    2023 CAF Awards: Super Eagles goalie, Nnadozie makes final shortlist

    Super Falcons number  one goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie has made the final shortlist for the 2023 CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

    Recall that Nnadozie put up a heroic performance for Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

    Nnadozie  has been instrumental for the progress of her club FC Paris, thus leading them to the group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

    South Africa’s Andile Dlamini and Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi are the other goalies nominated for the award.

    In the Women’s Young Player of the Year category, Deborah Abiodun will slug it out with Comfort Yeboah (Ghana) and Nesryne El Chad (Morocco).

    Nigeria was among the final three nominees in the Women’s National Team of the Year category.

    Morocco to host CAF Awards 2023

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the city of Marrakech, Morocco as the venue for the CAF Awards 2023 scheduled for Dec. 11.

    A statement on the CAF website on Wednesday, that the awards will celebrate the continent’s top achievers in what is expected to be a spectacular affair.

    It said the awards recognise exceptional performances in both club and national competitions, culminating in the prestigious titles of CAF African Player of the Year in both men’s and women’s categories.

    Earlier this week, CAF announced the shortlists for the women’s categories for the CAF Awards 2023.

    “For the Player of the Year, 10 players remain in the race for the prestigious individual honour.

    “Whereas, the other categories namely Interclub Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, “The National Team of the Year and Club of the Year, have five nominees each.

    CAF Awards 2023: Africa Best XI category makes a return, set to include leading women players

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFPRO Africa have made arrangements to announce the Africa Best XI for men and women players at a ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco on 11 December 2023.

    As part of effort to continue to promote football CAF and FIFPRO Africa signed a document of partnership in 2018 to showcase talents in Africa by organizing the vote for the African team of the year.

    The ceremony is making a return next month many years after it was suspended due to COVID-19.

    The 2023 edition would be the third as the two previous editions were held in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

    The selection process for the 2023 edition will be determined by the votes of national team players from each federation affiliated to CAF.

    The votes will be collected through the same digital app that FIFPRO developed for the World 11 vote, which the world player union has been organizing with FIFA since 2005.

    The creation of the CAF-FIFPRO Africa Women’s XI shows a commitment by both organizations to promote the continent’s women footballers who demonstrated their talent on the world stage during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

    2023 CAF Awards: Super Falcons’ Waldrum, Nnadozie nominated for coach, player of the year

    Paris FC and Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie has been nominated for the 2023 CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

    The France based goalie, has also been nominated for the Women’s Player of the Year.

    Nnadozie has been in superb form for both club and country as she shone like a million stars at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

    The shot stopper claimed the Player of the Match honour in Super Falcons’ draw against Olympic champions, Canada.

    At the club level, she helped French side , FC Paris, earn a place in the group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

    American gaffer, Randy Waldrum, who guided the Super Falcons  to the World Cup, is in the running for the Coach of the Year award.

    Waldrum tutored the Super Falcons to the round of 16  where they lost 4-2 on penalties to the Three Lionesses of England at the FIFA World Cup in Australia/ New Zealand.

    Ikpeba reveals player that will win African footballer of the year

    Former Nigerian forward and African footballer of the year, Victor Ikpeba has tipped Napoli Striker, Victor Osimhen to win this year’s African Footballer of the Year award ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Bayern Munich’s Senegal forward Sadio Mane.

    The former Monaco forward noted that Osimhen’s rivals, Mane and Salah are not doing well at the moment.

    Prince of Monaco as Ikpeba was fondly referred to made this known while speaking on Supersport’s magazine show, Monday Night Football where he said Osimhen present form good enough to win the award.

    , “Osimhen doesn’t need to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be crowned the African Footballer of The Year for 2023.

    “If Napoli wins the Serie A and they get to the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League, like the semifinals or the final, he can be the African Footballer of The Year.”

    He added, “Osimhen’s rivals for the award, the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, are really struggling at the moment.”

    Osimhen has been in top form for Napoli so far this season, scoring 18 goals in 18 Serie A matches.

