    APC wins Lokoja/Kogi by-election

    The Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Haruna Isah, has been declared winner of the Lokoja/Kogi House of Representatives by-election held on Aug.11.

    The Returning Officer, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, who announced the results on Sunday in Lokoja, said Isah polled 26, 860 votes to defeat Alhaji Bashir Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 14, 845 votes.

    Ajayi said that Ahmed Imam of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) scored 2, 916 votes, while the candidates of the Accord Party and Alternative Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 149 votes and 2,984 votes, respectively.

    The Labour Party scored 90 votes; Democratic Alternative scored 159 votes; while Megga Party of Nigeria scored 50 votes, Ajayi stated.

    He said that 19,960 votes from 17 polling units were cancelled due to violence and other malpractices, saying that 15 of the affected polling units were in Lokoja Local Government Area, while two were from Kogi Local Government Area.

    Giving a further breakdown of the election results, the Returning Officer said that 51, 669 voters were accredited for the election while only 50,036 actually cast their votes.

    According to him, valid votes are 48,165, while rejected votes are 1,871.

    The by-election was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the vacancy created by the death of the former occupant of the seat, Umar Buba Jibrin, on March 30.

    Jibrin was also of the APC.

    Bauchi by-election: Police arrest five in connection with electoral offences

    Bauchi State Police Command says it has arrested five persons in connection with electoral offences committed during Saturday’s Bauchi South Senatorial by-election.

    Spokesman of the command, Mr Kamal Datti stated this on Saturday in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    “From the report we are getting from our men so far, the election process is going fine, peaceful and hitch free.

    “However, we have made some arrests; we have arrested five people in connection with electoral ofences.

    “The suspect are with us and we are investigating; two of them were arrested in a polling unit behind police headquarters and three others were arrested in different parts of the state,” he said.

    We are ready to conduct Osun by-election – INEC

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday assured constituents of its readiness to conduct a hitch free, free and fair elections in Osun West senatorial district.

    The Delta State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Baritor Kpagih, who was deployed to the state to supervise the exercize, disclosed this to journalists at a press conference, alongside the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fimihan Adeoye and leadership of military and paramilitary agencies in the state.

    Kpagih said voting will commence across wards in the Senatorial District by 8am and end by 2pm, adding that whosoever was on queue by 2pm would still be allowed to vote.

    He noted that accreditation and voting will take place at the same time, explaining that eleven political parties are fielding candidates in the election.

    The Resident Electoral Commissioner said only voters with Permanent Voters Cards, verified by card readers would be allowed to vote, adding that the materials to be used are customized on local government basis, with difference in colours of the ballots.

    The Commissioner of police, Mr. Olafimihan Adeoye, in his remarks said there would be restriction of vehicular movement between the hours of 6:00am and 6:00pm on the election day, with an exception of Ibadan/Ife expressway, which shall not be blocked to traffic.

    Warning that anyone caught formenting trouble would be made to face full wrath of the law regardless of his or her party affiliations, advising those who have no role to play in the election to stay off polling areas.

  • Isiaka Adeleke: INEC fixes July 8 for by-election

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed July 8, to conduct the by-election to fill the Osun West Senatorial District vacant seat at the upper legislative chamber.

    This was contained in a notice made public on Monday and signed by the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Osun State, Ademusire E.A.

    “Consequent upon the provisions of the enabling statutes that bye-elections to fill the declared vacant seat by the National Assembly be conducted within 30 days upon the declaration, take notice that by the directives of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Bye Election for Osun West Senatorial seat will hold on Saturday 8th July 2017,” it read.

    A former governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party, Mr. Wale Alakinde, has already confirmed he will run for the position, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    The position was previously held by Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who died April 23, after he was said to have attended to guests till around 2am the same day.

  • INEC declares APC candidate winner of Plateau by-election

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Mr Jackson Nimmwang, APC candidate, the winner of Saturday’s Langtang South State Constituency by-election in Plateau.

    The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Tor Iorapuu, declared in Mabodi, that Nimmwang polled 3,688 votes to beat Mr Rinsmicit Emmanuel of Mega Progressives Peoples Party (MPPP)l, who scored 83 votes.

    Iorapuu said that the turn out at the election was very low, noting that the constituency had 48,615 registered voters.

    He, however, described the election as “very free and fair’’.

    The by-election was sequel to a Federal High Court judgement, which invalidated the victory of Vincent Bulus, the PDP candidate in the April 14, 2015 elections after it was proved that he was an ex-convict.

    Only APC and MPPP vied for the seat since the PDP and its candidate were disqualified.

    A total of 400 trained ad-hoc staff, drawn from NYSC and tertiary institutions, conducted the election, which was supervised by the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Jacob Jatau.

    Commenting on the outcome, Mr Nicholas Vongsing, Management Chairman, Lantang South Local Government, expressed happiness that the election went on peacefully.

    APC candidate, Akinwunmi wins Lagos by-election

    Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC Mr. Nurudeen Akinwunmi, on Saturday defeated his opponents to emerge winner of the Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency By-Election in Lagos.

    The returning officer of the election, Prof. Clement Aghatise, made the declaration at the INEC office in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, minutes before midnight.

    Declaring the winner, Aghatise said that Akinwunmi polled 7640 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr Babatope Akinyele, candidate of Peoples Democratic Party who polled 1771 votes at the poll.

    According to him, Social Democratic Party polled five votes, Action Alliance had 14 votes, African Democratic Congress had 158 votes while Alliance for Democracy had 101 votes.

    Aghatise said that the total number of registered voters was 339, 864; total number of accredited voters was 10, 051; total number of valid votes was 9689; the total number of invalid votes was 195, while the total votes cast were 9884.

    ”I, Prof. Clement Edokpayi Aghatise, hereby certify that I was the Returning Officer for the Ifako/Ijaiye Federal Constituency By-Election held on Dec.3, 2016.

    ”That the election was contested, that Mr. Akinwunmi Nurudeen Olaitan of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected, ” he said.
