EPL: Disasi rescues point for struggling Chelsea

Axel Disasi scored a late header to rescue a point for Chelsea at Brentford in the Premier League.

Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken gave away a cheap corner and his side were punished as Disasi rose to head in Cole Palmer’s cross with seven minutes remaining.

Yoane Wissa scored a sensational acrobatic volley to put Brentford 2-1 in front, but they could not hold on for the three points.

Sergio Reguilon’s cross into the box was headed away before Frank Onyeka flicked the ball up and Wissa contorted his body to finish superbly.

Nicolas Jackson had earlier opened the scoring for the away side in the first half before Mads Roerslev equalised soon after the break.

He posted on Instagram (now deleted): “@DeclanRice. What a game [heart eyes emoji].”

  • EPL: Why we lost 2-0 to Brentford at Stamford Bridge – Pochettino

EPL: Why we lost 2-0 to Brentford at Stamford Bridge – Pochettino

Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has given detailed explanation why his team lost 2-0 against Brentford in Saturday’s Premier League tie.

Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo scored one goal apiece to give the visitors the maximum points at Stamford Bridge.

However, speaking at his post-match press conference, the former Tottenham Hotspur coach said Chelsea were not clinical in front of goal against the visitors, adding that the Blues failed to score after the first half.

“After the first half we should score and we should. If you don’t score you should blame yourself,” Pochettino said.

“We were not clinical. Sometimes you need luck and after for sure the game changed in the second half. We cannot concede this type of goal.”

Chelsea will now tackle Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Manchester United secure late win against Brentford

Scott McTominay scored twice in stoppage time as Manchester United came from behind to record a sensational Premier League victory against Brentford at Old Trafford.

United were staring at a third successive home league loss for the first time since 1977 thanks to Mathias Jensen’s first-half effort.

McTominay was only brought on with three minutes remaining as manager Erik ten Hag desperately searched for salvation – and the Scot duly provided it.

He showed excellent control before firing home when Kristoffer Ajer scuffed a clearance inside his own box for the first.

Then, after Anthony Martial had a low shot saved by Thomas Strakosha, McTominay reacted quickest to a Harry Maguire flick-on and applied the priceless finish.

The home fans celebrated long after the final whistle as their team headed round on a lap of honour, which was probably a bit extreme but, given the circumstances, totally understandable.

  • EPL: Liverpool, Brighton, Brentford record massive winnings on match day two

EPL: Liverpool, Brighton, Brentford record massive winnings on match day two

Liverpool beat Bournemouth at home and in front of their own fans to earn their first three points at home in the Premier League.

A nightmare start for Liverpool saw them concede just minutes into the game, with Antoine Semenyo taking advantage of some slack play from the hosts’ defense to put Bournemouth ahead.

Nerves inside Anfield weren’t exactly eased as an out-of-sorts Liverpool continued to make mistakes in its own half, but Luis Díaz’s acrobatic  strike helped to settle things down just before the half-hour mark as the Reds finally began to find their way into the game.

And they found themselves ahead shortly after, with Mohamed Salah turning home on the rebound from the penalty spot after Dominik Szoboszlai was tripped.

Alexis Mac Allister’s red card threatened to derail things in the second half, but Liverpool came up with the perfect response, almost immediately making it 3-1 through Diogo Jota to secure a first win of the new season.

Meanwhile somewhere at the Molineux, Wolves recorded its second straight losses after losing to Brighton and Hove Albion at home.

Mitoma opened the flood gate of goals when he dribbled past four Wolves defender before slotting the ball past the goal keeper for the Visitors opening game.

Estupinan doubled the visitors’ lead right from the restart as Sa pushed aside Danny Welbeck’s shot from the edge of the box, but straight to Mitoma, who set up Estupinan for a simple finish.

A quickfire Solly March double at the start of the second half helped fire Brighton to a resounding 4-1 win at Wolves as Roberto De Zerbi’s side began life without Moises Caicedo in style.

Eventually Wolves got a consolation goal when Hwang’s looping beat Brighton’s  goalie.

At Craven Cottage, Yoane Wissa’s opener and Bryan Mbeumo’s double gave Brentford a comfortable 3-0  win over west London rivals Fulham, who were reduced to 10 men when captain  Tim Ream got the marching order after infringing on a Brentford attacker in the 64th minute of the encounter.

EPL: Brentford stun Tottenham in away win

A superb double from Bryan Mbeumo helped Brentford come from behind to win and spoil Tottenham’s final home game of a miserable season.

Mbeumo struck two fine efforts into the far corner early in the second half, before team-mate Yoane Wissa capped things off, as Brentford overturned Tottenham’s first-half lead which had come via captain Harry Kane.

