Buhari cautions against illegal migration of Nigerian youths to Europe

President Muhammadu Buhari has frowned at the high rate of illegal migration of Nigerian youths to European countries through the Mediterranean Sea.

Buhari made this known at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Sahel and West Africa, organised by the Food Crisis Protection Network in Abuja on Monday.

The president, who was represented by Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, called for an immediate stop to the action by Nigerians, saying it was unfair to European countries.

He said that agriculture revitalisation was a solution to the migration issue, while expressing the readiness of his administration to support farmers in order to boost local production in the country.

“We are pained when we see our youths across West and North Eastern Africa in a desperate attempt to cross the desert; get to Libya and cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

“We consider it as something that must stop as fast as possible because it is unfair to Europe.

“We think that if we reorganise our agriculture better, many of these youths will earn a decent living at home rather than become an embarrassment to their host countries and to us here in Africa.

“We are not unmindful of our youths population here, hence the need to ensure that the agriculture sector is revitalised as soon as possible.

“We have decided that we will no longer rely on rainfall, we will create dams, water reservoirs and insist on harvesting food at least three times in a year,’’ the president assured.

On food crisis in the West African region, he described the threat as real, saying that urgent steps were necessary to address the challenge.

According to him, there are 800 million hectares of agricultural lands across the world yet to be cultivated and Africa owns half of them.

The president, appealed to Sahel and West African agricultural stakeholder to devise ideas that would guarantee better management in cattle breeding through artificial insemination.

Buhari, however, said his administration was aggressively tackling humanitarian crisis of the Internally Displaced Persons by attending to issues of food and nutrition, especially for women and children in the North East.

Mr Marcel De Souza, the President of ECOWAS Commission, said that no fewer than 40 million Nigerians were internally displaced as a result of the insecurity in the North eastern region.

He listed some of the developmental challenges of the Sahel and West African regions to include economic and political governance.

De Souza called on governments of the regions to invest toward addressing unemployment and food crisis, which he described as bane to development.

Mr Kassoum Denon, the Malian Minister of Agriculture, appealed to various countries in the Sahel and West Africa to share ideas and success stories with a view to addressing food crisis in the regions.

The Food Crisis Protection Network is an international network created in 1984 as part of regional system for the prevention of food crisis.

It brings together Sahelian and West African expertise of the humanitarian and development spheres by mobilising available resources for social protection, livelihoods, nutrition, agricultural development, natural resources management to benefit the most vulnerable populations.

It aims to eradicate hunger and malnutrition by 2030 in the regions.

Buhari merged APC, INEC, military to rig Rivers rerun election -Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of paying lips service to the sustenance of democracy in the country.

Fayose said, “Any president that looks the other way while the rights of his people to freely elect their leaders is being snatched at gunpoint by his own party men is not worthy of being associated with democracy.”

Fayose said this in a press release by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, on Sunday while reacting to the conduct of the Saturday’s rerun National and State House of Assembly elections in Rivers State.

He described the poll as a sad reminder of the level of destruction already done to the country’s electoral process by the All Progressives Congress’ government.

According to him, with what happened in the elections, ‘free, fair and credible election’ is dead in the country and whatever victory recorded by any political party in the election will be nothing but victory at gun-point.

“It is clear that Nigeria is under siege and only prompt intervention by the international community could save democracy in the country from this imminent collapse,” he said.

Fayose said it was worrisome that the legacy of free, fair and credible election left by the Peoples Democratic Party had been destroyed less than two years that the APC assumed power.

“We thought that we have gone past this era of manipulated electoral process after the 2015 general elections, which brought the APC and President Buhari to power, but the Buhari administration has taken us back to the stone age by merging his party, APC with the Independent National Electoral Commission, the police, military and other security agencies.

“It is sad that snatching of ballot boxes, hijacking of voting materials and electoral violence which had become a thing of the past have now become part of our electoral process.

“It is even more worrisome that despite the fact that votes are counted openly at the polling units, electorate are no longer sure of the results of elections until announcement by INEC, which has become an organ of the APC.”

Fayose, a member of the PDP, reiterated his call to the United States of America President-Elect, Mr Donald Trump, to focus his attention more on Nigeria, with a view to saving the country from disintegrating.

“God forbid, if Nigeria disintegrates, the entire continent of Africa will disintegrate.

  • Buhari is biggest beneficiary of PDP in Nigeria – Lamido

Buhari is biggest beneficiary of PDP in Nigeria – Lamido

One of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is the greatest beneficiary of the crisis in the PDP.

Lamido argued that there was no way Buhari could have been given an opportunity to contest for presidency at the outset of the present dispensation in 1998/99, saying that the President was able to come to power in 2015 because of the efforts of the PDP in reconciling and stabilizing the country.

Lamido, who spoke in his Bamaina hometown at the weekend, stated that all the leaders, including himself, are to be blamed for the party’s woes, but maintained that the PDP is beyond any personality, and that it belongs to Nigerians so cannot be appropriated by anybody.

The former governor who admitted that his party, the PDP was presently undergoing several challenges said the party successfully stabilized the country before the incumbent (President Buhari) could contest.

In his words: “It is not about one’s own personality or one’s ego, but it is about this party called PDP which carries the Nigerian hope which was able to get Nigerians stabilised in spite of the vilification and propaganda and prepared the ground fully for Buhari to come in and become a president because if there is any great beneficiary of PDP in Nigeria, it is Buhari.”

Speaking further, he said: “between 1998 and 1999, there was no way Buhari could have gotten the opportunity to contest, he can’t contest I don’t mean to insult him, but it is simply a historical fact that all those that are now calling the shots, is all, thanks to PDP because the country has been stabilised and reconciled.

So, anybody in the Villa or Government Houses or wherever they are, who are now enjoying this APC thing are simply because PDP was able to restore the country and made it possible for them,” Lamido said.

Speaking on the massive defection of members from the PDP to the ruling APC, Lamido said: “But today, no matter how big you are as a thief, if you go to APC, they would accept you, look at those going to APC in the last two to three weeks, these are people who are literally on trial by the EFCC.

Maybe because the PDP couldn’t stand up for them, that’s why they are going there or maybe APC has no qualms about fraud by accepting them with the intention of cleaning them,” he added.
