  • EPL: Jesus scores brace as City continue title chase

Gabriel Jesus scored twice as Manchester City got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a comfortable victory at Burnley.

City had won only once in their previous five games in all competitions to start the day 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.

But they were convincing at Turf Moor with Jesus curling home a fine opener for his first goal in 11 games.

The Brazilian then volleyed home Bernardo Silva’s cross after the break.

Midfielder Rodri added a sweet third from 20 yards and substitute Riyad Mahrez netted a fourth to take them back into second place in the league.

Robbie Brady blasted in a late consolation for the Clarets, his first Premier League goal in more than two years.

Leicester could move back above the champions if they get a point or more at home to Watford on Wednesday.

EPL: Leicester come from behind to beat Burnley

Leicester got the win they craved over Burnley to mark the anniversary of former owner’s Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s death on an emotional day at the King Power Stadium.

Burnley thought they had equalised through Chris Wood eight minutes from time but his effort was controversially ruled out by the video assistant referee, which ruled the striker had accidentally tripped Jonny Evans before the ball entered the net.

It meant Leicester were able to celebrate victory after goals from Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans had overturned Wood’s 26th-minute header.

It was a fitting result on a day when Leicester honoured Vichai, who was killed on 27 October last year when his helicopter crashed shortly after take-off close to a car park by the stadium.

Earlier, thousands of fans took part in a ‘Walk for Vichai’ and the stadium itself turned white as they wore scarves bearing the logo ‘Making the Impossible Possible’ which were given to them after entering the stadium.

Vichai’s son ‘Top’, who is now responsible for running the club, was dignified throughout the game, shaking hands with numerous well-wishers before kick-off. He did allow himself to punch the air when Tielemans’ 74th-minute shot powered into the roof of the net.

As the players left the field, Top put his hands together in prayer and pointed to the sky.

  • EPL: Wood scores twice as Burnley bring Norwich City down

EPL: Wood scores twice as Burnley bring Norwich City down

Chris Wood scored a superb first half brace to help Burnley outclass Norwich City 2-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday and return to winning ways in the English Premier League.

The result snapped Burnley’s winless run of four games since they beat Southampton 3-0 on the opening day of the 2019/2020 EPL campaign.

It also gave Daniel Farke’s Norwich a reality check following their 3-2 upset of defending champions Manchester City last weekend.

Forward Wood put Burnley ahead in the 10th minute with his first league goal since April, guiding his header past Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul at point-blank range.

Ashley Westwood had whipped in a perfect ball from the corner.

Norwich paid the price for giving away possession cheaply as New Zealander Wood doubled Burnley’s lead four minutes later.

He met midfielder Dwight McNeil’s drilled pass from the left with a crisp left-footed shot that gave Krul no chance.

Midfielder Moritz Leitner, who came on in the opening half for the injured Alexander Tettey, had Norwich’s best chance of the game in the 23rd minute.

However, his fierce shot from distance only rattled the post with Nick Pope beaten.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley, who have collected eight points from six matches, next travel to Aston Villa while Norwich visit Crystal Palace.

  • Liverpool stay top with club record-breaking win at Burnley

Liverpool stay top with club record-breaking win at Burnley

Premier League leaders Liverpool set a new club record of 13 straight top flight wins with a 3-0 victory at Burnley on Saturday, maintaining their two-point advantage over champions Manchester City.

After Burnley started brightly, with forward Chris Wood forcing an early save out of Adrian, Liverpool got ahead in the 33rd minute, albeit in fortunate fashion.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s attempted cross from deep on the right hit the back of Wood and looped over Burnley keeper Nick Pope into the far corner.

If Sean Dyche’s side felt luck was against them with the opener they had only themselves to blame when they handed Liverpool a second goal four minutes later.

Burnley skipper Ben Mee passed straight to Roberto Firmino, who burst forward and then slipped the ball left to Sadio Mane, who finished with precision into the bottom corner.

Firmino wrapped up the win nine minutes from the end, driving past Pope after good work from Mohamed Salah, who skipped past two challenges before setting up the Brazilian.

The club’s previous record run was set between April and October 1990, when the team was managed by Kenny Dalglish.

  • EPL: Burnley played anti-football, says David Luiz

EPL: Burnley played anti-football, says David Luiz

Chelsea defender David Luiz slammed Burnley’s “anti-football” tactics as Blues were held to a 2-2 draw on a frustrating evening for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Burnley enjoyed just 24 per cent possession in the game while Chelsea had 22 shots but they struggled for rhythm against Sean Dyche’s organised side.

Luiz wasn’t impressed with their approach.

“We tried everything to win the game, but it’s difficult playing a team who has two chances, score two goals, but didn’t want to play the game”, he told Sky Sports

“For me, the authority on the pitch is the referee, and when he is not there to try to check what he has to do on the pitch, it’s difficult.

“They were trying to time waste from the first minute of the first half, and then it was anti-football so it’s difficult to play against.”

As tempers frayed, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was sent to the stands in the final minutes of the match.

Chelsea move up to fourth after frustrating draw [EPL standings]

Chelsea moved above Arsenal into fourth position in the Premier League as they were held by Burnley in a thrilling game at Stamford Bridge.

