Transfer: Mbeumo to undergo Man Utd medical

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brentford to sign forward Bryan Mbeumo who will complete his medical this weekend.

United have had two offers rejected by Brentford, the second for more than £60M, before coming to an agreement with the Bees on Friday afternoon in a deal that could rise to £70m with £5m of add-ons.

Now, as reported by journalist David Ornstein, Mbeumo will complete his medical this weekend before being announced as a United player much to the delight of fans who have been crying out for reinforcements in attack.

“Bryan Mbeumo expected to undergo medical this weekend ahead of completing transfer from Brentford to Manchester United. Agreement reached between #MUFC & #BrentfordFC today after weeks of negotiations – deal for 25yo worth maximum of £71m.”

he club have their first pre-season friendly against Leeds United in Stockholm on Saturday and Mbeumo is likely to be announced after the game either in the afternoon or on the day after on Sunday.

The 25-year-old is set to become United’s third signing of the summer after completing deals for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha and teenage full-back Diego Leon as the club continues to buy despite the need to sell many of their unwanted assets.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia are currently in what is being called the “bomb squad” who have been kicked out by Amorim as the club attempt to sell them before the season begins. After signing Cunha, Mbeumo and Leon the side must sell some of these unwanted players first or risk going against financial rules.

Amorim says things need to change after Man Utd latest defeat

Ruben Amorim said Manchester United “need to change” after their 4-3 defeat at Brentford.

Kevin Schade scored twice at Gtech Community Stadium as United’s miserable Premier League campaign took another blow, with their winless league run stretching to six matches.

United boss Amorim, whose team beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday, made eight changes to his starting line-up for the clash in west London.

“It was a reflection of our season,” Amorim said after the loss, United’s 16th of the league campaign.

“We started well and controlled well, we suffered with the set pieces and throw-ins so we knew we would struggle against them.

“They (players) have to understand we cannot do this anymore, we know the context of the season and we need to change that.”

Mason Mount scored his first goal of the campaign to put Amorim’s men ahead but a Luke Shaw own-goal and Schade’s first meant the hosts led at the break.

Schade’s got his second with a close-range header from Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery, before Yoane Wissa made it 4-1 from six yards out.

United showed more grit than previous weeks however, rallying with Alejandro Garnacho’s 82nd-minute goal and Amad Diallo’s stoppage-time effort.

On Mount, Amorim added: “It’s not just the finish, it’s the position he has on the pitch, he’s a third midfielder who can reach the box, he’s really intelligent and he’s getting there.

“He trains really hard, sometimes too hard and I have to pull him back and take him off the pitch because he wants to do more. He wants to play more minutes and I’m really happy with him.”

Victory for the Bees represents a second win in three days after their 2-0 win at Champions League hopefuls Nottingham Forest on Thursday.

“It was a very good performance, we were in control from minute one,” boss Thomas Frank said.

“We were on top, pressed aggressively, we produced a lot of crosses and two of our goals were fantastic.

“I’m very happy with the performance and it was a deserved win…against Man United who are a massive club.”

Wissa late strike earn Brentford draw at Arsenal

Yoane Wissa scored late in the second half as Brentford and Arsenal played out a drab draw that leaves the second-placed Gunners 10 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta made five changes from the side that so impressively beat Real Madrid 3-0 in midweek in the Champions League, and the game at Emirates Stadium lacked quality from the off.

It took until the 20th minute for the first effort on target when Kristoffer Ajer had a shot saved by David Raya when Bryan Mbeumo played him into the area.

Arsenal thought they had taken the lead minutes later when Kieran Tierney headed in Ethan Nwaneri’s cross, but a video assistant referee (VAR) check showed the left-back was clearly offside.

Leandro Trossard had the Gunners’ first effort on target just before the break when his low drive was pushed away by Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal.

Thomas Partey then scored the opening goal in the 61st minute after excellent work from Declan Rice. The England midfielder carried the ball from deep in his own half and set up Partey who shot powerfully past Flekken.

Brentford equalised 13 minutes later when Nathan Collins headed a ball back into the Arsenal area for Wissa to cleverly turn the ball into the net.