    His form for Napoli has attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United in the English Premier League.

    CAF Award: Amaju Pinnick congratulates Asisat Oshoala

    President of the Nigeria Football Federation and FIFA Council Member, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick has congratulated Super Falcons’ forward Asisat Oshoala on her historic feat of becoming the African Woman Player of the Year for the fifth time, at the CAF Awards ceremony that took place in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday.

    Oshoala had a couple of years ago become only the second player to win the award for the fourth time, after compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha.

    “The Nigeria Football Federation celebrates Asisat Oshoala for her feat, which is well-deserved, and we urge her to continue to be a role model for both the Nigeria girl-child and the African girl-child. She is walking proof of what is possible if you pursue your dream with diligence, commitment, resilience, and belief in God.

    “I want to use her as a point of contact to encourage our women footballers and the girl-child in Nigeria to work hard and without ceasing at their dreams and the goals they set for themselves, and success will always come. It is not enough to set goals or admire role models; you have to work assiduously, have temperance, and be ready to surmount odds and obstacles to get to your destination.”

    Oshoala, who plays for FC Barcelona Feminil in Spain, was the top scorer and best player at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2014 and has since played at the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals. She has also played in and won with Nigeria the Women Africa Cup of Nations in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

    At the Awards Ceremony in Rabat on Thursday, Senegalese star forwards Sadio Mane, who also won the African Player of the Year diadem in 2019, was crowned the Player of the Year.

    CAF Awards: Mane, Salah, Mendy make final shortlist for Player of the year

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the final shortlist for the Male category of footballer of the year awards.

    The current holder of the award Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala have a chance to retain the titles they won in 2019.

    Recall that the CAF awards haven’t been held since 2019 because of the ravaging pandemic COVID-19.

    The other contenders in the Men’s category are Egypt and Liverpool forward  Mo Salah, and Senegal’s Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy of Chelsea complete the final three.

    Riyad Mahrez, Naby Keita, Vincent Aboubakar, Karl Toko Ekambi, Achraf Hakimi, Sebastien Haller and Kalidou Koulibaly have all fallen by the wayside. 

    The women’s shortlist has also been revealed, with Africa’s most decorated footballer Oshoala, Cameroon forward Ajara Nchout Njoya, and Zambia midfielder Grace Chanda making the final three.

    Barcelona forward Oshoala was named Africa’s best female player three years ago – since when the awards have been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    Caf, African football’s governing body, has also announced the final lists for other men’s and women’s categories including Coach, Young Player, Interclub Player, Club, National team, and goal of the year awards.

    All the winners will be named on Thursday apart from the women’s national team of the year award, which will be announced after the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final on Saturday.

    Ahead of Thursday’s  CAF football awards ceremony scheduled to hold in Rabat Morocco, Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala has made the final three women’s shortlist.

    Four-time female African footballer of the year award winner, Azeezar Oshoala will slug it out with Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout Njoya and Zambia’s Grace Chanda of Zambia for the award.

    Meanwhile, CAF has yanked off  Rivers Angels forward, Monday Gift from the young player of the year category.

    She also didn’t make it for the second category she was nominated for, the Interclub Women’s Player of the Year.

    Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum also failed to make it in the Coach of the Year category.

    Super Eagles’ duo missing as CAF releases final shortlist for men’s 2022 awards

    Super Eagles’ duo of Moses Simon and Akinkunmi Amoo have failed to make the final list of nominees for the men’s categories of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards 2022.

    France-based Simon, who plays for FC Nantes, and Amoo of Danish side, FC Copenhagen, were the only Nigerians to make the first list released by CAF on June 30.

    However, when the final list was released on Monday, the two players were not part of the elite African performers in the last few months, who made the top list.

    Earlier, Simon was listed for the Player of the Year award, while Amoo was listed for the Young Player of the Year award.

    The CAF Awards 2022, will hold in Rabat, Morocco on July 21.

