Super League Protests affected Brighton performance – Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says he doesn’t need an apology from directors over their Super League involvement.

However, Tuchel also sahys the fan protests around the now failed competition affected Tuesday’s performance in the goalless draw against Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

“Yes it has been distracting, but it’s the owner’s club, it’s not my club,” said Tuchel.

“I’m part of the club, but it’s the owner and the club’s decision, and now they change that decision.

“There’s no need to apologise to me directly, my job is to adapt to the circumstances. And were we distracted? Yeah clearly.

“Me personally I arrived in a state of mind on Tuesday at the stadium that was clearly not the mindset that I normally arrive in, for a match.

“But that’s already in the past, and like I said, I don’t think they need to apologise to me.”

EPL: Chelsea go fourth after goalless draw

Chelsea shared a goalless draw with Brighton to climb into the Champions Leagues places on a night where the future of European football came to a dramatic head.

The fixture was almost a side note, with the news breaking before kick-off that Chelsea were preparing to pull out of the European Super League at the same time as their fans were protesting the club’s inclusion outside Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ notice of withdrawal was followed by that of Manchester City as the controversial new competition threatened to unravel just 48 hours after the 12 clubs involved unveiled their proposals.

With the current Champions League admitting sides on merit, Chelsea will need to finish among the top four in the English top flight, or win the competition, to qualify for a spot among Europe’s elite next season.

The Blues created little but a point was enough to see Thomas Tuchel’s side take up the last of those automatic places, going above London rivals West Ham, who they face on Saturday.

It was in fact Brighton who enjoyed the best chances late on as first substitute Adam Lallana fired wide before Danny Welbeck struck the post from distance.

Defender Ben White was then sent off for the visitors in stoppage time for a second booking as Chelsea looked to break away.

The draw moves Graham Potter’s side seven points above the Premier League relegation zone with six games to play.

    Brighton stun Liverpool in Anfield

Liverpool’s bid to retain the premier league suffered another setback on Wednesday as lowly Brighton stunned the defending champions at Anfield.

Liverpool would have moved third on the table if they have won the match, but it turned out to be a shocker.

The visitor ran away with 1-0 victory and claimed all three points.

Steven Alzate was Brighton’s hero as he was connected with a pass inside the box and slammed home inside the right post. The goalkeeper was helpless.

Liverpool rallied after going behind but Albion defended magnificently as a team and Rob Sanchez collected a fourth successive clean sheet.

His opposite number Caoimhin Kelleher was called upon far more often than the Spaniard, who didn’t have a save of note to make.

It was far from a backs-to-the-wall performance by Albion, who beat Liverpool for the first time since the Terry Connor-inspired FA Cup triumph at the Goldstone 37 years ago.

They passed the ball crisply, used space well and this victory, which lifted them above Newcastle and Burnley into 15th, will do wonders for confidence.

Arsenal sign Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan

Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan has joined Arsenal on loan until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old Australian had recently lost his place in the Seagulls’ team to Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

“We have incredible talent and competition at this club for just one position,” said Brighton boss Graham Potter.

“Understandably, as Australia’s number one, Mat wants the chance of more regular opportunities.”

Ryan, who joined the Seagulls for a club record fee from Valencia in 2017, has made 121 Premier League appearances and kept 28 clean sheets.

Arsenal have been looking for another goalkeeper to challenge Bernd Leno since selling Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa for £17m in September.

The Gunners are 10th in the Premier League, seven places ahead of Brighton, and are in the fourth round of the FA Cup and the last 32 of the Europa League.

  • No excuses for Wolves’ collapse at Brighton, says Nuno

No excuses for Wolves’ collapse at Brighton, says Nuno

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo was left frustrated after his side let slip a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday and said his players paid the price for lack of game management.

Aaron Connolly gave Brighton an early lead but Romain Saiss levelled with a header before Dan Burn scored an own goal and Ruben Neves converted a penalty to put Wolves in command by halftime.

But Neal Maupay’s penalty straight after the interval gave Brighton hope and captain Lewis Dunk headed in a Leandro Trossard cross in the 70th minute to help Graham Potter’s side snatch a point.

“It was mistakes. After a fantastic first half, from the first minute of the second half there’s no explanation,” Nuno told reporters after the game.

“The first half, every time we attacked, we were dangerous. I felt the game was in our control. It’s just a question of sticking together and I think the team has the ability to do much better.

“We have to be more responsible. There’s no excuse. As a team, we should have performed better. We give credit to Brighton but I felt it was more about us than our opponent.”

With Raul Jimenez sidelined for the foreseeable future after he underwent surgery on a fractured skull, Nuno is on the lookout for a new striker and could dip into the January market to sign reinforcements.

“We have to rebalance our squad in terms of positions we’re missing,” he said. “But we trust the young boys, we try to support them. This is the way we work. We don’t have to panic.”

The result left Wolves in 13th place on 22 points from 17 games. They face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup on Friday.

Substitute Lacazette gives Arsenal 1-0 win at Brighton

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette scored 43 seconds after coming on as a second-half substitute to secure a 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League on Tuesday.

The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled to create chances, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang going closest five minutes after the break as Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez managed to deflect the ball behind for a corner.

