Salah predicts team to win AFCON 2021 in Cameroon

Egypt forward, Mohamed Salah, has predicted his country to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

The Egyptian captain said the Pharaohs would give everything to win the 2021 AFCON trophy.

Salah said this after leading his team to qualify for the AFCON quarter-final.

Egypt defeated Ivory Coast 5-4 on a penalty shootout in the AFCON round of 16 encounter this week to qualify for the last-8.

Carlos Queiroz’s men will now take on Morocco in the AFCON last-8 on Sunday.

“Of course, I want to win something with the national team. It is my country, which I love the most. This trophy for me would be completely different, would be the closest to my heart,” Salah said at his post-match press conference after Egypt defeated Ivory Coast on Wednesday.

“We were close before to win this African Cup [in 2017], we gave it everything, but we were not lucky to win it. But it is ok, now we’re here in the new one.

“We have to fight for it, we’ve to give everything to win it and I am sure the players have the same feeling.”

    Super Eagles return from Cameroon

The Super Eagles returned to Nigeria from the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon on Tuesday.

Newsmen reports that the team of players and officials returned via a chartered flight from Garoua where they played four matches.

They arrived at 1.10 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where they were received by officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The NFF officials were led by their General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, accompanied by federation Executive Committee members Yusuf Ahmed and Shehu Dikko.

A large chunk of the players and officials came down from the aircraft, alongside a large number which comprised members of the Supporters Clubs and media personnel.

The aircraft later headed to Lagos, where it dropped off the few remaining players and officials, while the rest headed to the Transcorp Hilton where they were to be lodged.

Sanusi welcomed the players and praised them for their efforts in Cameroon, saying it was now time to look ahead to the task of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

”You have tried your best. It was just unfortunate that you failed to reach the final. But, right now, what is left is the unfinished business of qualification for Qatar 2022.

” We should put behind us 2021 AFCON, and start preparing for the final qualifiers,” he said.

The team captain, Ahmed Musa, later told NAN that the team had put behind it the disappointment of failing to reach its target at the 2021 AFCON.

”We are now looking forward to the World Cup qualifiers against Ghana’s Black Stars in March. But right now it is back to club business for us,” he said.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles, after three wins in the competition’s first round which earned the tag of favourites, could not go beyond the second round.

They lost 0-1 to Tunisia in a match which saw them being reduced to 10 men just after the hour mark.

The players are expected to return to their respective clubs abroad in the next one or two days.

  • COVID-19, injury hit Comoros ahead of clash with Cameroon

COVID-19, injury hit Comoros ahead of clash with Cameroon

Comoros, who have proven to be giant-killers at this 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will be without a goalkeeper and coach Amir Abdou on Monday.

That is when the tournament debutants face hosts and five-time champions Cameroon in Yaounde.

Their camp has been hit by 12 positive COVID-19 tests, with seven players being hit, including the two remaining goalkeepers in the squad.

And this has come with number one goalkeeper Ben Boina being out through injury.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that team officials have however assured that they were working round the clock to change the situation for the better.

”We will do everything in our power to find a solution,” team general manager El Hadad Himidi said.

“It’s the coach and the only fit goalkeepers, and the situation is really complicated.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had earlier ruled that teams affected by COVID-19 must play matches even if they have no recognised goalkeeper in their squad.

“A team will be required to play a match if they have a minimum of 11 players available who have tested negative.

“In the event of the absence of a goalkeeper, another player from the team must replace the goalkeeper, provided the total number of available players is at least 11.

“In exceptional cases, the Organising Committee of the Africa Cup of Nations will take the appropriate decision,” CAF had stated.

Comoros will now be hoping that the injury suffered by Boina could be considered an exceptional case.

This is because the goalkeeper sustained the injury and had to leave the field following a challenge which led to Ghana’s Andre Ayew being sent off.

NAN reports that Comoros had shocked Ghana 3-2 to eliminate the Black Stars and qualify for the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed sides.

Super Eagles advance to knockout stage with best group phase record

Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Wednesday in Garoua advanced in style to the knockout phase of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

They beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 at the Stade Roumde Adjia to become the only side at this 33rd edition of the competition to win all their three group games.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that winners of groups A, B and C who had advanced earlier failed to win all their three games.

It is now not possible for any other team in groups E and F to accomplish this, with none of them having won two matches.

The Group D winners made eight changes to the side which beat Sudan on Saturday, with six on the bench and the other two unavailable.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Zaidu Sanusi, as well as forwards Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze and Taiwo Awoniyi dropped to the bench.

On their part, Olaoluwa Aina and Joseph Aribo did not dress for the game.

This did show in the Super Eagles game, with the team almost strolling through the first half.

It took them time to get going, with their opponents not providing something better too.

But it was not too long after the restart that they got going, with Umar Sadiq opening the scoring following a cross from Kelechi Iheanacho in the 56th minute.

The Super Eagles took full charge thereafter, with Simon coming in for Chidera Ejuke and Peter Olayinka for Sadiq.