Just days after strike partner Ivan Toney was banned for eight months for breaking Football Association betting rules, Mbeumo showed Brentford fans they can count on him to deliver the goals.

It had been a moment of magic from Kane, whose future at Spurs remains in question, when he curled the ball beautifully into the top corner from a free-kick.

It galvanised his team-mates and they played with confidence and flair, creating numerous chances which they should have put away.

Their lack of ruthlessness was punished though as Brentford responded immediately in the second half – Mbeumo taking his chances, firing past goalkeeper Fraser Forster twice in 12 minutes.

Any chance of a late equaliser by Tottenham evaporated when substitute Shandon Baptise robbed Oliver Skipp of possession and Mbeumo teed up Wissa for a comfortable finish.

It was another performance which summed up Tottenham’s season – moments of promise before a crushing result.

Their extremely slim hope of European qualification is fading rapidly, while Brentford know they will finish a successful season inside the Premier League’s top 10.

  • EPL: Klopp hails Salah after Liverpool’s win over Brentford

EPL: Klopp hails Salah after Liverpool’s win over Brentford

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian striker’s winner against Brentford on Saturday set a number of milestones.

The win kept the Reds in the hunt for UEFA Champions League football next season.

Salah struck from close range in the 13th minute to score for the ninth home game in a row, making it to 30 goals this season.

It was also a century of goals for the Egyptian at Liverpool’s iconic stadium since he joined from Italian Serie A side AS Roma in 2017.

“I think as an offensive player, you need to have this desire to score goals, but a lot of people forget how many goals he sets up.

“So, he’s just always, very, very often involved in the goals,” Klopp told reporters after Liverpool’s 1-0 English Premier League (EPL) win.

“A lot of other players don’t appreciate people enough when they are still playing, and for us, it’s clear he’s an all-time great,” Klopp added.

His side are fifth on the table and still in with an outside chance of making it to the UEFA Champions League next season.

They need to keep winning just in case anyone above them slips up.

“It’s probably a little bit more exciting than a few teams wanted for us. It’s good that we could get into that region of the table again.

“But we have to make sure that we keep (an eye on) the teams behind us … nothing is decided,” the Liverpool manager said as the season approaches its climax.

“We have three games to go and then, finally, a bit of a longer break, which is very helpful.

“You could see that today —– Brentford had a full week in between their games. We played three days ago.

“It’s a massive difference, especially in the latter stages of the game, (but) the boys got through it, and I’m really happy about it,” Klopp said.

  • EPL: Wolves compound Chelsea’s woes, Newcastle beat Brentford to reclaim 3rd position

EPL: Wolves compound Chelsea’s woes, Newcastle beat Brentford to reclaim 3rd position

It was a bad day  for Frank Lampard on his second coming as interim manager as Chelsea football club again failed to secure three maximum points as they surrendered to the superior firepower of Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.

Matheus Nunes screamer in the 31st minute made the difference in the thrilling encounter.

Chelsea huffed and puffed in the second half but failed to test Jose Sa in the Wolves’ goal.

The result left Chelsea 11th on the log as they have only managed to win just four games in almost 21 matches in the EPL.

Meanwhile,Brentford’s Ivan Toney converted the second penalty of the game to put his side ahead after missing the first one and seeing  his goal  chalked off for offside.

They were run away winners at halftime.

However, Newcastle rallied back  after the restart and turned the game with two goals in six minutes, courtesy of Alexander Isak and David Raya’s unfortunate own goal.

As a result of their fifth straight Premier League win, the Magpies went back third, level on points with Manchester United, though with a vastly-superior goal difference.

Brentford, meanwhile, have won just one of their last five league games, which will not help their outside chances of European qualification.

  • Arsenal Vs Brentford: VAR Referee, Mason recommended for sack

Arsenal Vs Brentford: VAR Referee, Mason recommended for sack

Former Premier League referee, Keith Hackett, has called on Lee Mason to be sacked after it was discovered that he made an error leading to Brentford’s goal in the game versus Arsenal.

Mason failed to sufficiently investigate the controversial goal that saw the Bees equalize at the Emirates.

Leandro Trossard had put the league leaders in front before Ivan Toney headed home from close range to equalize for Brentford.

But replays showed Christian Norgaard was offside when he headed the ball back across for Toney to score.

The goal was allowed to stand despite a lengthy VAR check which lasted more than three minutes.

Hackett, who refereed in the Premier League for almost 20 years, has now advised new PGMOL chief Howard Webb to fire Mason.

He said: “Howard Webb is now in charge of the PGMOL. One of the first things he should do is dismiss permanent VAR operator Lee Mason.

“This weekend, Mason lets another referee down by not disallowing the Brentford goal for offside. These are decisions that VAR should get right.”
