    Cote D’Ivoire 2023: CAF unveils official match ball for AFCON

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday,  unveiled the official match ball for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations slated for Ivory Coast.

    The Official match ball has been christened pokou, it’s named after Ivorian legendary forward Laurent Pokou.

    The unveiling is yet another milestone in the countdown to the official kick-off of the competition.

    The official ball, POKOU, features the three main colours of the Cote d’Ivoire flag—white, orange, and green—while incorporating the latest technology that will revolutionise the game on the continent and beyond.

    The 2023 AFCON will run from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in the cities of Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.

    Host Cote d’Ivoire will take on the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in the opening fixture at the Alhassan Quattara Stadium, Ebimpe, on January 13.

    Cote D’ Ivoire 2023: CAF releases match schedule for AFCON

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the official match schedule for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

    Recall that the draw for the biennial competition took place in Abidjan last week.

    Four centers in Cote D’ Ivoire Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Bouake, San Pedro, and Korhogo have been selected for the competition that will begin from 13 January to 11 February 2024.

    The 34th edition of the biggest sports event on African soil will take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024 in Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Bouake, San Pedro, and Korhogo.

    The opening game of the competition will hold between hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau on Sunday, January 13, 2024 at Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe, in Abidjan.

    The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on Equatorial Guinea in their first game on Monday, January 14.

    It will be followed with games against Cote d’Ivoire on January 18 and Guinea-Bissau on January 22.

    Kizz Daniel speaks on his reported arrest in Ivory Coast

    Nigerian hip hop artiste, Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe, popularly known as Kizz Daniel has reacted to viral report that he was arrested in Ivory Coast.

    Recall  that the news of the singer’s arrest is currently trending on the internet.

    He was alleged to have been arrested and detained in Ivory Coast after being paid the sum of $150, 000 and he refused to come on stage to perform on Thursday, October 12, 2023.

    This comes one day after Kizz shared a video of him and his crew getting ready to jet off to Ivory Coast, while revealing that the flight cost N40 million.

    Reacting amid the report, Kiss Daniel in a post on his Instagram story, issued a warning to the public.

    His post reads “Una don start again. This time, silence no go work.”

    Recall that the singer was arrested in Tanzania in August, 2022, for failing to appear at a concert.

    No Nigerian clubside as CAF holds Women’s Champions League draws

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday held the draws for the 2023 Women’s Champions League.

    The matches will be played in Cote d’Ivoire from November 5 to 19.

    Eight women’s football clubs from teams across Africa will take part in the tournament.

    The clubs have been pooled in two groups of four each. The four clubs per group will play against each other.

    The two top clubs in each of the groups will advance to the semi-final, which will produce the finalists.

    Group A comprises of Cote d’Ivoire’s Athletico FC d’Abidjan, Morocco’s Sporting Casablanca, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Tanzania’s Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa Queens.

    Group B, on the other hand, comprises Morocco’s AS FAR, Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa, Equatorial Guinea’s Huracanes FC and Mali’s AS Mande.

    The clubs secured spots in the continental championship after topping their respective national league tournaments.

    Morocco’s AS FAR are the defending champions.

    “The competition will be hosted in two beautiful cities of Cote D’Ivoire namely, San Pedro (Stade Laurent Pokou) and Korhogo (Stade Amadou Gon Coulibaly),” CAF said in a statement on Monday.

    AFCON: CAF dashes Nigeria, Benin Republic 2027 joint bid, Morocco to host 2025 edition

    The 2027 African Cup of Nations will not be hosted by Nigeria and Republique du Benin, TheNewsGuru.com can authoritatively report.

    The hopes by the the two neighbouring  West African nations was dashed today in Far away Cairo the capital of Egypt.

    This follows the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award the rights to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) made the announcement at the end of its executive committee meeting on Wednesday.

    Earlier, Morocco won the right to stage the 2025 edition of the AFCON finals.

    Nigeria last hosted Africa’s largest football competition in 2000.

    The country co-hosted the competition alongside Ghana.

    2027 AFCON: Nigeria, Benin joint bid highly favoured to get hosting right

    Following the withdrawal of North African country of Algeria, the  bid jointly  presented by Nigeria and neighbour, Benin Republic is expected to  the  carry the day for the hosting right of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

    The Confederation of African Football, (CAF) has stated it will announce host for 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals on Wednesday, September 28, 2023.

    The Executive Committee of CAF will vote on the bids for the 2025 and 2027 editions of the AFCON at a meeting billed to take place at the Marriott Hotel in the Zamalek area of downtown Cairo.

    There are speculations the 2025 hosting right will go to Morocco.

    The joint bid by Nigeria and the Republic of Benin is in contest with Senegal, Egypt, Botswana and a multiple host arrangement of three East African countries of  Uganda/Kenya/Tanzania for the 2027 event.

    Algeria was a strong candidate for the 2027 event until the North African country withdrew from the race on Tuesday morning.

