How Manchester United set up FA Cup final against City with Brighton win

Manchester United beat Brighton & Hove Albion in a thrilling penalty kicks shootout after their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday finished 0-0 after extra time.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Manchester United set up an FA Cup final with Manchester City with the win in what will be the first all-Manchester clash in the final.

Solly March, Brighton’s seventh player to step up to the spot in the shootout, launched the ball over the bar.

Victor Lindelof then found the net to secure a 7-6 shootout victory for Manchester United.

“It felt great,” Lindelof said later. “It was a great relief and we’re glad to be in the final.

“I have confidence in myself and I knew which penalty kick I wanted to take and that’s what I did.”

The nail-biting finale was a fitting ending after 120 goalless minutes of wild swings in a game that careened from end to end all night.

The quality of the penalty kicks in a torrential downpour was superb with Manchester United finding the net with all seven of their kicks.

Brighton’s first six efforts were equally impressive until March fired wildly off target.

“They were great penalty kicks,” Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea said. “I was prepared as always. I tried to put pressure on the takers.

“There’s still a long way to the final but it will be a big game against one of the best teams in Europe and the world.”

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, 12-times FA Cup winners, are chasing a Cup double after winning the League Cup in February.

Treble-chasing Manchester City await in the final after they beat Sheffield United 3-0 in their semi-final clash on Saturday.

“We showed at home we can beat them (Manchester City). So, let’s hope,” De Gea said.

Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-1 in the English Premier League (EPL) at Old Trafford on Jan. 14.

“We are on the right track. One trophy, another final and fighting for the top four. It’s not enough, but it’s a big step from last season.”

Sunday’s semi-final was a rematch of the 1983 final, when Brighton lost to Manchester United in the south coast side’s only appearance in the showcase game.

It had fans on the edge of their seats at Wembley with numerous chances for both sides to break the deadlock, including several in extra time.

Marcus Rashford’s deflected shot in the extra period was pushed wide by Brighton’s diving goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, and then he fired a long shot that sailed just wide.

Kaoru Mitoma nearly won it for Brighton late in extra time, but collided with De Gea in the box.

“It was a very tight game. We played against a very good team,” De Gea said.

“Brighton play really good football. We are now in the final but we have another big game on Thursday (against Tottenham in the Premier League). So, we need to go home and recover.”

The loss ended Brighton’s superb run and ended The Seagulls’ hopes of clinching a first-ever major trophy.

The FA Cup final is on June 3 at Wembley Stadium.

  • REVEALED: Chelsea player upset being ‘singled out’ by Boehly in Brighton blast

REVEALED: Chelsea player upset being ‘singled out’ by Boehly in Brighton blast

One senior Chelsea player is upset being singled out by owner Todd Boehly in his post-match rant after defeat to Brighton.

Boehly addressed the players inside the home dressing room after Saturday’s 2-1 home loss.

The Guardian says Boehly ‘singled out’ one player for specific criticism.

It’s stated the player, who is now believed to be disillusioned and disgruntled, is ‘senior’ and ‘signed for a large fee in the past 12 months’.

It was also claimed the player in questioned appeared ‘disgruntled’ in open training yesterday ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Blues manager Frank Lampard said yesterday: “I am comfortable with that.

“I had my things to say after the game. There is maybe some criticism of our old owner of not coming to games and being around that wasn’t always true.

“I remember moments as a player of owners first coming into dressing rooms, I remember being happy. I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

“I had my things to say, if an owner wants to come in and be positive and speak to the players, they can do that.

“No problem with that, it shows passion and that’s the first thing that I like.”

  • Brighton get apology after refereeing body admits penalty kick error

Brighton get apology after refereeing body admits penalty kick error

Brighton & Hove Albion have received an apology from England’s refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

The apology came after the refereeing governing body admitted Kaoru Mitoma should have been awarded a penalty kick during Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League loss at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Seagulls endured a frustrating afternoon with manager Roberto De Zerbi sent off, alongside Spurs’ acting head coach Cristian Stellini for an incident between the two benches in the 58th minute.

The visitors also had two goals disallowed for handball.

One of their biggest grievances occurred with 20 minutes left when Mitoma had his foot trod on by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg inside the penalty area.

But referee Stuart Attwell waved away appeals and VAR never called for the incident to be reviewed with the score 1-1.

PGMOL chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has since made contact with Brighton.

Webb is understood to have apologised and acknowledged it was a mistake by the officials not to award a penalty kick for the challenge by Hojbjerg on Mitoma.

It is the latest show of greater transparency from Webb and a further example of his efforts to engage in open communications with clubs since he started his role at the PGMOL.

De Zerbi did not want to be drawn into criticising the officials after the match but did admit: “When I was in the dressing room, there was a clear penalty kick for Mitoma.

