    Solskjaer defends Bruno Fernandes decision

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stands by his decision to rest Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils midfielder did not start in their FA Cup quarter final defeat to Leicester City on Sunday.

United could have booked a place in the semi finals, where they would have played Southampton.

Instead, they were second best throughout the contest at Leicester, and eventually lost 3-1.

Asked about Fernandes only coming off the bench in the second half, Solskjaer told reporters: “Every team selection has reasons behind it. Bruno has played very, very much football. He broke all his records on Thursday night [at the San Siro] physically statistically, and the boy is not inhuman.

“He’s also a human being, he’s played a game every three or four days really. It was a chance to start to both Donny [van de Beek] and Paul [Pogba].

“The accumulation of games maybe caught up with us.

“I know Bruno wants to play but sometimes you make decisions for the benefit of both the team and him.”

Man Utd announce new jersey sponsor to replace Chevrolet

Premier League giant, Manchester United’s new shirt sponsors TeamViewer is worth a massive £235m.

The Manchester Evening News says the five-year partnership has been described by United sources as the ‘biggest shirt-only’ deal in the Premier League and the largest sponsorship of any kind secured by a sports team over the past year.

Germany-based TeamViewer will replace Chevrolet at the start of the 2021-22 season on the front of United shirts, ending the American car manufacturer’s seven-year run as United’s shirt sponsors. It is also understood United are in discussions over a new training kit sponsor.

The TeamViewer logo is blue and white, and will be modified to just white on United’s shirts.

United sources have refused to give a specific figure but suggested it is comparable with the £47million-a-year deal Barcelona agreed with Rakuten in 2016.

  • Bruno Fernandes defends his record at Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes defends his record at Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes has refuted accusations of going missing for Manchester United in big games, with the Portuguese playmaker defending his record against fellow members of the so-called ‘big six’.

A talismanic presence at Old Trafford has registered 40 goal involvements through 41 appearances for the Red Devils.

He does, however, have just one non-penalty effort this season across eight outings against other Premier League heavyweights Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.

But I agree the last two games, I didn’t play very well. And I don’t need to see the stats to see if I play well or not. I know when I play well or not.

Fernandes has told Sky Sports on questions over his record in games that matter most: “I don’t know what people mean by ‘top six’, because the teams are in top six in the table. I score and assist against some of them. I score this season against Tottenham. But some people say penalties don’t count!

“I know people expect Bruno to score or assist in every game because when I arrived, I was playing really well. If you see my stats, everyone is thinking that Bruno has to score in every game, Bruno has to assist in every game.

“And I want to do that – it’s the most important thing. But as a player, I don’t look for the big six or the rest of the league. I look for every game in the same way. And I think the league is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. So you don’t have to score or win against the big six – you have to score and win against everyone.

“I see people talking about Bruno not doing so well against the ‘big six’. People have said Bruno gives the ball away too many times when we lose a game.

“Also, in the game against Basaksehir, I scored two goals and I lost more balls than their team, but people said I was the best player in the game. So, what is the point?

“But I agree the last two games, I didn’t play very well. And I don’t need to see the stats to see if I play well or not. I know when I play well or not.

“I saw an interview from Luke (Shaw) saying, ‘people now care more about stats than the performance’. And this is the truth. Because now they’re expecting from me just goals and assists, and not performances.

“They don’t care about the performance of Bruno, they don’t care about ball recovery or how many chances I create, because I can create 10 chances but if I don’t score, people will say Bruno didn’t play very well.

“But this is football. Football is in the moment. Some people have said I’m playing bad, and that I have to do better. And I agree, because we always can do better. But for me, it’s OK. I can have that pressure on my back.

“I’m sure in some moments, I will score, I will assist, and I will perform. And that will help my team-mates to win the game.”

Bruno Fernandes may need rest – Solskjaer

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended Bruno Fernandes after a flat performance for their Carabao Cup semifinal defeat to Manchester City.

Indeed, Solskjaer admits he may withdraw Fernandes from the front line for a rest ahead of their FA Cup third round tie with Watford this weekend.

On the game last night, the United manager had no complaints with City’s passage to the final, insisting they deserved the 2-0 win, though admits they lacked a creative edge on the night.

He wants to play every game, Bruno,” added Ole. “Of course, it’s a long season.

Let’s see what team we come with on Saturday so I’ll have a chat with him about how he feels.

Bruno Fernandes dismisses Player of the Year call

Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes has dismissed talk of winning Player of the Year.

The midfielder has been a huge success since arriving at Old Trafford in January for £55m from Sporting Lisbon and is a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side that has emerged as potential title challengers.

“If we win trophies, it is the most important thing,” Fernandes told MUTV.

