  • Evans denies kidnapping businessman, collecting $420,000 ransom

Evans denies kidnapping businessman, collecting $420,000 ransom

Alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, at an Ikeja Special Offences Court, denied kidnapping a businessman, Sylvanus Ahamonu and collecting a 420,000 dollar ransom from his family.

Evans is standing trial alongside an ex-soldier, Victor Aduba, on a four-count charge of kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.

He made the denial on Friday while under cross-examination by the state prosecutor, Mr Yusuf Sule.

Evans told the court that he was born on April 22, 1980 and was from Nnewi, Anambra. He vehemently denied knowing Ahamonu prior to seeing him after his arrest.

When Sule noted that Ahamonu had identified him when he testified virtually (via the Zoom app) in court, Evans said he was easily identifiable.

“Ahamonu and Idowu Haruna (the Investigating Police Officer) could have conspired with the police.

“My pictures are everywhere, all over the world. Before my picture was everywhere, people knew who I was.

“I had a haulage and logistics business with over 30 staff and drivers in Amuwo-Odofin,” he said.

The alleged kidnap kingpin said he had made no mention of his haulage and logistics business in his statement because it was written by the police.

Responding to questions, Evans said he also did not provide medical documents proving his alleged torture by the police to the court.

He, however, noted that while he was incarcerated, he had filed a fundamental human rights suit against the police at the Federal High Court, Lagos, over the alleged torture.

Explaining why he was seen in a jovial mood in the confessional video played in the court when prosecution presented its case, Evans said he was forced to act that manner by the police.

“The police told me to be laughing and smiling in the video. You do not know what I encountered in the hands of Abba Kyari and his boys. My eyes saw hell.

“It was what they told me to be doing that I was doing,” Evans said.

Earlier, while testifying in his defence, Evans had said he did not know Ahamonu.

Led in evidence by defence counsel, Ms O.N Sonuga, he said, “I do not know Slyvanus Ahamonu, I only met him at the IG Guest House in Falomo.

“One day at the IG Guest House, the police brought some documents and asked me to sign, I asked what the documents were for, they didn’t answer me. They said that if I didn’t co-orperate with them they would kill me.

“When I refused, Insp. Philip asked them to take me to the back of the guest house. When I got there, they were pressing cigarette butts on my body.”

He said he saw the people he was paraded with in Ikeja, “and they said l will see what will happen to those people; that it is better I sign those documents.

“They killed about six persons in my presence and I signed the document, I was not allowed to read it. I think it is the document that was used to bring me to court.

“I do not know anything about the allegations before this court. I don’t know who Ahamonu is. I only met him at the IG Guest House, I had no prior contact with him.

Evans also told the court that no firearms were discovered in his home by the police.

Ahamonu and his wife, Chimebere, had on Dec. 17, 2021 testified virtually how Evans and his gang kidnapped him on June 23, 2014 on Kara Road off Osolo Way, Ajao Estate, Lagos.

The couple narrated how they sold properties, borrowed money, raised funds from family and well wishers to attempt to raise the initial 2 million dollar ransom that was demanded by Evans.

Ahamonu said his hands and legs were chained throughout his two months in cavity and was only released when his family had allegedly given Evans the 420,000 dollar ransom, by which time he said he was at the point of death.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo adjourned the case until March 11 for continuation of trial.

  • How I was kidnapped, tortured by Evans – Businessman

How I was kidnapped, tortured by Evans – Businessman

A businessman, Mr Sylvanus Ahamonu, on Friday narrated before an Ikeja Special Offences Court, how he was allegedly kidnapped, tortured and made to pay $420,000 ransom by alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike (alias Evans) and his gang members.

Ahamonu, gave evidence online via the Zoom App, as the third prosecution witness in the trial of Evans and a dismissed member of the Nigeria Army, Victor Aduba.

When the witness was asked to identify Evans, who was standing in the dock alongside Aduba, he said, “I know him, that is Evans.”

He, however, was unable to identify Aduba.

Led in evidence by Lagos State counsel, Mr Yusuf Sule, Ahamonu said his ordeal began in the evening of June 23, 2014, while he was returning his residence from work, in his car.

He said his driver was waylaid by two or three men in police and military uniforms, who claimed to be men of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Evans came into my car brandishing an AK-47 rifle. He was wearing a three-quarter Jean trousers.

“I saw his face, he cannot deny it. The men in army and police uniforms were beating me. They said I was wanted by SARS.

“Their bus was parked closeby and they took me into the bus, put me on the floor and covered my head. They placed their feet on my head throughout the trip.

