Wolves boss Espirito Santo slams referee after Burnley defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo could face sanctions from the Premier League after saying the referee in his team’s 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Monday was not good enough for the top flight.

The Portuguese manager took aim at referee Lee Mason, despite the official giving his side a late penalty, and his words are likely to be reviewed by the league’s disciplinary body.

“The referee did not have the quality for a Premier League game, this is a problem we know we had with Lee Mason before. It is not about the crucial mistake or decisions, it is about how he handles the game,” said Espirito Santo.

“The players get nervous, he whistles from the noises from the players. We are talking about the best competition, but he does not have the quality to whistle the game.

“I just don’t want to see him anymore, I told him I hope he does not whistle a game of ours again. He cannot control the players, the players are constantly arguing. The other referees let the game flow,” he said.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche was surprised Wolves’ Portuguese midfielder Joao Moutinho was not sent off after a VAR review of a challenge on Josh Brownhill in the final minutes, but was more supportive of the officials.

“I’ve no problems with the referees, it is really difficult now. The three most difficult jobs are the two managers and the referee.

“I don’t think any game is easy for referees at the moment. We all want the decisions of course, it is one of those things,” he said.

EPL: Manchester City beat Burnley 5-0

Riyad Mahrez scored his first Manchester City hat-trick as Pep Guardiola’s men beat Burnley 5-0 at Etihad Stadium for the fourth time in a row.

The Algerian curled two first-half efforts into the corner to ease any concerns about a perceived City scoring drought.

Benjamin Mendy drove home Kevin de Bruyne’s cross for his first City goal before half-time and Ferran Torres turned home his first Premier League goal after the break following a brief period of Burnley pressure.

Mahrez steered Pep Guardiola’s side to their biggest win of the season by completing his first treble since scoring all three for Leicester City in a victory at Swansea City in December 2015 as the Foxes marched towards the title.

It could have been worse for visitors Burnley – and their keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who was making his Premier League debut with first-choice Nick Pope missing because of injury.

In addition to De Bruyne slamming a shot against a post in the final minute, Torres and Gabriel Jesus both had goals disallowed for offside – with both having involved major mistakes from the Northern Ireland keeper.

EPL: Burnley end Liverpool’s 100% home record

Burnley ended new champions Liverpool’s hopes of completing the season with a 100% Premier League home record thanks to Jay Rodriguez’s second-half equaliser.

Clarets striker Rodriguez swivelled and fired home from inside the box following a James Tarkowski header to reward Sean Dyche’s side for their resilience and persistence in the face of large periods of home dominance.

The visitors could even have left Anfield with all three points, but Johann Berg Gudmundsson fired an effort against the crossbar with just minutes remaining.

Andy Robertson had given the home side the lead in the first half, but they also spurned a number of good opportunities to score more, with Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones guilty of wayward shooting.

They also found Nick Pope in superb form, with the England goalkeeper producing a string of good saves to deny Salah and others.

Roberto Firmino struck the inside of the post with a low shot as Liverpool poured forward to try to capitalise on having more than 70% possession.

The draw means Liverpool can now no longer beat the Premier League record for home wins in a season; they need to beat Chelsea in their last game at Anfield to equal the league high of 18.

Liverpool remain in decent shape to achieve a highest-ever Premier League points haul; although with three games left and seven points short of the record of 100 set by Manchester City in 2017-18, they have no room for error.

Burnley are now five games unbeaten since they returned from the Premier League’s three-month shutdown by losing 5-0 at Manchester City.

A draw leaves them ninth and still firmly in the mix for a place in next season’s Europa League.

  • EPL: Footballers made out to be villains

EPL: Footballers made out to be villains

England’s Premier League footballers looking to do their bit during the coronavirus crisis have been painted as villains by the government and media, according to Burnley captain Ben Mee.

Britain’s Health Minister Matt Hancock sparked a debate last week when he said Premier League players must “play their part” and take a pay cut while the league is suspended.

The pay cut is expected to ensure that the clubs’ non-playing staff are not furloughed.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney said it was a “desperate” attempt to divert attention from the government’s handling of the pandemic.

Professional Footballers’ Association chief Gordon Taylor has also defended the players.

“The criticism of footballers from those in the media and government has been unhelpful,” Mee wrote in a column for The Guardian.

“Bad press comes with the territory of being in a high-profile profession —– these things make for easier headlines than the constant community and charitable work we do all over the globe.

“But, as we’ve worked hard to do our part, those headlines have created a distraction, needlessly trying to make villains out of footballers, rather than… praising the great work of key workers who are putting themselves at risk to help others.”

Premier League players have since launched a fund — their own collective initiative — to raise money for National Health Service (NHS) charities to help tackle the crisis.

Mee said even though the players are well paid, most are from working-class backgrounds and want to give back to their communities.

“There has been great collective urgency to help in any way possible, while at the same time ensuring our funds are directed to the places that are most needed,” Mee added.

“Naturally, such a complex matter needs time to sort, but our frank discussions always had the same purpose: to help in any way we can.

“Every player has a story of how coronavirus has impacted upon their country and many are sending money back to their own nations, which is the right thing to do.”

  • Why Arsenal couldn’t beat Burnley – Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has revealed why his side was unable to beat Burnley in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Arteta said the Gunners were ‘sloppy’ during the encounter against Sean Dyche’s side as the played 0-0 against the host.