Liverpool can move 13 points clear when they host West Ham on Sunday, but Arsenal’s focus now moves to their Champions League second leg in Madrid on Wednesday.

  • Late Darwin Nunez goals give Liverpool victory at Brentford

Late Darwin Nunez goals give Liverpool victory at Brentford

Substitute Darwin Nunez scored a late double to guide Liverpool to victory at Brentford and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points.

It looked like Liverpool’s wait for a league win in 2025 was going to stretch to three games until Nunez stepped up in stoppage time.

Nunez grabbed the opener in the 91st minute with a simple finish from close range after meeting a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Uruguay forward scored again two minutes later, showing patience in a crowded area to round off a counter-attack as Brentford were caught short in defence.

Despite taking so long to break the deadlock, Liverpool had dominated possession and territory for large periods and were fully deserving of all three points.

Dominik Szoboszlai saw an effort crash off the top of the crossbar in the first half and Luis Diaz should have made better of an attempt with his head after emerging unmarked at the far post.

Brentford were happy to sit deep and soak up pressure but struggled to pose any serious threat on the counter, with striker Bryan Mbeumo left isolated.

Liverpool maintained complete control of the tempo in the latter stages as Brentford dropped ever deeper, but lacked the potency in front of goal which they oozed in the first half of the season until Nunez delivered the decisive blows.

Victory gives the league leaders further breathing space over second-placed Arsenal, who face Aston Villa, while Brentford stay 11th.

  • Arteta reacts as Arsenal win first match of 2025 to close gap on Liverpool

Arteta reacts as Arsenal win first match of 2025 to close gap on Liverpool

Arsenal showed they can cope without the injured Bukayo Saka as they began the year in style by recovering from an early sucker-punch to beat Brentford 3-1 away from home.

The result ensured that they moved back into second place in the English Premier League on Wednesday.

Forward Saka, arguably Arsenal’s most influential player this season, has been ruled out for at least two months after hamstring surgery, dealing a blow to the club’s title hopes.

A visit to a Brentford side who have been impressive at home this season felt like a must-win game for Arsenal.

However, things began badly as Bryan Mbeumo gave his side a 13th minute lead with the home side’s first attack.

Arsenal did not panic, though, and Gabriel Jesus continued his recent resurgence to equalise before halftime.

Mikel Arteta’s side came out firing in the second half and Mikel Merino put them ahead five minutes after the restart after Brentford failed to deal with a corner.

Three minutes later Gabriel Martinelli produced a clinical volleyed finish to put Arsenal in complete control.

The victory lifted Arsenal above Chelsea and Nottingham Forest with 39 points from 19 games with leaders Liverpool on 45 from 18.

Injury-hit Brentford’s second home defeat of the season left them in 12th spot with 24 points from 19 games.

Defeat would have left Arsenal nine points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand, but the way they reacted to going behind suggests they can still be a factor in the title race.

Arteta will also have been impressed with 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri after handing him a first Premier League start.

“I think the team showed a lot of composure. To keep insisting, keep attacking them,” Arteta, whose side are unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions, said.

“We can only win our next match and see what happens. It’s not in our hands, but what is in our hands we need to make sure we do it.”

Arsenal did not lose a London derby in 2024 and have started off in similar fashion.

They were caught cold, though, when Brentford burst forward in the 13th minute and Mbeumo was given too much space to cut in from the right and fire a shot past David Raya.

Raya was almost left red-faced soon after when he allowed a Mbeumo shot to burst through his gloves but he managed to race back and claw the ball off the line.

It proved a pivotal moment as less than a minute later Brentford were guilty of failing to clear the ball and it eventually arrived for Thomas Partey to fire a shot that was parried by Mark Flekken and Jesus dived to head in the rebound.

It was the Brazilian’s sixth goal in his last four games for Arsenal in all competitions, as many as in his previous 48 games for the club.

“I keep working and everyone at the club can tell how I work every day, not just me but everyone. I don’t give up and it is not easy to play for a big club like Arsenal,” Jesus said.

