Ray of hope for Nigerians as President Muhammadu Buhari privately meet with the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Aminu Tambuwal; and the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Atiku Bagudu over the scarcity of the three naira notes.

Also in attendance at the meeting was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele; the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa; as well as the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor.

The meeting held at the President’s office at the State House, Abuja.

The President was said to have cancelled it in view of the court order forbidding government from extending the February 10, 2023 deadline for the swapping of three old naira notes.

Sources within the Presidency also affirmed that the President was wary about the possible perception of disregard for lawful orders.

None of the participants at the meeting agreed to speak to the media.

Recall that due to the newly introduced cashless policy of the CBN, Nigerians have going through hardship as suddenly Naira became very scarce beyond the reach of the masses.

2023: Buhari presents Tinubu to Katsina Emirate Council

President Muhammadu Buhari has again pledged to ensure electoral victory for the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the Feb. 25 presidential election.

Mr. Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman said Buhari made the pledge at the palace of the Emir of Katsina, on Monday.

He enjoined the Emir, Abdulmumini Kabir-Usman, and Emirate Council to mobilise for the political leader.

”We are here to present our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the President said during a courtesy call in the palace.

“Asiwaju has been chosen by our party and we are fully in support of his candidature, and we will work for his victory at the polls.”

The president personally condole the leaders and citizens of Katsina State following the recent terrorist attack on vigilantes in Bakori Local Government area of the state, in which many lives were lost.

According to him, his administration will continue to listen to wise counsels from experts, traditional rulers and political leaders on the economy.

Buhari also pledged to adopt best practices in safeguarding the interest of the people.

“I hope citizens of the country and indigenes will remember what the Governor of Katsina state, and the Emir of Katsina said about the polity and situation in the country.

”I will not want to add more,” he said.

In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Masari commended the president for introducing a social security structure that directly impacted the lives of citizens, with direct transfer of funds to people, and a school feeding programme that encouraged more children to enroll.

“The President has approved more than N38 billion that went straight to improve the lives of citizens here and we saw the difference.

“He didn’t put money in the hands of the rich and privileged so that they could undermine the poor and vulnerable. He reached out directly.

“The President has worked for the interest of the country and citizens.

”We cannot compare the opportunities he got with the previous administrations. And yet, we can see the difference in terms of results in infrastructure and growth of the economy.

“It is unfair and uncharitable to compare someone who was given a N1000 with another person that got a N100. Yet, you can see the result” he added.

The governor sympathised with the families of vigilantes who were ambushed and killed by terrorists in Bakori Local Government Area.

“The terrorists have behaved like animals, animals are even better than them in many ways.

”Animals will only kill their kin when hungry, but terrorists have slain without purpose,” Masari noted.

The governor said the ambush and killing of the vigilantes would be investigated and those involved will face the law.

He urged citizens to avoid politicians that had been flagging the ethnic and religious cards.

“Our God is a God of wisdom and superior power. If he wanted the entire world to be called Katsina, he would have done so.

”If God wanted all citizens black, white or red, he would have done so. He created a diverse world, and we must respect that,” he said.

Masari presented the APC presidential candidate to the Emirate Council, noting that Tinubu’s record of service in Lagos State and the nation have been commendable.

“Lagos state had a poor security record, with cases of attacks, robberies and dead bodies on streets, until Asiwaju took over leadership in 1999.

“The state has been transformed with infrastructure and earned a reputation as one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

“The state is now a centre of excellence because of the vision of the APC presidential candidate,” Masari added.

The APC presidential candidate condoled with President Buhari, Masari and the Emirate Council over the terrorist attack.

He promised that the victims loved ones would be catered for, and efforts would be made to apprehend the masterminds of such heinous crime in the country.

“We will not forget them. We will not forget their children and the parents left behind.

”No leader will be happy to see citizens slaughtered or hear of it. It is sad, painful and tortuous,” Tinubu said.

According to him, the peace and stability of the nation remains a collective responsibility.

“Thank you for the prayers and support. You promised to be behind the President like a rock of Gibraltar and you have done so.

“The President brought me here, and he has brought me home. I can say welcome home, because I am at home here,” he stated.

Tinubu thanked the Emirate Council for their support to the president, assuring that he would continue with the same legacy of discipline and fairness, when elected to office.

