  • ‘Buga’, a connection and reflection of FESTAC ’77 – Lai Mohammed

‘Buga’, a connection and reflection of FESTAC ’77 – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described a famous song `Buga’, released by Kizz Daniel, as a connection and reflection of FESTAC `77, held in Lagos State.

FESTAC ’77, also known as the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, was a major international festival held in Lagos, from Jan. 15 to Feb. 12, 1977.

Mohammed said this in Abuja on Wednesday at the Annual Public Lecture and Symposium to commemorate FESTAC ’77 @ 45 Anniversary with the title “Deepening Intercultural Dialogue and Integration for Global Peace’’.

The programme was organised by the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC).

The minister, who was represented by the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, said that Nigerian artistes had been `bugaring’ since 1977 when the country hosted the festival.

He said that the festival was the largest pan Africa gathering of the time and moment of glory for Nigeria for bringing together 56 countries at a time.

“I believe that without much Ado, we have been able to see the connection between the Nigeria of yesterday, today and that of tomorrow.

“The Nigerians have started bugaring from 1977 that is why today there is connection with the youths of today starting what we called Buga.

“I realised that a famous singer, king Sunny Ade, started `Bugaring’ in 1977 but we did not connect with the message. Today, the message is that there is hope for Africa and the entire world.’’

The minister recalled that FESTAC `77 attracted over 16,000 participants and 56 countries, adding that the festival gave birth to FESTAC town which accommodated 45,000 visitors.

“It also gave birth to iconic building, the National Theatre, in Lagos which was a replica of a Bulgarian design as far back as in 1977.

“It played over 77 plays, 50 music and of course 40 art exhibitions with 200 poetry. I cannot image this kind of quality package in the history of any African country.

“Artistes that came included the like of Steve Wonder from USA and others,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Bawuro Barkindo, recalled that 45 years ago when FESTAC `77 took place, Nigeria was in a jubilant mood.

Barkindo said that it was the time when country used petrol-dollar to execute impactful projects and activities.

Also, the Director-General of CBAAC, Mrs Oluwabunmi Amao, said hosting FESTAC ’77 45 years ago, was a tremendous undertaking that witnessed the greatest and biggest gathering of Black and African peoples both at home and in the diaspora, in a rare show of solidarity and cultural display.

“FESTAC was an epochal event that revived the hope and aspirations of Black and African peoples in a world where they were treated without respect, dignity and recognition.

“Nigeria’s acceptance to organize FESTAC was majorly influenced by the need to recall, record and document the contributions of Africa and peoples of African descent throughout the world to human civilization.’’

According to her, FESTAC equally took place to project African cultures to the world and strengthen historical connection and relationship between Africa and the Diaspora.

“Interestingly today, 45 years after FESTAC, Black and African peoples are beginning to take up their rightful places in the world, in medicine, science and technology, sports, music and entertainment, education, arts and creativity and several areas of human endeavor.

“The contributions of the black and African people to the advancement of the world today is well documented and appreciated.

“Today, we are gathered here to commemorate FESTAC @ 45, not in the same magnitude as in 1977 but in a unique way.

“Many activities have been assembled to make this celebration memorable,’’ she said.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday in Lagos State thrilled guests at the United Nations (UN) Tourism Confab by singing and dancing to songs by Nigerian ace singers, Kizz Daniel, Burna Boy and Asake.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports VP Osinbajo rendered and danced to Kizz Daniel’s “Buga”, Burna Boy’s “Last Last, Na Everybody Go Chop Breakfast” and Asake’s “Organize” at the event.

He made jokes about old folks not knowing the songs and also talked about how Asake sold out a big venue in the United Kingdom (UK) in under 5 minutes.

Osinbajo, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the UNWTO Global Conference on Linking Tourism, Culture and the Creative Industries, posited that music is a global language.

In his speech before declaring the event opened, he said people who do not know the meaning of the words of a song, enjoy the rhythm. He said some could go further to find out meanings of lyrics, discovering the cultures and ideas that inspired them.

Osinbajo noted that currently, Nigerian music, rendered in Nigerian languages are played all over the world He went ahead to sing, perform “Buga’’ and as well gave the interpretation of the lyrics

“Let us see how many people know this song “Koni baje o. let me see you go low low / Let me see you go lolo…..Buga won. The phrase “buga won” is a Yoruba expression, it means flaunt your hard won success while “collect your money” means, `take the fruits of your work’’.