Arsenal’s efficiency from set-pieces was evident again early in the second half when a corner caused chaos in the area and Merino was able to fire home a loose ball.

Martinelli gave the visitors breathing space with a superb finish when the ball came out to him on the edge of the box.

  • Arteta admits Arsenal was stung by a virus before bashing Brentford 3-1

Arteta admits Arsenal was stung by a virus before bashing Brentford 3-1

Mikel Arteta has admitted that Arsenal’s preparations for their 3-1 win at Brentford were hampered by a virus that stung his squad.

Several of Arsenal’s stars were struck down by the illness on the eve of the crucial Premier League clash on Wednesday.

German forward Kai Havertz was sent home with the bug, while England midfielder Declan Rice was only able to come off the bench in the second half.

Martin Odegaard reportedly struggled with the virus ahead of kick-off and although he was able to start, the Arsenal captain made a mistake that led to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener and was replaced in the second half.

But the Gunners recovered impressively at the Gtech Community Stadium as they ignored the illness outbreak to climb back into the title race.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino, and Gabriel Martinelli ensured Arsenal would not be derailed.

“It affected players on the pitch and off the pitch,” Arteta said after second-placed Arsenal moved within six points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

“It is nothing serious. But it wasn’t the ideal situation. In relation to the symptoms, with Kai it was obvious. He wasn’t feeling well at all. He had very clear symptoms so stay away from it, put him in a car, and go back to London.

These things happen. In this period, there are always things thrown at you, infections, viruses, so I try to delay the line-up as late as possible because you can get up in the morning and unfortunately have a surprise like this.”

Arteta is hopeful the virus will have abated for his side’s trip to Brighton on Saturday.

  • EPL: Brentford a difficult test – Chelsea boss, Maresca

EPL: Brentford a difficult test – Chelsea boss, Maresca

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca expects a massive test today against Brentford.

Maresca admits he’s an admirer of Thomas Frank’s work with the Bees.

“I don’t know (Thomas Frank) personally but I’ve known about him and his team for many years,” Maresca said ahead of tonight’s clash.

“He is doing a fantastic job, the way they achieve points, the way they play, the style they have, it is top, fantastic.

“So it’s difficult and, as I said after Tottenham, we will need our fans behind us because it will be a very tough game, one that can be decided by tiny details. We will need to pay attention.

“The good thing about Brentford is they can play in many different styles, they don’t have one way to play. They can play with a back four, a back five, or a back four making a back five with one of the wingers. So it’s quite complicated and we will have to try to do our best (to win).”

Transfer: Super Eagles player seals move to Augsburg

Brentford and Nigeria’s Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Frank Onyeka has transferred from the English Premier League (EPL) to German Bundesliga.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Onyeka sealed the move to FC Augsburg based in Augsburg, Germany from Brentford on Friday.

The Nigeria international has made 78 competitive appearances since joining Brentford from Midtjylland in the summer of 2021.

However, Onyeka was restricted to 13 starts in 28 matches last season and has had to settle for substitute appearances in Brentford’s first two league games of the new campaign.

According to The Athletic, Augsburg have reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Onyeka on a season-long loan deal.

There was a belief that the Bees were holding out for a permanent transfer, but have seemingly adjusted their stance at this late stage of the transfer window.

Augsburg will not have the option to buy Onyeka and they are now finalising negotiations before they can unveil Onyeka as their latest addition.

The midfielder still has three years left to run on his Brentford contract, with an option for the club to extend by a further year.

I’ll move to Madrid – Ivan Toney

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has said he prefers a move to La Liga side Real Madrid.

Toney also hopes for a big end of the season and a place in England’s Euros squad.

On his targets, he told Sky Sports: “We start winning games. We win every game from now for the rest of the season.

“I’ve scored 20 goals. We’ve got nine games, or something like that, left, so we’ve kept nine clean sheets. The job’s a good’un.”

Then on the summer, he replied: “I’m in the mix for the Euros and we win the Euros.”

Toney ends, saying: “If Brentford were to sell me, they make their money, I’ll move to Madrid, then it’s all good.”