With rivals Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United all losing over the weekend, Chelsea will be frustrated that they could not take full advantage – a win would have lifted them into third, two points ahead of Spurs.

All the goals were scored in the opening 24 minutes with Jeff Hendrick giving Burnley an eighth-minute lead before N’Golo Kante equalised after wonderful skill by Eden Hazard.

Gonzalo Higuain put Chelsea in front six minutes and 14 seconds after Burnley’s opener.

However, the visitors were level when Ashley Barnes scored from close range, his 11th league goal of the season.

EPL: Burnley defeat Bournemouth to boost survival hopes

Burnley took a huge step towards securing their top-flight status after coming from behind to beat Bournemouth and move eight points clear of the bottom three.

The Clarets, who began the day in 17th place, made the worst possible start at Vitality Stadium, Ashley Barnes sending a header into his own net under pressure from Nathan Ake.

But Sean Dyche’s side responded brilliantly, scoring twice in as many first-half minutes to turn the game on its head.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic misjudged Ashley Westwood’s corner, allowing Chris Wood to nod into an empty net from point-blank range.

The turnaround was complete two minutes later when Chris Mepham’s poor clearance landed at the feet of Westwood, who finished with aplomb.

Barnes atoned for his first-half own goal to give the visitors breathing space in the second half, slotting home Wood’s cut-back to put clear daylight between Dyche’s team and the relegation zone.

  • Burnley dent Tottenham’s Premier League title hopes

Tottenham’s Premier League title challenge suffered a huge blow as they were beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor.

The Clarets opened the scoring shortly after the break as Chris Wood rose highest to head home Dwight McNeil’s inswinging corner.

Harry Kane, making his first appearance since 13 January, equalised after latching onto Danny Rose’s quick throw-in and poking past Tom Heaton, before Ashley Barnes tapped in Burnley’s second late on.

The match ended amid drama as the frustrations of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino spilled over at the final whistle.

The Argentine, who earlier was clearly unhappy about the awarding of the corner that led to Wood’s opener, angrily confronted referee Mike Dean before being pulled away by Burnley’s Phil Bardsley.

Spurs stay in third place, five points behind Liverpool who face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Burnley rise to 13th and are now six points clear of the relegation places.

  • Burnley ends Solksjaer’s winning run at Old Trafford

Burnley ends Solksjaer’s winning run at Old Trafford

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winning streak ended as Burnley held the Red Devils to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

United were facing their first defeat under Solskjaer until Paul Pogba scored from the penalty spot in the 87th minute and Victor Lindelof scrambled in a 92nd-minute equaliser.

Burnley had defended resolutely until conceding twice late on and were in front thanks to second-half goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

Barnes smashed home from inside the penalty area at the start of the second half after a mistake by Andreas Pereira and Wood headed in Barnes’ cross in the 81st minute.

The draw means United drop points for the first time under Solskjaer, having won their previous eight games with the Norwegian in charge, and fail to move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.

The point for Burnley moves the Clarets up a place to 15th, four points clear of the relegation zone.

  • FA Cup: Manchester City crush Burnley 5-0

FA Cup: Manchester City crush Burnley 5-0

Manchester City eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup as they thrashed Burnley at Etihad Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus scored with a low strike after a fine run, although Matej Vydra wasted a good chance to equalise.

That miss proved to be costly as Bernardo Silva’s shot went through Nick Pope’s hands, before Kevin de Bruyne added a third with a powerful effort.

Kevin Long’s own goal made it 4-0 and a Sergio Aguero penalty, after David Silva was fouled, sealed the rout.

City, who last won the competition in 2011, have now scored 30 goals in seven games in 2019, while Burnley suffered their first defeat in six matches.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the Premier League and Carabao Cup last season and are still on course for a quadruple in 2018-19.

They face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, play a Schalke side who are in the bottom half of the German Bundesliga in the Champions League last 16, are only four points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool and are now into the last 16 of the FA Cup.

Playing their seventh of eight games in January, they dominated from the start against Burnley, with Jesus not far from connecting with De Bruyne’s low cross, before Bernardo and Danilo both had shots saved by Pope.

But one-time England international Pope – making only his third appearance of the season – was helpless to stop Jesus’ powerful low strike that gave the hosts a 23rd-minute lead.

With Burnley 16th in the Premier League, manager Sean Dyche opted to make seven changes, and his side failed to have a single shot on target as City totalled 75% possession.

However, the visitors should have scored within three minutes of the restart when Otamendi gave the ball to Vydra but the Czech Republic international shot wastefully wide with only Ederson to beat.

Within five minutes of that miss, it was 2-0 as Bernardo’s low shot took a deflection and went through the arms of Pope.

The Burnley goalkeeper made up for that error as he tipped Riyad Mahrez’s effort wide, although he had no chance with De Bruyne’s well-struck effort for City’s third goal.

Clarets defender Long then put the ball into his own net for City’s fourth when De Bruyne’s powerful cross hit him and went in.

Long’s day got even worse with a needless foul on David Silva and Aguero – on as a 75th minute substitute – made it 5-0 from 12 yards to seal a routine victory for the home side.
