood that they were not given permission to join up with Argentina, and they will be hit with fines when they eventually return to club duties.

Romero, a summer signing from Atalanta, and Lo Celso started Sunday night’s match, along with Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez, but Buendia was not in the matchday squad of 23 players.

ANVISA said it had been confirmed, following passport checks, that the four players “failed to comply with the rule for the entry of travellers on Brazilian soil”.

This was after declaring they had not passed through the UK in the last 14 days, which would have necessitated quarantining on arrival.

The situation was considered “a serious health risk”.

The local health authorities were advised “to determine the immediate quarantine of players, who are prevented from participating in any activity and must be prevented from remaining in Brazilian territory”.

The Argentina team responded to the entrance of the officials and the police by walking off the pitch and down the tunnel.

I could make Premier League return – David Luiz

Brazilian player David Luiz admits he’s not yet found a new club.

The released Arsenal defender has seen an offer from Olympique Marseille fall through and remains a free agent.

He told the Daily Mail: “It will be the same as before – a club with ambition.

“The offers made so far have not touched my heart. I want to stay at a high level. Maybe it will be in the Premier League. I work everyday. I want pressure, to fight for titles.

“I want that feeling of having to win every week. This is why I have always played football, and why I still play. I want to feel alive.”

Brazil clinch successive Olympic men’s football gold medal

Malcom showed his strength in extra-time to give Brazil a 2-1 win over Spain and a second straight Olympic men’s football gold medal on Saturday.

The Zenit St Petersburg player shrugged off defender Jesus Vallejo too easily and slotted home in the 108th minute, in spite of the best efforts of goalkeeper Unai Simon.

Brazil, who beat Germany on penalty kicks for their first Olympic men’s title in Rio five years ago, had an experienced side like Spain.

Veteran Dani Alves was among those complementing the under-23 side.

Hertha Berlin forward Matheus Cunha put Brazil ahead on the stroke of half-time in Yokohama and they should have already been in the lead but for Richarlison’s penalty kick miss.

The Everton forward then hit the bar in the second half.

This was just before Mikel Oyarzabal, who like Simon was also part of Spain’s Euro 2020 squad, levelled on 61 minutes with a superb volley.

Spain substitute Bryan Gil then rattled the woodwork from distance with a minute left of normal time.

Malcom had the final say however with Spain having a penalty kick appeal waved away minutes later.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil set up Olympics final with Spain

Brazil reached back-to-back men’s Olympic football finals following a penalty shootout victory over Mexico.

The defending champions won 4-1 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Kashima.

Brazil goalkeeper Santos saved from Eduardo Aguirre in the shootout before Johan Vasquez hit the post with Mexico’s second penalty.

They will play Spain in Saturday’s gold medal match.

Dani Alves, Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Bruno Guimaraes and Reinier all scored their spot-kicks for Brazil.

It looked like the second semi-final was heading for penalties until Marco Asensio scored in the 115th minute in Saitama.

The Real Madrid winger came off the bench to score the winning goal with a superb curling strike from inside the box to send Spain to a first Olympic final since they finished runners-up at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

  • Ex-Man Utd coach accused of hating Brazilian players

Ex-Man Utd coach accused of hating Brazilian players

Former Manchester United defender, Rafael, has claimed Louis van Gaal asked him to leave the club because he “hates” Brazilian players.

In the past, Rafael described Van Gaal as “one of the worst” coaches he has ever worked with.

The season before Van Gaal took over, the 31-year-old had been a fairly regular starter at United.

But in the Dutchman’s first season in 2014/2015, he was reduced to just 11 first-team appearances.

Van Gaal then sold him to Lyon in 2015, ending Rafael’s seven-year stay at Old Trafford.

Rafael’s twin brother Fabio also left United in 2014, the year van Gaal arrived.

“I never got an explanation. When Van Gaal arrived, he just said: “OK, you leave”.

“He came in with an idea of the players he wanted, and didn’t want, and set about making those changes instantly. He never explained it to me.

“But I’ve heard a few explanations from other people and, even before he arrived, everyone was telling me, “He hates Brazilians”.

“I don’t know if it’s true or not but I heard it started with Rivaldo when Van Gaal was manager of Barcelona. He put Rivaldo on the bench and Rivaldo started speaking badly of him, trying to sack him, you know. After that, they say he started to hate Brazilians: “Those Brazilians love to sack managers”, something like that,” Rafael told The Athletic.

Argentina beat Brazil for Copa America, Messi wins first title

Argentina ended their 28-year title drought on Saturday when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil for a record-equalling 15th Copa America.

