APC RALLY: How power outage stopped Buhari, Tinubu’s speeches in Bauchi

The presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bauchi State was brought to an abrupt end by a power outage on Monday, leaving President Muhammadu Buhari and the party’s standard bearer, Bola Tinubu, unable to deliver their speeches.

The rally, which commenced at 11.50 am, was going on at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, when the power supply ceased and the sound system went off and could not be restored.

APC RALLY: How power outage stopped Buhari, Tinubu’s speeches in Bauchi

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that there was an outage when the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Atiku Bagudu, was making his speech at 12.20 pm.

Shortly after, the electricity supply was restored and Bagudu came back to conclude his remarks.

But at exactly 1.10 pm, the power supply again went off shortly after the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, mounted the podium and began addressing the party supporters.

After waiting in vain for power to be restored, the president marched to the podium and raised Tinubu, Shettima and the Bauchi State governorship candidate, Sadique Abubakar’s hands as a sign of endorsement

On the podium with the national chairman were Tinubu; his running mate, Kashim Shettima and his wife Nana, while Buhari, who was sitting at the VIP (Very important persons’) section of the stadium, waited for electricity to be restored.

While Adamu, Tinubu, Shettima and others were on the podium, the power was restored again before it went off for the third time and all efforts to resolve it failed.

As a result of the power failure, Tinubu could not address the mammoth crowd at the rally, following the departure of President Buhari for a scheduled visit to Lagos.

    APC’s reaction to the outage

In a telephone conversation, The party’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said it would be wrong to attribute the incident to sabotage, adding however that the picture would become clearer at the end of the investigation.

“I can’t confirm what truly happened. The engineer will be able to tell what really happened even though from the onset, when I saw wire microphones, I had a little reservation.

“Under normal circumstances, we should have used wireless microphones. I am not a technician so I can’t allude to anything. Investigations would reveal what truly happened,” Ibrahim said.

Narrating the incident, the Director of Publicity said, “There was a sound breach, the equipment failed, and the audio quality was bad, but that is not to say the scheduled appointment of Mr. President was abruptly interrupted.

‘’The President was called upon to come to the podium and as he was getting there; the chairman of the party was addressing the rally, then, the sound system went off.

“People couldn’t hear him but all the same, the chairman called on the public to vote for the APC and the presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu climbed to the podium.’’

‘’The President raised his hand and called on the people of Bauchi to massively vote for Tinubu and (retired) Air Marshal Saddique Abubakar as the governorship candidate and all APC candidates standing for elections.

“The President had another scheduled for Lagos and so he left. He is a man who is punctual, who wants to keep to time and just because there was a sound breach does not mean he should delay his departure for Lagos,” he said.

Buhari’s arrival at the APC rally in Bauchi

Buhari had arrived in Bauchi to lead the APC presidential and governorship campaign rally.

The aircraft conveying the President touched down at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Airport, Bauchi around 10:20 am.

He was received by the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who is the Peoples Democratic Party candidate and his opponent in the March 11 governorship election, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.).

Others, who were at the airport to receive the President include the APC chairman, Adamu; the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong; Senate President Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazzau (retd.); Andy Ubah, Governors of Borno, Kebbi and Yobe states, Babagana Zulum, Abubakar Bagudu and Mai Mala Buni, respectively.

From the airport, Buhari proceeded to the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Adamu, for a courtesy visit and thereafter headed to the campaign venue.

Buhari was to officially present the APC candidates to the Bauchi electorate at the rally, from where he would depart for Lagos on a two-day working visit.

But after waiting in vain for power to be restored, the president marched to the podium and raised Tinubu, Shettima and the Bauchi State governorship candidate, Sadique Abubakar’s hands as a sign of endorsement.

He also went round the podium to show Tinubu and his running mate to the thousands of supporters who were becoming restless.

While that was going on, the technical team was running up and down trying to fix the outage but they could not.

Buhari, who subsequently left the stadium without delivering any speech, waved to the crowd as he headed toward his vehicle.

The rally ended shortly after the President’s departure.

APC chieftains who spoke at the rally before the outage

    Other party chieftains who spoke at the event before the outage include the state Chairman of the APC, Musa Babayo; the state governorship candidate; the Chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong; the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Amb. Maryam Katagum; a former Bauchi state governor, Isa Yuguda;

However, thousands of party supporters who had gathered to show their solidarity and catch a glimpse at the president left in anger, confusion and disappointment.

It was gathered that some youths vandalized and took away some of the iron barricades used for crowd control at the stadium.

PDP campaign council wants Buhari to read riot act to government agencies

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to read the riot act to agents of the government from interfering with the 2023 general election.

The council made the call during a press conference jointly addressed by its Director Strategic Communication, Dele Momodu; Spokesperson, Daniel Bwala; Atiku’s Special Assistant Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu; Atiku’s special adviser media, Paul Ibe on Sunday in Abuja.

