CAF Cup: Wydad Casablanca harass Rivers United, stop them from training

Reports from the camp of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Rivers United says they have been prevented from leaving their hotel by Moroccan police officers ahead of their crucial return leg in the first round of the CAF Champions League.
The Pride of Rivers who landed in Morocco in the late hours of Thursday had secured a facility for training this afternoon in preparation for the game. However, in the process of leaving for the training session, police officers restricted the players and officials of the team from leaving the hotel citing not getting clearance from the government, despite the facility being paid for.
Rivers United are duly scheduled to train at the Mohammed V Stadium on Saturday as mandated by CAF, but, on a good account, the team has learned that they will be prevented from using the said facility tomorrow as well.
The team has so far informed the Nigerian embassy in Morocco of this shocking development through the Nigeria Football Federation who has also informed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) while we wait for their response.

Rivers United defeated the Moroccan side 2-1 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt last week Sunday and are hoping to consolidate on the result in faraway Morocco.A 35-man contingent consisting of players and officials of the club arrived at the Mohamed V International Airport late Thursday night after a brief stopover in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Sunday’s encounter will hold at the 67,000-capacity Mohammed V Stadium, Casablanca at 7 pm Nigeria time.

Recall that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has promised to give $40,000 to each player if they make it to the group stage of the competition.

The Nigerian side are hoping to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League after many years of missing out by club sides in the country.

Fidelis Ilechukwu tutored Plateau United are the other Nigerian representative in the competition and will also be hoping to consolidate on the 2-1 result advantage recorded at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja last week Sunday.

Plateau United FC targets 2021 CAF champions league berth

The management of the 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Plateau United FC of Jos, says it’s targeting to reach the semi-final of the 2020/2021 CAF champions league next season.

The club’s Media Officer, Albert Dakup, said in a statement that the General Manager, Pius Henwan, gave the pledge on the team’s preparations ahead of the 2021 soccer season.

Henwan said the team featured in the 2018 edition of the CAF champion’s league and the CAF confederations but failed to qualify for the lucrative group stage of the competitions.

“Now, all machineries are being put in place to ensure a successful outing in the competition this time around.

“The first step is to realise our objectives and this, we have done by recruiting six tested and experienced players to fortify the team.

“Seven players have been dropped due to expiration of their contracts and those who are desirous of playing time, which they failed to get in the team.

“Two more new players are expected to join the team soon as management intensifies preparations before the commencement of sporting activities by the relevant authorities,’’ the GM was quoted as saying.

Henwan dispelled rumours that the team’s head coach, Abdu Maikaba, is eyeing the Flying Eagles job, saying that the Kano-born soccer tactician was staying put in Plateau United.

“Our coach will stay for the next two years to enable him continue with the good work he started with the team two years ago.

“For our CAF Champions League matches, efforts are on by the Plateau State Government to refurbish the Rwang Pam stadium to meet CAF standard to enable the team play before its home fans.

“We appeal for more support to the team as it flies the country’s flag in the CAF Champions League.

“The club is fully focus to put smiles on the faces of soccer loving Nigerians,’’ he said.

  • CAF rejects Wydad appeal over Champions League final result

CAF rejects Wydad appeal over Champions League final result

The appeal by Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca over the result of the second leg of their 2018-19 African Champions League final against Esperance of Tunisia, has been rejected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Wydad hoped to overturn the decision of the CAF Disciplinary Board on Aug. 7 that handed the trophy to Esperance after players from the Moroccan club abandoned the game after a disputed refereeing decision, a situation exacerbated by a non-functioning Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

But the CAF Appeal Board found that Wydad had forfeited the match through their actions.

“The match officials’ reports were very clear that the Wydad Athletic Club’s players refused to resume the match even after several attempts conducted by the referee, to the point that the referee waited almost 90 minutes before he whistled the end of the match,” read a statement from CAF on Monday.

“Therefore the Appeal Board confirms that the match was forfeited by Wydad Athletic Club because their players refused to resume the match.”

Wydad can now appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but have not yet made their intentions known.

After the first leg in Morocco had finished 1-1, Esperance were leading 1-0 in their home fixture when Walid El Karti’s header for Wydad was disallowed.