William Ekong sealed the win after he tapped in a rebound following a good job fine by Simon from the left flank.

But it took referee Peter Kamaku from Kenya almost two minutes before allowing the game, following a lengthy VAR check,

Olisa Ndah, Frank Onyeka and Henry Onyekuru later came on for Tyrone Ebuehi, Kelechi Nwakali and Iheanacho respectively to steady their game and hold on to their lead.

NAN reports that the win took Nigeria to nine points from three matches, sealing their top spot in the group and condemning Guinea Bissau to bottom place.

The Super Eagles now await the best of the third-placed teams in groups B, E and F as their opponents in the next stage on Sunday in Garoua.

Meanwhile, seven-time champions Egypt beat Sudan 1-0 in the group’s other game to finish second behind Nigeria and qualify for the last 16 round.

Mohamed Abdelmonem scored the game’s only goal, after heading home Abdallah El Said’s corner-kick in the 35th minute.

Sudan offered little opposition though, with Egypt going close to a second goal through a Mohamed Salah effort which was saved by goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa in the second half.

Egypt will now face the winners of Group E on Jan. 26.

  • AFCON 2021: Super Eagles hold final training session ahead of Guinea-Bissau clash

AFCON 2021: Super Eagles hold final training session ahead of Guinea-Bissau clash

The Super Eagles on Tuesday had their final training session of the final Group D game against Guinea-Bissau at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

The Newsmen report that the training took place at the annex pitch of the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

But the session looked uneventful as the three-time champions only have as opponents on Wednesday the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau who are with only one point from two games.

They will take to the main pitch of Stade Roumdé Adjia from 8 p.m. needing at least a draw to finish as group leaders.

During the training which started at 8.30 p.m. and lasted for about an hour, all 27 players in the squad took part.

Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen supervised the session along with assistant coaches Salisu Yusuf, Paul Aigbogun, Joseph Yobo, Terry Eguaoje and Aloysius Agu.

Goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu also drilled the quartet of Maduka Okoye, Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho and John Noble.

The players were however in boisterous mood as they looked forward to the game.

Yusuf, Yobo and Agu put them through their paces with light jogging and stretches in the first 20 minutes.

They quickly observed a one-minute water break afterwards, before going into an intensive training session in the last 40 minutes.

Agu worked on the reflexes of the goalkeepers, while Yusuf, Yobo and Aigbogun put the 23 other players through some ball work exercises for 10 minutes.

The players were then split into two groups in the final 30 minutes of the training as they worked on short passes and ball control.

The first group comprised of team captain Ahmed Musa, Olaoluwa Aina, Joe Aribo, Olisa Ndah, Zaidu Sanusi and Henry Onyekweru.

The rest are Sadiq Umar, Chidozie Awaziem, Kenneth Omeruo, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka.

The second group had assistant team captain William Troost-Ekong, Kelechi Iheanacho, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Kelechi Nwakali, Jamilu Collins, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Tyronne Ebuehi, Chidera Ejuke and Peter Olayinka.

The training which started at 8.30 p.m ended at 9.30 p.m., with the team heading straight to their bus and the hotel without speaking to the media.

  • Top 5 young players to watch at AFCON 2021

Top 5 young players to watch at AFCON 2021

With Africa’s most prestigious men’s football competition that kicked off this week, the excitement in the continent and internationally can’t be contained.

The competition format recently underwent an expansion which will see 24 teams participate in it for only the second time. This expansion highlights how far the tournament has come from its inception in 1957. Some of the favourites going into this tournament include nations such as Algeria, Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, Egypt and Nigeria.

Star power is immense at AFCON with names such as Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City), Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Achraf Hakimi (PSG), Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (Bayern Munich), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), and Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City).

Although these veteran players possess the skill and technique to spearhead successful campaigns for their respective nations, it is important viewers watch out for the next generation of players included in these squads.

Continental competitions such as the EUROS and AFCON can act as a spotlight for young players with the ability to perform well at club level. Some of the youngsters that picked up major individual awards at the completion of previous AFCON tournaments have gone on to impress even more at their clubs.

With that said, here is a list of 5 of the most exciting youngsters that will participate in the AFCON tournament in Cameroon:

Ilaix Moriba – Guinea and RB Leipzig

One of the nations that could dominate in the upcoming tournament is Guinea.

With players such as Naby Keita and Amadou Diawara, a young Ilaix Moriba can flourish in a midfield partnership with such seasoned players.

The youngster came through the Barcelona academy ranks before getting a few chances with the first team and making a name for himself as a member of Barcelona’s core.

Although the 18-year-old has made a move to German outfit RB Leipzig, he doesn’t seem to be getting enough chances as he did back in Spain.

At the AFCON, Moriba can expect the trust of the national team’s manager to represent his country and show viewers what he’s made of.

The teenager’s willingness and excellence at a variety of midfield positions will give Head Coach Kaba Diawara a lot of options on how to set his midfield up. With an eye for goal and a physical dominance beyond his years, Moriba is set to have a wonderful experience at the African Cup of Nations 2022.

