  • EPL: Burnley secure promotion to the premier League

Vincent Kompany’s tutored  Burnley Football Club have secured promotion back to the Premier League almost immediately after being relegated last season.

Burnley became the first team to achieve this feat with seven games to spare and may also be the first side to secure promotion with over 100 points.

Burnley unbeaten in the league since November, took an early lead when Ashley Barnes redirected Josh Brownhill’s low shot into the back of the net.

Connor Roberts steered in the winner from Nathan Tella’s near-post cross and Kompany’s men saw out the rest of the game in comfort to spark wild celebrations on the pitch and among their travelling fans.

Victory for the east Lancashire side sent them 19 points clear of third-placed Luton, who have six games left to play.

In the post match conference, Burnley Player Barnes its the end of an era for him.

“After a difficult last season to get relegated and bounce back by going straight back up is phenomenal.

“I’m a bit emotional because this is my end of an era here as a Burnley player.

“To do that and score that goal for these fans, to give that back to them – I am quite emotional.

“It’s on the club. It’s time to move on, it’s just one of those things. I’m delighted for all the staff and all the fans.

“The fans have been through some tough times last season and it was nice to give that back to them.”

Similarly. Coach Vincent Kompany noted that his protion to the Premier League was quicker than expected.

Vincent Kompany admitted he never dreamed Burnley could achieve Premier League promotion in his first season but said “quicker is better sometimes”.

“We didn’t expect this. We wanted to experience it one day, but we had a different timing on it. Quicker is better sometimes.”

  • Ex-Man City captain appointed Burnley manager

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has been appointed as the new manager of English football club side Burnley.

The 36-year-old ex-Belgium international joins after quitting his head coach job at Anderlecht, where he spent three years, in late May.

“Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager,” said Kompany, who takes over from caretaker Mike Jackson.

Jackson replaced Sean Dyche in April but could not save the club from relegation to the Championship.

“I’m excited by the challenge ahead.

“I’m looking forward to getting to work with the players and creating a positive, winning team for our fans when we return to Turf Moor.

“I’ve been impressed by the board’s vision for the club which aligns with my own and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”

Club chairman Alan Pace insists the Clarets have appointed a “proven leader”.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Vincent to Burnley Football Club,” he said.

“Vincent is a proven leader and I’ve been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley Football Club, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the club back to the Premier League.

“Vincent has shown impressive credentials in leading one of Belgium’s biggest teams back to European football and a Cup final last season and we’ve been excited by his philosophy, approach, and ambition for the club.”

  • Bottom side Burnley hold Arsenal to damaging draw

Bottom side Burnley hold Arsenal to damaging draw

Arsenal missed out on a chance to return to the Premier League’s top four after they were held at the Emirates Stadium by bottom club Burnley.

Forward Alexandre Lacazette went closest for the Gunners, poking an Emile Smith Rowe cutback narrowly wide midway through the second half.

Smith Rowe also forced a fine diving stop from Burnley keeper Nick Pope in the second period while Martin Odegaard was denied by the stopper’s feet with a powerful effort in the first half.

A draw for Burnley ended a run of three straight defeats with the Clarets now four points off safety having played four games fewer than 17th-placed Norwich City.

Meanwhile Arsenal, now winless in their past five matches in all competitions, go sixth, two points off Manchester United in fourth.

  • Burnley stun Chelsea to earn draw

Burnley stun Chelsea to earn draw

Premier League leaders Chelsea would have won their game against Burnley 99 times out of 100, said boss Thomas Tuchel as they let the Clarets “steal a point by pure luck”.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Chelsea with a header from Reece James’ cross, only his second league goal this season.

The Blues could have scored a hatful with Thiago Silva’s header hitting the post, while Nick Pope saved well from Callum Hudson-Odoi in each half.

But Burnley levelled when Ashley Westwood whipped in a cross which Jay Rodriguez headed across to Vydra to stab home.

“That’s why everyone loves the game – a team can steal a point if the other team forgets to score the goals they deserve,” Tuchel.

