A Federal High Court, Abuja  on Wednesday, described as “unlawful” the appointment of Federal Character Commission (FCC)’s Chairman, Muheeba Dankaka, and the Secretary, Bello Tukur, from the northern region by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, held that the former president had failed to comply with the provisions of the laws in the duo’s appointment.

“Therefore, I find that there has been failure of the 1st defendant to comply with the provision of Section 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 4 (1) (a) of the FCC Establishment (FCCE) Act, 2004 and Section 4 of the Guiding Principles and Formulae for the Distribution of all Cadres of Posts,1997 made pursuant to Section 4 (1) (a) of the FCCE Act, 2004,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a human rights advocate, Festus Onifade, had, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/709/2021, sued President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), FCC, Dankaka and Tukur as 1st to 5th defendants respectively.

In the originating summons dated and filed on July 19, 2021, the lawyer sought interpretation to two questions.

These include, “Whether by the combined provisions of Sections 7 and 8 (1) and (2) (a), (b), and (c) of the third Schedule, Part 1 of1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 4(1) of the Subsidiary Legislation (GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND FORMULAE FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF ALL CADRES OF POSTS) 1997 of the Federal Character Commission (Establishment,) Act 1995,.

He, therefore, sought a declaration that the president (1st defendant) is bound to observe and comply with the provision of the Sectons 7 and 8 (1), (2) (a) (b) (c) of the Third Schedule, part 1 of the 1999 Constitution  (As Amended) in the appointment of persons to the office of the chairman and Secretary of FCC.

He sought an order directing the president to immediately dissolve and reconstitute the FCC’s board in accordance with the laws.

Onifade equally sought an order directing the president to immediately appoint other persons into these positions in compliance with the provisions of the constitution and the Act of National Assembly, among others.

While Dankaka is from Kwara, Tukur hails from Taraba.

Buhari had, on April 28, 2020, appointed Dankaka as the chairman of the commission for a five-year tenure and was confirmed by the Senate on June 2, 2020.

Okpe Union condemns renaming of Osubi airport after a non-Urhobo man

A group, known as the Okpe Union in Delta State has condemned the renaming of Osubi International Airport after Alfred Diete Spiff International Airport by the immediate past President Muhammad Buhari during the twilight of his administration.

Okpe union said it was a deliberate act to cause crisis in Delta State in particular, and Niger Delta region in general.

According to the group, King Alfred  Diete Spiff who the Osubi airport is named after is not an indigene of Delta state.

They said Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff is from Bayelsa State, not Delta State saying that he is the Amayanabo (King) of Twon-Brass in Bayelsa State.

They added that those involved in the renaming of the airport didn’t consult widely before putting forward the name of Diete Spiff.

This was made known via a statement signed and released by the National Publicity Secretary for Okpe Union World Wide chief King O.Irir on Tuesday, July 11.

The statement reads partly, It’s our belief that those who handled the renaming may not have consulted widely enough with relevant stakeholders before embarking on the exercise. And when those in the positions of authority and power refused to ask questions or allow thier personal feelings or political affiliations affect their decisions, they end up doing more dishonour and diservice to the honouree, the immediate locality in particular, the state and the country at large”

The union hereby appeal to the people of Delta state to remain calm and resolute, stating that negotiations is ongoing on the matter.

Continuing, the union urges the Federal Government to reconsider its decision and rectify the oversight.

They call on the FG to rename the airport after sons and daughters of Delta state, saying that it will serve as motivation and inspiration to future generations.

Recall that in the twilight of his administration, President Muhammadu Buhari  approved the renaming of 15 airports after some notable Nigerians.

  • Nigerians saw ugliest phase of corruption under Buhari’s administration – Bishop Kukah

Nigerians saw ugliest phase of corruption under Buhari’s administration – Bishop Kukah

The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has said that Nigerians witnessed massive corruption under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said this at the 60th call to bar anniversary celebration of legal icon, Aare Afe Babalola, in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State on Monday.

Bishop Kukah explained that even though corruption did not start under the last administration, they amplified it in moral, financial and other terms.

“We have seen the worst phase of corruption in Nigeria, Femi Falana, my friend here will speak about that because he has published a series of articles talking about what happened under the Buhari administration.

“They were not the ones who caused corruption but I think in the last administration, we saw the ugliest phase of corruption whether in moral terms, financial terms and other terms,” Kukah said.

The clergyman lamented that Nigeria is sharing its sovereignty which is guaranteed in the constitution with bandits and other terrorists.

He said that nobody is excited now about being a Nigerian even if they are President or Senators, as the country is literally being held hostage by people who threaten the very existence of our democracy and country.

Kukah noted that a lot of Nigerians have lost faith in the judiciary but added that he considers the judiciary a victim the same way every other institution in Nigeria is suffering a crisis.

According to him, Nigeria should not yet assume that it is a democracy but instead assume that it is matching towards democracy, which means rebuilding Nigeria “after the kind of mess the last administration has left the country.”

The Bishop said it is time to rebuild the country, adding that no matter what happens at the Supreme Court concerning the election, he is convinced that Nigerians have put the “ugly past” behind them.

The event celebrating 60 years at the bar of the founder of the Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti, attracted a host of dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Femi Falana, SAN, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku among others.
