We looked better with Ronaldo – Ten Hag reacts after Brighton defeat

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admits defeat at home to Brighton was a “definite setback”.

Pascal Gross had Brighton 2-0 up before an own goal from Alexis Mac Allister offered United some hope.

Ten Hag said, “Definitely a setback. A real disappointment this but we have to deal with it. I knew from the start it would not be easy, it is a process and it takes time but we don’t have time, we have to win games. We should have done it better.

“I analysed it and it was unnecessary how we gave away two easy balls. I think the organisation was a big mistake. We have to analyse and have to take the lessons.”

Asked if he was happy with Cristiano Ronaldo in the second-half, Ten Hag continued: “I think so. It was clear to see the second half we were better in the midfield with Eriksen down and Ronaldo up, then we created. It was a pity we didn’t score then.

“It all takes time, you cannot force it. He is one week in training, a little bit more now. He has to do more to get fit and this game will help him. He will be better next week.

“I am not satisfied, totally not happy because we lost and it was totally not necessary. We should have done things better.

“I knew before it was not easy to construct it and develop it, this takes time but I know at the top you don’t have time.

“The reaction in the second half we were acting as one team, we were battling for the result. It wasn’t that we didn’t battle or didn’t have the right attitude, we made mistakes.

“We have to take the lessons and learn from it.”

EPL: Man U lose to Brighton at Old Trafford in season opener

Manchester United have lost their first English Premier League (EPL) game of the season to Brighton and Hove Albion.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the enthralling encounter ended 1:2 in favour of Brighton.

Pascal Gross’ two first-half goals were enough to hand the Seagulls their first win ever away at Old Trafford.

Brighton deserve the victory, having capitalised on United’s ponderousness in the opening 45 minutes.

United livened up in the second half and managed to pull a goal back, but couldn’t find a leveller.

The Old Trafford side’s goal came from an own goal by Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister.

Two senior Man Utd players clash during training

Two senior Manchester United players clashed as a training session came to a premature end on Thursday, it has been revealed.

The Sun says the players were reportedly stunned by the incident in the first United training session since their humiliating 4-0 Premier League mauling at Brighton.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick reportedly saw the alleged altercation and then granted more time off to United’s players, who are said to have had four days to recover from the dismal defeat at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Tempers ‘boiled over’ as a result of a dismal season, training and a disconnect between the players and Rangnick, the report claimed.

United have lost three of their last five games by an aggregate score of 11-1, shipping three goals at Arsenal and four at Liverpool before their hammering at Brighton.

Man Utd couldn’t find way to stop Brighton – Rangnick admits

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ralf Rangnick has admitted his team could not find a way out in defeat to Brighton.

TheNewsGuru reports that United was hammered 4-0 at Falmer stadium.

Rangnick said, “Yes it was [a poor performance]. From the first to the last minute this was not enough and in all-important areas we were second best. To start with we can only apologise to our supporters, it was a terrible performance and a humiliating defeat. It was a completely different game and today from the first minute we allowed them too much time, too much space and we were never able to be in a position to stop them playing through our lines.

“The game plan was completely different, we told the players to be as compact as we could possibly be but we couldn’t stop them.

“We had big problems with their width through their wing-backs, we couldn’t stop their wing-backs as they were always pretty high and wide. For us it was whenever they played the diagonal ball we struggled with those balls although we told our full-backs that they should get out earlier.

“It was very, very difficult to stop them in the first half at all and in the second half we took the risk to bring Edi [Cavani] on as a second striker and Fred and went to a 4-4-2. In hindsight it was maybe a little bit of a risk to play a 4-4-2 against them, but we had to try and change the energy. Today we were second best in all relevant areas.”

  • EPL: Brighton draw really disappointing – Azpilicueta

EPL: Brighton draw really disappointing – Azpilicueta

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta concedes the manner of Brighton’s equaliser last night was tough to take.

The Spaniard returned to the side and was part of a back three which was minutes away from keeping a clean sheet that would have given Chelsea a hugely important home victory.

Yet after Danny Welbeck’s last-gasp header in front of the Brighton fans, Chelsea were left ruing missed opportunities earlier on in the game.

“It’s really disappointing,” Azpilicueta told chelseafc.com.

