Premier League better than German Bundesliga – Tennis legend, Becker

Tennis legend Boris Becker says the English Premier League (EPL) has left its German counterpart the Bundesliga far behind.

“As sorry as I am for the Bundesliga, the best and most exciting league is the Premier League,” said the 55-year-old football fan on the sidelines of a media event in Munich.

He also placed the English clubs “in a different category” with regard to their investment opportunities.

When the Premier League kicks off the new season at the weekend, Becker is particularly excited about Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

“With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, who have left for Saudi Arabia, they have lost their midfield,” Becker said.

He added that the team would have to find proper replacements for them, adding that he hoped Klopp would still do well.

Becker predicted a tight Premier League title race and revealed himself as a big fan of ex-Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola.

“How he manages to motivate and inspire the team every time and also to buy the right players impresses me,” Becker said of the Spanish coach of UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City.

The tennis legend also gave Arsenal, who signed German international Kai Havertz in the summer, a chance in the title race.

  • Bellingham named Bundesliga player of season

Bellingham named Bundesliga player of season

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham has been named Bundesliga player of the 2022/2023 season, the German league said on Monday.

Even though Borussia Dortmund failed to claim the title after needing only a home win against Mainz in the final matchday, Bellingham’s “performances are worthy of recognition,” the Bundesliga said.

“The England international may still be just 19 years of age, but he possesses leadership skills beyond his years,” it added.

Borussia Dortmund were held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz, which paved the way for a 11th consecutive trophy for Bayern Munich, who claimed a late 2-1 win at Cologne.

Bellingham was only on the bench during the game against Mainz due to knee issues.

He moved to Dortmund from Birmingham in 2019 and became one of the most influential players in the squad.

His time in Germany, however, might be close to an end, as Bellingham has been heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid.

Bayern Munich on Saturday won their 11th straight Bundesliga title after defeating Koln 2-1 away from home.

Kingsley Coman fired Bayern into an early lead, before Jamal Musiala struck at the death to give the visitor the win and the German title on Saturday.

Bundesliga: Bayern, Dortmund take title challenge to the wire

With two games remaining to go in the Bundesliga, both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are in the fight to finish.

Dortmund cut Bayern’s four points to just one after defeating Monchengladbach 5-2 in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter.

Bayern had initially brushed Schalke- 04 by 6-0 at the Allianz Arena.

A measured Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel said his side “made a step in the right direction — our buried self confidence is coming back” but said “there’s no reason for euphoria, we’ll be tested again on Saturday (against RB Leipzig).”

Veteran Bayern captain Thomas Mueller, given a starting berth after being named on the bench in his side’s last two matches, settled the home side’s nerves early, slotting in after 21 minutes, his first goal in eight matches.

Joshua Kimmich doubled Bayern’s lead shortly after, converting a penalty despite losing his footing after Jamal Musiala copped an arm in the box.

Bayern have dominated the Bundesliga for a decade and will be gunning for their 11th straight title but this time not with a big fight from Borrussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund scored four goals in a dazzling 32-minute first-half spell to ease past Borussia Moenchengladbach 5-2 on Saturday and stay in the title hunt with two matches left in the Bundesliga season.

The hosts shot out of the blocks and went in front after five minutes when Donyell Malen nodded in from close range after Sebastien Haller’s shot from the edge of the box got deflected.

Jude Bellingham slotted in a penalty in the 18th minute before Haller’s spectacular backheel flick made it 3-0 just two minutes later.

With Gladbach down for the count, Haller added another goal with a well-timed volley from Malen’s cutback in the 32nd.

Dortmund are on 67 points in second place, one behind leaders Bayern Munich, 6-0 winners over Schalke 04 earlier on Saturday. Dortmund travel to Augsburg next weekend while Bayern face Champions League hopefuls RB Leipzig.