Samuel Chukwueze – Nigeria and Villarreal

Samuel Chukwueze is one of the best young talents in the Spanish top-flight.

The Nigerian winger has had good spells of football in Spain which have earned him comparisons to some of the most legendary wingers in the world including Dutch phenomenon Arjen Robben.

One of the many facets of the Nigerian starlet is his outstanding ability to exploit open space in the attacking third and drag opposing defenders out of position which makes fellow Nigerian attacking players including Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo lucky to have Chukwueze on the pitch with them.

Another critical part of his skillset that could see the Nigerian national team thrive is his defensive awareness.

Despite being a forward, Chukwueze is adept at winning both aerial and ground duels, cutting down angles and shutting down progressive passing lanes.

In conclusion, the AFCON tournament can serve as a platform for this promising young talent and his exceptional dribbling skills to thrive, lead his nation to lift the trophy, and maybe increase his chances for playing amongst the elite at club level.

Kamaldeen Sulemana – Ghana and Rennes

As the Black Stars prepare to challenge for their fifth AFCON title, they’ve named a strong squad with a fine balance between veteran experience and youthful exuberance.

One of the impressive youngsters they called up is left winger Kamaldeen Sulemana.

The 19-year-old forward took the Danish league by storm and won a Danish SuperLiga Player of the Month award in April 2021 before moving on to French outfit Rennes. Sulemana’s impressive performances and dribbling flair have earned him comparisons to Neymar.

The youngster’s gameplay goes beyond his ability to take-on defenders as he possesses quite an eye for goal. His devastating pace and trickery should be called upon by head coach Milovan Rajevac if the Ghanaians plan to put on a show at the tournament.

Ismaila Sarr – Senegal and Watford

The Senegalese national team has a left-winger in the English Premier League with the ability to score crucial goals and create goalscoring opportunities and it isn’t Liverpool’s starlet Sadio Mane. It’s Watford’s youngster Ismaila Sarr.

Before making a move to the Premier League, a host of top European clubs were interested in securing the Senegalese forward’s services seeing as his extreme talent was on the market for a relatively cheap price.

Sarr’s skill set consists of a devastating dribbling arsenal and pace that allows him to cover short and long distances with ease.

With a tall frame that can allow him to add the ability to contest for aerial duels to his game and his proficiency in coming off the wing to curl the ball in with his preferred right foot, it should be interesting to see how he performs alongside talisman Sadio Mane and Keita Blade.

Amadou Haidara – Mali and RB Leipzig

One of the most interesting teams that will participate in the AFCON is Les Aigles headed by Mohamed Magassouba.

His midfield selection is without a doubt one that viewers should look out for especially because of youngster Amadou Haidara.

The centre midfielder currently plies his trade at RB Leipzig but could soon move to a different club with Manchester United said to be making inquiries.

At a young age, Haidara has put in stunning performances in the Bundesliga as a ball winner and ball-carrying midfielder with a lot of energy.

Haidara has excelled in all competitions with Leipzig with the support of his fantastic teammates and should expect that same success at the AFCON playing alongside Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and RB Salzburg’s Mohamed Camara.

  • Host Cameroon defeat Burkina Faso in AFCON 2021 opening game

Host Cameroon defeat Burkina Faso in AFCON 2021 opening game

Vincent Aboubakar scored two penalty kicks as Cameroon came from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the opening match of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday.

After twice being moved due to climate issues and COVID-19, the delayed tournament finally got underway at the Olembe Stadum in Yaounde.

Burkina Faso took the lead in the first game in Group A, which also includes Ethiopia and Cape Verde, thanks to Gustavo Sangare’s back-post volley after 24 minutes.

Bertrand Traore had a header cleared off the line in the build-up to that opening goal, but he gave away a penalty kick for a trip on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa at the other end.

Aboubakar converted following a long video review (VAR).

The Indomitable Lions captain was on target again from the penalty kick spot eight minutes later after Issoufou Dayo slid in on Nouhou Tolo to concede another penalty kick

VAR intervened to deny an offside Aboubakar when he thought he had bundled in a third in the second half, but two goals proved enough for Cameroon to get off to a winning start.

  • VAR to be used in all 52 AFCON matches

VAR to be used in all 52 AFCON matches

All 52 matches of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which begins on Sunday in Cameroon will have the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition gets underway with hosts Cameroon taking on Burkina Faso at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

The final match of the 24-team competition will hold at the same venue on Feb. 6.

The organisers, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), had previously used VAR from the quarter-finals stage of the 2019 edition in Egypt.

However, CAF has now advanced with a full use of the innovation which gained worldwide recognition by 2018.

It is expected to help improve the image of refereeing and also produce world-class match officials in Africa.

Sixty-three match officials, including women referees Salima Mukasanga (Rwanda), Carine Atemzabong (Cameroon), Fatiha Jermoumi (Morocco) and Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco), have been listed for the matches.

The list consists of 24 referees, 31 assistant referees and eight VARs, all coming from 36 countries.

The roster includes two referees from the CONCACAF as part of an inter-confederation skills exchange programme.
