Burnley, Leeds United promoted to Premier League

Burnley beat Sheffield United 2-1 to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League on Saturday with the result also sending Championship leaders Leeds United up alongside them.

Leeds had earlier thrashed Stoke City 6-0 to go top of the Championship on 94 points with two matches remaining and needed Burnley to then not lose to third-placed Sheffield United to make sure they would finish in the top two.

Burnley duly obliged with Josh Brownhill scoring twice at Turf Moor either side of Tom Cannon’s equaliser.

Scott Parker’s side, who were relegated last season, joined Leeds on 94 points to leave Sheffield United on 86 and now facing the prospect of trying to join them via the playoffs.

Joel Piroe scored a hat-trick in the opening 20 minutes for Leeds at a raucous Elland Road and added another before halftime as the hosts stormed 5-0 ahead by the interval.

Leeds are heading back to the top flight after being relegated in 2023 after three seasons in the Premier League.

Fourth-placed Sunderland are guaranteed a playoff place despite a 1-0 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers who kept alive their slim hopes of a top-six finish.

Fifth-placed Bristol City went down 3-1 at relegation battlers Luton Town, but remained above Coventry City who also lost 3-1 to bottom club Plymouth Argyle.

Seventh-placed Middlesbrough will be kicking themselves as they failed to capitalise on the defeats for Bristol and Coventry as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday despite taking an early lead.

With two games remaining Bristol City have 67 points, Coventry have 66 and Middlesbrough have 63.

Millwall and Blackburn, with 63 and 62 points respectively, are also still involved in the playoff picture.

Burnley edge closer to gain promotion back to EPL

Burnley came from a goal down to win at nine-man Watford and take a big step towards sealing automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

Strikes either side of half-time from striker Zian Flemming and captain Josh Brownhill saw Burnley recover after Mamadou Doumbia gave Watford an early lead.

Leeds United’s 1-0 win at Oxford meant they lead the table on goal difference from Scott Parker’s side, who equalled the club’s record unbeaten league run of 30 games.

The Clarets are just the second team in Championship history to go 30 consecutive, non play-off games without losing after Reading.

And Burnley can rubber-stamp their top-flight return as early as Monday if they beat third-placed Sheffield United at home.

Mid-table Watford, who dropped a place to 12th following this defeat, ended the game with nine men after they had both their captain Moussa Sissoko and then Edo Kayembe sent off.

Watford started positively and were rewarded in the eighth minute when Doumbia headed in Rocco Vata’s left-wing cross, ending Burnley’s hopes of claiming an English record-equalling 30th clean sheet of the season at Vicarage Road.

Flemming passed up two chances to level for Burnley, and Parker’s men were fortunate not to fall a further goal behind midway through the half.

After more good work down Watford’s left, Caleb Wiley crossed for Kayembe but he could not keep his header down, instead directing the ball over.

Burnley dominated possession after that without overly troubling Watford goalkeeper Egil Selvik until a frantic finish to the first half.

Firstly, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford produced a stunning flying save to fingertip Kayembe’s drive on to the crossbar.

While Trafford was still celebrating his save, the first of his three standout stops during the game, Burnley launched an attack of their own which ended with Flemming nodding in Jaidon Anthony’s cross.

Anthony then tested Selvik before Trafford denied Kayembe at full-stretch once again, and the two teams went in level at the break.

Just before the hour, though, Burnley completed the turnaround. Following a slick passing move down the right, Connor Roberts’ cross to the far post was knocked back into the middle by Hannibal Mejbri and Brownhill headed the visitors in front.

Watford then suffered a double blow to their hopes of staging a recovery of their own when Sissoko and then Kayembe were dismissed, both after being shown two yellow cards in quick succession.

With their two-man advantage, Burnley were the most likely next scorers and Brownhill was denied a second by Selvik.

But they also had to remain alert at the death and needed a last-ditch CJ Egan-Riley tackle on Vakoun Bayo, and another big Trafford save to keep out Ryan Andrews’ effort to preserve their lead.

  • Ronaldhino’s son Mendes, to lace boots with Burnley

Ronaldhino’s son Mendes, to lace boots with Burnley

João Mendes, the son of legendary Brazil forward Ronaldinho, is close to signing with English Championship side Burnley.

Burnley head coach Scott Parker confirmed the club is close to signing the 19-year-old, but also sought to play down hype over the deal as he looks to take pressure off the young Brazilian winger.

Mendes is set to arrive at Turf Moor having spent last season in Barcelona’s academy. He has reportedly signed a two-year deal with Burnley, according to Brazilian outlet Globo, and Parker confirmed the two parties are close.

Parker said on Thursday: “Nothing has been officially done at this moment in time, there’s something there for sure. We see him as a development player and a project but the paperwork has not been signed yet.”

He added: “I get the excitement but I think it would be unfair to heap pressure on a young boy. He’s coming here in a sense of development is how we see it.

“I get excited with the links to his father. Hopefully he comes in but there is a lot to do, different culture, different way of doing things, so I would probably dampen [that excitement] down a bit.”

Mendes came through Cruzeiro’s youth system before following in his father’s footsteps to Barcelona in 2023 where he was part of their under-19 side.

Ronaldinho was one of Brazil’s finest players and helped the country win the 2002 World Cup.
He won the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and won LaLiga twice with Barcelona and the Champions League in 2006. He also had spells with Grêmio, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro

EPL: Tottenham shake-off losing streak, Burnley confirmed relegated

Burnley football Club will play its football next season at the lower division of English football the Championship after losing  2-1 to Tottenham Hotspurs.

A win  for the Clarets would have raised some levels of hope but they lost to the Whites on Saturday evening.