  • CAF Champions League: Wasteful Enyimba held by 10-man in Aba

CAF Champions League: Wasteful Enyimba held by 10-man in Aba

Enyimba International Football Club of Aba were held to a disappointing goalless draw by 10-man Al- Hilal FC of Sudan in Sunday’s CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round first leg clash in Aba.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Peoples’ Elephant were dominant all through the duration of the match, but lacked the cutting edge on the final third.

Enyimba fired an early warning to Al-Hilal FC when Nelson Ogbonnaya planted his headed effort from Stanley Okorom’s free kick into the side netting just five minutes after the start.

The visitors heeded the warning and applied caution in their defensive approach, absorbing all that the hosts threw at them at the end of a one-sided first half.

Enyimba again came close to breaking the deadlock two minutes later when Okorom hit the side netting from a free kick almost on the same spot as the first.

Ghana import, Daniel Darkwa drifted up field and just when he was about getting a clear sight on goal, he was tripped by Abuaagla Named.

Enyimba’s centre-back, Ifeanyi Anaemena added his name to the list of those who missed scoring opportunities when he swept his glorious chance waywardly over the crossbar in the 12th minute.

This was after Onuwa Emeruwa’s sleek touch off Dimgba’s cross from the right.

On the quarter hour mark, Stanley Okorom stung the gloves of goalkeeper Salim Macoola with a rising strike from distance, but the shot stopper did well to push the ball away for a corner.

Five minutes later, Al- Hilal were reduced to 10 men with Nazar Nassr shown a straight red card for violent conduct, after the defender had stepped on Enyimba defender, Daniel Darkwa.

With the numerical advantage, Enyimba patiently worked and waited for the breakthrough as they encamped in their opponent’s territory and continued to pile countless pressure on Al Hilal’s defence.

Obi Damson had his effort parried by the goalkeeper in the 42nd minute and the ball came back gloriously for him, unfortunately his second bite at the cherry went wide off target.

For the first time in the game, the visitors sneaked behind Enyimba’s back line with Barnet Named getting to the byline, but his left foot effort was easily caught off by goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.

Perhaps, the best chance of the half fell on Dimgba who found his way into the crowded Al-Hilal box.

He twisted and turned all the defenders who virtually got fixed on a spot but his shot towards the far post went wide to the consternation of the packed stands that included governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

Both sides went into the break on equal terms.

The restart followed same pattern as the first with Enyimba in absolute control of the game but were unable to break down the visitor’s resolute defence.

Al-Hilal found an opportunity for a counter attack with Mohammed Darac firing a left foot drive that went marginally wide with Afelokhai fully stretched in the 51st minute.

In a frantic move to shore up his attack, coach Usman Abdallah substituted Obi Samson for Bashir Abdulrahman and Martins Usule for Onuwa Emeruwa.

The move almost paid off as Abdulrahman came close to finding the back of the net with a fierce strike from close range, but the goalkeeper reacted brilliantly, pushing the ball for a corner.

With seven minutes remaining on the clock, Stanley Dimgba fired a ferocious shot from the edge of the box but Macoola went down early enough to gather.

Al-Hilal displayed tremendous composure, organisation and confidence as they repelled every Enyimba offensive till the final whistle.

The Peoples’ Elephant will travel to Sudan on Sept. 29 for the return leg.

  • CAF Champions League: Plateau United lose 2-4 to Etoile du Sahel

Plateau United’s late rally on Tuesday could not stop the Jos-based side from crashing 2-4 to hosts Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia in a CAF Champions League encounter in Sousse.

The Tunisian side enjoyed a relative easy first half in the first round first leg tie by scoring three goals in 20 minutes of the first half.

Amro Marei opened scores in the second minute, while Amine Chermiti added two goals in the third and eighth minutes for the first half to end 3-0 in the hosts’ favour.

The 14th minute substitution of goalkeeper Odah Okiemute for Dele Ajiboye seemed to stabilize the visitors’ rear until the hosts scored the fourth goal in the 54th minute.

Plateau United, however graced, resurged to reduce the tally Raphael Ayagwa’s penalty kick in the 70th minute.

Eight minutes to the end of the game, Tosin Omoyele turned home substitute Patrick Eneji’s assist to further reduce the margin ahead of the second leg game.

Plateau United will host the Tunisian side in Jos on March 16.
