Double tragedy: Pastor, brother sentenced to death for murder

The Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Essien Udim local government Area has sentenced one Pastor Uduak Umoren, and his brother, Emmanuel Umoren, to death for beating one Iboro Joe to death over a piece of land.

The deceased, a 45-year-old farmer and trader who hailed from Ikot Otu in Essien Udim LGA, was beaten to death when he visited his sister-in-law in Adiasim Ikot Ekon, also in Essien Udim LGA to condole with her on the death of her husband.

The sister-in-law had told the court that she asked the deceased to accompany her to her late husband’s farmland to assess how much she could sell it for his burial when the wife of the second convict saw them and alerted her husband that someone was trying to bury juju on their family land.

She told the court that arriving on the farmland, the second convict started beating the deceased, while his wife also invited her son and her brother-in-law who joined in the fray, cutting the deceased with a machete and broken bottles.

The deceased was beaten to a state of coma and dragged to his family compound close to the farm, where he gave up to the ghost after three days.

Delivering judgment on the matter on Wednesday, the presiding judge, Justice Winifred Effiong, found the two accused guilty of murder and sentenced them to death by hanging accordingly.

She said the “prosecution team from the State Ministry of Justice had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, adding that the accused did intentionally kill the deceased.”

Senate: APC debunks nominating Umahi’s brother to replace him

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi, has debunked reports that it has nominated former Gov. David Umahi’s brother, Austin, to replace him in the Senate.

The Ebonyi South senatorial district seat became vacant after Sen. David Umahi was appointed Minister of Works.

The state Chairman of the party, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, debunked the report on Monday in Abakaliki while briefing newsmen, noting that the report was ‘false’.

Okoro-Emegha said that Austin or any other person has not been nominated to fill the vacuum as the party will conduct a fresh primary to elect a candidate.

“APC will field a candidate that will retain the seat because it belongs to us.

“We will not allow any seat occupied by the party to go to the opposition because we are on ground in the state,” he said.

The party’s chairman said that the APC will conduct a credible primary to elect a candidate who will be acceptable to it and the people.

“The seat is an elective one so its occupant should emerge through a transparent process and not through nomination.

“The governor, as the leader of the party, has the right to support any aspirant but that does not mean that the ticket belongs to anybody,” he said.

He noted that the party was waiting for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the seat vacant and issue guidelines on the conduct of its election.

“Individuals who also say we would lose the state’s gubernatorial seat at the tribunal are dreaming because it was achieved through an overwhelming mandate.

“The governor has, through his policies, started justifying the confidence reposed in him by the people as they knew his capabilities before electing him,” he said.

Okoro-Emegha said that the party and Ebonyi people are still celebrating Umahi’s appointment as the minister of works.

“Ebonyi was hitherto rated lowly in the country but we have continued to radiate light to all.

“The position occupied by Umahi is not for political patronage but for the best brains with engineering and developmental acumen,” he said.

  • I’m qualified to head APC Campaign Council, says Umahi’s brother

I’m qualified to head APC Campaign Council, says Umahi’s brother

The Ebonyi Governor, Chief David Umahi’s younger brother, Austin, has said that he is eminently qualified to head the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council in the state.

The governor and his wife, Rachel, head the men and women wing of the council, respectively, while Austin is its Director General.

He was reacting to public outcry over the fear about the possible overbearing influence his family would exact on the party’s Gubernatorial Candidate, Chief Francis Nwifuru, if elected.

He dismissed the fear, saying that the governor merely replicated what obtained at the national level of the party, “in constituting the state’s campaign council”.

He said: “The governor as a brother does not see my destiny and I have made sacrifices.

“This sort of wicked insinuation made me not to occupy any position in the first and second tenure of this government.

“All my siblings did not occupy positions but people are still writing.

“I am exceedingly qualified to head the campaign council just as all its members are also qualified.

“I am very close to Nwifuru as I am to the governor and was appointed his returning officer during the party’s primaries.

“This will not be seen as overbearing because he appointed me and I am still going to be his returning officer at the polls.

“I love him and must ensure he wins and if that is overbearing, let us achieve results,” Austin said.

He said that the governor was not nursing any third term agenda because it is unconstitutional.