The Emir of Katsina thanked President Buhari for presenting the APC candidate to the Emirate Council and citizens of Katsina, assuring that they would pray and mobilize for victory at the polls.

He appealed to the president to look into the challenges posed by currency swap, adding that the “pain of the people, should be the pain of leadership.”

Buhari’s administration has subdued Boko Haram insurgency – Buratai

The former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd) has claimed that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has subdued Boko Haram insurgency and terrorist acts.

Buratai made the claim in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, recalled that President Buhari in his inaugural address on May 29, 2015, promised to subdue the terror groups.

The former COAS, however, warned that it is wrong to think that victory over Boko Haram terrorists meant a total cessation of hostilities. That, he said, would happen only when the terrorist groups agree to forsake their ideology, embrace democracy, respect the national constitution and sue for peace.

Buratai said the President had, right from his inauguration, clear-cut strategies to subdue the terrorists and restore peace to the North East and Nigeria in general.

He recalled the president in his inaugural address saying that the military command centre will be relocated to Maiduguri and remain until Boko Haram has been completely subdued.

“I say this with every sense of responsibility that the Buhari administration has subdued the Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism,” said Buratai.

According to him, the president came fully prepared with all the right information about the root causes of the insurgency and terrorism.

Buratai said that the Boko Haram insurgency was allowed to manifest before 2015 by official bungling, negligence, complacency and collusion.

This, he added, made Boko Haram become a terrifying force, taking tens of thousands of lives and capturing several towns and villages, covering swathes of Nigerian sovereign territory.

“This is the true summary of the Boko Haram armed insurrection. The murder of Muhammad Yusuf by the police was clearly extrajudicial. Negligence, complacency and collusion with the proponents and strategic leaders of the Boko Haram insurgency for selfish reasons caused the insurgency to degenerate into a full-blown nightmare,” he added.

2023: Wike reveals “secret” behind Naira redesign, makes wild claim

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has claimed that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN redesigned the Naira notes with the aim of causing unrest in the country that would lead to the postponement of the 2023 general elections.

Wike, who spoke on Saturday during a campaign in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of the state, claimed that the redesign is targeted at making people angry.

The governor alleged that there were plots by some persons in power to scuttle the election and introduce an interim government.

He said, “This policy (naira redesign) is targeted at making people angry so that they will demonstrate and riot and then the election be postponed. Then, they will introduce an interim government.

“No matter the provocation, don’t protest,” Wike cautioned the people of the state.

“This election will hold. This election is by the PVCs. This election is not an election of cabals; it is an election of Nigerians.”

New Naira scarcity: Buhari to interrogate CBN, others

President Muhammadu Buhari says he will interrogate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other government agencies involved in the printing and distribution of new Naira notes in the country.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity in a statement, said the president made this position known when he met with members of the  Progressive Governors’ Forum on Friday in Abuja.

The Governors were in the presidential villa to share with the president the negative impact of the Central Bank’s policy.

According to the governors, the currency re-design policy is undermining the painstaking efforts that have been put forth by this administration in transforming the economy.

The president stated that when considering the policy, prior to its initial approval, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes will be printed outside the country.

Buhari disclosed that he received firm assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment for the domestic execution of this exercise.

He, however, maintained that he would interrogate these assurances as part of his engagement with the responsible agencies of government.

Buhari, therefore, urged the citizens to give him a seven-day window to resolve the currency crunch that had emanated from the implementation of the Central Bank policy to change high value Naira notes with the newly designed ones.

According to him, the objective of the policy is not to create hardship, rather, its aim is to provide the economy with much needed revitalisation and the benefits will be borne in the medium to long term.

”Unfortunately, inefficiencies and underhanded practices being carried out on the part of our banks as the primary distribution medium, have destabilised the smooth and successful execution of the policy.

”Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves.

”An extension of the time frame within which to complete this process will be made insignificant for as long as greed and selfishness continue to guide our actions,” he added.

The president said he had received and seen televised reports about cash shortages and undue hardships that local businesses and the citizens were being subjected to.

He, therefore, assured that the balance of the seven of the 10-day extension would be used to rectify whatever issues that posed a threat to the successful implementation of the currency swap policy.

While continuing to monitor the situation, the president assured that he would be meeting with both the CBN and the Security and Minting Company and a decision would be taken based on current realities in the best interest of the people.

The governors while briefing the president, reiterated their position which is in full support of the policy decision to redesign the currency.

