EPL: Brentford shock Man Utd 0-4 at halftime

Manchester United are 4-0 down at halftime of their Premier League clash at Brentford.

Brentford are just the third side to score four goals against Manchester United in the first half of a Premier League game after Tottenham in October 2020 and Liverpool in October 2021.

Josh Dasilva opened the scoring when his shot slipped through United goalkeeper David de Gea on nine minutes. Mathias Jensen made it two from another De Gea error ten minutes later. Ben Mee and Bryan Mbuemo also struck to send the hosts 4-0 up at halftime.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville remarked: “I thought Manchester United would do better but they have been mauled, bullied, messed about with like you wouldn’t believe and there is nowhere to hide. Brentford are absolutely rampant and brilliant.”

EPL: Brentford fight back to draw at Leicester

Brentford produced a terrific fightback from 2-0 behind to secure a point against Leicester in a thrilling match at the King Power Stadium.

A header by Belgium defender Timothy Castagne opened the scoring for the Foxes, the only Premier League club not to have signed a player in the summer transfer window so far.

Leicester were the dominant side in the first half with Youri Tielemans hitting the post before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall doubled the lead 25 seconds into the second half.

Brentford hit back when Ivan Toney scored from close range after a move that started when Leicester lost possession from a throw-in.

Toney wasted a great chance to equalise when he headed wide after Leicester’s Wesley Fofana nodded against the post at the other end.

But Brentford were not done as substitute Josh Dasilva struck an 86th-minute equaliser after cutting inside on to his left foot, starting the Bees’ second successive season in the top flight with a point.

  • Eriksen makes first start since cardiac arrest at Euro 2020

Eriksen makes first start since cardiac arrest at Euro 2020

Manager Thomas Frank hailed the importance of Brentford’s crucial 3-1 win at Norwich and praised the contribution of key duo Ivan Toney and Christian Eriksen.

On his first start since he suffered a cardiac arrest on June 12 at Euro 2020, Eriksen flourished.

The Dane saw his 32nd-minute corner-kick find its way to Toney at the back post to break the deadlock in Norfolk.

Hat-trick hero Toney took centre stage after half-time with a cool penalty kick after Ben Gibson had caught Bees’ captain Pontus Jansson with a high boot.

He scored another penalty kick in the 58th-minute before Teemu Pukki hit a late consolation.

Frank said: “Of course, (a) very important win. I said to the players before the game (that) ‘for me it was never a must-win game’. I know it is easy to say after, but I knew how important the game was.

“Everyone did, Norwich did, we did and two things that are very important with the win is less noise and the smiles on the faces when we come in on Monday morning will be big. So, that’s a massive thing.

“I am pleased with the players’ character, mentality and coolness in a difficult game.”

Toney’s two penalty kicks made it 18 in a row without missing and took his overall tally for the season to 11 goals in all competitions.

“I think he was not only for the three goals but in general he top performed today,” Frank added.

“You need in a game like this that your top players perform and he did that. First one a well-worked set-piece where he was in the position he had to be and then two penalty kicks.

“The second one he gets himself and I have said many, many times the more penalty kicks he scores, the closer we are to the truth that he is the best penalty kick-taker in the world with the coolness and the strategy.”

Eriksen’s influence was clear to see and he played the whole match on his full debut for the promoted side, who are now six points above the relegation zone.

Frank insisted: “It means something for Christian, he wants to do well for us and make sure we end as high as possible.

“I think he was good but I think he will be even better than this. If you ask him, I am pretty sure he will say he can be even better.

“Fantastic to see him and very important for us, of course he is. I think the delivery for the first goal was fantastic and we saw some of his passes in behind, left first time, right first time.

“He had a fantastic ball to Sergi Canos in the first half —- unbelievable. That is the bit he can give us, 100 per cent.”

Norwich manager Dean Smith bemoaned the decision not to award a penalty kick when Brandon Williams went down in the area.

That was after contact by Bryan Mbeumo in the 47th-minute with the score only 1-0.

“Big moments went against us,” the ex-Brentford manager admitted.

“We didn’t help ourselves in those big moments. For instance, we knew they were a decent set-piece team and Brandon Williams should have defended the far-post much better for the first goal.

“Ben Gibson should not give them a decision to make with a high foot and then he goes to ground.

”But on the flip side there is a big moment in the game where we should have a penalty kick and we were not given a penalty kick.

“I don’t quite understand VAR at the moment and I am not sure anybody can explain it to me. Those big moments change games.”

  • Everyone needs to let Eriksen play football – Brentford coach

Everyone needs to let Eriksen play football – Brentford coach

Brentford boss Thomas Frank believes Christian Eriksen must be allowed to get on with his game.

The Danish international, who suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch last summer at Euro 2020, got a standing ovation from everyone when he came on in the 52nd minute against Newcastle, a game they lost 2-0.

While Frank understands why fans reacted so positively to Eriksen coming onto the pitch, he believes they should now treat him as any other player in the squad.

Frank said: “I completely understand the circumstances which make Christian coming back to football a really big event.

“But now he has played his first game, he really wants to just speak about football and less about what happened in June.

“He wants to be treated like a normal football player — even though we know he will never be a normal football player because of what happened to him.

“For everyone involved in football, it was a big moment. It was fantastic to see the reception he received and it was a big moment for Christian and his family.

“Now he should only talk with his feet and speak about football instead of everything else.”

EPL: Christian Eriksen set for Brentford debut against Newcastle

Christian Eriksen should make his Brentford debut in Saturday’s English Premier League (EPL) match against Newcastle United.

The Denmark international has built up his match fitness in behind-closed-doors fixtures.

He is now in line to make a first competitive appearance since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch at Euro 2020 in June last year.