Speaking after the game, Arteta was quoted by Football London as saying at his post-match: “I hope it doesn’t take much time. But we need more consistency with the ball.
“Arsenal were so sloppy, and we have to improve.”

“We started well and could have scored two. We played in Burnley’s half and controlled long balls.

“After 20 minutes, we conceded unnecessary set pieces.

“I was very disappointed with how we started the second half.”

“I didn’t water the pitch in training yesterday.”

Arsenal will clash with Newcastle United on February 16.

  • Man Utd not good enough – Solskjaer

Man Utd not good enough – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United were “not good enough” in their 2-0 home defeat against Burnley.

The Reds were booed off at both half-time and full-time and large parts of Old Trafford emptied with five minutes to go.

United have now lost more games than they have won since Solskjaer was appointed permanent manager in March.

“There are loads of thoughts through my mind,” Solskjaer said. “Now, one of disappointment. We hold our hands up.”

The defeat is United’s eighth league loss of the season and they lie six points off Chelsea and Champions League qualification.

It is the second time they have lost back-to-back games in Solskjaer’s tenure.

“The players are giving everything, they have done absolutely fantastic so far this season but they know it wasn’t good enough tonight,” he said.

“The boys looked mentally tired towards the end, we didn’t find that creativity.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. When you are at Man Utd you are privileged because you are playing for the best club in the world.

“Sometimes you go through periods like that and it is a test I am sure they are going to come through.”

  • Burnley beat Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford

Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday and then jeered by their own supporters.

Burnley took the lead just before half-time when Chris Wood spun off Harry Maguire to meet Ben Mee’s knockdown and smash into the top corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

Jay Rodriguez doubled the Clarets’ advantage when he played a one-two with Wood before firing into the top corner of David de Gea’s near post with a venomous strike from the left-hand corner of the penalty area.

It was the third season in a row Burnley had gone 2-0 up at Old Trafford, but for the first time they hung on for all three points.

United, who were without the injured Marcus Rashford, were lacklustre for large periods and barely threatened Nick Pope in the Burnley goal.

United were booed off at half-time and full-time and large parts of the ground emptied with five minutes left.

BBC reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain six points behind Chelsea and off the top four, while Burnley climb to 13th, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

  • Hudson-Odoi shines in Chelsea comfortable win

Hudson-Odoi shines in Chelsea comfortable win

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored his first Premier League goal as Chelsea returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge with a comfortable victory over struggling Burnley.

The England winger showed a nice bit of opportunism, stealing in to the box to finish off Cesar Azpilicueta’s chipped ball, to net his side’s third and seal the win shortly after half-time.

The Blues have faltered at the Bridge in recent weeks, losing to three sides near the relegation zone, and were struggling to break down a well-organised Burnley in the opening 25 minutes until Matt Lowton’s reckless sliding tackle on Willian enabled Jorginho to open the scoring from the penalty spot.

Visiting keeper Nick Pope then allowed Tammy Abraham’s close-range header to evade his grasp and find the net to give the Blues a grip on the game before they had even got out of second gear.

The Blues could have had more but three was plenty against a Clarets side who rarely threatened, coming closest to a goal through a Ben Mee header that Ross Barkley hacked off the line.

Chelsea were assured of being fourth in the league regardless of Saturday’s result, but the win ensures they preserve a five-point cushion between themselves and Manchester United, who lead the pack below them chasing Champions League qualification.

Burnley have now suffered four defeats on the bounce – a run of results that has dragged them firmly into the relegation battle. They are four points above the bottom three, but that margin could be reduced on Sunday, with Bournemouth and Aston Villa both in action.

  • EPL: Mourinho win big after Man Utd defeat

Son Heung-min scored one of the goals of the Premier League season as Tottenham returned to winning ways under Jose Mourinho by brushing aside Burnley.

Son picked up the ball on the edge of his area before sprinting the length of the pitch – leaving a trail of Burnley players in his wake – and slotting in to give Spurs a 3-0 half-time lead.

That all but sealed victory after Harry Kane had thumped the home team ahead and Lucas Moura converted a second from close range.

Burnley had chances of their own in the first half, hitting the woodwork through Robbie Brady, but paid dearly for their defence vulnerability.

Spurs skipper Kane took advantage of more slack defending to fire in the fourth, then combined with Moussa Sissoko – again allowed to waltz through unchallenged – for the fifth.

Mourinho’s side moved up to fifth as a result – for the time being at least with Wolves having the chance to go back above them on Sunday – while Burnley drop to 13th, three points above the relegation zone after their third defeat in a row.

EPL: Worried Mourinho sleeps at Tottenham’s training ground

Jose Mourinho said he reacted to Tottenham’s midweek defeat at Manchester United by sleeping at the club’s training ground.

His 100 per cent record since taking over at Spurs came to an end in a 2-1 loss against his former club at Old Trafford.

However, he said he refused to wallow in pity and instead started planning for Saturday’s home game against Burnley.

“I slept in here (the training ground), I stayed here, I didn’t go home, so the next morning at eight o’clock I was here doing what? Burnley,” Mourinho explained on Friday.

“Analysing Burnley, trying to organise the training session, trying to organise the meeting, choosing the clips to show them the most clear possible way Burnley works.

“That’s the way you have to do it in football. Don’t accept in a passive way.”

Now, Mourinho has ordered his squad to respond to the midweek setback.

“After a defeat you cannot be sad. You have to be more than that. You have to be raging, angry, not sad,” said the 56-year-old.