Shaibu said that any effort to intimidate opposition parties was an effort to interfere with the conduct of a peaceful election.

He demanded for immediate sack of Minister of State, Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, for alleged abuse of office and using his official position to dabble into politics and 2023 general elections.

“You will recall that recently a serving minister has written a letter to agencies of the government who are the same members of the executive branch of government and demanded that in 72 hours they should prosecute the presidential candidate of PDP.

“In their press conference, they bragged about their powers and control of law enforcement.

“He, whilst serving as a cabinet member and campaign spokesman, uses the taxpayers’ money and official privilege and powers to heavily compromise the agencies of government.”

Bwala decried situation where cabinet members who should focus on governance would use their offices to influence agencies of government in favour of the APC.

“Members of the opposition are reported to be increasingly invited by law enforcement agencies for one question or the other in other to weaken the opposition.

“Any effort to intimidate opposition is an effort to interfere with the conduct of a peaceful election.”

Bwala also called on the anti-graft agencies to invite the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Bwala also alleged threat to his life and some other members of PDP.

He called on domestic and international election observers including the ECOWAS, USA, UK, European Union, and other development partners to look into various threats to the peaceful conduct of 2023 general elections.

Momodu, however, said that no amount of intimidation would deter the PDP from rescuing the country.

How embattled CBN gov, Emefiele scored ”away goal” with visit to Presidential Villa

President Muhammadu Buhari in the course of the week received briefing from the embattled Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, in the Presidential Villa Abuja.

The CBN governor updated the president on the activities of the apex bank contrary to some media reports that Emefiele was under security surveillance.

Emefiele’s visit to the Presidential Villa, which had so far doused the tension in the apex bank, was the first since he resumed work at the CBN after his leave on Jan. 12, 2023.

It was speculated that the CBN governor travelled out of the country amidst fears he would be apprehended by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) over several allegations against him, including terrorism financing.

However, the DSS dismissed such allegations, including online reports that its operatives on Jan. 16  invaded the headquarters of the CBN and took over the office of the governor of the apex bank.

The CBN governor is believed to have presidential backing on the Naira redesign and withdrawal limit policy introduced by the apex bank in December 2022.

Buhari had earlier in the week departed for Nouakchott, Mauritania, where he received “African Award for Strengthening Peace’’.

The President was honoured for his leadership role in promoting peace on the continent, through regular inventions, counsels and conciliatory position.

Apart from the international recognition for serving Nigeria and the larger interest of peace in Africa, the Nigerian leader also participated in the Programme of the Third Forum of the African Conference for Peace.

While in Mauritania, the president hosted Rashad Hussain, United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom at Nouakchott

Buhari recounted his private meeting at the White House with former President Donald Trump.

He recalled Trump asking him: “why are you killing Christians in Nigeria,” and how he proceeded to tell him that the issue in the country was not religious but rather criminal, and a usage of religion by some elements to further their economic, and sometimes, political interests.

Buhari also met with President of the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum, Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah, on the sidelines of the African Conference for Peace, held in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Shaykh Bin Bayyah commended the efforts of the Nigerian leader to eradicate religious extremism, stressing that ”it is something the world must collaborate to do.

“You are doing a great job in that regard, and it is something we need to do wherever such rears its head round the world.”

  • Nobody needs your jaundiced political views now – BMO to Obasanjo

Nobody needs your jaundiced political views now – BMO to Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been advised to keep his political opinions to himself, as they have a history of being “faulty, erroneous and self-serving”

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) said in a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, that the former President had “more often than not provided political directions to the country that suited only his selfish interests and not the interest of the nation”.According to the group, the former President “is notorious for pursuing self-centred ambition masked as national interest. History is full of examples of how the sneaky leader has made attempts to push, mostly through corrupt means, his ambition through nefarious backdoor channels.

“The earliest display, since our return to democracy, of his poor sense of political judgment in selecting the country’s president was when he began to think that he was the best thing Nigeria needed, and consequently tried to re-write the Nigerian Constitution and award himself a third term in office.

“Failing to secure that obnoxious third term agenda, the self-centred leader decided to hand-pick a leader who he could control since he could not be in the office. It was then he foisted on the country a candidate whose state of health was clearly questionable.

“Upon the sad demise of that candidate, Mr. Obasanjo looked for the next lackey and found one in former President Jonathan, a candidate that came in to further build on the institutional corruption that President Obasanjo had founded.

“It didn’t take long for President Obasanjo to go back to his vomit, and endorse Atiku Abubakar, a notoriously corrupt individual, by his own admission, and by his former boss-Obasanjo himself.

“The former President, in the pursuit of his selfish ambition, threw caution to the wind and endorsed the man he once swore never to support”.

This, BMO said, was further affirmation that Obasanjo’s sense of judgment is “tainted by an unhealthy pursuit of selfish, obnoxious desires.