“You can’t find one situation from my bench where I spoke to the referee to complain some decisions.

“I think I could say something because nothing for the penalty kick for Mitoma, nothing for the goal for (Danny) Welbeck and I am sorry for this.”

  • REVEALED: The exact fee Chelsea paid to prise away Potter

REVEALED: The exact fee Chelsea paid to prise away Potter

Brighton’s financial records have revealed the massive fee Chelsea paid to prise Graham Potter away earlier this season.

Their financial statements for the 2021-22 season, which were published on Wednesday, confirmed the exact number to be £21.5m.

The £22m in compensation Bayern Munich paid RB Leipzig for manager Julian Nagelsmann in 2021 is the biggest ever fee paid for a boss, according to Planet Football.

That makes the fee paid for Potter the highest amount spent on a manager in Premier League history.

And it also makes it the second-highest compensation fee for a manager in football history.

The Blues moved to appoint Potter in September after owner Todd Boehly axed Thomas Tuchel.

But landing the club’s top target did not come cheap.

As well as spending over £600m in the last two transfer windows on players, a staggering £21.5m was also shelled out in order to bring Potter to Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal make new £70m offer for Brighton midfielder

Arsenal have made a new offer for Brighton’s wantaway midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The Gunners have submitted a new bid for Caicedo worth £70million.

The Gunners saw a £60m bid for the Ecuadorian turned down on Friday morning, with the Seagulls said to be demanding £75m. Caicedo did not turn up to training on Saturday before missing the FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon as speculation surrounding his future intensifies in the final days of the window.

After Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi admitted that the club are “ready to go forward” without the talented midfielder, news of an improved offer from the Gunners emerged on Sunday evening.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted on Twitter: “EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal submitted new bid for Moises Caicedo. Understand it’s worth £70 package add-ons included.

  • Brighton dump defending champions, Liverpool out of FA cup

Brighton dump defending champions, Liverpool out of FA cup

Liverpool’s chances of clinching a silverware this season suffered a great setback after losing to Brighton 2-1 in this year’s English FA cup.

Liverpool drew the first blood of the encounter when youngster Harvey Elliot scored the opener inside 31st minute but Darek Lamptey’s long range shot was intercepted by Brighton’s Lewis Dunk to sail through into Liverpool’s goal in the  43rd minute.

Upon resumption in the second half, both teams pressed for a goal and created a lot of chances.

However, in the closing stages of the game, Kaoru Mitoma, who cost about £3m, scored the most glorious injury-time winner to settle an excellent game. It was a perfect demonstration of everything that makes Mitoma one of the most likeable players in English football right now: technique, imagination, style, and a resting heart-rate when everyone else is racing through the cardio zone.

Liverpool only hopes of winning a silverware this season is the Europe Champions Legue where they will be facing last year’s winner Real Madrid in the second round of the tournament later in February.

  • Carabao Cup: Brighton down Arsenal as Chelsea, Tottenham are out

Carabao Cup: Brighton down Arsenal as Chelsea, Tottenham are out

Arsenal FC kissed this season’s Carabao cup goodbye after losing to Brighton & Hove Albion by 3-1 on Wednesday night.

The Gunners have lost for the second time this season in England after 20 appearances in all competitions.

Danny Welbeck’s first-half penalty kick had cancelled out Eddie Nketiah’s opener, before Mitoma and Lamptey struck in the space of 13 second-half minutes to end Arsenal’s nine-match home winning run.

Julio Enciso headed just off target before Jeremy Sarmiento fired narrowly wide.

But Arsenal struck in the 20th minute when Reiss Nelson found Nketiah, who curled a smart first-time finish past Jason Steele.

Debutant Karl Hein’s slip offered Brighton their equaliser, though, as the goalkeeper brought down Welbeck, who coolly converted his penalty kick into the bottom-right corner.

A fizzing Nketiah right-footed drive cannoned against the left post after the interval, before Steele kept out Nelson’s header with a stretching stop.

Brighton hit the front as Sarmiento danced through the middle before laying off for Mitoma to whip a right-footed effort into the bottom-right corner from inside the area.

Former Chelsea defender Lamptey sealed victory soon after as he drilled under Hein after being teed up by Billy Gilmour.

Chelsea’s disappointing run of form continued as they were eliminated from the EFL Cup by Manchester City at the third-round stage with a 2-0 loss.

Both sides made seven changes to their line-ups for the heavyweight tussle at the Etihad Stadium and it was Chelsea who looked the brighter during the first half.

But after Christian Pulisic and youngster Lewis Hall spurned promising chances, quick-fire goals early in the second half from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez put Manchester City in control.