“Of course, we had chances to kill the game. They also had the chances. We left them alive and of course in the last minute to concede a goal and drop two points is very frustrating. We are not happy at all.

“We knew Brighton make things difficult and we know they would press us high, and they would leave us big chances also for us, so we catch them in a few quick attacks where we could have been more clinical,’ the captain added.

They also had a few chances. They play good football and we had to cope again with two injuries at half-time and you know, that leaves us in a bad position. It is not an excuse, we worked hard, and we were close to the three points.”

He added: “The Premier League is the toughest league in the world, and every opponent is very difficult, but when you don’t get the three points it’s very disappointing.

“We want to win games and hopefully we can give our fans a good start to the new year in front of the fans here against Liverpool. It is a tough moment, but we need to stick together and dig in. It is not an easy situation but this is how we have to overcome these difficult moments.”

Gerrard returns to Premier League with win over Brighton

Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings scored in the final six minutes as Steven Gerrard enjoyed a memorable first match as Aston Villa manager with victory over Brighton.

Gerrard’s bow as a Premier League boss looked set to end in a goalless stalemate until his side broke from an 84th-minute Brighton corner.

Villa went the full length of the field as substitute Ashley Young sent Watkins running down the left wing, with the England forward cutting inside the box before delivering a smart finish beyond Jason Steele.

A minute from time, the hosts got their second as Adam Webster’s attempt to clear John McGinn’s cross went straight to Mings, who finished at the first attempt.

Villa might have had a third but Steele did well to deny Leon Bailey in stoppage time.

The victory ended a run of five straight defeats for Villa, with Gerrard taking applause from all sides of the ground before running down the tunnel in obvious delight.

  • Wasteful Brighton held by Arsenal at Amex Stadium

Wasteful Brighton held by Arsenal at Amex Stadium

Brighton were left to rue several missed opportunities as Arsenal claimed a point at Amex Stadium.

Graham Potter’s side were more comfortable and confident in possession but failed to turn their first-half dominance into goals, with Dan Burn heading the Seagulls’ best opportunity over the crossbar from point-blank range.

Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay were also guilty of missing the target from promising positions, while Shane Duffy headed against the side-netting from Pascal Gross’s corner.

The Gunners’ best first-half opportunity fell to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who nodded against the outside of the post from Bukayo Saka’s looping cross.

Emile Smith Rowe shot straight at Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in a rare second-half attack, but an Arsenal winner would have been harsh on the hosts.

I wish Arsenal would sign Brighton midfielder – Parlour

Arsenal hero Ray Parlour has declared Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma “world class”.

The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and indeed Arsenal are all understood to be monitoring his situation.

“I’ve said for a long time that Bissouma is a top-class player,” he said on talkSPORT.

“I would love to see him at Arsenal, I said that in the transfer window: the one player I would like to see is Bissouma.

“I think he’s got everything. He’s efficient on the ball, he can put his foot in as well, he can pass.

“He probably could score a few more goals I should imagine, but he’s not in the position to score goals. He’s the one that is going to keep everything ticking.”

No-one better than me in Premier League – Bissouma

Brighton ace Yves Bissouma has declared himself the best midfielder in the Premier League.

Bissouma has been linked with England’s biggest clubs over the six months.

Speaking to former team-mate Glenn Murray on Football Focus, Bissouma was asked to name the best midfielder in the Prem and said: “I don’t want to be arrogant, but it’s me because in my head I am working to be the best.

“So I cannot say another name, I know in the Premier League there are so many good midfielders, but for me, it’s me because that gives me the confidence and the energy to work hard to show people I am here and I am Bissouma.

“I just want to be focused on football, to play in every game, every week to be good, to help my team win and the rest we will see.”

Transfer: Ben White completes Arsenal medical

Brighton defender Ben White has completed his Arsenal medical.

The London Evening Standard says Arsenal are set to sign White for around £50m after he underwent his medical on Wednesday.

White, who has been on holiday after competing with England at Euro 2020, visited Arsenal’s training ground at London Colney on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old was there undertaking his medical and finalising his £50m move to the Gunners.

Arsenal have been tracking White closely this summer after technical director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta made him a top target.

Negotiations with Brighton have progressed smoothly throughout talks and earlier this month the pair agreed on a fee.