“We played a fantastic match. Of course I’m disappointed.

“If we played this game 100 times, we’d win 99 times. Today we didn’t win it. The second goal would have decided it. It’s always possible you miss one ball, one cross, and this can happen.

“It’s our fault. We should have scored. We created so many chances.

“You have the opponent where you want to have them. You create so many chances. We let them believe it was possible to steal a point by pure luck and that’s what happened.”

Chelsea are three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, while Burnley remain in the relegation zone.

  • EPL: Arsenal secure back-to-back wins against Burnley

EPL: Arsenal secure back-to-back wins against Burnley

Martin Odegaard’s first-half free-kick gave Arsenal their first away win of the season at Burnley.

The Norwegian curled home after Ashley Westwood had clipped Bukayo Saka on the edge of the area.

It was Odegaard’s first goal since joining the Gunners on a permanent basis from Real Madrid in a £30m deal last month.

Burnley were denied a chance to equalise from the penalty spot when referee Anthony Taylor overturned his initial decision after reviewing Aaron Ramsdale’s challenge on substitute Matej Vydra on the pitchside screen.

It was the high point of a spirited second-half performance by the hosts, whose manager Sean Dyche was this week given a new four-year contract and handed a debut to Ivory Coast wide-man Maxwel Cornet.

A second successive win eases Arsenal into mid-table following their poor start to the campaign, but Burnley remain second from bottom with a single point to show from their opening five games.

EPL: Jota, Mane seal Liverpool victory over Burnley

Goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool made it two Premier League wins from two with victory over Burnley at a packed Anfield.

Jota opened the scoring in the 18th minute, heading past Nick Pope from Konstantinos Tsimikas’ cross for his second goal in as many games.

Mohamed Salah had the ball in the back of the net eight minutes later, but it was ruled out by the video assistant referee as the Egyptian was offside in the build-up.

Sean Dyche’s side were looking for back-to-back league wins at Anfield for the first time since 1897 after ending Liverpool’s 68-game unbeaten home run last season.

But Burnley’s brave defence were finally beaten again as Jurgen Klopp’s side doubled their lead through a superb second-half Mane strike.

It was a promising all-round performance by Liverpool as captain Jordan Henderson returned to the starting XI after missing the season opener, with teenager Harvey Elliott also impressing on his first Premier League start.

  • EPL: Xhaka error gifts Burnley point against Arsenal

EPL: Xhaka error gifts Burnley point against Arsenal

Granit Xhaka suffered another day to forget against Burnley as his error presented Chris Wood with a bizarre equaliser to deprive Arsenal of a Premier League victory at Turf Moor.

Xhaka, who was sent off in the Gunners’ December defeat by Burnley, received a short pass facing his own goal from keeper Bernd Leno and tried to clip a square ball to David Luiz across the penalty area.

However, he succeeded only in hitting Wood in the midriff and the ball bounced into an empty net for the softest of levellers.

Arsenal had appeared to be in cruise control after Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang’s near-post strike beat Nick Pope to give the Gunners an early lead.

But Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka wasted chances to stretch the advantage and Arsenal were made to pay when Leno’s unwise pass to an under-pressure Xhaka was compounded by the midfielder’s mistake.

Burnley twice went close to turning the game on its head in the second half but Leno first produced a fine save to keep out Erik Pieters’ dipping 30-yard volley, and then used his leg to deny Wood in a one-on-one.

Arsenal thought they had been awarded a late penalty against Pieters but the spot-kick and the defender’s red card for deliberate handball were overturned by the video assistant referee after replays showed he had diverted Nicolas Pepe’s shot onto the bar with his shoulder.

That was not the end of the late drama as Ben Mee’s block denied Aubameyang a sure-fire winner in stoppage time before Calum Chambers crashed an effort against the post in his first league start for 14 months.

A fifth successive home draw inches 15th-placed Burnley seven points clear of the bottom three, while Arsenal remain 10th, their hopes of a late push for European qualification hindered by two dropped points.