    A statement on the CAF website revealed that the star-studded final list of nominees for the men’s categories included Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Riyad Mahrez, as well as some of the elite performers in the last few months.

    The list included reigning CAF African Player of the Year, Sadio Mane (Senegal and Bayern Munich), former winner Riyad Mahrez (Algeria and Manchester City), Mohamed Salah (Egypt and Liverpool) amongst others.

    One of the highly contested categories is that of the CAF Coach of the Year, where Aliou Cisse, Pitso Mosimane, Carlos Queiroz, Tom Saintfiet and Walid Regragui had made the final cut.

    The Player of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year had 10 nominees each, whist the Young Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, National Team of the Year and Club of the Year had five nominees each.

    The winners of each category would be decided by a voting panel, made up of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, Head Coaches, Captains of Member Associations and clubs involved at the group stage of the Interclub competitions for the 2021/2022 season.

    The full list of nominees (in alphabetical order by Member Association) Player of the Year (Men) includes Riyad Mahrez (Algeria and Manchester City), Karl Toko Ekambi (Cameroon and Olympique Lyonnais), and Vincent Aboubacar (Cameroon and Al Nassr).

    Others are Sebastien Haller (Cote D’Ivoire and Ajax), Mohamed Salah (Egypt and Liverpool), Naby Keita (Guinea and Liverpool), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain), Edouard Mendy (Senegal and Chelsea), Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal and Napoli)

    Sadio Mane (Senegal and Bayern Munich) completed the list.

    For the Interclub Player of the Year (Men) are Tiago Azulao (Petro Atletico), Karim Konate (ASEC Mimosas), Aliou Dieng (Al Ahly), Ali Maaloul (Al Ahly), Percy Tau (Al Ahly), Mohamed Sherif (Al Ahly), Mohamed El Shenawy (Al Ahly) and Achraf Dari (Wydad Athletic Club).

    Others are Yahya Jabrane (Wydad Athletic Club) and Zouheir El Moutaraji (Wydad Athletic Club)

    Listed for the Young Player of the Year (Men) are Dango Ouattara (Burkina Faso and Lorient), Karim Konate (Cote D’Ivoire and ASEC/RB Salzburg),Kamaldeen Sulemana (Ghana and Rennes), Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal and Metz).

    Hannibal Mejbri (Tunisia and Manchester United) completed the list.

    For the Coach of the Year (Men) category are; Carlos Queiroz (Egypt), Pitso Mosimane (Al Ahly),Tom Saintfiet (The Gambia), Walid Regragui (Wydad Athletic Club) and Aliou Cisse (Senegal).

    Listed for the National Team of the Year are Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco and Senegal.

    For the Club of the Year are Petro Atletico (Angola), Al Ahly (Egypt), RS Berkane (Morocco), Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) and Orlando Pirates (South Africa).

    Four Super Falcons players nominated for CAF awards

    Super Falcons quartet of   Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie and Uchenna Kanu have been named as nominees for the 2022 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.

    The annual award which seeks to reward Africa’s best female football player will see the four Nigerian slug it out with 26 other female players from the continent.

    Oshoala is the current holder of the  the title for African footballer of the year  after having won the award for the fourth time in 2019.

    She jointly holds the record with Super Falcons legend, Perpetua Nkwocha.

    Meanwhile, Monday was nominated for the Young Player of the Year (Women) award alongside nine other players from across the continent.

    In addition to the Young Player of the Year award, Gift Monday was also nominated for CAF Inter club Player of the Year alongside Rivers Angels star, Maryann Ezenagu.

    Other prominent  names on the 30-woman list include 2018 winner Thembi Chrestinah Kgatlana, Gabrielle Onguene who finished second behind Oshoala in 2016, and 2017, high-flying Inter Milan striker Ajara Nchout Njoya, and South Africa’s midfielder maestros Refiloe Jane and Linda Mothalo.

    Asides from Nigeria, 11 other African nations are represented on the nominee list with the award ceremony slated for the 21st of July.
