Antony dropped from Brazil over domestic violence claims

Manchester United Antony has been removed from the Brazilian national football team squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to serious allegations of domestic violence.

The Brazilian football federation CBF has said.

“As a result of the facts that came to light on Monday (04/09) involving Manchester United striker Antony, and which needed to be investigated.

“In order to preserve the alleged victim, the Brazilian national team and the CBF… the athlete has been dismissed from the Seleçao,’’ the Brazilian federation said in a statement.

The CBF said that the 23-year-old, whose full name is Antony Matheus dos Santos, would be replaced by Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus in the squad for Brazil’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.

Brazilian media had previously reported the allegations made by Antony’s former girlfriend of physical assault.

According to the sports portal Globoesporte, the case was already the subject of a police investigation when Antony was called up to the squad.

But the content of some of the allegations had not yet been made public.

The player again denied the allegations on Instagram on Monday.

Five-time world champions Brazil would face Bolivia in Belém on Friday and Peru in Lima on Tuesday in their opening qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

West Ham midfielder Paqueta investigated over bets

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta is reportedly being investigated by the FA for betting on games.

BBC Sport says the investigation involves betting in Brazil on yellow cards received by Paqueta. The probe is also involving FIFA.

Speaking on Friday, Brazil’s interim coach Fernando Diniz said: “Paqueta was on the list, he’s a player I like a lot. It’s a time for him to resolve these issues.

“People need time to sort these issues out. He’s a player I love, I have the best impressions of him.”

Paqueta is a confirmed target for Manchester City and Sky Sports says he insists he had not placed any bets himself and was shocked by the reports.

  • Global wealth projected to rise 38% by 2027, despite recent decline – Study

Global wealth projected to rise 38% by 2027, despite recent decline – Study

Global wealth, as measured in personal holdings of assets from real estate to stocks and shares, is projected to rise 38 percent by 2027, driven largely by emerging markets, a study published by Credit Suisse and UBS showed on Tuesday.

The annual Global Wealth Report, which estimates the wealth holdings of 5.4 billion adults across 200 markets, says global wealth will reach $629 trillion over the next five years.

The upbeat outlook comes despite 2022 recording the first fall in net global household wealth since the 2008 global financial crisis.

In nominal terms, net private wealth dipped 2.4 percent last year, with the loss concentrated in more prosperous regions such as North America and Europe, the report showed. A stronger US dollar was a big factor.

The largest wealth increases last year were recorded for Russia, Mexico, India and Brazil. The report forecast wealth in emerging economies, including the BRICS countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will rise 30 percent by 2027.

It expects the further increases in emerging markets to contribute to a reduction in global wealth inequality in the coming years.

The largest declines last year came from financial assets, as opposed to non-financial assets such as real estate, which remained resilient.

Broken down on an individual basis, this meant adults were $3,198 worse off by the end of last year.

However, “global median wealth, arguably a more meaningful indicator of how the typical person is faring, did in fact increase by 3 percent in 2022 in contrast to the 3.6 percent fall in wealth per adult,” the report said.

Median wealth has seen a five-fold increase this century, largely due to rapid wealth growth in China.

2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Brazil booted out of competition

Brazil’s senior female national team has been booted out of the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by the island nations of  New Zealand and Australia.

The Canaries of Brazil became the most high-profile country to be eliminated from the competition.

Brazil played out a goalless draw with Jamaica in their last group F encounter.

The draw against Jamaica ensured the Canaries failed to qualify for the Knock out stage first time in the tournament’s history.

France finished first in the group after winning two and drawing just one while Jamaica came second after amassing two five points.

The other teams who have been sent packing from the tournament include co-hosts New Zealand, the Philippines, Olympic champions Canada, The Republic of Ireland and Zambia.

Others are Costa Rica, China, Haiti, Portugal, Vietnam, Panama, Italy, Argentina and South Korea.
  • Four Nigerians survived 14 days on a ship’s rudder

Four Nigerians survived 14 days on a ship’s rudder

Four Nigerian stowaways crossing the Atlantic in a tiny space above the rudder of a cargo ship ran out of food and drink.