Manchester City, who introduced Kalvin Phillips for his first appearance since mid-September, saw out the win to mean an early exit for last season’s beaten finalists Chelsea.

They were restricted largely to shots from range in a first half edged by Chelsea.

The London would have been ahead at the interval if not for some good goalkeeping and poor finishing.

Pulisic scuffed a shot at Stefan Ortega from close range and had another effort from further back saved, while the lively Hall was denied at the end of a good run.

Jack Grealish forced Edouard Mendy into a couple of saves early in the second half, shortly after Phillips’ introduction, and Manchester City’s period on top resulted in the breakthrough goal.

Mahrez was fouled by Trevoh Chalobah just outside the box and he sent the subsequent free-kick over the Chelsea wall —- with Kalidou Koulibaly failing to jump —- and past Mendy.

The hosts doubled their lead five minutes later through Alvarez, who tapped in after Mendy could only push Mahrez’s shot into the path of the Argentina international.

Ortega produced another fine stop to deny Hall, while Pulisic had a late goal ruled out for offside, but Pep Guardiola felt no need to turn to substitutes Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.

Nottingham Forest produced an impressive performance to knock Tottenham out of the Cup competition with a 2-0 win, even after finishing the game with 10 men.

Second-half strikes from Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard gave the Premier League’s bottom side victory, though nerves were heightened when Orel Mangala was sent off with 15 minutes remaining.

Spurs have made a habit of dramatic comebacks of late, and Antonio Conte named a strong side at the City Ground, including Harry Kane.

He only made four changes from the team defeated by Liverpool on Sunday.

But they could not rescue a result this time and have now lost consecutive matches ahead of meeting Leeds United in their final fixture before the World Cup.

A quiet first half saw Spurs debutant Fraser Forster called into action to deny Lingard on the rebound after a deflected clearance had struck the post.

At the other end, Wayne Hennessey parried away a fierce effort from Matt Doherty.

Lingard stung the palms of Forster again with a shot from the edge of the box early in the second half.

Just moments later the former Manchester United man found Lodi on the left, with the Brazil international cutting inside onto his right foot and bending an effort into the far corner.

It was 2-0 in the 57th minute when Forest struck on the counter down the right.

Former Spurs man Serge Aurier put in a cross for Sam Surridge to head back across goal, allowing Lingard to nod in his first goal for the club.

Kane made way on the hour for the returning Richarlison, but it made little difference as Forest claimed only their second victory in their last 12 games.

This was in spite of Mangala receiving a second yellow card for a foul on the Brazil World Cup star, who had a goal ruled out late on for offside.

EPL: Why we thrashed Chelsea 4-1 – Brighton Manager, De Zebri

Roberto de Zerbi the new Brighton manager has explained why his team demolished  Chelsea 4-1 on Saturday in the English  Premier League encounter.

De Zerbia led Brighton to defeat former manager Graham Potter’s tutored Chelseaat the  American Express Community Stadium.

Zerbia noted that  Brighton defeated Chelsea because his players were fantastic against the Blues.

According to him, Brighton home fans and the people working in his team helped his side defeat Chelsea.

Goals from Leandro Trossard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek (OG), Trevoh Chalobah (OG) and Pascal Grob gave Brighton all three points against Chelsea at Falmer Stadium.

Speaking after the game, De Zerbi told Sky Sports: “I am very happy for the players, for the club and the people working with our team and these great fans. They were the best players on the pitch. They helped us a lot and I am very happy.

“In the first 20-25 minutes, we were fantastic. We played like men. We have a style, and the first 20-25 minutes was fantastic, really fantastic.

“We prepared the team one-on-one. All the players were fantastic.

“No, I don’t want to celebrate anything. Next Saturday there is another game and I am sorry for the Chelsea goal because in the second half we suffered a stupid goal and made a mistake. They changed their tactical position and we weren’t ready to change something for us. But I’m happy because 4-1 against Chelsea is an amazing result.”

How Man Utd has reacted to Brighton loss – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says his team has been working this week on the mistakes made in defeat to Brighton.

United face Brentford in London tomorrow.

Ten Hag said: “After every game, I analyse what went wrong and where we can improve, where we have to improve, and how we have to train.

“We tell and show the players this too, to give them the solutions.

“We learnt a lot [from the first game] but it’s normal when you start a season, every season in that part is the same.

“You have a new start, you make mistakes. Football is a game of mistakes, so we know we have to improve in many factors.

“I know there is always pressure, I have the experience, how it is, I know we have to win every game, I know the fans, I know everyone expects Manchester United to win every game, we have to deal with that and all I can do is prepare the team as well as I can this weekend.”

On Brentford, he added: “Every game is hard. Really good (team), same as last week, Brighton, they have a team and coach long together and a good structure…”
