Labour Party official advises Tinubu on cabinet

Abayomi Arabambi, a member of the Labour Party, on Monday in Abeokuta advised President Bola Tinubu to urgently rejig his cabinet to serve the interest of Nigerians.

Arabambi, during a press conference, contended that many political appointees and public office-holders were not doing enough to make life easier for the citizens.

He commended President Tinubu on his efforts at improving the economy but said many of his ministers and other public office-holders were less concerned.

Arabambi, who is a Factional National Publicity Secretary in the party, noted that many of those in the President’s cabinet were “square pegs in round holes”.

He urged Tinubu to do the needful just as he urged him not to appoint people based on party affiliations alone.

“Nigerian citizens are more impoverished than they were under the colonial powers. We have been enveloped in abysmal and massive corruption, especially under the past administration.

“Our country groans under the weight of unprecedented excessive imports and a depreciating currency with the exchange rates of one U.S dollar at ₦1,652, one English pounds at ₦2,010, and one Euro at ₦1,985.

”This has rendered virtually all sectors of the economy ineffective.

“The President must be conscious of the fact that some haters of democracy and purveyors of bad news are still in the trenches planning to destabilise Nigeria over the present economy situation and which is no fault of his.

“We therefore urgently request him to execute the following in order to make life more meaningful to ordinary Nigerians and put Nigeria back on the right economy track

“The President is also hereby urged to dismiss all incompetent appointee ministers and heads of Federal Government agencies with immediate effect to bring about a better and effective government,” Arabambi said.

He lamented the epileptic power supply situation in the country “in spite of the huge investments of over 20 billion U.S dollars in the power sector by successive administrations”.

The Labour Party official urged President Tinubu to withdraw the operational certificates and licences of some electricity distribution companies and encourage private companies to take over.

“President Bola Tinubu must as a matter of urgency withdraw the certificate and licence of some of the distribution companies and encourage state governments and private electricity companies take over.

“This will pave way for a better and more prosperous nation which will bring about a great reduction in the prices of goods and services,” he added.

Speaking on the performance of the present administration, Onanuga said, “The President has given an order to all his ministers at the last Federal Executive Council meeting to go out there and speak about the activities of his administration.

“Some of them have been media shy, television shy, radio shy, and he wants them to overcome all that and go out there and speak about what they have been doing.

“Because the feeling out there is that government is not doing enough and the government has been doing a lot. And it is up to them to go out there and blow their own trumpet. They should go out there and talk about what their ministries have been doing.”

Ramaphosa unveils new cabinet with 12 opposition posts

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced his new Cabinet on Monday, confirming the handover of 12 ministerial posts to opposition parties in a televised speech.

The largest opposition party, the economically liberal Democratic Alliance (DA), will take on six positions with DA party leader, John Steenhuisen, named to head the Ministry of Agriculture, Ramaphosa said.

With 20 ministries, including key ministries such as Foreign Affairs, Defence, Energy and Finance, the African National Congress (ANC) retained the lion’s share of Cabinet posts.

With a total of 32 ministerial posts, the Cabinet has two seats larger than in previous years.

The new government consisted of 11 parties, expected to lead the African continent’s strongest economy in a government of national unity.

Ramaphosa’s ANC lost its absolute majority for the first time in 30 years in the parliamentary elections on May 29 and can no longer govern alone.

The new government plans to prioritize economic growth, social justice and democratic renewal of the country.

Combating poverty, unemployment, and crime is also a priority, along with addressing corruption and state exploitation.

The governing alliance has been formed without any firm coalition agreements.

Political analysts have questioned the stability and effectiveness of such a form of government.

South Africa is becoming increasingly important internationally due to its position in a continent rich in the raw material reserves needed for the green energy transition.

The country is also the only African member of the Group of 20 major economies (G20).

Adeleke tasks cabinet members on budget defence, lists 3 executive bills

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun has tasked members of his cabinet to prepare for a detailed budget defence at the Osun House of Assembly.

The governor also advised his aides to ensure that drafted executive bills were forwarded to the legislature timely.

Adeleke said this in a statement by his spokesperson, Mr Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday in Osogbo.

He said that full cooperation was paramount with the legislature, to speed up budget processing in line with the assembly’s timetable.

”We have a state to govern. We have a five point agenda to deliver. There is no room for distractions. All cabinet members must get their work together by ensuring successful budget hearings at the assembly.

”Also, let the relevant house committees have all required information to vet and approve your proposals.

“I have full confidence that the legislature will understand the fiscal and economic considerations behind the 2024 budgetary proposals.

According to him, his administration is aware of innovative ideas being introduced that may necessitate new laws or amendments of existing ones.

”Let me on this note direct our MDAs with planned executive bills to speed up the internal processes.

“Three of such bills are very dear to the goodness of our state. The bill to domesticate the Nigerian Startup Act should be forwarded to the assembly without further delay. That bill holds the key to boosting and diversifying our state economy.

He said that Osun electricity market bill was important to the state with a resolution reached to move faster to get the bill passed into law without delay.

”Also, of similar importance is the bill to harmonise the state tax system. Our government wants to put an end to multiple taxation and expand the tax base with a lower tax rate.

Adeleke, however,  directed the Justice Ministry and all affected MDAs to work closely to ensure bills get to the State Assembly for early passage.
