Brentford come from behind twice to hold Liverpool

Yoane Wissa scored a late equaliser as Brentford held Liverpool to a draw in a thrilling encounter at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Wissa’s dinked finish over Alisson rescued a point for the hosts, who matched Jurgen Klopp’s team for long spells and created enough opportunities to claim all three points.

Ethan Pinnock had given Thomas Frank’s side a deserved early lead, poking home from close range after Ivan Toney flicked Sergi Canos’ low cross into the defender’s path.

Diogo Jota brought the visitors level just three minutes later, rising unmarked to head Jordan Henderson’s looping cross into the corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

Mohamed Salah’s 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool put the Reds ahead for the first time in the match, only for Vitaly Janelt to equalise once more after Pontus Jansson had rattled the crossbar.

Curtis Jones restored the visitors’ lead with a long-range drive that took a wicked deflection off Kristoffer Ajer on its way in, but Brentford – and Wissa – had the last word.

    EPL: 10-man Brentford defeat Wolverhampton

Brentford claimed their first win on the road in the Premier League with a comfortable victory over Wolves at Molineux.

The newly-promoted London side, who arrived in the west Midlands with an unbeaten away record, took a first-half lead with a well-struck Ivan Toney penalty.

The Bees forward then turned provider to shrug off the challenge of Max Kilman and find strike partner Bryan Mbeumo at the back post for his first top-flight goal.

Wolves have failed to score in their opening three league defeats at home, and they did not register a shot on target in the west Midlands sunshine, despite having more possession.

Adama Traore’s physicality and speed was a constant threat, and substitute Hwang Hee-chan impressed again on only his second appearance, but manager Bruno Lage will be concerned by his side’s lack of cutting edge.

The only negative for Brentford was the loss of Shandon Baptiste for a needless second yellow card, five minutes after his first, after he hauled down Francisco Trincao after losing possession.

Thomas Frank’s side climb to ninth in the table and face high-flying Liverpool in their next league outing, while Wolves slip to 14th with a trip to Southampton to follow.

Patrick Vieira earns first point as Crystal Palace manager

Brentford maintained an unbeaten start to their first Premier League season with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles had the better of the chances in Patrick Vieira’s first home game in charge, with debutant Conor Gallagher hitting the inside of the post early on.

Captain James McArthur then saw a curling effort from the edge of the box tipped away by David Raya after the break as the Eagles pushed for a breakthrough.

The best opportunity for Thomas Frank’s Brentford, who beat Arsenal in their opening game last weekend, came when Bryan Mbeumo’s free-kick from out wide clipped the top of the crossbar.

Arsenal forced to pay €1m after Brentford defeat

Arsenal’s defeat at Brentford not only cost three points – but also €1m.

Globoesport reports as part of the package that saw the defender join the club from Flamengo in June 2020, the Brazilian club have a series of appearance-related add-ons.

They report that as he chalked up his 20th appearance for the club, a clause was triggered, leaving Arsenal with a bill of €1m (£850,000).

The payments won’t stop there however, the article adds that Flamengo are in line for another million for every 10 appearances he registers, up to a total of €8m.

Those clauses, along with an additional payment this summer in the region of €5m could see the total outlay reach €16m before his contract expires.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank says fans in attendance will never forget last night’s victory over Arsenal.

The Bees beat the Gunners 2-0 on the opening night of the Premier League as Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard found the net at a buoyant Brentford Comunity Stadium.

And Frank said: “Everyone who was in the stadium today will never forget this. I am proud to be part of that.

“I have such a big belief in this school of players, this team. I just had this feeling that I would be disappointed if we didn’t beat them (Arsenal).

“I think we deserved to win the game. The fans were electric, they created an unbelievable atmosphere.

“Maybe we had 100 fans outside of west London. Now maybe we have few more?

“It was a historical evening and it is crazy we opened the Premier League season with a win over Arsenal.

“Tonight we need to celebrate and be proud, and I will get my glass of wine or two.”

Midtjyllands chief proud of Onyeka move to Brentford

FC Midtjyllands sports chief Svend Graversen has explained selling Frank Onyeka to Brentford.

The midfielder’s move to the Bees was confirmed this morning.

Graversen said, “Frank is the example of another fantastic story about the collaboration between our academy in Nigeria, the academy in Ikast and the Superliga team. He has taken the whole journey, where he started as a striker and was quickly retrained as a midfielder.

“It has been inspiring to see how he fought his way into the first team and has since made an extraordinary impression on the Super League the last few years. We are incredibly proud of that.”

Graversen is sure that he can develop even more with Brentford.

“It is a happy story for the whole of FC Midtjylland to be able to send a really good football player and not least a really nice young man on to new challenges. There are many in the club who have had something to do with Frank and had an impact on his development. It ranges from coaches, managers and teammates to his foster family, and he has been well-liked by all.

“We are of course sad to lose Frank, but on the other hand we also encourage him to come out and unleash the huge potential he has. We look forward to following him in the Premier League, and we are confident that he can develop even more and become a profile in Brentford and on the Nigerian national team.”