“Of course, it’s good for a player to win individual awards and I will never say I don’t want to be the best player in the league or I don’t want to be the PFA Player of the Season. I want to be [that] but I want to be [that] if the team wins trophies.

“If the team does win trophies, for me, it’s the same. For me, the most important thing is to help my team-mates to also be Player of the Season. That’s the most important thing because, if someone from the club is Player of the Season, it means that we do very, very well this season.”

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has broken another record at the club.

With already 10 goals and 7 assists in 15 games this season, Fernandes has made history for United.

According to Opta, the 26-year-old midfielder is currently the only player in United history to be involved in more than one goal per game (1.1) in the Premier League.

His record is now superior to United great Eric Cantona (0.80).

Solskjaer admits Bruno Fernandes can’t play every game

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is aware of the need to rest star man Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese has gotten through an incredible amount of football since signing for the Red Devils in January.

He is nearly ever present in the starting lineup, even in games where others are rotated.

But Solskjaer knows he cannot risk burnout with the man who is carrying the offensive load for his team this season.

The Norweigna was asked about Fernandes and squad rotation in general ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Istanbul Basaksehir.

“Five subs isn’t a relief, but it gives you the chance to rest players earlier because if you want to make two subs at half-time, you’ve still got the chance to make subs and rest players,” Solskjaer said.

“It’s going to be a long season and it’s not just about this game, but it’s the whole accumulation of football.

“I like the five subs and I also like the size of the squads because the players feel they’re involved, especially during lockdown when sometimes you’re told you’re not in the squad you’ve got to stay at home, you’ve got no one to see.

“You can’t go and see a friend and see the game with your friend. It’s another [aspect of] mental welfare that we have to look after the players.

“The Champions League, I like it.

“Bruno… he’s not going to be able to play very single game, that’s for sure.

“When he only played one-and-a-half games for Portugal during the international break, I was very happy.”

  • Fernandes makes Man Utd penalty promise

Fernandes makes Man Utd penalty promise

Bruno Fernandes has vowed to make amends for the first missed penalty of his Manchester United career when the Red Devils are next presented with an opportunity to convert from the spot.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have had plenty of practice from 12 yards in recent times.

Portugal international Fernandes has been their go-to man in that department, with the 26-year-old boasting an impressive record when embracing individual pressure.

Fernandes told MUTV of his future penalty plans, having seen a run of 10 successes for the Red Devils brought to a close: “I’m human, it happens.

“I don’t want it to happen again, I didn’t want it to happen [against Newcastle].

“The keeper did well, I didn’t do the right things. I studied the keeper but I didn’t shoot the ball the way I want, but the keeper deserves credit.

“I need to do much better on the penalty and the next one I will do for sure.”

  • Fernandes left angry with Solskjaer after defeat to Tottenham

Fernandes left angry with Solskjaer after defeat to Tottenham

Bruno Fernandes was left furious by Man Utd manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to take him off at half-time during last Sunday’s 6-1 defeat against Tottenham.

According to The Athletic, Fernandes was among the most vocal players in the United dressing room during the break.

Solskjaer’s men were 4-1 down, having been reduced to 10 men, after Anthony Martial was shown a red card for shoving Erik Lamela.

Fernandes’s display of passion away from the cameras, did little to dissuade Solskjaer from taking the decision to haul off his most creative player.

The decision was a tactical one, given he felt he needed more legs in midfield, with the introduction of Fred and Scott McTominay.

Solskjaer was also said to feel that with Fernandes facing the prospect of three games in the space of a week with Portugal, it was the correct course of action to withdraw him from the fray at the expense of risking injury or the former Sporting Lisbon star losing his temper.

Why joining Man Utd brought me to tears – Fernandes

Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes admits signing for the Red Devils brought him to tears.

Fernandes has revealed he cried tears of joy after signing for Manchester United, in which he fulfilled a dream stretching back to his early childhood.

He wrote for The Players’ Tribunal: “One Christmas, my brother and I went to Switzerland to stay with my dad.

“He was living there for work at the time. This was before the Internet made it so easy to buy kits from all over the world.

“In Portugal, you couldn’t always find Premier League kits, and if you could, they were really expensive. So one day, we went into a Nike shop and our dad let us pick out two jackets.

“This was a big decision, you know? My brother chose a yellow Barcelona one because of Messi. And for me … well, I am proud to say that even back then I was a man of sophistication.

“I chose Man United, of course.”

He continued: “When I found out from my agent that it was really going to happen, obviously my mind went back to that day in Switzerland, picking out the jackets with my brother.

“But there were so many steps along the way that nobody understands — so many difficult moments that only my family experienced with me.

“When I knew for sure that the deal was happening, the first thing I did was tell my wife and daughter the news, and I couldn’t help it … I just started crying.

“Tears of joy. Tears of happiness. Tears of memories.”