“Such an insinuation is a product of junk journalism but ones legacies can outlive him.

“The governor’s legacies would outlive him whether anyone likes it or not and it might be what people termed as third term,” he said.

He further said that the party would win overwhelmingly because it had performed creditably to earn the people’s trust.

  • Ebonyi: It will be unjust to hand over to my brother, says Umahi

Ebonyi: It will be unjust to hand over to my brother, says Umahi

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has said that it will be unjust for him to hand over to his brother from the same Ebonyi South Senatorial District as his successor.

Umahi said this on Friday at an APC campaign rally in Abakaliki Local Area (LGA) of the state.

He was referring to the PDP Governorship Candidate, Dr. Chukwuma Odii, who also hails from Ebonyi South.

The governor said that “equity and justice would be negated if such happens”.

“It will be wrong, if after eight years, I hand over to my brother from the next door Local Government Area.

“This will violate the peace, equity, justice, understanding of our founding fathers and everything that binds us,” Umahi said.

He said it was time to reciprocate the gestures of the Ebonyi North Senatorial District, especially the Izzi clan, which massively supported him in 2015.

“The Izzi people in the same spirit of equity, supported me in 2015 because it was the turn of the southern district to rule.

“Power should return to the north where it all began and precisely, the Izzi clan.

“The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Francis Nwifuru, should be supported,” he said.

According to him, anyone fighting for what does not belong to him, is fighting God.

He, therefore, urged the people to vote for all the APC candidates at all levels, saying that the party had performed well in the state.

“Vote for Ahmed Tinubu for President because he took care of Igbos as Lagos governor and will take care of us as president.

“I want to inform the opposition that they cannot negotiate 25 per cent of votes in Ebonyi because the state is totally for APC,” Umahi said.

In a speech, the APC governorship candidate thanked the governor for ensuring that the charter of equity was respected.

He said that the people would remain eternally grateful to him for supporting equity.

“When some stakeholders of the state decided to oppose this arrangement, you decided to stand by it and bequeath peace on the land.

“We came to show capacity of delivering and demonstrate that Ebonyi is totally for APC,” Nwifuru said.

In an address of welcome, the Chairman of Abakaliki LGA, Mr Ebere Nwogba, pledged that his people would deliver APC at the polls.

All the candidates from the area and some stakeholders took turn to affirm their commitment to secure victory for the party at the polls.

How my brother died in my presence – Aliko Dangote

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said doctors told him that his brother, Sani, would die in an hour, and that he died when it was time, “watching the life support machine going down until it stopped working.”

Dangote stated this when the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Bola Tinubu, paid him a condolence visit on Friday in Kano.

“We have always known that there is life and there is death; as Muslims, we don’t know who is next, and it can be today, tomorrow or even now.

“That is why it is good to be good, so that when you get there, you will find out that you have done what you were asked to do on earth,” said Dangote.

He said his brother’s death was a very tough time for the family, especially for him because they were almost bound together.

“And having a brother like this, once you lose him, it is really very painful, because he died in front of myself, our mother and all his children.

“The most painful thing is when you are told that your brother will be passing on in about an hour and you stand by watching as the machine is going down until it stopped working,” Dangote said.

Earlier, Tinubu told Dangote that he was shocked to hear about the death of Sani.

He described him as gentleman during his lifetime. “I call on the family to take heart and continue to pray for the repose of the soul of late Sani Dangote.

“We are here not to just commiserate or console you, we are here together to mourn our dear brother.

“Sani is not yours alone, he is a Lagosian and a great Nigerian and a friend and a brother to all of us here.

“I am not a preacher, but I know what it means to suddenly lose a close relation, especially a brother.”

Tinubu also condoled with the grandfather of the deceased, Alhaji Aminu Dantata.

“Death is a demonstration of Allah’s will, it is not about money, because money cannot buy life.

“We pray to Allah to forgive his sins and grant him paradise,” he said.

Dantata thanked Tinubu for the condolence.

JUST IN: Jide Sowore, brother of Sahara Reporters’ publisher, shot dead by killer herdsmen

Suspected herdsmen have killed Olajide Sowore, the younger brother of Sahara Reporters’ publisher Omoyele, the activist said in a statement.