They survived another four days, according to their account, by drinking the sea water crashing just meters below them, before being rescued by Brazilian federal police in the southeastern port of Vitoria.

“It was a terrible experience for me,” said 38-year-old Thankgod Opemipo Matthew Yeye, one of the four Nigerians, in an interview at a Sao Paulo church shelter. “On board it is not easy. I was shaking, so scared. But I’m here.

The four men said they had hoped to reach Europe and were shocked to learn they had in fact landed on the other side of the Atlantic, in Brazil. Two of the men have since been returned to Nigeria upon their request, while Yeye and Roman Ebimene Friday, a 35-year-old from Bayelsa state, have applied for asylum in Brazil

“I pray the government of Brazil will have pity on me,” said Friday, who had already attempted to flee Nigeria by ship once before but was arrested by authorities there.

Both men said economic hardship, political instability and crime had left them with little option but to abandon their native Nigeria. Africa’s most populous country has longstanding issues of violence and poverty, and kidnappings are endemic.

Yeye, a pentecostal minister from Lagos state, said his peanut and palm oil farm was destroyed by floods this year, leaving him and his family homeless. He hopes they can now join him in Brazil.

Friday said his journey to Brazil began on June 27, when a fisherman friend rowed him up to the stern of the Liberian-flagged Ken Wave, docked in Lagos, and left him by the rudder. To his surprise, he found three men already there, waiting for the ship to depart. Friday said he was terrified. He had never met his new shipmates and feared they could toss him into the sea at any moment.

Once the ship was moving, Friday said the four men made every effort not to be discovered by the ship’s crew, who they also worried might offer them a watery grave.

“Maybe if they catch you they will throw you in the water,” he said. “So we taught ourselves never to make a noise.”

Spending two weeks within spitting distance of the Atlantic Ocean was perilous.

To prevent themselves from falling into the water, Friday said the men rigged up a net around the rudder and tied themselves to it with a rope. When he looked down, he said he could see “big fish like whales and sharks.” Due to the cramped conditions and the noise of the engine, sleep was rare and risky. “I was very happy when we got rescued,” he said.

Father Paolo Parise, a priest at the Sao Paulo shelter, said he had come across other cases of stowaways, but never one so dangerous. Their journey paid testament to lengths people will go in search of a new start, he said. “People do unimaginable and deeply dangerous things.”

  • Japa: Six Nigerian stowaways rescued off Brazil, Canary Islands

Japa: Six Nigerian stowaways rescued off Brazil, Canary Islands

Four stowaways were discovered and rescued by crew members off the southeast coast of Brazil, after spending a harrowing 13 days concealed in a compartment on top of the rudder of a Liberia-flagged ship that embarked from Lagos, Nigeria.

The federal police confirming their safe retrieval said on Tuesday that the ship left Lagos on June 27 and the four stowaways had hidden in a compartment located in a submerged section of the ship.

Upon discovery, the four men, who claimed to be Nigerians, were found to be in good health and well-fed, but lacked documentation to confirm their nationality.

A police official told AFP, “The men rescued claim to be Nigerians, but they did not carry any documents confirming their origin.”

Meanwhile, in another incident, the Spanish coastguard successfully rescued two Nigerian migrants who had stowed away on the rudder of a ship arriving in the Canary Islands from Togo.

The migrants were found and brought to safety on Monday night in the port of Las Palmas and were immediately taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The Guardia Civil police confirmed that the migrants were 19 and 22 years old.

After being released, they were transferred back to the ship responsible for their return to Togo.

The port police tweeted, “The migrants were taken to a hospital. They were later released and were transferred back to the ship, which has to return them to their port of origin.”

Visual evidence shared by the Las Palmas maritime police on Twitter portrayed the precarious situation in which the two stowaways were found.

The images depicted them huddled on the rudder, beneath the ship’s hull and just above the waterline of the MSC Marta.