Bees striker Ivan Toney has recovered from a calf issue, while defenders Mathias Jorgensen (thigh) and Julian Jeanvier (knee) and midfielder Tariqe Fosu (thigh) all remain sidelined.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe hopes to have striker Allan Saint-Maximin available for the trip to west London.

The Frenchman has been in Monaco this week for specialised and intense treatment on the calf injury.

It was an injury which kept him out of last weekend’s 1-1 draw at West Ham and the Magpies will make a late decision on him.

Winger Ryan Fraser has recovered from a hamstring problem and Javier Manquillo’s ankle injury is improving.

But fellow full-back Kieran Trippier (fractured metatarsal), midfielder Matt Ritchie (knee) and striker Callum Wilson (calf) are still out

  • EPL: Liverpool beat Brentford to move second

EPL: Liverpool beat Brentford to move second

Liverpool moved up to second in the Premier League as they overcame a stubborn Brentford side to take all three points at Anfield.

Fabinho’s far-post header eased some of the tension that had built up at Anfield over 43 goalless minutes, but the home fans were relieved when Bryan Mbeumo sliced wide from a fine position after the break.

Shortly afterwards, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain connected with an Andy Robertson cross to double the lead and Takumi Minamino came off the bench to side-foot home a third.

Leaders Manchester City are 11 points above Liverpool, having played a game more.

It will take a spectacular and sudden disintegration in the champions’ form, and a near flawless run-in from Liverpool to reverse those standings by May. City have dropped just 10 points so far this season.

  • NFF in talks with Brentford over Bernardo Cueva

NFF in talks with Brentford over Bernardo Cueva

The Norwegian Football Federation, NFF are in talks with Brentford for coach Bernardo Cueva.

Known as the ‘deadball doctor’, Cueva is wanted by Norway coach Stale Solbakken for their Euro qualifying campaign.

The NFF wish to take Cueva on-loan from Brentford during international games.

Solbakken explained: “He will probably continue.

“We have received a clear signal from Brentford to negotiate with him and hope he will join the next qualifier.

“Brentford had to give up their best expert to (Manchester) City and (Pep) Guardiola. Then Arsenal took their expert number two, and Bernardo came in as number three.”

  • Spurs beat Brentford as Conte unbeaten league start continues

Spurs beat Brentford as Conte unbeaten league start continues

Antonio Conte’s unbeaten league start as Tottenham boss continued as they kept pace with the top four with a comfortable win over a lacklustre Brentford.

A 12th-minute own goal from right wing-back Sergi Canos gave them the lead, before Son Heung-min finished off a scintillating counter-attack in the second half.

The opener came from a Son dinked cross after a short corner, with Pontus Jansson’s clearing header ricocheting off Ben Davies and onto Canos before flying into the roof of the net.

Spurs pressed for more goals, with Son denied from range in the first half, while Harry Kane saw a one-on-one effort well saved by Alvaro Fernandez after the break.

Son got the goal that his performance, and Spurs’ display, deserved when he latched onto Sergio Reguilon’s cross to tap home from six yards.

It was a limp display from Brentford, with their only shot on target in the whole game a tame left-footed effort from Ivan Toney.

Tottenham climb to sixth – two points behind West Ham in fourth – while Brentford slip to 12th.

  • Newcastle go bottom of EPL after six-goal thriller

Newcastle go bottom of EPL after six-goal thriller

Newcastle dropped to the bottom of the Premier League after an entertaining draw with Brentford, with Eddie Howe absent for his first game in charge.

The new head coach was forced to watch the game from his hotel room after testing positive for coronavirus on Friday, with assistant Jason Tindall taking charge from the sidelines.

But, as he settles into his new role a month after the club’s Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, he will have seen a game to give him room for encouragement while also illustrating the size of his task to keep Newcastle in the top flight.

With the home fans signing Howe’s name from the first minute, Newcastle took an early lead when Jamaal Lascelles nodded in from Matt Ritchie’s corner.

But the lead only lasted 75 seconds as Ivan Toney took advantage of Karl Darlow’s mistake to fire in low against his former employers and celebrate in front of the Gallowgate End.

The 25-year-old, who was sold by Newcastle to Peterborough in 2018 after several loan spells, was twice close to scoring again, being caught slightly offside and then having a goalbound shot cleared off the line by Fabian Schar.

But Thomas Frank’s impressive team took the lead after 31 minutes when Sergi Canos’ back-post cross found fellow wing-back Rico Henry, who stabbed a shot past Darlow.

Eight minutes later, Joelinton brought the scores level again, curling into the bottom corner following the lively Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross, for his first goal of the season.

In a thrilling encounter, Brentford went ahead once more when substitute Frank Onyeka’s shot was deflected past Darlow via Lascelles, but Saint-Maximin rescued a point when he crashed in at the back post following a flowing move.

Despite the draw, Newcastle continued their worst start to a league campaign, falling to 20th after Norwich earned their second win of the season, while Thomas Frank’s Brentford ended a run of four top-flight defeats.

EPL: We’re here to give Chelsea a good game – Brentford coach

Brentford manager Thomas Frank insists they face Chelsea tomorrow night as rank underdogs.

Frank has reminded everyone that on the day they were winning promotion to the Premier League, Chelsea were beating Manchester City in the Champions League final.

“This is the big picture of the difference between our clubs,” said the Dane.

“But we are here to be an addition to the Premier League, and the best way to do that is by bidding, pushing and trying to attack them. We will try to do that as much as possible on Saturday.

“It is a team with the highest quality and world-class players in all positions. They have one of the best coaches in the world and I do not think there is a weak point. But we love that challenge and we can’t wait.”
