Police allay fears of security threat in Bwari, FCT

Police on Thursday urged residents of Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja to remain calm and not get tensed over rumours of security breach in the area.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Bwari Police Station, CSP Biodun Makanjuola, made the call, saying residents should dismiss rumours which sent panic into them on Wednesday that Bwari town had been infiltrated by suspected insurgents who came through the FCT border with another state.

“Bwari is calm. I am surprised to hear the stories going round. I think a radio programme where some contributors said a truckload of suspected insurgents were sighted at Sabon-Bwari, a town close to Sabon-Wuse area of Niger State, caused the panic .

“The mention of Bwari caused the confusion. When I gave a call to the DPO of Sabon-Wuse on Wednesday, he too said he was shocked to hear the news.

“We monitored the situation throughout Wednesday to see if there would be any infiltration and we are still doing so till this morning.

“Yes there will be tension because of the security situation of the town and the country at large. I assure residents that we will continue to do our best; we are still on alert but God is the best protector of all,’’ he said in an interview with NAN.

CSP Makanjuola also said that it was possible that those sighted were migrants returning to their villages to begin cropping with the onset of the rains.

Reacting to the rumour, Rev. Fr. Valentine Onwujiogu, Public Relations Officer at Veritas University, Bwari, said that the school was closed as students were on vacation.

Onwujiogu who spoke with NAN from outside Nigeria said he gathered that the school’s management has asked students to go on two weeks break and to resume on May 17.

“Meanwhile, lectures continue online during these two weeks break,’’ he added.

In his reaction, Mr Chinedu Ukekwe, Head of Information and Protocol Department at the Nigeria Law School, Bwari, told NAN that the school was in session and was not shut for any reason.

This, he said, was contrary to reports going round on social media that the school was shut after receiving news of possible security threat in the area.

Ukekwe said security measures had been intensified in and around the school to ensure safety.

NAN correspondent who visited the Law School and other institutions in the council area, reports that normal activities and businesses were going on smoothly, the rumour notwithstanding.

JAMB reassures Bwari Area Council of impactful development

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reassured Bwari Area Council of its commitment towards an impactful development that would improve the council.

The Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, gave the assurance when a team of the council’s administration, led by the Chairman, Mr John Gabaya, visited the board’s Headquarters on Wednesday in Abuja.

Oloyede, while pledging the council’s administration his cooperation and support, also said that the fact that the board’s headquarters was situated in the town showed that the Federal Government had the indigenes of the council at heart.

He said: “We are not just here for the writing of examinations alone but for the development of our immediate environment.

“We started the process of developing some areas with the past administration, some of which was how to rehabilitate the town roads and getting the youths engaged in sporting activities by upgrading the township stadium.

“We were at the point of meeting with the FCT Minister on these issues before the former chairman left because we laid some conditions on ground concerning the stadium, that once upgraded, will be used for only sporting and nothing more.

“This is also because of the amount of money we intend to put on the development because, we believe that after the stadium is complete, there will be a ripple effect, it should be able to attract people here for more sport events.

“However, we will continue to work with you on that so that we improve the society as well as our economy.”

The registrar also noted that the board had sent out some of its staff who were experienced teachers to help out at three government schools in the area in order to re-evaluate and identify their needs in the schools.

He said that the practice was also to further develop the school, while adding that the board further rehabilitated some of the school’s structures in the process.

According to him, the board was considering recruiting 12 staff from some local government areas of the country and Bwari area council already had two slots from the list.

“We are doing our best to making sure that we are sensitive to our environment and I assure you that whenever you need our support, we are here for you,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the council, Mr John Gabaya said that the meeting became necessary for his administration to get acquainted with the board and vice-versa.

Gabaya, while appreciating the board for its continuous support to the council, also called for the inclusion of indigenes of the area into federal parastatals and agencies such as JAMB.

“Most times, where our people gain employment are either the Area council or the Local Education Authority (LEA). We will really appreciate it if some of our indigenes get jobs in some of your branch offices.

“We are not mandating you but appealing because our people need it.”

  • Just in: Reps pass vote of no confidence in Fayemi, Bwari

The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a vote of no confidence on the two ministers manning the ministry of mines and steel development, Kayode Fayemi and Abubakar Bawa Bwari respectively.

Members of the House were angry that the two ministers boycotted an invitation personally signed by Speaker Yakubu Dogara to appear before them at plenary on Thursday as part of sectoral debate on how to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

The lawmakers said it was unfortunate and a clear case of contempt of the parliament for Fayemi and Bwari to say that they would not attend the session due to other engagements when their ministry is at the centre stage of the Ajaokuta Company.

Thus, the lawmakers resolved to constitute a powerful adhoc panel to investigate why the company has been comatose and the role of the two ministers in the allegations of under hand dealings on plans to concession the steel plant.

The lawmakers said the two ministers would not be granted any form of audience henceforth by the House due to their behaviour.

Speaker Dogara had at the opening of the session told his colleagues that the ministers said they would not attend the session due to other serious engagements.

He said it was an attempt to boycott the session.

Speaking, House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila said he considered the ministers’ attitude as contempt of the House.

“You personally signed the letter to them, unfortunately none of the ministers could sign their reply. Rather, they asked the PS to respond to you two weeks after.

“The invitation that hasn’t been honoured is a serious contempt. This presentation gives ample opportunity for fair hearing. There are allegations. I believe we should take this matter seriously. Whatever we should do here today should be moved to a powerful investigative hearing. Steel is probably more than the oil. Whatever we have in this chamber has a touch of steel in it. One of them was part of us here.

“I will personally take it as an assault to the common sense of this country for the two minister to ignore, pupu and scorn an invitation of this chamber.”

Also, Chief Whip Alhassan Ado Doguwa said: “At a point when the leadership of the country is talking about diversification of the economy, we have found the gold. But these relevant ministries are not ready to cooperate.

“What we do here is not about you but it’s for and on behalf of the generality of the people of Nigeria. For any minister to undermine an invitation of this House is to say the least unfortunate.

“This is an intervention for us to save this nation from economic quagmire. I want to say that at the end of the sectoral debate, we have to take a decisive action.

“Their absence here simply means that there’s something suspicious – absolutely suspicious. Most of the face-off we face with the Executive is as a result of the attitude of these ministers and the rest.”

One after the other, members of the House took turn to lament the development, with Rep Zakari Mohammed saying the House should not pass the ministry’s budget until the two ministers tendered unreserved apologies.