They said that they were convinced about the intent behind its thinking, but shared their concern regarding the current fallout which has a debilitating impact on their constituencies.

They told the president that, as leaders within the party and the government in their various states, they were becoming anxious regarding the economic impact and the potential erosion to our democratic process, particularly the upcoming general elections.

They, therefore, requested that the president should direct an adequate injection of the new notes and the continued utilisation of the old ones until the end of the year.

The president thanked the Governors for bringing the cries of the people to him, given their proximity to them and assured that there would be a solution to the problem.

  • BREAKING: I will make a decision on Naira redesign in 7 days – Buhari

BREAKING: I will make a decision on Naira redesign in 7 days – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has decided to make a critical decision in seven days following the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to change high-value Naira notes with new ones.

Mr. Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman in a statement, said Buhari stated this during a meeting with the Progressive Governors Forum on Friday at the State House.

The APC Governors were in the Presidential Villa to seek solutions to the cash crunch which they said was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy.

According to President Buhari, the currency re-design will give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits.

He, however, expressed doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy.

“Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves.

”Even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away,” he said.

He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people and gave assurances that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension would be used to crackdown on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation.

“I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the president assured.

The governors told the president that, while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good and they are fully in support, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset.

They told the president that, as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming.

They requested the president to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year.

The president said when he considered giving approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes would be printed in a foreign country and they, in turn, gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs.

He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening.

Buhari told the governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and would act in a way that there will be a solution.

  • How Buhari used diplomacy to end Boko Haram – Onyema

How Buhari used diplomacy to end Boko Haram – Onyema

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema has given details of how President Muhammadu Buhari deployed diplomatic engagements to end activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.

The minister spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the 22nd edition of the PMB Administration Scorecard Series (2015-2023) organised to project the achievements of the Buhari government.

Onyema recalled that before the Buhari administration came on board in 2015 the threats posed by Boko Haram had become alarming, as the insurgent group had taken over some parts of Nigerian territory.

He said upon assumption of office, the President personally engaged with Nigeria’s neighbours -Cameroon, Chad, Benin Republic, and Niger Republic –  to engender renewed efforts in countering terrorism in the Lake Chad region.

The engagements according to the minister, led to the formation of a military coalition, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), with the support of AU and UN, deployed to fight the terror group.

The minister said the bilateral engagement by the President extended to partners across the Atlantic, particularly the United States.

He said with the approval of the President, the foreign affairs ministry negotiated improved relations between Nigeria and the U.S.

Onyema said this paved way for the sale and delivery of twelve A-29 Super Tucano military aircraft and weapons to fight insurgency.

According to the minister, the request for the purchase of the platforms had been rejected by the US Parliament before the emergence of the Buhari administration.

“The ministry also brokered an exchange of visits between President Buhari and his Turkish counterpart Recep Erdogan in 2016 and 2017, respectively, leading to the signing of several MoUs, especially the Defence Industry Cooperation of 2021.

“This enabled Nigeria to purchase from Turkey 6T-129 Attack helicopters and 6TB2 Drones to fight insurgency. A number of these visits were undertaken with purposeful results.”

At the Multilateral level, Onyema said with the support of President Buhari, the ministry was able to convince the United Nations to approve the listing of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) as a terrorists organisation.

He said the UN equally approved sanctions regime for ISWAP, a splinter group of Boko Haram in the Al-Qaida, pursuant to paragraphs 2 and 4 of UNSC Resolution 2368 (2017).

The minister said the approvals by the UN helped to put the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP on global front agenda

Onyema said the ministry had since 2015 ensured the renewal of the MNJTF by the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC).

He said the efforts, to a large extent, complemented other national efforts in degrading terrorist groups.

The minister recalled when the country faced the challenge of some unfounded human rights narratives regarding counter-terrorism activities in the Northeast.

In addressing the challenge, he said the President pushed for the re-election of Nigeria into the global Human Rights Council.

The minister said the re-election provided the delegation with the ample opportunity to defend and put the negative narratives into proper perspective.

Onyema said through diplomatic engagements, President Buhari was also able to get international supports in addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the Boko Haram crisis.

Specifically, he said with the support of the President, his ministry engaged with the UN, Norway and Germany, which led to the donation of billions dollars for humanitarian intervention.

