Football legend Pele embarrassed to leave home

Brazil football great Pele is reluctant to leave his house because he cannot walk unaided due to his poor health, his son has said.

The three-time World Cup winner, who will be 80 in October, received treatment in Paris last April for a urinary infection.

Pele, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, has had hip trouble for some time and now needs a frame to walk, with many of his recent public appearances in a wheelchair.

“He’s embarrassed, he doesn’t want to go out, be seen, or do practically anything that involves leaving the house,” his son Edinho told TV Globo in Brazil.

    “He is very sheepish, reclusive.”

Edinho said that he had argued with his father because he had not done the physiotherapy called for after a hip operation.

“He’s pretty fragile. He had a hip replacement and didn’t have an adequate or ideal rehabilitation,” his son added.

“So he has this problem with mobility and that has set off a kind of depression. Imagine, he’s the king, he was always such an imposing figure and today he can’t walk properly.”

This summer will mark the 50th anniversary of the striker’s third World Cup title, won in Mexico in 1970 with what many people believe is the greatest team of all time.

  • Jailbreak: 26 inmates escape from prison

Twenty-six inmates escaped from a Brazilian prison in the northwestern state of Acre early on Monday, with all but one remaining at large, the state prison authority said.

The jailbreak comes just a day after 75 inmates escaped from a Paraguay jail on the Brazilian border.

Paraguayan authorities had said on Sunday those escapees included members of Brazil’s most powerful and sophisticated organised crime group, the First Capital Command (PCC).

Brazilian authorities on Monday said it was not yet clear if members of the PCC were among those who fled the Acre prison, or if the two jailbreaks were related.

Incarcerated gang members, who sometimes engage in bloody violence, often wield vast powers in Brazilian prisons.

Brazil’s incarcerated population stands at 750,000 people, the third highest in the world.

Golden Eaglets’ victory, a lesson in resilience – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has applauded the performance of the Golden Eaglets in their second game at the ongoing Under 17 FIFA World Cup competition in Brazil, on Tuesday.

The Golden Eaglets won the match by 3-2 after they had trailed Ecuador by 1-2, 15 minutes to the end of the match.

President Buhari, in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina in Abuja, said: “The fact that the youngsters never gave up, and turned the table against their opponents, is a lesson in persistence and resilience.”

The president recommended the can-do spirit displayed by the young boys to Nigerians, urging them to display such in all areas of endeavour, and in national development.

While wishing the Eaglets well in their final group match against Australia, which may well be a formality, Buhari pledged government support to the team, as they strive to win the Under 17 World Cup yet again, thus confirming Nigeria’s position as a global power at that level.

With the win against Ecuador, Nigeria remain top of Group B and will face Australia in their last group game on Nov. 1.

David Luiz speaks on quitting Arsenal

Arsenal defender, David Luiz, has said he is not looking to leave the Emirates soon, amid speculation he could return to his native Brazil.

The 32-year-old is only a matter of months into a two-year contract with the Gunners, after arriving from Chelsea in the summer.

Luiz said he will give his all to Arsenal until at least 2021.

Luiz told ESPN Brasil: “I, today, have no such plan. I don’t have that as a goal. But we never know, football goes very fast.

“What makes me happy is to see the quality of Brazilian football. You see Jorge Jesus with Flamengo, and the great players like Felipe, Rafinha, Gerson, Gagibol, who’s back shining as he did at first at Santos.

“So without a doubt, I’m happy for our football. I am glad about the ever-growing quality.

“I’m sincere to say that today I don’t have this idea. I have a two-year contract with Arsenal. I have ambitions and goals here with Arsenal, so I came here. But we never know in the future.”

10 missing, one confirmed dead as 7-storey building collapses

A seven-story residential building collapsed in the northeastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza on Tuesday, killing at least one person, rescue workers told TV channel GloboNews.

Another 10 people were declared missing and seven people were found alive, the rescue workers said.

The building fell at around 10:30 a.m. local time (1330 GMT), but it was not immediately clear what caused the accident or how many total victims may be involved.

Fire brigade and civil defence officials were not immediately available to provide further details.

Television footage showed a handful of rescuers in orange suits digging through a massive pile of wreckage in a middle class area of Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara state.

Ceara Governor Camilo Santana wrote on social media that he has mobilised state resources to help with the rescue. Santana also said he canceled his agenda and was traveling to Fortaleza.

According to G1 news website, pedestrians who were passing by the building when it collapsed were taken to nearby medical clinics, and access to streets surrounding the wreckage was closed by authorities.

  • Super Eagles respect but don’t fear Brazil – Ekong

Super Eagles’ stand–in captain William Troost-Ekong says while they respect five–times world champions Brazil they however have no fear as both teams step out in a friendly in Singapore.

Ekong made the remarks on Saturday at a pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash with Brazil at the Singapore National Stadium in Kallang.

He said his team was inspired by the 1-1 draw fellow West African neighbors Senegal played with the South Americans.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal on Thursday in Singapore.

“Brazil are a top team, probably the best team in the world, but Senegal gave them a good fight on Thursday.

“We can pick some inspiration from that performance when we play the Brazilians on Sunday.

“It will be tough because they will want to win at least one game against an African team on this tour, but we will also want to take something off them,” he said.

NAN also reports that Sunday’s encounter starts at 8 p.m. Singapore time (1p.m. Nigeria time).

Head Coach Manu Garba, who led the 2013 winners, is confident that the Class of 2019 is in Brazil to reclaim the trophy.

The early departure will afford the Golden Eaglets a full two-week final preparatory period, before their opening match of the tournament against Hungary in Goiania on Oct. 26.

Nigeria will then clash with Ecuador at the same venue on Oct. 29 and later tackle Australia in Brasilia on Nov. 1 in a Group B encounter.

Brazil v Senegal: Neymar’s 100th cap ends in draw

Neymar became the seventh man to win 100 caps for Brazil in a friendly draw with Senegal in Singapore.

The Paris St-Germain forward could not add to his 61 international goals in a frustrating display in front of a sparse crowd.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino put Brazil ahead with a lovely chip from Gabriel Jesus’ clever pass.

And after Sadio Mane had been fouled, Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou equalised from the penalty spot.

Neymar twice went close late on from free-kicks but landed one on the roof of the net and saw a second one well saved by Alfred Gomis.

Senegal went closest to a winner as Liverpool’s Mane – who played the full 90 minutes at the National Stadium – hit the post from the edge of the area.