The group called on Nigerians not to be deceived by President Obasanjo’s antics and pursuit of a selfish ambition that seeks the collapse of Nigeria.

“Former President Obasanjo’s latest endorsement of the overhyped Mr Peter Obi, a candidate with no substance or clear vision for the country, whose track record of failure has left a foul stench still suffocating the people of Anambra,  follows the Obasanjo pattern of directing Nigerians to the pit of hell because he does not have the keys to heaven.

“His political judgment is highly faulty, always erroneous, and naturally self-centred.

“We urge eligible voters to key into the testimonials of the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who has verifiable record and a vision for renewed hope for Nigeria.

“Asiwaju Tinubu is the only candidate that offers two good deals for the price of one vote: he will build on the solid foundation that President Buhari has put in place, which is evident to all Nigerians; and he would also usher in a renewed vigour in APC’s progressive agenda.

“Tinubu is bringing to the table an experience of handling tough environments and a gift of recruiting the best hands to deliver on the job. His achievements and testimonies from Lagos State are strong indications of his capacity to steer the country in the right direction,” the group added.

  • How Buhari policies brought about Judicial reforms – AGF Malami

How Buhari policies brought about Judicial reforms – AGF Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, says President Muhammadu Buhari’s renowned anti-corruption posture and policies, unsurprisingly, brought to the front burner issues of judicial reforms and independence.

Malami made the disclosure in Abuja, during the 17th Edition of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration’s Scorecard Series on Thursday.

He said that adherence to the tenets of the rule of law, deepening democratic governance practices and strengthening institutional reforms across law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies were part of the cardinal policies at the core of the agenda of Buhari’s administration.

“Justice sector transcends the Ministry of Justice or the Office of the Attorney General. The policies and activities in the justice sector are driven by different stakeholders who play assigned roles ranging from enactment of laws, interpretation of laws, to implementation or enforcement of laws, with the ultimate aim of ensuring access to justice.

“The fact that justice is a mandatory requirement of an orderly society means that justice permeates every sector of society and governance’’.

He noted that an efficient justice delivery system is key to ensuring Nigeria’s economic growth and development, as well as ensuring the socio-economic wellbeing of citizens.

“Investors are often attracted to economies that have institutionalized functional judicial systems, and where the rule of law prevails.

The minister said that in recognition of the need to strategically address the challenges facing the sector, the ministry convened the first ever National Summit on Justice.

He said the summit was aimed at building consensus among justice sector institutions and practitioners and evolving a justice system that is fairer, more effective, accessible, efficient and responsive to the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians.

“In a federation and constitutional democracy such as ours, collaboration between the Federal and State governments and other stakeholders in the justice sector is critical to drive the reforms of the justice system for national development.

“The result of the summit was the adoption of a National Policy on Justice in 2017, which is a blueprint to guide all justice sector institutions, without compromising the fundamentals of our federal system of government’’.

He said the ministry has been strongly driving the prosecution of sexual and gender based violence, anti-corruption drive, increased transparency with the growth of initiatives like freedom of information, beneficial ownership disclosures and open contracting.

“There have been continued efforts to strengthen dedicated institutions to ensure data–policy nexus and inter-agency coordination and collaboration, especially via the Inter Agency Task Team of anti-corruption agencies (IATT) platform’’.

He added that in line with the cardinal principle of the present administration in the fight against corruption, they have achieved the following successes under the Asset Recovery and Management effort of this Administration.

“In revenue generation through sale of forfeited assets the sum of one billion, eight hundred and twenty three million, seven hundred & eighty-eight thousand, one hundred and forty-six thousand naira, eighty-six kobo has been generated so far by the Ministry, from the forfeited properties.

“In international asset recoveries in compliance with Presidential mandates and foreign judicial processes, the Ministry has recovered the sum of six million, three hundred & twenty-four thousand, six hundred & twenty seven pounds, sixty-six pence; five million, four hundred and ninety-four thousand, seven hundred and forty-three euros, seventy-one cents; and three hundred and ninety million dollars from various jurisdictions.

“Some of the recovered funds are being utilized in the financing of critical infrastructure including Abuja – Kano Expressway, Second Niger Bridge, and Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.

“Due to the concerted efforts by my office, in conjunction with relevant stakeholders, including the legislature, the president recently assented to the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act 2022 (POCA) on May 12 2022.

“POCA is the first legislation in Nigeria that comprehensively provides for mechanisms, processes and procedures for the tracing, restraint, seizure, confiscation, forfeiture and management of properties derived from unlawful activities.

“Its main objective is to take out the profits that incentivize and fund crime, with the ultimate aim of disrupting the cycle of crime and preventing future offences and corrupt practices’’.

He added that the ministry has also been able to enact the following anti-corruption and criminal justice laws: Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2017, Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit Act, 2018, Mutual Legal Assistance Act, 2018, Company and Allied Matters Act incorporating Beneficial Ownership, 2020, Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022, and Witness Protection and Management Act, 2022’’.