Investigations revealed that the MSC Marta’s last port before reaching the Spanish archipelago was Lome, the capital of Togo, hinting at the point of origin for the stowaways.

The ship, which had departed from Lagos, Nigeria, on July 2, made a stop in Togo on July 4, indicating that the migrants had remained onboard for at least seven days.

Under Spanish law, stowaways who do not seek asylum must be returned by the ship’s operator to the port of origin.

The Canary Islands, owned by Spain, continue to be a popular yet dangerous route for African migrants attempting to reach Europe, given its geographical proximity and significant maritime traffic in the region.

Athletico Paranaense striker Vitor Roque is a step away from joining Barcelona.

Globo says the move will make Roque the second richest sale in domestic Brazilian football history.

Under pressure from the likes of Manchester United, PSG and Newcastle United, Barca are pushing the boat out to sign Roque.

Barca will pay £40m up front plus a further €13m in commissions to agents and family members.

But it doesn’t end there, as Barca will also pay a further €21m in bonuses to Athletico Paranaense. As such, should Roque fulfill all expectations, Barca will pay a massive €74m.

  • Brazil fan leaves everything to Neymar in will

Brazil fan leaves everything to Neymar in will

Leaving everything you own to a multi-millionaire football player would not be everyone’s idea of a good cause, but one Brazilian fan has just done that.

The anonymous fan could not think of a more deserving recipient of his worldly goods than Neymar Jr. of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

He said that beyond a love for the national team and for Brazil’s football legacy, he identified with Neymar, which led him to officially name the Brazil striker in his will.

“I like Neymar, I identify with him a lot. I also suffer with defamation, I am also very family-oriented and the relationship with his father reminds me a lot of mine with my father, who has passed away,” the fan said in an interview.

“I am not in very good health and, because of that, I really saw that I don’t have anyone to leave my things to… I wouldn’t want the government or relatives I don’t get along with to take my things.”

The 30-year-old added that he had tried unsuccessfully to give his assets to the Brazil international before.

But he pointed out that the will was a legal way to do so and the document was signed by a notary’s office in Porto Alegre.

PSG’s Neymar is one of the world’s best paid sportsmen, with estimated earnings of 85 million dollars for 2023, according to Forbes.

“I know that, above all, he is not greedy, something a bit rare these days,” the fan said.

  • Neymar approaches Barca about shock return

Neymar approaches Barca about shock return

Unsettled PSG superstar Neymar is attempting to engineer a stunning return to Barcelona.

The Brazil captain is prepared to leave Paris this summer and has already had intermediaries sound out Manchester United about any interest. Neymar has also spoken directly with Pep Guardiola, as the Manchester City manager put in a call to him earlier this month.

Sport says a return to Barca is now being explored, with Neymar having quit in 2017 for a world record €223m fee.

While an outright sale cannot be considered by Barca given their Financial Fair Play issues with the LaLiga, a loan deal could be explored.

For their part, PSG management favour Neymar departing this summer.

Int’l Friendly: Mane scores two as Senegal shock Brazil 4-2 in Portugal

Bayern Munich forward,  Sadio Mane scored twice as the Teranga Lions of Senegal defeated Brazil 4-2 in a friendly in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta put Brazil ahead in the 11th minute, before Habib Diallo equalised for Senegal in the 22nd minute.

Brazil defender, Marquinhos scored an own goal in the 52nd minute to give the West Africans the lead while Mane extended their lead three minutes after to put scores at 3-1 .

As well as Paqueta, Brazil’s team at the beginning of the match included Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, Newcastle midfielders Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes and Tottenham forward Richarlison.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s side included Nottingham Forest defender Moussa Niakhate, Chelsea centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy and Watford forward Ismaila Sarr.

It was another blow for Brazil, who have Under-20 manager Ramon Menezes acting as a caretaker coach.

The Brazilian FA (CBF) are still pursuing Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti to be their new coach. The role has been vacant since the resignation of Tite following their World Cup quarter-final exit in December.
