CAF expels Egypt’s Ismaily from Champions League

Egyptian club Ismaily have been disqualified from the African Champions League after fans forced the abandonment of Friday’s home fixture against Club Africain, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has said.

Ismaily fans threw stones and water bottles at match officials and the Tunisian club’s players, forcing Cameroon referee Neant Alioum to order the teams into the changing rooms in stoppage time.

The visitors were leading 2-1 then.

CAF expelled Ismaily from this season’s competition, having disqualified Algerian side Entente Sportive de Setif after similar scenes in a match against Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.

Ismaily’s results in Group C have been annulled, leaving Algerians CS Constantine top with six points from two games.

Club African and DR Congo side TP Mazembe now have no points from one game.

TP Mazembe had beaten Ismaily 2-0.

Egypt were named as hosts of the 2019 African Nations Cup earlier this month in spite of a number of incidents involving unruly fans in recent years.

The violence had forced local officials to limit the number of spectators at domestic fixtures to 5,000.

CAF names Egypt host of 2019 AFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced Egypt as the new hosts of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Only Egypt and South Africa indicated interests to host the 2019 finals after the rights were taken away from Cameroon late last year.

According to CAF, Cameroon was not ready to host a successful and expanded 24-team tournament and that necessitated the search for new hosts.

Before this latest chance, Egypt hosted Africa’s biggest football tournament a couple of times and the Pharaohs remain the most successful team in AFCON history.

Egypt and Nigeria will be starting off preparations for the 2019 AFCON with a friendly match between themselves.

  • Cameroon accepts to host 2021 AFCON – CAF

Cameroon accepts to host 2021 AFCON – CAF

Cameroon have “officially accepted” to host the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, CAF have revealed in a statement.

This comes after Cameroon were stripped of the right to host the 2019 tournament. Without stating how Cameroon were invited to stage the 2021 edition, CAF said the Central Africans had accepted to organise the tournament.

“CAF recalls that Cameroon has officially accepted to host the AFCON 2021 through an official letter addressed to CAF and signed by the Cameroonian Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya,” a statement by CAF read.

“The Caf President thus expresses his gratitude to President Biya for his profound understanding. Caf therefore, rejects all the unfair and totally unfounded different interpretations.”

Earlier this month, CAF President Ahmad was quoted by a French radio station saying that the Executive Committee has decided to transfer the 2021 AFCON hosting mandate to Cameroon.

Ivory Coast were the initial 2021 hosts and the CAF President was reported as saying the Ivorians will now host the 2023 tournament.

The developments led to Ivory Coast approaching the Court of Arbitration for Sport seeking security for their right to organise the edition they were originally mandated to.

But CAF have refuted reports that the Executive Committee decided to let Cameroon host the 2021 tournament.

“CAF reaffirms that on 30 November 2018; the Executive Committee met in a peaceful atmosphere and took decisions in a free and independent manner, respectful of the statutes and regulations.”

“CAF does not accept the misinterpretation of its decisions circulated and still circulating on digital and social media platforms, and regrets attempts to discredit its structures and functions of the Executive Committee.”

Hosts for the 2019 AFCON are expected to be announced on January 9 at an Executive Committee meeting in Senegal with South Africa and Egypt having submitted bids.

  • CAF shuns Ahmed Musa as Iwobi makes 10-man final list

Nigeria forward Ahmed Musa will have to wait for another year for a chance to win his first African Player of the Year award after the Confederation of African Football excluded him from the final 10-man shortlist for the 2018 award.

But his Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi is the only Nigerian in the final shortlist for the award, which winner would be announced on January 8, 2019.

Current African Player of the Year Mohammed Salah of Egypt and his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headline the list, which was decided by votes from the members of the CAF Media Committee, CAF Technical & Development Committee and half of the 20-member panel of experts.

Others on the list are Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, Tunisia’s Anis Badri, Denis Onyango of Uganda, Mehdi Benatia of Morocco, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez and Walid Soliman of Egypt.

Nigeria however, dominated the 11-woman final shortlist as current African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala and her teammates Onome Ebi as well as Francisca Ordega made the list.

Others are South Africans Thembi Kgatlana and Janine Van Wyk, Cameroon’s Fedjuo Raissa and Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene, Ghana’s Elizabeth Addo and Abdulai Mukarama, Mali’s Basira Toure and Tabitha Chawinga of Malawi.

Eagle’s defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is in line for the Youth Player of the Year. His challengers are Achraf Hakimi of Morocco and Franck Kessie of Ivory Coast. Super Falcons’ coach Thomas Dennerby is also listed for the Women’s Coach of the Year along with Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis and Joseph Ndoko of Cameroon.