Lacazette replaced Gabriel Martinelli in the 66th minute and wasted no time putting his side ahead, taking a touch to control Bukayo Saka’s pass in the penalty area before curling the ball into the bottom corner.

Brighton never looked like equalising and the defeat leaves them in 17th place on 13 points from 16 games, two points above the relegation zone.

With the win, Arsenal moves up to 13th on the table with 20 points.

Carabao Cup: Man Utd cruise to last eight

Manchester United beat Brighton for the second time in four days, with Paul Pogba scoring a free-kick to help seal their progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

On Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed a dramatic late penalty, awarded via VAR after the full-time whistle had blown, to beat the Seagulls 3-2 in a game packed with incident.

This was a less frantic and fun affair, played out by largely second-string sides and in periods of torrential rain.

And it was settled in far more routine fashion, with midfielder Scott McTominay finding space in the box to head home Juan Mata’s free-kick from close range in the first half.

Having sent on both Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Mata then sealed the result with a cool finish from inside the box after he was found by a neat flick from Donny van de Beek.

Pogba added the garnish with a direct set-piece that found the top corner via a deflection.

It was an otherwise even game for large periods, with chances for both sides.

Odion Ighalo hit the side-netting from an angle after taking the ball around home goalkeeper Jason Steele, while Leandro Trossard drew a superb save from Dean Henderson in the United net with a shot from close range.

EPL: Stunning James goal secures Chelsea victory

Chelsea have got their season off to the best possible start with a 3-1 win over Brighton at the AMEX on Monday.

The Blues went ahead after 23 minutes thanks to a penalty from Jorginho, which was won by new signing Timo Werner.

Frank Lampard’s side were not dominant in the first-half but still had the game in control. That was until Kepa’s weak save allowed Leandro Trossard to equalise after 54 minutes.

Fortunately for the visitors, Reece James was on hand just two minutes later to restore their advantage.

You won’t see a better first Premier League goal for a long time after right-back James let fly from long-range, leaving Albion shot-stopper Mat Ryan without a chance as the ball flew into the cobwebs.

At 2-1, Lewis Dunk squandered a great opportunity to put the Seagulls level, and Chelsea made them pay.

Kurt Zouma gave his side a two-goal cushion after 66 minutes when his volley from James’ corner deflected in off Brighton defender Adam Webster.

Kai Havertz was also handed a competitive debut alongside his fellow German in Werner, giving Chelsea fans a glimpse of what is to come this season and beyond.

Brighton’s next Premier League fixture is on Saturday against Newcastle at St. James’ Park, while Frank Lampard’s side will host champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Sterling shines as Manchester City run riot against Brighton

Raheem Sterling struck a hat-trick as Manchester City crushed Brighton 5-0 at the AmEx Stadium in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday.

Second-placed Manchester City had lost their previous three away games but never looked likely to extend that streak against a Brighton side that struggled from the outset.

Sterling, who has now netted 27 goals in all competitions, opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

That was when he collected a nod-down from Gabriel Jesus outside the penalty kick box and superbly drove it into the bottom corner.

Jesus made it 2-0 just before the break, turning in from close range after Rodri had headed a corner kick goalwards.

Manchester City took total charge in the second half, with Kevin De Bruyne striking the post in the 51st minute.

Two minutes later Sterling headed in a fine curling cross from Riyad Mahrez.

Bernardo Silva made it four and then Sterling bundled in the fifth in the 81st minute, the ball bouncing in off his head after he had fallen to the floor.

The result ensures that Manchester City, now on 72 points, will finish in the runners-up spot.

They will however have to wait for the decision from the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) on Monday to find out if they will be able to compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City have been banned from European competition for two years by UEFA but appealed to CAS in a bid to overturn the decision.

“We’ve qualified for the Champions League which was the minimum requirement for this club.

“We won it on the pitch and hopefully on Monday UEFA will allow these players to play next season. They deserve to be in the Champions League,” said Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Whatever the outcome of that ruling, City remain in this season’s competition with the second-leg of their last 16 game against Real Madrid coming up in August.

“I was pleased with everything tonight – the result and the levels we reached. We are now at a good level and are ready to play the last games of the Premier League and in the Champions League,” Guardiola said.

  • Brighton beat Bournemouth 2-0

Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Aaron Mooy both broke their goalscoring ducks for Brighton and Hove Albion who returned to winning ways with a 2-0 home win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Jahanbakhsh, who was given his first start of the season, repaid Graham Potter’s faith in the midfielder for the English Premier League (EPL) fixture.

He scored as early as the third minute with a fierce, low strike into the far corner.

Bournemouth had a couple of chances to equalise in the first half.

But Brighton defenders Dan Burn and Lewis Dunk were on hand to make last-ditch blocks as the home side went into the break 1-0 up.

Brighton right back Dan Burn then thought he had scored his first goal for his club, too.

That was when he put the ball in the back of the net during a scramble in the box.

However, VAR disallowed it for a marginal offside call when the set-piece was taken.

Mooy capped a man-of-the-match performance by doubling Brighton’s lead in the 79th minute when he latched on to Leandro Trossard’s pass.

He took two sublime touches to set himself up for a curling shot that beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The win, Brighton’s first at home in four games, lifted them up to 13th in the standings.

Bournemouth remained in 16th —- two points above the relegation zone —-after their seventh loss in nine games.