The funds, according to the minister were used in the repatriation of refugees, reintegration of displaced persons and for Lake Chad stabilisation strategy.

He noted that the drying up of the Lake Chad, which serves as source of livelihood for over 40 million people who live around the lake, was one of the drivers of the crisis in the region.

The minister said the President’s diplomacy helped to secure international agenda for the recharge of Lake Chad, of which work is ongoing.

Popular Nigerian singer, Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko, known professionally as Adekunle Gold and AG Baby, has blamed the current administration for the numerous challenges Nigeria is experiencing.

He wrote; “This current administration wasted 8 years of our lives. 8 years, we regressed as a nation.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has said no single government is capable of solving all the problems facing the country.

He stated this on Monday, January 30th at the State of the Nation Dialogue organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja.

Buhari, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the only solution is for successive governments to be building on the foundations laid by previous administrations.

BUHARI'S ADMINISTRATION: "8 years, we regressed as a nation"- Adekunle Gold

He said; “I will say no one government in this country will be able to solve the problems of Nigeria but as we build on the processes laid by successive governments, not discarding completely what has been put in place; we will build our dreams, take one or two things to concentrate on and move on.

“We believe the outcome of this dialogue can be transmitted to us so that whatever resolutions are reached, whatever recommendations you make; that will become part of the document that we will prepare as we transit and handover to a new incoming government.”

  • APC, Buhari strongly united behind Tinubu – PCC

APC, Buhari strongly united behind Tinubu – PCC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC)says the party’s leadership and President Muhammadu Buhari are strongly united behind Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, toward a victory in 2023 general election.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Director, Media and Publicity APC PCC said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Onanuga said that all attempts by opposition elements to put a wedge between Buhari and Tinubu would fail.

He said the reference to the naira exchange rate by Tinubu at a campaign rally in Calabar, Cross River, was not an attack on the Buhari-led administration as was being speculated.

“We find it important to correct the misrepresentation of the statement of our candidate, Asiwaju Tinubu at the campaign rally in Calabar by a section of the media,” he said.

Onanuga said Tinubu at the rally, urged the party’s supporters and people of Cross River not to vote for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar because of their litany of failures while in power for 16 years.

“The reference to exchange rate was not in any way an attack on the Buhari-led APC administration, but an attempt to capture how the economic mismanagement of the PDP created forex crisis in the country since 2015,”he said.

He added that individuals who followed the entire sequence and context of what Tinubu said at the Calabar rally would know he directed his statement against PDP and Atiku.

“Let’s we forget, the PDP left the forex reserve at $28 billion by May 2015, when Buhari took over despite unprecedented revenue from crude oil.

“Even with the massive oil theft and low price of crude, until recently, President Buhari had built up the reserve to about 38 billion dollars.

“The PDP in 1999 met the exchange rate at N85 to one dollar in 1999 and left it at N230 in 2015.

“The futile attempt to misrepresent Tinubu by the mischievous PDP media did not detract his central message,” Onanuga said.

He added that the former two-term Lagos State governor explicitly said the people should not follow PDP and Atiku because they don’t know the road.

Onanuga said that Tinubu could not had meant Buhari does not know road, having celebrated numerous times, the achievements of his administration.

The APC Director of media and publicity, said Tinubu had also said at the campaign fora that he would build on Buhari’s achievements if elected on Feb.25.

He said it was therefore simply illogical that the same Tinubu would attack the Buhari administration of not knowing the road.

“In contrast, throughout this campaign up till now, Tinubu has consistently said PDP and all the opposition parties put together do not know the road to prosperity for Nigeria.

“He also said the competing candidates do not have the track record he amassed as governor of Lagos.

“As the front runner in the presidential race, Tinubu has promised to implement his robust action plan that will bring socio-economic prosperity to our country,” Onanuga said.

He added that the APC PCC was however, not unmindful of the antics of some media organisations to deliberately misrepresent Tinubu.

Onanuga said that such media organisations accentuate anything they thought would project Tinubu in a bad light since the beginning of the electioneering circle.

“All the machinations of the opposition elements to put a wedge between President Buhari and Tinubu will fail.

“APC, its leadership, and President Buhari are strongly united behind our presidential candidate.

“All the sponsored innuendos, invented and imaginary discord in APC which the failed PDP and their media organs hope to cash on to win the coming election will blow up in their faces,”he said.