“After about two or three hours, they transferred me to a Sienna car and took me to a building where they handcuffed my hands and legs and began interrogating me about my personal life and business,” he testified.

The witness said that three weeks into his alleged captivity, his abductors contacted his wife and asked her to pay $2 million ransom or he would be murdered.

He said his spouse, in order to meet up with the demands, sold their property and contacted family, friends and well wishers, after which she was able to raise $200,000.

“The money was given to them, and they said it was not complete, they said she must provide the complete money or they would kill me.

“She additionally sold some things in the village, and gave him another $200,000, and he said the money was not complete yet.

“My wife raised another $20,000, to give him. We gave them a total of $420,000,” Ahamonu said.

He told the court that Evans also threatened to kill his immediate elder brother, Dominic, who dropped off the first tranche of $200,000, because he reported the abduction to the police.

The businessman alleged that Evans also kidnapped his relative, Onyebuchi, who paid the final tranche of $20,000 ransom.

He said he was later released alongside Onyebuchi.

He said that his path and Evans’s crossed again after he (Evans) was captured and held in police custody.

“The police announced that anyone who had been kidnapped by Evans before should come to identify him.

“When I saw him, he started begging for forgiveness, he told everyone the amount of money he received from me, and how he treated me.

“My hands and feet were handcuffed for two months and I was blindfolded for that period. I nearly died.

“Evans told my wife to take me to a hospital, and that if I should die, he would kill her. I had to be flown abroad for treatment,” Ahamonu said.

While being cross-examined by Evans’s counsel, Mr Victor Opara (SAN), Ahamonu said he never met Evans prior to his alleged ordeal.

He said when he was accosted by the gang and told that he was wanted by SARS/authorities, he initially did not panic because he was a law-abiding citizen.

On raising of the funds for the ransom, he said that he had a very large family as well as a lot of friends who were anxious for his wellbeing.

He told court that the family members and friends helped to raise the money.

While being cross-examined by counsel to Aduba, Mr Emmanuel Ochai, Ahamonu said that the abduction occured on Kara Road, off Osolo Way, Ajao Estate, Lagos.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo adjourned the case until Feb. 4, 2022, for continuation of trial.

How a boy I fed, clothed arranged for my kidnap in Rivers – Businessman

A businessman, Alex Arthur, has narrated how a boy he fed and clothed contracted a gang to kidnap him in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“There is a boy I used to know in my former place of residence. His name is Golden aka Sugar Gold. I met him early last year. He was looking unkempt, although he was old enough to take care of himself.

“I was helping, clothing, him. I fed him sometimes, showing him love even though he wasn’t related to me. But he was the one, who arranged a gang of criminals to kidnap me.”

Alex said the incident occurred on September 8, around 10 am, while he was on his way back from the gym.

He said: “I alighted from my car to open my gate at Iwofe area, two guys approached me. One of them showed me an ID card claiming to be a naval officer and he called my name first, my phone number, my local government area. He called out all my personal information.

“The other person brought out a gun and asked me to go to the back seat of my car while the other one took charge of my driver’s seat.

“They drove out of my street and we headed for D/line, where the one driving went into an office, collected some documents and drove to the bank where he performed some transactions.”

He said one of the assailants held him at gunpoint in the back seat throughout the period.

“From there, they drove me down to an unknown area in Oyigbo axis, where they kept me briefly and demanded a ransom of N1.5million.

“After the negotiations, they said I didn’t come up with a reasonable amount of money. They drove me back to my house in Port Harcourt, where they made away with my television set, emptied my fridge, turned my room inside out.

“They left with the things they collected, which are my car, phone, television set, N128,000, and a huge sum of money from my car and headset.

“They brought me back the same day. They dropped me at my junction and zoomed off. I think they felt it would be an inconvenience for them to keep me captive. Moreover, they were just two guys.”

Alex added: “I was scared for my life. They had a six-round loaded pistol pointed to my waist. They threatened to kill me. Those guys are heartless and wicked.”

He said the two-man gang members were later tracked with the aid of his stolen phone and arrested by the police. He said they confessed that Sugar Gold sent them to kidnap me.

“I felt heartbroken that someone I was assisting to get on his feet turned around to kill me. His people have been begging me to forgive him. I have forgiven him but he needs to suffer the consequences of his action.”

Abia killer vigilante detained in Port Harcourt for killing US-based entrepreneur

The Rivers State Police Command has detained a vigilante, Okorie Chukwuma, for allegedly killing his boss, Eyinaya Ogbonna, a businessman based in the United States of America.

The suspect, after committing the crime in Abia State, absconded to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he sold off the deceased’s car.