Nine time African champions Falcons are shortlisted along with Cameroon and South Africa for the Women’s National Team of the Year Award.

  • 2018 CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba crash out

Enyimba on Wednesday crashed out of the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup after they lost 1-2 (1-3 aggregate) to hosts Raja Casablanca of Morocco.
Enyimba had lost by a lone goal to Raja Casablanca in the first leg in Aba.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Enyimba looked bright and eager at the start in Casablanca, but by the time they let in a soft goal in the first half stoppage time, the fight was all but taken from them.
A blunder by defender Isiaka Oladuntoye gifted Raja in the dying moments of the first half, while Oladuntoye then put the ball into his own net late in the second half.
However, substitute Abdulrahman Bashir scored a late consolation goal for the Aba Elephants.
The Moroccans will face AS Vita of Congo in the final.
Vita Club also dumped out Al Masry of Egypt after they trounced them 4-0 earlier Wednesday.

CAF Confederation Cup: Raja Casablanca defeat Enyimba in Aba

Qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup final has just gotten more difficult for Enyimba FC after they were beaten 1-0 in Aba on Wednesday by Moroccan side, Raja Casablanca.
Many had expected Enyimba to make the most of their home advantage in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final first leg match; but that was not the case.
Instead, it was Abdelilah Hafidi that emerged as the hero for the Moroccans as he got the match winner for Raja in the 48th minute.
The low shot from distance somehow squirmed through the legs of goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.
In the 65th minute, Stanley Dimgba blew away a great chance to pull Enyimba level when he blasted his penalty way off target after a Moroccan defender had handled the ball inside the box.
The home team continued to chase the game thereafter, but they could not get back into the game to the disappointment of the packed crowd at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
Surprisingly, it was Raja Casablanca that had the better of the ball possession; enjoying 53% in the first half.
Enyimba largely struggled to threaten the goal of their guests with dashing winger Stanley Dimgba only coming to life late in the first half when he drove through the Moroccan defence.
The return leg will be played on October 24 in Casablanca with the overall winner advancing to the final of the continental club competition.

  • 2018 CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba qualify for quarter-finals

2018 CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba qualify for quarter-finals

Enyimba International Football Club of Aba on Wednesday pipped Cara Brazzaville of Congo 1-0 in a crucial CAF Confederation Cup group game to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match played at the newly renovated Enyimba International Stadium in Aba was the Peoples’ Elephant final group game of the cup competition.

Enyimba came into the encounter having picked up the vital three points away from home against Djoliba of Mali on match day five to put them in a favourable position to advance to the next round.

The hosts needed at least a point to progress to the quarter-finals, but three to be sure, depending on the result in the other group game between Williamsville of Ivory Coast and Djoliba.

On their part, the Ivory Coast side knew that a draw away from home would secure their qualification regardless of result elsewhere.

Enyimba had lost the first leg of the same encounter 0-3 away from home and were also wary of the threat posed by their West African rivals.

The first 20 minutes was a ferocious and end-to-end encounter in Aba as both teams went in search for the opener.

However, it was the Peoples’ Elephant who continued to pile pressure on the resolute defence of the visitors in the closing stages of the first half.

Enyimba Captain, Mfon Udoh could have opened scoring in the 33rd minute after he found himself well placed but his effort was easily saved by Goalkeeper Chansel Mohikola.

Udoh was presented with a goal scoring chance yet again in the box just five minutes later but he failed to connect with a looping cross.

It was indeed a gruelling encounter at the end of the first half as Mohikola proved decisive for the Congolese and continued to deny the hosts to keep the score goalless.

The first half ended goalless as the Congolese side maintained their spot on the top of the group, frustrating the efforts of Enyimba who were playing on their home turf for the first time in three years.

The second half was livelier for the hosts but they were still unable to convert any of their chances which created nervy moments as CARA hung on by a thread at the closing stages of the game.

However, just when it seemed like both sides would settle for a draw, Augustine Oladapo had other ideas as he grabbed a late goal in additional time to give Enyimba a well-deserved 1-0 victory.

The win ensured that Enyimba not only qualified for the knock out stages of the competition but also topped Group C with 12 points.

CARA Brazaville also qualified for the knock out stages as the group runners up with nine points, while Williamsville and Djoliba finished third and fourth with eight and five points respectively after playing out a goalless draw.

The eight-team tournament is scheduled to take place between 17 November to 1 December 2018.

According to the CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad, Ghana’s ill preparedness was a major reason for the decision.

Ahmad was quoted on Kwese ESPN that they are looking for new hosts of the competition.

“We are engaging several countries and should be able to announce a host during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Egypt next month,” Ahmad told KweséESPN.
