Husband refuses to take back bride price from wife after divorce

A man, Yahaya Saleh, on Friday refused to collect the bride price he earlier paid for his wife as ordered by a Grade 1 Area Court in Lugbe, Abuja.

The court on Friday dissolved the marriage between Saleh and his wife, Rabi, and ordered the wife to return the bride price.

However, Saleh who lives in Jedo Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, told the court that he would not collect back the bride price because he had children with his estranged wife.

He said that the marriage was consummated under Islamic Law and was blessed with two children, the first being four years old and the second, two years old.

Delivering judgment earlier, the judge, Saleh Ramat, had dissolved the marriage on the grounds of Saleh’s lack of care for Rabi, adding that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

Rabbi had in her petition, filed before the court, alleged that her husband had not been taking care of her and their two children throughout their 6-year old marriage.

“My husband does not care about our health. Whenever the children or me are sick, he doen’t show care.

“I have been the one feeding the family, caring for their health and all other needs.

“I want the court to dissolve the marriage. I have no love for my husband again,” she had told the court.

  • Disrespecting wife over bride price is shallow mindset-Don Jazzy

Disrespecting wife over bride price is shallow mindset-Don Jazzy

Renowned music producer and showbiz mogul, Don Jazzy, has condemned the way some men treat their wife because of the bride price they paid to secure her hand in marriage.

The outspoken entertainer noted that , disrespecting one’s wife because of the bride price paid is a shallow mindset.

Don Jazzy however did not specify whether the disrespect from such men is as a result of the amount demanded from them before they got married to their wife.

The music producer tweeted, “So apparently some of the men that disrespect and treat their wives like sh*t do so becos they paid some useless bride price. Kai, how do we educate the multitude with this shallow mindset?”

A Twitter user, @iam_jaycheqs, whose profile says “women are not properties,” shared her opinion, saying “the bride price tradition needs to go.” According to her, “It holds no water in this modern time and age.”

She added, “What is the purpose? And why won’t a man feel like he owns a person after paying for her?”

She got a response from @oncle_thereal who said, “Like Don said, people need to be educated. Culture should not be lost or sacrificed on the altar of modernization. The culture of paying bride price in itself isn’t wrong or bad. It’s the individual mindset that makes things seem wrong. Hence, educating people better.”

@ItzMimiLSD added that the men Don Jazzy spoke of want their wife to reverence them because of the bride price they paid.

She said, “This set of men actually didn’t grow with love, they have some stupid ego in them, they feel the woman owes them the whole world just bcuz they paid some silly bride price. This is usually common among men who are still struggling to fit into the ‘middle family’.”

She added, “And then they spend lots of money during the marriage rites so they just keep reminding the woman of how much they paid as bride price and the huge amount of money they spent traditionally to the direct family of the bride. They feel the woman should worship them.”

  • My dad demanded impossible bride price from Ojukwu- Bianca

My dad demanded impossible bride price from Ojukwu- Bianca

Ex- beauty queen, Bianca Ojukwu has revealed how her late father required an “impossible bride price” from Odumegwu Ojukwu, her late husband who was the president of the defunct Biafran state.

The diplomat recently took to her social media page to mark the 20th year since after she was married to the late Igbo leader.

In a Facebook post, she noted that her father had asked Ojukwu to pay 100 pre-independence copper coins, an old currency, that made the former Biafran president to dispatch men across the country to hunt for them before their eventual marriage in 2001.

“What a day it was, and full of drama! The bride price was a daunting factor. My father, Chief CC Onoh gave his daughter’s suitor, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu a seemingly impossible task in this respect,” she wrote.

“He demanded a bride price of 100 pre-independence copper coins (those old coins with a hole in the middle) and where could anyone readily find these extremely rare coins, and in such quantity in 2001?

“And so people were dispatched to various parts of the country in search of the old coins. It cost so much more to source the coins than they were actually worth. Years later, when I asked my father what informed his request.”

Bianca added that her dad revealed years later that he made the unusual request to teach Ojukwu to value women.

“He laughed and told me, ‘I had to make it difficult for him. If it were purely a matter of paying money, being a man of great means, he would have been prepared to pay any amount, no matter how huge, as bride price,” she added.

“That would have been easy. But in the course of your marriage, anytime he makes you upset and you threaten to head back home to us, he will remember the difficulty in procuring your bride price!’ Vintage Aninefungwu!

“20 years ago to this day, and I am simply awed by my father’s wisdom. I am extremely privileged to have lived under the shadow of these two great men, valiant men who rode the thunder and quelled the storm.”

On November 26, 2011, Ojukwu died in the United Kingdom after a brief illness.

  • Court dissolves 19-year marriage, orders wife to refund N20,000 bride price

A Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, on Thursday, ordered a divorce seeking housewife, Binta Sani, to pay N20,000 to her estranged husband, Adamu Abdullahi, to free herself from their 19-year marriage.

The Judge, Dahiru Lawal, in his ruling said that since the petitioner requested the divorce, it was mandatory on her to refund the bride price paid on her so as to free herself from the marriage.

He said that Islam gives the woman the right to seek divorce through Khul’i, which is a form of redemption in which the woman returns the bride price paid on her to the husband to secure the divorce.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Binta had earlier told the court that her husband had been ill-treating her and was not ready to continue staying with him.

“I can no longer tolerate him; I want to return his dowry back to him because I am fed up and there is no room for reconciliation,’’ she said.

The respondent, however, told the court that he still loves his wife and pleaded with the court to intervene and save their troubled marriage.

“We have been married for 19 years, and we have five children, I don’t want to divorce my wife, I paid N 8,000 dowry on my wife,’’ he said.

The judge after listening to both parties said that the petitioner had the right in Islam to ask for a divorce.

“In Islam, a woman has the right to seek divorce through Khul’i, when she returns the dowry to her husband.

“However, the judge also has the right to add to the amount of the dowry to enable the husband re-marry.

“I, Dahiru Lawal, judge of Sharia Court I of Magajin Gari hereby confirm the separation of the two parties.

“From now on you are no longer husband and wife and Binta Sani would pay N20,000 to Adamu Abdullahi,’’ he ruled.

According to the police report the cause of the argument was that Mr Candia did not pay the ‘bride price’. Candia said:

The neighbor’s thought that Candia was dead after the vicious attack. Police are currently searching for the woman.

‘Bride price’ is part of the Lugbara culture in Uganda where the man must pay a price for getting married. “Usually, it is the elders to speak about payment of bride price that is done on mutual consent.