“Many all over the world are squaring up their shoulders, saying it doesn’t matter how hard it may seem let me see you dance and show off your success. The musician will be performing the song at the Qatar World Cup in a few days,’’ he said.

The Vice President who also sang the Afro beat star, Burna Boy music, “Last Last’’ recalled that the musicians performed in front of 70,,000 people in Finland, at the Finland’s flow festival 2022.

“Singing songs like last last (He don cast last last na everybody go chop breakfast) in pidgin English to a cheering Scandinavian audience is the power of music.

“The song is also the first Afrobeat song to have sold over 500 thousand  units in less than 17 weeks after its release,’’ he said.

The Vice President said another Nigerian artist, Asake’s song “Organise’’ though sang in pidgin English with street slangs is loved globally.

He recalled that in his show at the O2 Brixton in the U.K., Asake sold out to an international audience in less than five minutes.

“See how the Black Panther movie and its sequel Black Panther Wakanda Forever has taken the world by storm. It is breaking box office records making over 330 million dollars in sales in its first week,’’ he said,

The Vice President noted that because the vast components of tourism are local and home grown they are more likely to be sustainable.

He, therefore, advocated the promotion and preservation of cultural sights, forests, natural life, and aqua culture for tourism purposes.

LAGOS WOMEN WALK: Sanwo-Olu dances Buga (VIDEO)

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Monday danced to the viral song ‘Buga’ once again in public at the solidarity walk staged by women in the state.

He was flanked by his deputy Obafemi Hamzat and some women.

The walk by women from different parts of Lagos was in support of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima.

Videos of the women, comprising artisans, traders and market women and professionals, marching on the streets with banners, have been trending online.

The women, in their hundreds, gathered at Tinubu’s Square on Lagos Island and other locations in the state for the solidarity walk.

Shading supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, Sanwo-Olu’s new media aide Jubril Gawat said, “The Owners of Lagos … The Mothers of EVERYBODY including ASIWAJU himself.

“We are not calling it 1 Million or 1 Billion … It’s just a simple Lagos women Walk.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the walk comes 48 hours after the October 1 rallies organised by Obi’s supporters nationwide and outside the country.

It also followed a post by Tinubu on Sunday where he debunked rumour of his death.

Tinubu’s whereabouts has been a matter of public concern following his absence from public events including the first signing of the Peace Accord by presidential candidates in Abuja.

The former Lagos governor posted a video of himself on social media on an exercise bike, stating that he is healthy.

“Many have said I have died, others claim I have withdrawn from the presidential campaign. Well… Nope.

“This is the reality: I am strong, I am healthy and I am READY to serve Nigerians from Day One,” Tinubu said.

Recall that sometime May,  Governor Sanwo-Olu joined many other music lovers to participate in the ‘Buga’ challenge.

Daniel Anidugbe, the singer better known as Kizz Daniel, on May 5, came through with ‘Buga’, his latest song, featuring Tekno.

A challenge was thereafter created on social media platforms to promote the less than four-minute song. The challenge has continued to reverberate across the country.

Shortly after he clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to contest for a second term as the governor of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu, who was walking to the podium with his aides, lifted his arms up in a pompous fashion — the trademark sign of the song — while he danced.

The song was being played in the background, while the governor showed off his dancing skills amid cheers from his supporters.

“The people were already going wild; the fans were going wild, which I know was out of love. So no disrespect to the fans… I was asked to stay back. ‘You can’t go’, ‘It’s not safe’.

“So I said ok. I sat down with the team, the organisers, the promoters; let’s come up with a way to make it up to the Tanzanian fans and we decided to do a makeup show for free.

“I even agreed to partner with them this time around. “This Friday, a free show; I will be partnering with Straight Up Vibes to make that happen.

“I must apologize to the fans. None of this was intentional,” the Buga crooner said.

Recall that Kizz Daniel was meant to perform at the Warehouse, Old Nextdoor Arena in Tanzania, on Sunday night, as part of his Afro Classic World Tour, but was absent.

His absence had sparked a huge controversy with the show promoter, Stephen Uwa saying he paid $60,000 to the music star and pleaded with him for over five hours to no avail.

“He only said the airline didn’t bring his bag. That is why he could not perform because his gold chain is not there and he had a gold chain on his neck. He wanted everything.

“I bought him different clothes but he said just because the airline didn’t bring one of his bags, he cannot perform without his gold on his neck,” Uwa had said.

The Tanzanian police then had him arrested over the incident, but the Nigerian government quickly intervened to have him released. All these seem to be put to rest now.
