EPL: Ivan Toney dents Arsenal title hopes

Substitute Leandro Trossard scored his first goal for Arsenal but the Premier League leaders missed the chance to move eight points clear at the top as Ivan Toney earned resilient Brentford a deserved point.

After a goalless first half in which the Bees hit the woodwork through Toney, the Gunners took the lead when Trossard struck at the back post four minutes after coming off the bench.

But Brentford got the reward their excellent away performance at Emirates Stadium deserved when Toney nodded in Christian Norgaard’s cross from close range.

There was a lengthy check by the video assistant referee for a possible offside in the build-up but the goal was eventually confirmed.

Arsenal raised the tempo in the closing stages – including seven minutes of added time – as they searched for a winner but Brentford completed an excellent all-round defensive display by holding firm for a point.

Arsenal face Manchester City – six points behind before their game on Sunday afternoon against Aston Villa – in a top-of-the table showdown on 15 February.

Brentford, meanwhile, are eighth and just five points off fifth place.

EPL: Why we defeated Liverpool – Brentford manager, Thomas Frank

Brentford manager, Thomas Frank has revealed the winning tactics his boys employed to defeat Liverpool 3-1 in the Premier League tie on Monday night.

Frank said that Brentford defeated Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium because of his players’ attitude, effort, hard work and togetherness.

The 49-year-old Danish gaffer watched The Bees defeat Jurgen Klopp’s side at home, thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate (own-goal), Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.

Liverpool’s only goal was scored by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the encounter.

Liverpool French defender, Ibrahim Konate had a bad day in office after conceding an own goal and being responsible for the 3rd goal against Liverpool.

“What a night! I can’t praise the players enough, they are incredible.

“The attitude, effort, hard work and togetherness – everything they put together to beat a team like Liverpool,” Frank told BBC Sport.

All Brentford goal except the last came from set pieces in the encounter.

Both Liver pool and Brentford had goals ruled out for offside.

Liverpool boss Klopp slams referee after Brentford defeat

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has slammed match officials and Brentford’s tactics after last night’s defeat in the Premier League fixture.

Klopp was unhappy about the “pushing” and “holding” inside the box leading to the opening goal and in another case where Yoane Wissa saw another strike disallowed from a corner.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “Of course I’m not 100 percent happy, I will have to watch it back again and again because the two corners where they scored, one of them was offside or whatever it was, and then the other one, of course, we don’t behave perfectly.

“But they are stretching the rules in this moment, they are pushing, holding and everything and the refs, that’s obviously what you can do, that’s why it’s really difficult and we could have done better.

“The third goal, I have no clue how he can only not whistle for a foul in that situation where the defender has been given a push in the back. You lose control and you go down, then they hide behind the phrase ‘it’s not clear and obvious.’ These are the situations, he has to explain that, if somebody were to ask him.”

He added: “We had a meeting before the season where they told us not the foul on Ibou, but the behaviour in the box, the refs will whistle, but unfortunately they don’t do it. Do I expect it? I don’t expect anything in our favour, I just think a foul is a foul, holding is holding and pushing is pushing.

“That’s a few things that are allowed and then not allowed, and refs see them, they whistle for it, if they don’t then they cannot whistle for it, that’s how it is.

“Maybe there’s a reason why they are so successful from set pieces but still concede a lot of defensive goals around set pieces, because there you cannot do the same stuff because it would be a penalty. That’s why they do well, but there are some rules and that’s what you have to see.”

EPL: The Bees sting Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad

Manchester City tasted its first home defeat of the season by losing 1-2 to visiting Brentford.

Ivan Toney put his England snub behind him by scoring twice, including an injury-time winner, to give Brentford a memorable 2-1 victory at Manchester City.

WorldCup bound Phil Foden leveled things up in the dying minute of the first half but Ivan Toney ensured Brentford were runaway winners in the encounter.

The Brentford captain delivered the perfect response to missing out on Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad for Qatar to stun the reigning champions.

The Bees as Brentford is fondly called is the second EPL side after Liverpool to defeat Manchester City in the current season.

Brentford is the first club side to defeat the two Manchester sides in the current season.

Win, draw, or lose Arsenal will top the table till the new year.

EPL: Why Ethan Nwaneri made Premier League history – Wright

England legendary player and former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, has stated reasons English player of Nigerian descent, 15-year-old Ethan Nwaneri  made history as the youngest player to play in the English Premier League.

Wright said he’s proud” to see 15-year-old Ethan Nwaneri make Premier League history.

Nwaneri  was introduced in the Arsenal versus Brentford game and he impressed.

The youngster broke the record previously held by Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

Wright has now said Arteta’s decision to play Nwaneri sends a “massive message” to the other academy players.

“I’m so proud of that for Arsenal. To get in the team at that stage, some people might think it’s a stunt, but those people – Mikel, Per, Edu – are not putting him in there for a joke.

“They’re not going to bring people in just for the sake of it. They think very highly of him, he was playing for the U18s when he was 14.

“What I think this does is send a massive message to the other academy players and shows them they all have a chance of playing in that first team,” Wright said on Match of the Day.

Nwaneri is still eligible to play for both Nigeria and England at the senior level.

Ronaldo can’t be blamed for Brentford defeat – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has insisted Ronaldo should not be pointed out for defeat to Brentford.

Ten Hag again stated he expects Cristiano Ronaldo to stay.

The Dutchman also was asked today about a deal for Casemiro.

United have struck a €60million deal to sign Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro, who has agreed personal terms with the club.

“No. I cannot tell anything,” Ten Hag replied when asked about Casemiro. Ten Hag again bristled at questions about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo clashed with assistant coach Steve McClaren after Manchester United’s 4-0 meltdown at Brentford.

McClaren was seen urging the Portugal hero to walk over to the furious travelling hordes.

But instead Ronaldo exchanged what seemed curt words with McClaren and quickly headed off the pitch – reluctantly crossing the path of manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo also appeared to duck out of a handshake with Ten Hag as he headed swiftly for the tunnel rather than go to away supporters.

EPL: I take the blame for Manchester United’s loss – De Gea

There were no goals in the second half, as United recorded two successive defeats in the new season.

Manchester United’s poor start to the 2022/23 season has continued with a disappointing 4-0 bashing from Brentford on Saturday.

Red Devils fell behind 4-0 in just 35 minutes of this encounter.

Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo compounded United’s misery with a goal each to make it 4-0 by half-time, which was followed by a goalless second period.

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend, Paul Merson has appeared to mock Manchester United over their recent struggles.

He already wrote Manchester United off before the match was played.