The Clarets, who knew a draw or defeat meant they would no longer be able to catch fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, took the lead when Jacob Bruun Larsen slid in a 25th-minute opener.

The joy among the travelling fans was tempered seven minutes later when Pedro Porro hammered in an equalizer.

After dominating the second half without finding a way through, Spurs were finally rewarded when defender Micky van de Ven burst forward and expertly slotted the winner into the bottom corner.

The draw would have done few favours for fifth-placed Tottenham, who needed a win to keep the pressure on Aston Villa in the race for the Champions League.

Burnley join already relegated Sheffield United to go down to the Championship.

Both teams only gained promotion last season.

EPL: Onana denies team maximum points as Burnley force United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was the villain for United as he cost his side victory against visiting Burnley football club.

Onana committed a foul right in the box  thereafter,  Zeki Amdouni converted a late penalty to grab a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

First half ended gpalless but Anthony scored a for the host in the second half with just under 12 minutes to go, which felt likely to be the matchwinner. However, Andre Onana conceded a late penalty with a clumsy foul and Burnley scored to share the points.

But, just as he did on the opening day against Wolves, Onana recklessly charged from his line in an attempt to punch the ball clear but hit an opposition player instead.

The result meant Burnley moved to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season.

“We’ve earned the right to believe and hope,” Burnley manager Vincent Kompany told Match of the Day.

Kompany said “the task is to do something special” against Newcastle next Saturday, before Burnley travel to Tottenham the following week.

“We have an opportunity on that one day against Forest,” he said.

Although they grabbed a point off Manchester United the visitors would have to hope that Nottingham Forest and Luton Town fail so they can escape relegation.

EPL: Saka hits brace as ruthless Arsenal thrash Burnley

Bukayo Saka scored twice as Arsenal continued their blistering goalscoring form to thrash Burnley 5-0 and close the gap at the top of the Premier League to two points.

Following their 6-0 win at West Ham last week Arsenal were soon among the goals again, captain Martin Odegaard opening the scoring on four minutes with a crisp strike into the bottom corner after Gabriel Martinelli’s pass.

Saka converted from the spot after Lorenz Assignon fouled Leandro Trossard in the box.

The England forward got his second just after the restart, latching on to a clever Odegaard pass then cutting inside and rifling a shot into the roof of the net.

Kai Havertz’s scuffed effort was blocked in the box but Trossard was alert to curl in for his third goal in as many league games.

Jakub Kiwior’s long throw down the line then found an unmarked Havertz, who ghosted in behind the defence and drilled past home goalkeeper James Trafford to complete a comprehensive win for the Gunners.

Arsenal, who have 21 goals in five straight wins, move two points behind leaders Liverpool, while Burnley remain in the relegation zone.

Pep Guardiola the coach of Manchester City has hailed Julian Alvarez describing him as one of the best players in the world.

Álvarez now has 15 goals for the season, only two behind last season’s tally.

The 24-year-old forward has won the Premier League title, Champions League and the World Cup in his short career and Guardiola believes he’s already established himself as one of the best in the world.

“For his age, for the numbers in the Premier League, for what he gives to the team, he is unbelievable.

“He’s a world champion playing alongside [Leo] Messi, [Ángel] Di María and Enzo Fernández.

“If you are not good you cannot play in that team. He can play in three different positions and he has an incredible sense with the intensity to run. He’s really good,” Guardiola said.

EPL: Arsenal move second after Burnley win

Arsenal moved level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City courtesy of a hard-fought 3-1 victory over beleaguered Burnley.

The Gunners had struggled to break down a disciplined Clarets side for much of the first half but broke the visitors’ resistance on the stroke of half-time when Leandro Trossard bravely nodded in at the far post for Arsenal’s 1,000th goal at Emirates Stadium.

Oleksandr Zinchenko completed the scoring with an acrobatic finish into the top corner after Dara O’Shea had inadvertently steered another Trossard corner onto the crossbar.

Arsenal finished the game with 10 men after second-half substitute Fabio Vieira was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Brownhill, but the Gunners held on comfortably.

Burnley stay in the relegation zone while Arsenal trail league leaders City on goal difference – although Pep Guardiola’s team can restore their three-point lead with victory at Chelsea on Sunday.

  • EPL: Chelsea thrash Burnley in comeback win

EPL: Chelsea thrash Burnley in comeback win

Raheem Sterling inspired Chelsea to an impressive 4-1 comeback win as Burnley slumped to their fifth successive Premier League home defeat of the campaign.

Eighteen-year-old French forward Wilson Odobert marked his first Premier League start by drilling low and hard past Robert Sanchez to send home fans into raptures at Turf Moor.

Chelsea were disjointed for spells but were back on level terms before half-time thanks to an unfortunate own goal.

A cross by Sterling, back in the starting XI after a virus, struck the knee of Belgium defender Ameen Al-Dakhil and looped over James Trafford into the net.

Chelsea then scored three times in a strong second-half showing to take the points.

Sterling, who has not featured for England since the World Cup, won a penalty after being fouled by Brazilian defender Vitinho, which allowed Cole Palmer to score his first goal for the Blues since moving from Manchester City.

The four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City then scored his side’s third with an arrowed finish after Conor Gallagher had spotted his run.

Play restarted after Sterling’s goal before referee Stuart Attwell stopped the game as a check by the video assistant referee (VAR) for a potential offside was continuing.

However, the goal was eventually allowed to stand.

Substitute Nicolas Jackson sealed the points with a spin and finish, with Sterling once again involved in the move.

Having won at Fulham on Monday, it is the first time Chelsea have secured back-to-back away wins in the Premier League since October 2022.