The victory was a particular triumph for Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, who picked up his first ever title in a blue and white shirt after more than a decade of club and individual honours.

Messi finished the tournament’s joint top goalscorer with four goals and was elected joint best player along with Neymar.

But he was quiet throughout and uncharacteristically missed a golden opportunity to wrap the game up with two minutes remaining.

When the final whistle went, Argentina TV declared “Argentina Champions, Lionel Messi Champion!”

The victory was Argentina’s 15th Copa America triumph and means they draw level with Uruguay as the all-time leading winners.

Their win extended their sequence of undefeated matches to 20 under Lionel Scaloni and handed Brazil their first competitive defeat since they lost to Belgium in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Di Maria started for just the second time in the Copa and he justified his selection by scoring the opener midway through the first half.

Renan Lodi failed to cut out a long ball forward from Rodrigo De Paul and Di Maria lobbed the stranded Ederson with aplomb.

Brazil piled on the pressure in an exciting second half but even with five strikers on the field they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul.

Copa America final caps great season from Fred – Solskjaer

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Fred deserves special recognition for his role in helping Brazil reach the final of Copa America.

The United midfielder has played a key role in helping the Selecao set up a massive clash with fierce rivals Argentina in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“I have to put particular praise to Fred,” Solskjaer told manutd/.com. “I’ve got to say, at the end of the season, he got an injury in the last league game. We thought he wouldn’t make it for the [Europa League] final as he didn’t train the whole week before our own final, and he’s just put his head down and worked really hard.

“He trained the day before the final and came on and played.

“He’s just played throughout the summer and that’s some going. Some players with that injury wouldn’t be in training football now. He’s been a credit to Manchester United and himself in the way he’s conducted himself.”

Arsenal duo named in Brazil’s Olympics squad

Arsenal pair Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli have been named in Brazil’s Olympics squad.

Coach Andre Jardine has announced a 22-man squad for the Tokyo games after FIFA sanctioned an increase of the initial number of 18.

However, clubs can refuse to release their players for the Olympics as they’re not considered to be part of the official football calendar, as a result of which Jardine has had to make some changes to his original selection.

Martinelli received a call up alongside Everton forward Richarlison and PAOK’s Douglas Augusto after Flamengo, Marseille and Zenit St Petersburg refused to release Pedro, Gerson and Malcom respectively.

Borussia Dortmund’s young midfielder Reinier, on loan from Real Madrid has also been included in the squad after initially missing out.

  • Nigeria extends COVID-19 ban on Turkey, India, Brazil by four weeks

Nigeria extends COVID-19 ban on Turkey, India, Brazil by four weeks

The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 has extended the ban on flights from Brazil, Turkey and India by four weeks.

Speaking at the national briefing in Abuja on Monday, the Chairman, PSC on COVID-19, Mr Boss Mustapha, said “a few weeks ago, we announced additional measures to be met by passengers arriving from Brazil, Turkey and India.

”This action was due to the prevalence of variants of concern and the dangers associated with importation of the such virulent strain.

Recall that as of May 2021, the PSC banned incoming flights from Brazil, India and Turkey, noting that anyone who had been in those three countries within 14 days of their intended arrival date in Nigeria would be barred from entering the country.

According to Mustapha, the PSC has been reviewing these restrictions and is of the opinion that they should remain for another four weeks before it is further reviewed.

”South Africa has, however, been added to this category once more.”

Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), disclosed that South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Namibia and Uganda were being monitored as the COVID-19 cases were increasing there.

“In addition to these three countries, the PSC has also shifted its focus on some African countries.

”South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Namibia and Uganda fall in this category.

“South Africa for example, recorded over 100,000 cases in the last one week while 20,000 was recorded in the last 24 hours.

”The four major variants of concern are now classified as Alpha (UK), Beta (SA); Gamma (Brazil) and Delta (India).

”The Delta variant which has wreaked devastating havoc, is not yet found in Nigeria hence the need to tighten our borders and be more vigilant,” the SGF said.

He said that about six months ago, following the violation of the COVID-19 protocols by some inbound passengers to Nigeria, their travel documents were barred for a period of six months.

“We have received several appeals from those affected while we counselled on the importance of compliance with rules and regulations.

”The six-month period of ban for the first batch of 100 is almost complete and we use this opportunity to reassure Nigerians that sanctions will be imposed on violators of measures put in place to protect them and safeguard our nation.

”For over six months, federal government employees on GL 12 and below have been observing work-from-home instructions.

”This restriction remains in place until further notice in order to avert a third wave,” Mustapha added.