    Nigeria has put forward the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja; Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt; Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo; Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos; Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna; Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba; Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City and; Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

    In the Republic of Benin, the Stade Mathieu Kerekou in Cotonou and the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo are listed.

    2027 AFCON: FG delegation to present Nigeria’s bid to host

    The Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan-Enoh is set to present Nigeria’s bid to host the 2027 AFCON at the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo on Wednesday.

    The Minister and the leadership of Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF) will be attending the meeting as representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

    During the meeting, Nigeria will make its presentation to the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African football (CAF).

    Nigeria and the Republic of Benin had presented a joint bid to host the AFCON in 2027.

    All countries who submitted bids to host the AFCON tournament in 2025 and 2027 respectively are expected to attend the meeting.

    Nigeria will make a 10 minutes presentation to the CAF EXCO, and thereafter will be allocated time to answer questions from its presentation.

    The Nigerian delegation includes NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau; General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, and bid Coordinator, Mainasara Ilo.

    The Independent Assessment Committee of CAF will submit their reports for assessment and discussions by the CAF EXCO.

    CAF’s team had previously visited Nigeria to assess facilities at different proposed host venues around the country.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United, Etoile Filante share spoils in Yamoussoukro

    Rivers United’s hopes of securing group stage qualification looks brighter after snatching an away draw in Far away Cote d’ Ivoire.

    The Pride of Rivers  held hosts Etoile Filante to a goalless draw in the first leg match of their second preliminary round fixture.

    Recall that  Rivers United had qualified for the second round after they drew bye in the first preliminary round.

    Etoile Filante on their part reached the second round after they defeated Casa Ziguiqor of Senegal in the first round.

    The game which was played at the Municipal Stadium in Yamoussoukro, near Abidjan ended goalless in spite of the efforts of the two teams to secure a vital victory.

    Rivers United will host the second leg of the fixture at the Adokie Amesiemaka stadium in Port Harcourt in a fortnight.

    There were also some big upsets in the first leg of the second round qualifiers of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.

    Tunisian giants Club Africain were beaten 0-2 away by Ethiopian minnows Bahir Dar Kenema, putting them on the brink of elimination.

    They will need to win the second leg in Tunisia by three clear goals to progress directly without any complications after the setback.

    In Brazzaville, Diables Noirs of Congo earned an impressive 2-1 victory away to Zambian club Muza.

    The Zambians face a tough task in the return leg on Oct. 1 if they are to reach the play-off round.

    Tanzania’s Singida United hold a slender advantage over Ugandan club Future FC after Elvis Rupia’s goal earned them a 1-0 home win.

    Meanwhile, Sudan’s Al Merrikh and Angola’s Academica Lobito played out a goalless draw in Omdurman.

    The biggest winners on Sunday were Libyan club Abu Salem who defeated Kampala Capital City of Uganda 3-1, thanks to a ruthless attacking display.

    The second leg matches take place in two weeks to determine which clubs book their places in the group stage of the Confederation Cup.

    Godwin Obaseki the Edo State governor, will on Saturday afternoon lead supporters of Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to cheer them in their CAF Confederation Cup 2nd round preliminary first leg game against the Renaissance Sportive de Berkane Football Club of Morocco.

    Briefing Journalist at the media Centre of the  Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin, Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission Yusuf Alli , Olympian, and former Captain of Team Nigeria and the press Secretary to Edo State governor, Mr. Andrew Okungbowa, expressed confidence that Mr. Governor Godwin Obaseki will be at the forefront on Saturday to give massive supports to the Benin Arsenal, ensuring that it is nothing but total victory against the Moroccan side.

    “Let me on the behalf of the government of Edo State and our amiable governor Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, appreciate the people of Edo State, including the civil servants for the massive support given to Bendel Insurance FC against their opponents from Algeria ASO Chief FC in the first preliminary round game last month. The rhyme of that massive support still echoes. We are ready for the second round first leg again.

    “The State government is offering free ride for spectators coming to the Stadium the same way we did in the first round match. We have also thrown the gate open with free tickets. Our Governor has put all machinery in place to ensure victory for Bendel Insurance.”

    Insurance qualified to the second round of the competition after degfeating ASO Chlef of Algeria, who are the 2022/23 Algeria Cup winners.

    CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United captain makes crucial demand from fans ahead of Etoile Filante clash

    Captain of Rivers united, Nyima Nwagua has called on football loving fans to pray for the team’s victory in their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso on Sunday.

    The Rivers State-based side will clash with the Burkina Faso side in the first-leg encounter at the  Stade Municipal, Yamoussoukro.

    Nwagua said the players are fully ready for the encounter but urged the fans to continue to pray for their victory in Cote d’Ivoire.

    “All we need now is the prayer and support of the fans,” he told Rivers United media. We are fully ready for the game and the prayer will see us through in Cote d’Ivoire. We will try to do our best to deliver,” Nwagua said.