Ogbonna recently returned to Nigeria and started a gas station in Abia State.

He was said to have employed the suspect to supervise the facility.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, while parading the suspect, said the late Ogbonna hired him through the Abia State Vigilante Service.

The police spokesman said the suspect, however, connived with another vigilante to take the life of the businessman after a disagreement.

He said, “This young man you have interviewed is from Abia State and also works there. One Eyinnaya Ogbonna, a resident of US who came to Nigeria to build a gas station in Abia State, employed him and one other in his gas station.

“The deceased got this man through a vigilance group. All of a sudden, he developed hatred for Ogbonna.

“Precisely on Sunday, the owner of the gas station went there. One thing led to the other and the man was shot from behind. He fell on the spot and died.

“The suspect, in continuing his criminal act, decided to take the man’s Venza car for sale and took it to Port Harcourt, whereupon he was intercepted by the police and arrested.

“We have recovered a pump-action gun, the man’s clothes and other exhibits. Investigation is ongoing. The second suspect is in Abia State as we speak. We are going to bring him.”

Chukwuma, in an interview with Punch, confessed to the crime.

He said, “I am a member of the Abia State Vigilante Service. I am here because I killed my boss. I came to Port Harcourt to sell his vehicle and escape with the money. Unfortunately, the police caught me.

“It happened last Sunday. He came to my duty post (gas facility). He told me not to bring friends to the gas facility; I said Okay. That Sunday, my colleague came to visit me and unfortunately he (deceased) came to inspect the place. So, he got angry with me and asked why I brought my friend.

“I told him that he was my colleague. So, from there he started quarrelling with me and my colleague. My colleague exchanged words with him. My boss rushed to beat him, but I held him back and promised not to bring anyone there again.

“So, he said since I didn’t want to listen, he would stop my work and maybe meet my commander (vigilante head) that if his money would go, no problem.

“When he left, my colleague and I started mocking him and planned how to hurt him. He came back later that afternoon and I killed him with my firearm. I shot him from the back.”

Photo: Police appreciate Army for averting full blown crisis in Abia community over businessman’s death

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG in charge of Force Criminal Intelligence And Investigation Department (FCIID), Anthony Ogbizi, has expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Army for responding swiftly to avert what could have become full blown security crisis at Ebem Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

According to reports, a police operative (now arrested) last month shot and killed one Mr Friday Arunsi, a middle-aged businessman at his shop in Ebem Ohafia community.

According to eyewitness accounts, the late businessman and his uncle, Moses, were offloading their consignment of beverages from a truck at their store at Eni Njoku Street in Ebem when some policemen walked into the shop. He said that the policemen told Moses and Arunsi to stop offloading their goods from the truck that brought the consignment but Arunsi and his uncle asked them why they should stop. Instead of giving them a reasonable response, the policemen threatened them and later walked to the police station where they signed for a gun which they allegedly used to kill Arunsi on their return.

The youths in retaliation of the killing attacked the Ohafia Police Station and released inmates. The irate youth also burnt Ebem Customary and Magistrate Courts alongside the police quarters, DPO’s residence and some vehicles in the compound. However, the army 14 Brigade and its Commander General Solomon Babatunde Kumapayi quickly rose to the occasion by calming the youths and ensuring law and order was restored in the tensed community.

In appreciation of the timely and professional intervention of the Commander, the DIG paid a thank you visit to the Commander on Monday in the company of the new Abia CP, Janet Agbede and AIG Zone 9 Umuahia, Baba Tijani. The DIG extolled the synergy that exists between members of the Nigeria Police and the Army.

According to DIG Ogbizi, Ohafia would have been on fire without the intervention of the Army, maintaining that if weapons looted from the police armoury after it was torched down by the angry protesters had gotten into the hands’ criminals, the people of the State would have been in a serious security challenge. He maintained that the police exercised restraint not because they are weak, but they are avoiding a situation of shielding blood.

The DIG while calling on the Army to extend cooperation to the new CP in the state, said such synergy is vital in the overall security of the country.

In his response, Brig-General Kumapayi said the visit of the DIG from Abuja to Ohafia indicates that he has the interest of his people at heart, saying its intervention into the disturbances is in line with its constitutional duty.

While expressing appreciation for the visit, he said the damage recorded in the protest of the killing of Friday Arunsi was alarming, adding that the police acted professionally by exercising restraint. He expressed willingness to continue to extend such cooperation to the police and other security agencies in the discharge of their duties for maximum result. He said the visit of the DIG has cemented the relationship that exists between the agencies as well as boosting the morale of the police officers in the state, adding that the Army will continue to ensure a good working relationship with the police and other security agencies.
